Having failed to fizz in defeat at Sale, Bath must next silence Wasps buzz with victory at the Rec. Currently 7th place, Wasps have buzzed only in fits and starts this campaign, slumping to defeat at home last Saturday to Saracens. Both teams will be working out their chances of playoff and Champions Cup positions but while calculating, need to be alert so when their number comes up, they seize the moment. So whose head will be clearest and who will win on Saturday?
Experienced Fizzbuzzers know that what starts as a bit of fun can quickly turn to frustration, especially if concentration slips. When the game gets serious it is vital to number up as Wasps found to their cost last week. Lack of focus and precision in defence cost them two early tries. Then, having threatened a comeback with Sopoanga’s try from Simpson’s opportunism, lamely allowed Will Skelton to gallop through a gaping hole for Saracens’ third try. The visitors only had to kick their penalties in the second half to swat the home team aside.
As Bath also snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Gloucester, followed by a limp, error strewn display of frustrated toil at Sale, the sides appear well matched – not just in table positions, but in fallibility. Wasps will be keen to recover their season with a late run to the top 4. Having won recently at Sandy Park and shown commendable enterprise at times against Saracens, they will feel they have the strike force to do it. However, their selection will be hampered by injury. In addition to long -term absentees Robson, Young, Willis and Campagnaro, they may have to do without both Launchbury and Gaskell in their second row. They will also be without the luckless Jimmy Gopperth who broke his thumb in Saturday’s match after months out. So it will be up to Sopoaga to prompt the counter attack talents of Daley, Marcus Watson and Leroux. Buzzing together they are capable of plenty of venom in attack.
Todd Blackadder has pleaded for Bath to ‘salvage some pride’ in their last two fixtures. Mathematically they can still scrape into the playoffs, although that seems unlikely unless there is a dramatic form reversal for several clubs. It would almost certainly require try bonus points, so Bath may find themselves calculating scores and counting every point in hope. A Champions Cup earning 6th place looks more realistic, but even that means winning against two traditionally pedigree sides fallen on hard times, who will be equally desperate to restore reputation.
Writing about the Sale v Bath match, former Bath great Stuart Barnes commented ‘Friday's fiasco was an embarrassment for the club game'. Today’s generation of players may not listen to him, but many Bath supporters, desperate for the sustained success of his era would dearly love to see the burning will to win that he and his teammates regularly displayed.
With Watson and Rokodoguni now fit, Bath too have the strike force to get the Rec buzzing. To do that will require the pack to dominate Wasps for the majority of the match –Ellis, Underhill and Mercer especially must sting their opponents repeatedly in tackle and at breakdown. They also need more fizz from halfback. Batty and Charteris are both recovereed from injury so more front five options are available than for a few weeks- with the exception of Nathan Catt, whose sciatic nerve trouble has returned, ruling him out of this weekend's action.
It is tempting to demand the players just “give it a lash”, forget the calculations and play from the heart in response to Blackadder’s call. Errors in execution though have been the team’s downfall in so many matches this season, so the priority has to be precision in taking chances and concentration in defence.
“Fizzing” is great to watch when it works, but to climb the table Bath will need to play the percentages and keep cool, not get drunk with the first success. If they don’t cut out the errors, the scoreboard can flip as quickly as the numbers in a game of fizz –buzz.

Cheers PG. Personally I would like both sides to just give it a lash, win would be nice but skills and entertainment are desperately needed or fans right on the edge may just not bother.

Louw is out for last games of the season (as is Grant). I Think that Stooke is being used as back and second row bench cover (which is a mistake IMO, he should be starting with Attwood).

All the noises coming out of Farleigh yesterday were about finally putting in a performance to be proud of and playing for those leaving, coaches and players. Basically putting an 80 minute performance "for the first time this season". I don't think it's a lot to ask, it's just a shame it took till round 21 to (potentially) do it.

As a Waspie I am truely looking forward to this game. Matches at historic grounds such as the rec should always be enjoyed. I, like others, am hoping the 2 teams release the shackles and go for it. However inconsistant and unpredictable would be 2 words I would use to desribe us both this season, yes injuries have played their part, but I also feel that the coaching teams have struggled as well which has reflected in our respective records.
I am expecting a tight game, mistakes a plenty and some nervous players and supporters. Top European rugby is the prize at hand, and a win for either of us would go a long way to getting that! Now just have to count down the work days!

Crikey, did you really get Jeff Williams and Victor Delmas in the last 2 years? Is that a record for fewest games played by adopted players over the same period?! I think that you should be seeded next year and get to choose from a pool of actual first team players...

Have to agree, as a decent 15 he can catch kick and is quick and elusive on his feet. I would like to see if he could hack it at 10. I know its a risk but who else has his skills and could play there if it all goes bang!

I think asking McConnochie to play 10 is too much of a stretch, but it does tie in with a point I've made before. In this country, we automatically send the fast-twitch players out to the back 3. Your adoptee, Darren Atkins, played as a 10 at club and, I think, school. As soon as he went into the Academy he was pushed to wing/fullback, based on the fact that he was lightning quick. If Beauden Barrett were English, he'd be a wing or full-back. Darren ended up at 10 in a game last season (can't fully recall the circumstances) and gave a very good little cameo performance. As a wing, he's had his pace compromised by the need to bulk up. I think he's also suffering a bit at wing/15, because he seems uncomfortable with some of the heavy-duty physical aspects of those positions. I think he might have been a great, mercurial 10, with the pace to cause the defending back-row some real nightmares. Compare that to Priestland who has about half the pace of Harry Thacker.

Hadnt really thought about this but I think youre spot on! I believe Barrett started as a 15 for the All Black junior levels too. Just goes to show.
(Side note: given Thackers versatility Im surprised he hasnt had more of a chance with Eddies England, especially with the big Joe and Billy switch and Nowell being pseudo-considered at flanker)

I am glad we have dropped priestland after last week. There have to be consequences for playing badly, and for too long players do seem to get picked regardless of form.
It works both ways though, and I think it is wrong that Watson comes straight in for homer who I think has been playing well. (unless he is injured) If anyone should have been dropped from the back 3 on form it should have been jc. Also cook played OK when he was in the side and now is playing behind 2 players who I don't think have done much to justify their place.
I'm expecting an away win on Sunday, the wasps side looks strong to me with launchberry back and with a bit of an upturn in form recently. I cannot wait for this season to end (again)

On paper this has the potential to be spectacular when you read the names in both line-ups and I echo the comments of wombles222 in how shackles released, it could be a belter. However, I believe once again it will be a precarious crawl towards 80 minutes with either a win we sneak or Wasps taking it because once again we don't take our chances we know can be created. I've seen nothing in months to suggest we have addressed this at all, and see no reason for Sunday to be any different.
A shame once more that Green hasn't come in as Chudley has definitely gone off the boil for me and Green deserves another shot now the season is very much over for us.

Marcus Watsons catch n break thing was absolutely tremendous. As was that Glaws try last week featuring Cips twice, the sort of thing I really hoped Barf would be doing with the injection of Dempsey and Willinson. Next season?

Its interesting to note that when we compare our lineup to that of our competitors these days we are by no means superior in most cases. We are particularly mediocre at half-back & we dont look to be any stronger next season. We really have to start performing above the sum of our parts rather than below to not be really struggling next season.

80 minute performance please. No sleepwalking into the game or at the start of the second half as usual please. 21 rounds in, give the Rec something to cheer about and those players and coaches leaving something to smile about.

Lot of pressure on Freddie to get through 80 minutes, which he gasnt Done for a long time. Is RP really dropped? Shocking, if so.

Im not sure Freddie physically can - that article last week was about the cramps he gets after 60 mins.

Hadn't read that, makes it quite alarming then. No wonder we fall apart in the last 20, you cant play 10 with cramps, affects kicking and acceleration. Where was the article please Matt?

Flipping heck...that's not good at all! I feel for him but on another note it means that if Priestland is crocked we need Freddie plus some else to go to 10 in case he cramps.
Doesn't that compromise the bench picks as well?

Gaskell's injury I reckon helped us but dead right our bench played well above expectations and like Zach said way above last week
Douglas especially looked good
