COML Referendum on our Future
COML Referendum
By CoochieCoo
August 14 2019
There has been recent debate on the advantages and disadvantages of SN on 'ere and at other Clubs.
Glos never moved completely to SN from Rivals and started Shedweb. Recently Quins and Wasps have moved to standalone sites and Sale have decided to move to another standalone site, hoping other clubs follow suit. Wuss have decided to split some going to the new site including the editor and the SN site is now edited by the original startup editor. Falcons have also some activity on this site but some still use SN.
ERE and COML have been on SN since 2002 and we have grumbled many times of the frustrations experienced. Recently SN have made some changes and mostly for the better but not far enough for some.
We three mods have been discussing what we should do and are seeking your views in a poll by PM. We are doing this because we do not want the poll to be hijacked by non Bath members.
At present there are over 200 active posters over the last 18 months and some 70 who haven't posted since Jul 2018 but have posted on COML since 2013. There are many more lurkers who do not post at all and may not have a registered name!
We are therefore seeking an answer to the question “Should we stay with SN?” Yes, No or Don’t care?
Rules are one vote per member to be made before 8 AM on 2 September 2019. We require to make the poll valid a minimum turnout of 70 votes (35% of our current active members) and the winning margin will be a minimum of 60/40 ratio. Don’t cares will be counted in the total votes but ignored for the win ratio.
Please send PMs to me CoochieCoo and I will respond to you of safe receipt with a copy to Hasta and P G Tips. You can send a PM by typing my board name (case sensitive) in the "To" box and click the Add recipient. If the name is not recognised an error message will appear otherwise the name you typed will appear underneath with an "x" in the top right corner. If you want to keep a copy of your sent message under the Subject box there is a tick box to retain the sent message. Subject is Poll and then just put, Yes (to stay), No (to go) or Don't care.
The Pros of staying
- A lot of COML and ERE history may be lost
- COML is more than a forum it’s a fanzine
- COML is colourful and active
- ERE and COML have been with SN since 2002 and have established a presence with supporters and search engines, moving may mean loss of some members
- COML is able to earn about £75 a year which is donated to charities after the expense of registering the domain
- SN have promised to sort out security (since writing this, site is now secure)
- We provide a link to sites not on SN such as Quins, Shedweb, Sale and Wasps which are two clicks away
- We are the second most visited site on SN rugby boards after Saints
- There is a large group behind SN
- It’s the devil we know
The Pros of moving
- More modern forums have better facilities such as posting images direct
- Security if not sorted out by SN
- SN slow in reacting to issues although things have improved recently e.g. search facility, clock
- Not having to post a story every fortnight to stay live (thanks to PG Tips not really an issue for us)
- Being with other clubs (though at the moment VFT22 only has activity in Sale, Wuss and Falcons and at present very little activity even accounting for the off season).
Hope this is clear but we are happy to answer or get answers to any questions you may have.

On the mobile site there is a link to PMs in the horizontal navigation bar click and continue with clicking me message.
We discussed timing and it was felt this needed to be aired before the new season started one way or another.
If anyone else has any questions please post them ‘ere. I am on guide duty at Lacock Abbey today so will respond this evening, unless PGT or Hasta have time to respond in the meantime.

We mods want to know the preference of our members, rather than decide among ourselves -in isolation.
The referendum is not "mandatory" for the voter, but if there is a strong majority either way we would feel we had to implement that majority's wishes.
As you will see above we propose a minimum 35% turnout for the referendum to be valid - with minimum 60:40 split in voting to effect a decision.
I hope that clarifies.
PG
'We require to make the poll valid a minimum turnout of 70 votes (35% of our current active members)'
The first Bath game is 21st September and this site just isn't anywhere near as active at the moment.
Whilst the topic is obviously important (relatively speaking!) I think that it is about a month too early. In fact I will put my money where my mouth is and say that if we get 70 or more votes from unique active users by 8 AM on 2 September 2019 then I will donate £10 to Dorothy House and screenshot you the evidence.

Send a Private Message (PM- see Coochie's post above if you've not sent one before) to Coochie, myself and hasta with your vote.
Your comment will be recorded in case the momentum shifts and a critical mass suggests a need to change.
PG
i like that but that facility is diminishing.
Id hate to use just the nominal team i support.
Will wait and see what you do...
The Mods agreed all three so there would be no confusion between us as to how many votes had been received.
Sorry you found PM a chore- a learning point for those of us used to sending & receiving PMs!
PG
That we we all get a yellow box that we click to reply to with our vote. We would also know the identity of the voters. No need for any technical skill as you reply to the PM in the same way as you post messages on the board.

We do - but did not want to exclude any "lurkers" who felt strongly enough to vote.
it would also be more labour intensive for us to PM everybody.
However, it is a good idea - if we receive underwhelming response it could be worth consideration.

If there was no objection, me not being a mod, I would happily help with the admin for this task.

I have been monitoring the board with the search facility and in the last week there have been 80 logged in members who have visited COML at least once, of which half have posted at least once. Lurkers who have not logged in will not be included.
The tigers site have had a poll on this and last time I looked they had 70 votes.
Quote:JFPC
For me it's a chicken and egg affair. At the moment this is the site with the most actively represented clubs. Whilst that remains the case I'd prefer to stay here. If a majority move to a new site (eg vft22) then I'd be then up for moving. Assuming I'm active enough to be given a vote how should I vote to make these feelings clear?
All posters active or who have posted in the past but not active now are legible to vote. With the search facility we can identify when a poster last posted and whether he is a Bath supporter.
I suppose if the majority leave for another board we will all probably think it is a good thing to move. At the moment Wasps, Glos and Quins are on three separate boards and I have provided links in the navigation bar to them. Sale has moved to VFT22 and they also have a link. Wuss is split as is Irish and I think Falcons between VFT22 and SN.

1) CC I wonder if the same scrutiny to establish member identity is reciprocated on the other polls?
2) I agree with Matt about posters activity in the summer, you do wonder if some of those on the Worcester Warriors board will come back and find everybody has moved out!
3) I don't really understand how a club's forum can be split between 2 sites, surely that is the worst of both worlds.
4) The options on the Tigers board seem to me to dilute the votes, what would the options be on the 'Recksit referendum' ?

[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
1) CC I wonder if the same scrutiny to establish member identity is reciprocated on the other polls?
No it hasn’t. That is why I wanted a response by PM. There is no way of identifying who has voted on a poll. I voted on both Tigers and Wuss and it was accepted. I did cancel these test votes.
I have a list of all active members and if I receive a vote from a name I do not recognise I can use the search facility to see their activity and check for genuine Bath supporters.
2) I agree with Matt about posters activity in the summer, you do wonder if some of those on the Worcester Warriors board will come back and find everybody has moved out!
It’s a possibility. However we are asking for 60/40 win ratio and a 70 minimum. If we don’t achieve the minimum the status quo prevails. So it won’t happen with us.
3) I don't really understand how a club's forum can be split between 2 sites, surely that is the worst of both world.
Agreed and the acrimony that has been achieved at Wuss by both sides is to be avoided at all costs, hence the PM vote to avoid intrusion into our internal affairs.
4) The options on the Tigers board seem to me to dilute the votes, what would the options be on the 'Recksit referendum' ?
Agreed. I think our binary approach albeit with a don’t care option is more positive and will avoid dilution. The don’t care votes will be added to the yes and no votes for the 70 minimum. They will be ignored to calculate the 60:40 ratio.
Quote:BathMatt53
In terms of activity there is an interesting table on the tigers board which shows that (on their board) activity in August is about 10% of may / June albeit we are only 2/3 through the month. Would be interested to see the stat for us. No issue whatsoever with the vote otherwise though, seems sensible.
Thank you Matt for your support. The tigers table was posted on 10 Aug so 9 days into August. Our equivalent figure is
May visitors 11762
June visitors 6885
August visitors 5656 up to 18 Aug
This year we have no preseason games to chat about in August. Last year we had 12664 for the whole month so maybe 10,000 by end of Aug, so down on last year. Let’s see!

3) I don't really understand how a club's forum can be split between 2 sites, surely that is the worst of both worlds.
Totally agree Shipwrecked, three of the forums are now split but each under different scenarios
Worcester - 95% have moved across as a result of the vote and JP had come across too until he decided to take over the board on here hence why it's still going
Newcastle - The mods decided to move across but probably should have consulted the members first, some have come across and some haven't
London Irish - Been in conversation with Griff who mods the board, he's really busy at the moment but he's been considering moving for a while. Waiting on a decision about their board but more and more members are joining VFT22 so that one seems a matter of time in my opinion.
As a more general point, if you're considering which way to vote, sign up to VFT22 and have a look around first, have a play around with the system to see what you think and if you have any questions then fire away on here or there

To retain a copy of your sent PM you have to tick a box at the top. The system defaults to not retaining a sent PM which is a point I will take up with SN.

Before you finally decide on the timing and process of your referendum, it may be well to learn a lesson from us at Wuss.
We are, as CC quite correctly points out, currently split. That’s because the clear majority vote of posters (31 of 47 votes cast) who voted YES to “Does ComeOnYouWarriors move to VFT22” was not respected.
A previous moderator, not convinced that VFT22 was a correct move, chose to take over as mod. to keep the Wuss SN site alive. (The previous mod. moved with the vote).
The traffic on the 2 sites now tells its own story, readers will draw their own conclusions,
Good luck with your deliberations, and for the coming season.
Quote:Very true Hasta, hopefully fair minded folk will go or stay as indicated by the voting majority.hasta
To be clear, nothing is stopping sportsnetwork and/or anyone else continuing to run this site and anyone else could continue to post on it if they wanted. I suppose what we're committing to as mods is to set up a new site using the COML banner and COML domain name on VFT22 if the majority do vote to move.
Having just re-read the thread header, I feel it’s only fair to point out that for those who like to view and chat with other clubs, all prem forums can reached with one click from the vft22 Premiership index page.
I was a “stayer” when we first started discussing it at Wuss, but became a “mover” after having a good look around vft22.
It’s a bit like when your pc goes non-responsive yet again and you finally bite the bullet and go Apple.
It all just works.

Anyone can browse the forum here

Done! PITA is a new one to me but I agree, them pm's certainly are!
We have agreed that you only need to send one PM to one of us.
An easier way to send a PM is to click the moniker of the individual in a posting they have made and in their profile is a link to PMs. The name of the person is already there and just put in the subject and message click the retain message box and submit. Done!

VFT22 is not the only site we can move to, have a look at the links to Quins and Wasps to see what they have to offer. Also Shedweb and other sites such as Reddit and any others that people recommend. All these will need to be investigated for suitability for the COML brand and domain.
I did notice annoying adverts mind message board which is something I don’t see in SN. I only use the mobile version.
One question did come to mind.
The current forum is supported by sports networks, who supports the new one.
Is it some basement programmer’s pet project which will eventually fall into disrepair or is it supported by a professional organisation that will ensure it is future proof.
I am afraid that it would be wrong of me to vote Stay or Leave as I have absolutely no strong feelings and no knowledge of those two options. But I do not wish to vote "I don't care" because I do care but I don't know what I am caring about!
Could we accurately assume that you do care that COML continues, but don't know which form of site would be best?
CC has tried to summarise Pros & Cons in his preamble.
Further comments - by CC & others - in this thread help explain the debate. One above by Lost Soul is particularly pertinent in my view.
PG
The Quins and Wasps sites are using platforms the former is TapaTalk. VFT22 is run by a Sale supporter with a leased server. People’s lives change and if this person gets fed up or is too busy on other things presumably someone else will have to take over.
VFT22 is fine and more modern but it is only a message Board at the moment. I worry about where we are going to put 30 links of information such as the rec development etc without a facility outside the mb.

The board runs on phpbb which is an open source project which is constantly updated, the source code here is custom so it can't be updated without a big effort hence why when the "update" happened it was pretty much just cosmetic rather than something more substantial.
I've always had an interest in rugby and have various other website, updating phpbb is not an onerous task so you have my word that the site will be there for the long term!

We are halfway through our referendum and so far we have received 20 votes. From the stats there are 27 Bath supporters who haven't voted yet but have been active posters in the week since announcing the referendum and there are another 69 Bath logged in lurkers who have visited COML in the last week. If just over half of these voted we would get up to our target.
Please click on my name in this message and then 'send a private message''. Subject Poll then your vote if you are using the mobile version.
In the desk top version you can 'reply by PM’ in the navigation bar at the foot. This automatically copies my name, subject and the quoted post. Answer by typing in before or after the quote.
Yes = stay
No = leave SN
Don't care = not bothered

I'm a frequent visitor and occasional contributor here, but as a Bristol-residing Saints fan I won't be voting!
I think shendy you have been ‘ere as long as I have and are very welcome. I think I and my fellow mods know the names of most of the Bath Rugby supporters and that is why we decided not to have a poll as it could be hijacked by people with vested interests. All votes have to be from Bath supporters as it is their site and should not be determined by outside sources.
The other two seem to have the number of votes reflecting the number of people that are active on the site, doesn't really suggest that the vote has been influenced. I can assure you I've not employed Cambridge Analytica to help my cause.
I'm no expert on voting but I like the way that having voted I will not know the result until the the vote is over. The ability to see the current voting trend in the middle of the voting process can influence the vote in a "what does everyone else think?" kind of way.

Sorry jumping the gun a bit.

The general problem for me in such moves is splinter groups whereby certain posters just talk amongst themselves about the same subjects to the same agreeable like minded people.
What is the point of that...
I can think of one site that is the worst for that split...and another where they are that small minded anyway.

Well not really Matt, the referendum set out rules, the voting didn't meet them so it falls. A 'nearly got to 70' doesn't count.
If that happened you would need a second vote, wasn't that your point about the timing of this matter? Anyway as you both said it's premature......I'll shut up now.

Quote:Good morning John,
Thank you for your PM, I have been in discussions with Lindsay and at this time it is not something we'd be willing to do. There was a vote on the Worcester forum and the result was overwhelmingly to move across to VFT22, by providing a link to the old forum we'd simply by splitting the traffic which the vote was designed to avoid.
In addition to this I don't appreciate the incorrect allegations you have been making across SN about myself and the site. This is totally unacceptable and needs to stop.
Kind Regards,

Bath's situation is different as if they opt to remain as I expect then I need to look into a way I can incorporate a menu into the site, once the poll is finished I will be looking into this but first my priority is getting the prediction league ready.

This represents about 16% of our active Bath members. As many members have not voted we, the mods, have concluded that there is no burning desire to change the status quo.
We will look at this again at the end of the season, if there is a swell of opinion that we need to move.
In the meantime we will continue to keep in touch with SN to make improvements.

I voted to stay but unlike what is happening elsewhere would have fully supported the democratic decision but like on that occasion it is disappointing that so many didn’t bother to vote.
Maybe they just don’t care enough either way, like me.
Also no one sees stickies. At least I don’t. My eyes just skim past them at this point. Having a thread constantly bump to the top is much more noticeable.

I've only just noticed this poll, but happy to see that we have for the moment chosen to stay put. My concern if we left is that the large number of posters we have here may be diluted. Surely the ERE/COML family should come first over tech?
Hi Ade hope you are well. We decided not to have a conventional poll but a selective vote by PM because we wanted to ensure only active Bath supporters voted. You were certainly on the list. Sorry you missed this thread but it was being publicised via Twitter and FB as well.
Your concerns are shared by many of us and the alternatives are not exactly a massive improvement from what we have ‘ere.

There was a “don’t care” option for people to vote for.
Do not understand the comment that no one sees stickies. They are at the top of the board so are the first few threads one sees. A Sticky will be marked New in red with every new post on that sticky unopened by the reader. Ordinary threads bump up to the last sticky and any new posts on a sticky will be bumped up to the top of the board. Granted if you are not interested in the subject of the sticky you have the option to ignore it.
We try to keep stickies to a max of three. At the moment we have the Adoption thread which is very active, PGT’s latest article to keep us alive and the squad sticky which would disappear if it wasn’t.
Quote:CoochieCoo

Except when you've trained your eyes to ignore stickies you've already read and focus on the new content being bumped up, like I have. I didn't even see this thread for days after it first opened because my eyes imediately go to the first regular thread.
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
As for Matt's gazing into the distance it not only maintains eyesight but counters depression so keep it up.

What has changed is that on the desktop version clicking the red takes you down to the first unread post. Previously on the DT version of you clicked the last post date it took you to the end of the thread and all in read posts will be highlighted with “new”. That is now not the case but as you are taken to the first unread post it is logic that all the following posts have not been read! The
Mobile version has not changed.
I always tend to use the mobile version and as a mod i have to check every post to ensure it is within the rules of not libellous. I start opening the lowest thread with the red “new” to read the new post/s and work my way up. If the list show the stickies still have a red I then open the sticky.
I do find it strange that one can train one’s eyes to ignore blatant red “new” on them first three threads in the list!
Don't you ever skip over content that you believe you've read. In my defence its now a bolder red isn't it?

For avoidance of doubt, to us Mods they are either:
* Items of current interest, worth revisiting while they remain current (e.g. Match Preview)
* Items of enduring value (e.g. Bath Squad and update)
* Important topics we want people to read (e.g. Referendum on our Future)
You voted, so obviously noticed the sticky!
Also I seem to recall Ballsout commented on most Match Previews last season, so his eyeball training may be a new, close-season, exercise regime.

I usually skip over anything about the front row, (current "new boys" article excepted) simply because I don't understand the dark arts!

If there is a red “new” on a thread I open the thread however old! It’s a discipline I have to have as a mod but I also don’t like to see a board listing with unread threads. Once opened I read the unread posts with the red “new” I may skim if the content looks above board and not to my interest!
I wasn’t referring to you as strange BTW! It is anyone who has trained their eyes to ignore the top three stickies that may have a red “new”!

Its not a criticism PG
Don't worry-I did not take it as one.
I did think a little clarification useful as a few missed the vote, maybe because they too don't pay much attention to stickies.

Making something sticky is good for threads that are long term and don't get updated much, but when you have a post that's constantly being updated, it would have been better to have it as part of the main threads, being bumped each time. More noticeable and you probably would have got more votes that way.

But I have no gripes or grumbles as its my fault for not looking hard enough. Would have gone with whatever was the preferred route in order to maintain the community.
Carry on team!

Hi CC, its my fault, I dont look at the stickies
Careful, CC will call you "strange" for saying that
No problem Ade, but please open the new story stickies as every one who opens these earns money for us to donate to charity.
We have made the decision to retain the status quo so there is no need to continue voting. If the desire arises after this season ends to review the situation we will conduct another poll.

Yes I do find it strange! My curiosity if I see a marker that there is a new post is to look at it!
We're (or at least I'm) saying we don't see the marker, because our eyes have been trained to start from lower down and the regular threads.

Who ever said that you can't teach old eyes new tricks.
They are! They're saying they can't teach their eyes to see the red new post markers.

The new board design has made it easier to spot new threads but before that i would miss stickies 90% of the time and I think a lot of people do.
Contradicting himself!

Ah, I think that it is being said that they have taught their eyes to not see them! OK, I'm confused now.

It appears BO has trained his eyes to ignore the first two red “new” and go straight to the fourth! That is quite a feat it has to be said!
Three people so far have said they skim past stickies, and others might be too polite to say. At least one didn't vote because they didn't see this thread. What does that tell you. A little less ridicule maybe, a little more understanding a potential flaw in your planning.
And in no way did I contradict myself, stop inventing things. I said the new design made things more clear, but I and it seems others, skim past stickies regardless, just perhaps to a lesser degree.

Well my thread was started well after the SN changes which you acknowledge has made things more clear. So there is no excuse of missing a sticky with a new post on it as marked above. The fact that you choose to ignore stickies with new markers is not a flaw of the system but a flaw in your usage of message boards.
You should tell the others above who don't read stickies that they're flawed too.
I'll put it simply for you to understand, one last time. "More clear" does not mean I instantly notice every sticky every time I log onto the board. More clear means better, but not enough to stop me from missing them. The difference is that now I miss them 7 or 8 times out of 10, instead of 9 times out of 10.
I never said there was a flaw with the message board system. I said there was a flaw in the way you posted this poll. At least two or three people in the last couple of days have already said they've either missed, or nearly missed this entire thread because it was stickied. So already that's evidence right there.

Yep poor old BO will have problems on your new V22 board as well, as your stickies do exactly what ours do!

In hindsight, whilst we would have been delighted to welcome you to VFT22, perhaps we should be grateful for small mercies!

The fairly simple point is try looking for the word 'new' helpfully highlighted in red as you scroll down. It is that simple.
If you can "train" your eyes to ignore the first three threads as they are normally 'stickies', I'm sure you can train them to spot the only word highlighted in red.

I just went to the SN Worcester site. Watching Faithful city posting to himself reminds me of Tom Hanks and Wilson. Very glad that we wouldn’t have moved unless everyone moved (like Sale).
Not everyone will move to VFT22 Quins, Shedweb and Wasps are on separate sites and seem to be well settled. The Glos site on SN has been like Wuss since they started Shedweb. Quite remarkable how it has survived since 2003!

Its a mystery how the Glos site on SN never disappeared even though nobody ever posted on it. Wasps in particular, on the other hand, regularly disappeared in spite of being very active, presumably because they failed to post front page articles regularly enough. Bizarre!
Of the prior 12 threads started since the end of last season, 10 were posted by ‘shedloads” and 1 by Faithful City. The total number of responses to these threads is 1. It’s a ‘one-man’ effort, not a forum.
CoochieCoo is dead right in saying it’s remarkable how it’s survived, but there’s a question about how you judge “survived”....it's either in a coma or a persistent vegetative condition.
Moral of the story.....split forums don’t work. I’m glad you guys have taken a clear decision regarding your position.
It's just on the home page.
Good luck for the new season!
