5 into 4 : Sale v Bath Match Preview
Hotter than a Curry?
By Mr Frivolous
September 10 2020
Nobody can say this season hasn’t been different and if you are Blue, Black and White fan you have will have realised that’s its pretty good to be supporting Bath right now with five wins from six since restart and an emerging style that’s brought a smile.
Sitting fifth in the table with sixth now a distant thirteen points behind, three matches to go and only four points separating second from fifth perhaps a real chance of getting into the top four and qualifying for the semi-finals? It’s a fair few years ago we could say that, even the most hard-bitten pundits have started to notice.
Just the small matter of winning the last three matches then, starting with a trip to Sale on Sunday. If the last three results with our friends from the north are anything to go by it will be close. With a win a piece and a draw, all settled by three points or less in what can only be described as a hard-fought tussle or one for the purists.
Not surprising they have been close, with both teams fielding physical front fives, poaching back rows and very capable at the set piece. With what’s at stake expect both teams to field their strongest teams with high quality match ups across the park, expect the battles between the England flankers Curry & Underhill and scrum halves De Klerk & Spencer to be key. Bath will need to be wary of Sale’s bulldozing centres and expect Sale to try to negate Bath’s edge in kicking for territory. All in all, if both teams live up to their potential it will be close
Just for once this game appears to be being played in the decent weather rather than the depths of winter so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the backs will get the ball in hand rather than over their heads and if the game is close, it’s high scoring as quite frankly this fixture owes the fans some tries.
A tough ask for Bath to win as Sale must be the favourites but what is important to remember a losing bonus point could make all the difference if Bristol can help us out and beat our nearest rivals in the table Wasps.
One question for the Blue, Black and White supporters, are you buying into the Hoops era yet?

Was happy with the appointment as I know the type of person he is. Its still early days and there isnt a quick fix, but we are going in the right direction. Its nice that there is a clear plan and happy with the recruitment and retention so far.
I hope Hoops and all continue to prove the doubters wrong.
Id love four points from this game, but is not the end of the world if it goes the wrong way. Sale are a serious team, and if ( going with the heart ) we dont win it overall then I really hope they do.

I expect us to go there 'fully loaded'. I'd expect Sale to be pretty much full strength, too.
Someting like:
Obano, Dunn, Stuart, McNally, Ewels (c), Bayliss, Underhill, Faletau
Spencer, Priestland, McCon, Redpath, JJ, Roko, Watson
Walker, Boyce, Judge, Stooke, Reid, Chudley, Matevasi, TdG.
Someting like:
Obano, Dunn, Stuart, McNally, Ewels (c), Bayliss, Underhill, Faletau
Spencer, Priestland, McCon, Redpath, JJ, Roko, Watson
Walker, Boyce, Judge, Stooke, Reid, Chudley, Matevasi, TdG.
This is the squad i would go for as well.
Do you try and counter their physical midfield or do you just pick based on your own strengths. I would do the latter and play redpath/jj, you aren't going to win a physical battle whatever if they go jvr/manu.
Backrow is going to be an issue combating the Curry twins - I think Miles Reid or Bayliss are the best bet but would not be surprised to see Mike Williams in the back row for his combativeness he is handful in the tight and defence.
Roko has also played a lot of minutes since restart so may be rested.
My XV would be along the lines of:
Obano, Dunn, Stuart, Ewels, Spencer, Underhill, TF, Williams, Spencer, Priestland, RM, Matevasi, JJ, Harmer-Webb, Watson.
Schuman, Batty, Thomas, Stooke, Bayliss, Chudley, Tom De G, Joe C(If fit) or Max C
TdG and Redpath are racking up quite a few minutes for young players.
No player will play more than 180 minutes if selected in a matchday 23 on three occasions in a week No player will start all three games in a week No player will be selected in more than six matches in the seven games staged between 14 August and 13 September A players training load will be managed if they are selected in three matchday squads in any given seven-day period

So it could be another bench spot for Bailey.

Guess we have had little option in reality so hard to criticise the planning, would have been a brave man who picked bailey to start with no cover.
Assume this impacts others? Boyce/walker/judge have been in every 23? Has chudley aswell? Tdg?
Also if games 18-20 count as a week, then I don't think they can start Dan du Preez either. I would caveat that i ran through the numbers quickly but i think this is correct.
Good we got some game time into schoeman, batty, verden , green and bailey if they will be needed sunday.
Very strange - hence why I personally believe it may be more to do with Covid and you could only imagine the rage of Diamond given the penalty for not fulfilling a fixture....
Quote:seb
What is the penalty for not fulfilling a fixture?
20-0 to the non offending team!
Like the freudian slip in your post NiD - would that be Castle Lager or Lion?

what kind of 20-0? bonus point try kind of 20-0?
Not clear, asked about that before but seems highly unlikely there would be a bonus point.

Sale vs Bath and Wasps vs Bris - the shootout for a/ top 4 and b/ the right to not finish 4th (ie play Exeter > lose)
Sarries vs Exeter - the 2020 GP final that never was
Quins vs Glos - mano a mano for mid-table mediocrity
Tigers vs Saints - freefalling Saints vs the true relegation candidates
Wuss vs LI - meh vs meh

Good spot .... if it comes down to that choice then meh.

From memory, the 20-0 is counted as 4 unconverted tries.
Do we have to nominate someone to miss the kicks for the player stats?

I think it should be a penalty try, its penalty for not being able to put a team out. Takes the load of the stats for NID as well.

It appears on paper that both sides have chosen very much understrength teams.
Is that coincidence, spying on each other or perhaps some exchange of information between coaches? Or just pragmatic selection regarding each other's position in the table?

Interesting observation regarding the Saracens Exeter game and team selection.

From the bent pins info..Diamond must be really gagging for Load of Lager to play, not surprising as he is brilliant in the line out for them.
For me If we don't make the playoff's , I'd like to see Wasps then (sorry) Brizz win it. Respect Exeter but if not us,nice to see another team win it, more democratic...

Could be a very attritional match with a preponderance of power players on both sides. Sale certainly have some top performers considering they are apparently missing a few. Presumably home advantage doesnt make much difference nowadays but we will have to be canny in all departments to come out on top.
Bookies have the home side odds on for this one - Oddschecker Bath Rugby.

True, but I think TdG can cope, actually I hope the feed Rory Mc in that way, he can certainly handle them and he has shown how well he can poach tries.

Quote:I think that is the same for some of our players too, Josh M for example.Never In Doubt
So I am confused, according to Sale website Faf de Klerk has been selected in the last 6 match XXIII's but did not get onto the pitch in one game. Does that mean he was selected according to the welfare rules or not?
The welfare word says selected for the 6 out of 7 matches point, but doesnt say selected in a matchday 23 as in the 180 minutes per week point.
Which could mean that it can be interpreted that if the player stayed on the bench they werent selected, I suppose.
Quote:Never In Doubt
You are probably right. I think these 'rules' were designed to be fudged.
Yes - I think they were. But, it would also be absolute nonsense to have to exclude a player on the basis of sitting in the bench for the full 80.

Agreed Opti. Just wonder if we were asking too much for the rules to have been well defined!
A very physical game coming, but think we have enough to win this.

Have to give a mention to Rhys break!
I could be harsh and say that it clearly took the rest of the Bath team by complete surprise, hence no one up in support
Rhys has done ok though some of his passes are back to being slow and yards behind the gain line. Just an observation but both of our tries came with Rhys not involved
RMc try saving tackle was exceptional, nice little break from RP and TDG and GHW look lively. Just need to keep it up now.

1-23 were all absolutely superb. The impact from the bench was immense in the last 20, W Spencer and Redpath especially. Ben Spencer, MotM yet again for me, really is a special player.
Best win in a long, long while. Well done all involved.

Ab Fab effort and a wonderful BP win. A few days in the spa to r&r then go again v glaws. Thrilling stuff. Who got MotM?
I dont think there is one as it wasnt technically a broadcast match so no co-commentator to pick it, plenty of contenders though
- When scrums worked we got looked on top and earned critical penalties
- Line out was exceptional with good own ball and several Ewels steals (......if only he threw more punches!)
- Back row decent maybe the only area where Sale sneaked it
- Spencer/Priestland starting to work. Immense performance (again) from Spencer and super kicking from Rhys. We also are starting to look positive in attack.
- Centres held their own and JJ kick for the try was instinctively good.
- McC try again exceptional .... that was Tuilagi he bumped off
- GHW decent and Tom DeG looking more and more confident.
Only poorly executed, lazy and predictable performance was from Ballsout.
Yes we made mistakes and yes we invited pressure at times but damn they worked for each other, made great defensive saves and we seemed to have learnt how to score tries again.
Wooooop Wooop!

Fantastic win which I will take anytime, even with the odd mistake. I used to play cricket with a captain who used to say if we sneaked a win we didn't deserve , 'Look in the scorebook mate. We won , you didn't.' Not saying we didn't deserve it but we got it.
Am absolutely floating on cloud 9 , backed up by a large glass or three!
Trouble is to make top 4, we need to beat Glos with a bonus point and get a win at Sarries me thinks as Sale and Bris should win their last two games. Might come down to us wanting Exeter to beat Wasps away to let us in and keep Wasps out. That would be a fairy tale end to the season, even if we get humped at The Chiefs.

I have been openly critical when I have felt they deserved it but that was an incredible performance and result by Bath. It feels like we are building in a way I havent felt since 2015. Whatever happens next this season, we have come out of lockdown a new team and the boys should all be proud.
A week off now then back to it!
Amazing what having no injuries does. And Spencer.

Funny how BO goes quiet once Bath get on top. He really must be gutted at the moment.
Still think top 4 will be a big ask - really need Sarries to beat Leinster don't we?

Still trying to believe that we actually won a game up at Sale. Fantastic result. We normally can rely on the game being played on a wet and dismal Friday night with us getting 'nul points'. Don't want to single out one player but cannot stop looking beyond Ben Spencer for the huge difference that he is making. Onwards and upwards!!
I have been going on/off for c35yr and can't recall seeing a win at Heywood Rd, Stockport County or the AJ. Would have been there this year but for Covid. Still, every cloud etc...

Question for the mods. Is there an issue with the site, it seems some posters cant post when Bath play well and win 😀
"It's all right, Andy! It's just bolognaise!"
Special mention to the front 5 and Underhill, Bayliss and Ellis. Very dominant in contact I thought, both as tacklers and carriers. For all the noise about their pack, ours was better.
B. Spencer. What a difference when your 9 can be a play maker like Aaron Smith. Seeing the opportunity and wizzing a pass for 15 yards that sets up a try.
Ill say it again TdG always looks like the game slows down for him just a fraction. Thats an awesome ability. Very composed. Good skill set too.
We have got a recent habit of being a bit sleepy for the 1st 15 minutes of a game. Were recovering well which is brilliant. Im sure SH would like us firing from the off though.
I probably don't know what i'm talking about.
I rather think you do!
Anyone know what happened at the final whistle with the pushing and shoving? My guess (with little evidence) was that one of their lads (Ross?) said something to Redpath, Id imagine about leaving Sale to chase the cash, or somesuch. Nice to see Dunn pile in with Redpath! Might be completely wrong on all of that but Redpath did his talking on the pitch. He was immense for 20 minutes, with some big hits, a couple of turnovers and a monster kick or two.

I was wondering about that little fracas, thought Dunn may have said something to Jono Ross to excite him. I can see why Ross may have been a bit peeved having spent 10 first half mins in the bin quickly followed by one of his mates. Dunny deserves a places in the EPS this autumn but EJ won't pick him. Sad news for him, great news for the BB&W...

Final score Sale 22 - Bath 37 Isn't that proof that continuous possession is not a prerequisite to victory? Brilliant result Ben Spencer is running the game from 9, RP kicks the penalties and Rory looks as good as Watson.

That, along with RMc's 7 point tackle and Spencer's kick for JJ's try sums up everything that is different about our team now

Anybody know what Mrs Diamond had to say post match?
OOPS ! That was supposed to be Mr S Diamond
He's not thrown his toys out of the pram:
Sale boss Steve Diamond:
"We didn't play well and they played pretty well. They stuck to their guns and sorted us out in the lineout. We had no answer to that.
"If you can't get any set-piece ball and you get two yellow cards, and you give double figure penalties away, maybe we've reached our level. Maybe we're not good enough to be in the top four and that's what I said to the lads.
"Take nothing away from Bath, they were good, very good, but equally we created a lot of chances. It wasn't as though there was no invention but, if you give two yellow cards away and you can't win a lineout, we're doing well to score 22 points."

The forwards, along with Ben and Rhys were super but a couple of players really stood out also.
JJ has, IMO been quiet lately but he excelled today. And big call out for Will Spencer. His muscle and effort were very telling. Best I have seen him ever in the BBW, albeit a short appearance.
One final mention. I have been one of Matt Carleys biggest critics, I despaired when he was named for our games. But fair play to him. His decisions were explained and made clear, and most importantly he is developing a real empathy for the game. Long may it continue.
I probably don't know what i'm talking about.

JJ has, IMO been quiet lately but he excelled today.
Good point he has come alive in part because he sees he might get some ball, I liked the way Ben S put a kick under the posts in the first half for him to chase almost as a dress rehearsal for the same to happen in the 78th minute and for JJ to score the BP try.

My only concern is on the injury front, Will Spencer had a nasty under eye split, JJ limped of and AW wasn't available through injury. Thank goodness Ben Spencer is bulletproof!
Perhaps I'm a latent criminal but I just love the way BS and RMcC keep stealing tries from under the opposition's noses!

Today the pack were again awesome, you don't go to Sale and win without an outstanding pack.
My word Hatley is good, we knew it first time he was with us but he seems to have got better. Well played Hooper, you're the man at the top and credit needs to go to you.
Of course for those that are concerned with silverware we haven't won a trophy for a while, since when, about 1865? But it does feel good to be following Bath again.
Fwiw, Sarries also were doing this very well a couple of seasons ago.
Weve just to get on the shoulder more of a runner and make it happen. Have a bit more confidence in the skill set. English players often look to afraid to make a mistake. Not just in rugby either. National disease imho.
I probably don't know what i'm talking about.

I'm probably guilty of 'highlights syndrome' when it comes to SH rugby - but, try watching Bath/Sale again, knowing the result, and also pretending you don't care which team wins anyway. I guarantee that very few people would sit through 100+ minutes of that for the sheer quality of the rugby.
Again - for the avoidance of doubt - that was a phenomenal 'performance' by Bath, a massive step forward for the team, a huge boost for Hooper's standing, and something to give every supporter confidence that we are on the threshold of being a top 4 team, with all the equipment to put in a competitive performance in Europe too.
Another feather in Hooper's cap is the quality of recruitment: Will Stuart, Redpath and Ben Spencer have got to be as good a trio of recruits as GP club have made.

Tbf, Opti was talking about the Aotaeroa so you know, different country...
Despite efforts being made to turn rugby into a fast-paced, open game that appeals to neutrals and new comers, there are still a host of ways to win a game and one very popular one doesn't involve risk and adventure. It involves a focus on defence and set piece, kicking from 9 and 10 and consistent if not game changing attack. As we all know, in the Prem, over the last decade, Exeter and Saracens have shown that it works. Sure, they bolted on very effective attacking games but they won leagues doing the basics. I like how Bath are quite clearly trying to do the same.
Now the problem is that a new comer to the sport will turn on the TV, not understand that Bath are trying to 'do an Exeter' and are a few years away from being an all-singing-all-dancing team and perhaps switch off. I get that and I think rules and improvements have been made to get us to a point where the 'product' is just about good enough for the new comer. But selfishly, as someone who watches a lot and knows a little about rugby, I'm fascinated by even the bad games, as there's always something of interest, a sub plot, a plan etc.
It's why I also don't buy the argument that players must 'love playing for Bristol' (or Northampton earlier in the season) because they throw it about. Professional rugby players love winning. End of. Even wingers who get cold stood out on the touchline chasing box kicks all day, would rather do it for a team that wins 3-0. If your wingers don't, you need new wingers. So whilst it's great to watch what Bristol are trying to do and it might (might...) work one day, I don't think in this league it will work consistently enough to win multiple titles (like Leicester, Sarries, Exe).
Hence, whilst it pains me a bit to watch a boring game of rugby, as long as I can see why a team is trying to do what they're trying to do i.e. Bath, Hooper, and Hatley are focusing on basics
and winning, I am hooked.

Interesting point, opti, and as a former back I agree that the game wasn't 100 minutes of poetry (barely 10 minutes for that matter), especially for a neutral. But I think that's why, in a nutshell, for me, rugby is still so fascinating and why I find a 12-6 almost but not quite preferable to a 39-33.

I did not know any of the sport results until I got home.
First up, hearing that Hamilton won in a chaotic Grand Prix,
2nd, hearing that England beat the Aussies (always satisfying!),
then hearing that Bath had won away at Sale!!
What a wonderful end to a wonderful day!
Well done Bath!
Very good result, difficult to pick any Bath player out as they all played well. Felt a bit sorry watching Steve Diamond he looked so on edge, gulping down great gulps of air, i would worry for his long term health.
Well done Bath, showing real signs of improvement.
Obviously a lot of teams played emerging talent so that would have helped..............but all the same

I don't normally do this, but i visited the Sale forum to read the fans view of the game, most seem to think they lost the game at the line-out and heavy criticism of their hooker. Many being realistic and saying the loss was down to there own misgivings. Also several blaming their captain Jonno Ross for making the wrong decisions and getting the wrong side of the ref with his constant questioning of his decisions. It seems this happens often with J Ross and referees . Some blame Will Stuart for so called indiscretions at scrum time. Overall a philosophical view from many but of course the usual few blaming the ref. and saying Bath did not do anything special but won the game on the back of Sale mistakes. Happy Days !
I think have really bought into the idea of being the strongest and most aggressive pack. Unfortunately for them, theyre not. They got done by ours on their home turf. Our hits were bigger and more telling.

From my angle the greatest asset Hoops and Hats have instilled over the Covid lockdown is the bonhomie. All the players are a happy bunch and enjoying life. As I have said before a good team spirit (Players and Coaches) make for a winning combination. Onwards and upwards.
I've said it before, but 'team spirit' and 'winning' are very much a chicken and egg kind of thing. If anything, I'd say the team spirit was forged in those very narrow victories that the team carved out in the first part of the season. We won 3 consecutive GP games in Jan/Feb by 3 points, 1 point and 7 points. Those games can just as easily go against you for not much more than the bounce of a ball or a kick that goes 6 inches wide.
Did we win those games through 'team spirit'? Partly, yes. But a bit of luck played its part. If all 3 had gone the other way would team spirit be close to what it is now? I doubt it.
The team spirit does look fantastic and all power to Hooper for that. But winning comes first in my opinion.
He may not quite be back to doing the flashy stuff yet but his workrate is huge.
Perhaps TF is coming to the boil at the perfect point of the season? Guys like him win big matches
we have seemingly corrected many of the problems that have afflicted us in recent seasons such as poor fitness levels, excessive injuries, inability to score points and lack of self confidence. this is one issue that still plagues us.
Quote:bardofavon
it would be good if we didn't give away so many early points
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that i don't really care when we give away points in the game, as long as we have scored more than the opposition at the final whistle. It's a very competitive league, and at some point in the game we will concede, whoever we are playing. Besides, didn't we, until recently, have a habit of conceding points at the end of the game?

All excellent players and hopefully will be for many years to come, but I feel like there has been a bit of quantum leap with Spencer in terms of what we needed to pull the whole together. His calm accuracy under pressure, quick service and genuine running threat seems to have made everyone around him bloom.

One of the good things is that Chudley, in terms of style, is very much a Spencer like-for-like, and so, should one or other miss a period, there's no need to change playing style particularly. And the way our defence and set piece are at the moment, it's pretty unlikely that we're ever going to be chasing more than a score or two, so there's no real need to have a completely different option on the bench.

So what is Mr Dempsey doing or adding to the party? Yes RP has been very good (at goal kicking and libs kicking) but not so much in getting the line moving. Spencer with his miss passes has added much more, and makes RP look good. Without Mr S I wonder if we would be in the position we are now. Not that I am decrying it, just want to see more flowing backs moves from a talented group of individuals.
+ 1 By now I would have been expecting our back line to be more like Leinster at their pomp
The effect of this is that RP and the backs have an extra "second"....................that is really important!

To be fair to Mr Dempsey..................we now have a set piece that is 95% certain of winning line out ball and very likely to win controlled quality scrum ball.....................we also have a scrumhalf who gets on with it.

Id say thats precisely the opposite of being fair to Mr Dempsey. All of what you evidence makes him look even worse. If you cant produce coherent attacking backs play from that set of advantages then its hard to imagine you ever will.

To be fair to Mr Dempsey..................we now have a set piece that is 95% certain of winning line out ball and very likely to win controlled quality scrum ball.....................we also have a scrumhalf who gets on with it.
The effect of this is that RP and the backs have an extra "second"....................that is really important!

Well Freddie in his recent interview would seem to disagree. He says Dempsey is a good coach with great ideas but is constrained by Hooper and Hatley
That may be a myopic perception but it is either true and Dempsey has the ability and vision for something more exciting and is content, for time being at least, to go along with the 'layered' strategy or it isn't and Hooper is content with an underperforming attack coach
Still very odd, whichever reality you buy

Yes I read that interview and felt a bit sad / disappointed that he is still having a gripe about how it all wasn't fair and how he wasn't given a chance to become one of the very best 10s in the world. IMO he came across as bitter and a bit deluded which is a shame, whether he has a point or not, because I have been a big fan in the past. The sooner that he can get to Japan and start scoring some points for his new team the better he will feel, I'm sure.
[Edit: apologies I see that this also crosses the 'gainsayers' thread]

And I don't think any of them went through the fly half
Maybe that's our attack strategy, more opportunistic than rehearsed?
NID: 'I think back development was de-prioritised' - that also sounds like a reasonable interpretation (and possibly a reasonable approach).
Gaz: 'Maybe that's our attack strategy, more opportunistic than rehearsed?' .... also agree that this is probably true - our aggressive defence has 'created' a lot of opportunities.
With Hooper's authority at an all-time high, it's fair to say that his approach has been vindicated, and so I do feel as though we can expect to see more attacking options layered on in the coming months.
Adopted player 2019/20 Will Chudley. Weird split household co-parented
player 2020 Josh Matavesi
Priestland doesn't seem to be involved in the last phase as he has gone to the other side of the ruck to make it look like we are going right. This looks like a really good team try with lots of phases and different skill sets. They have been rare but we should acknowledge them when they happen.
Don't get me wrong, our attacking play for most of the season has been awful but it only seems fair to say that it is now improving.

That's been true for years, it's why our scores tend to come out of the blue from nothing, rather than sustained pressure.
So his comments might be true for Hooper, but a bit early for Hatley.
'Freddie Burns is an ambassador for the DFY Foundation which uses sport to make a positive impact in the community. It is a non-profit organisation aiming to inspire kids from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their full potential'.
The fact that he's quotable and currently in a situation where he has a bit more freedom to speak his mind means the media give him space/airtime.

Am I the only one who would have liked to have seen Fred and Spencer partnered behind this pack for a few games?
Would have been interesting for 60 mins until Freddie had to go off with leg cramping

Bit harsh Gaz, McConnochie try looks like an attack play developed over several phases with good line out ball, strong line out drive, a couple of mid-field set ups (slightly aimlessly), we go wide to Hamer Webb via Priestland and Matavesi, come back infield via Priestland to create space on both sides and then make a line break down the left via TdG to McConnochie with a dummy line from Joseph.

Wouldn't disagree with the view of it being a quality team try built through several phases. It was just not a clearly rehearsed set of defined moves but relying on players making the right decisions including the long floated miss pass to Hamer Webb
I have no problem with that at all, in fact I think it shows a far more mature attack minded philosophy than relying on the wonder move off first phase
Regarding RP's involvement, it was just a simple pop pass inside to Mcnally I think and then two standard shipped passes
The opportunity and line break came from others
Again, no real problem with that apart from it tells the opposition exactly what to expect from him

It's here Opti
"Burns continued: Girvs [attack coach Girvan Dempsey] is a good coach who has great ideas, but I dont know whether hes being overpowered by the forward pack and way Stuart Hooper and Neal Hatley [head coach] want to play the game."
Looking back at was been posted in last few posts then maybe my point on the overall try is that there is probably a spectrum of ways tries are created.
i) Pack thudding forward in a very limited way
ii) Opportunistic turn overs
iii) Several phases of play designed to create space in a good attacking part of the pitch for key players to capitalise on
iv) Rehearsed first phase move
I think we are mostly using 1&2 but starting to see 3. 4 would be nice to add icing to the cake but given our strengths I think most of our tries will and should come from 1.

Don't know what game you were watching NID, because Ballsout keeps telling us all that Bath drop the ball or get turned over after one phase, and haven't strung two phases together for years.

Yes but this period of the game happened after he stopped posting so it didn't exist in the world of Schrodinger's forums.

It's there for all to see, 90% of the time.
One of the reasons why we ended up with 35% possession at the weekend.
Like I said, great win and dominant for most of the game but it's by far our achilles heel.

That's a pretty good summary NID. However, I think ii requires breaking into 2 parts.
We've started to win turn overs quite a lot in this mini-season through ultra-agressive defence, through the competability of Spencer's box-kics, and through lineout pressure. However, we only use that 'turnover' ball by pumping it straight back in behind, and repeating the aggressive-pressure tactic.
From an entertainment point of view, I'd really like to see us keep the ball in hand on turnovers rather than instinctively kicking it away. But, we're averaging 4+ tries a game now, so it's more of an aesthetic complaint, than an effectiveness one.
On the whole, I think if we win turnover ball in our 22 then the choice is to quickly box kick (or another territory based play) and then compete for the ball in the opposition half or counter attack knowing that you can still kick deep if it doesn't open up. However if you turn the ball over in a more attacking area then the DNA should be to get the ball to our most attacking weapons and go for the line.
Its all about confidence.
If the backs have no confidence that the forwards are going to win good ball very consistently
If the backs are not confident on the scrumhalf delivering snappy accurate passes, THEN
Subconsciously they align flatter because they are concerned that the opposition will get the ball and attack off the base of the scrum, or our fly half will get the ball with a number 7 round his neck or our 10 will kick.
If the above is the case then about the last thing in the world you are thinking about is that move you worked on endlessly at Farleigh.
If the backs believe the ball is going to be won every time with the pack going forward,
If the backs believe that the pass to 10 is going to be perfect ,
It sets everything up for all sorts of moves to develop.
At the weekend I watched Saracens and they interviewed Alex Sanderson who said for years all Saracens could do was kick and tackle and then gradually, OVER TIME, became more expansive.
