Can we dream Bath v Glaws match preview
By Mr Frivilous
September 16 2020
By several quirks of fate, its just over two years since our friends from Gloucester last came to visit us at the Rec
A thrilling 31-31 draw with Bath old boy Matt Banahan scoring in the dying minutes to deny Bath a stunning comeback win from a 7-21 deficit at half time. It’s sad but necessary that this fixture will be played behind closed doors.
There has been a lot of water under the Castle Grim drawbridge since then with changes in leadership, patchy form since the restart, out of the race for the top four and a particularly poor result against Quins last weekend. There’s not much motivation left for climbing the table as the last golden ticket to the Heineken Cup seems virtually assured for Gloucester in eighth place, nine points clear of Worcester with two games to go. Quite the reverse for Bath, a lofty third in the table, a stunning win at Sale last time out and needing a bonus point win to keep in the race for the top four should be enough incentive for Bath.
Both teams not competing in European fixtures this weekend means plenty of rest until Tuesday’s clash, welcome relief after a hectic schedule and time for the coaches and the sports psychologists to do their stuff and ponder over team selections.
For Bath it will be the strongest team possible with perhaps the conundrum of who to starts at half backs, Ben Spencer has been playing like a man possessed and Rhys Powlesland increasingly effective. It’s tempting to start Will Chudley and Josh Matavesi with Ben and Rhys on the bench to keep the half back options fresh for Saracens. One’s thing for sure If Danny Cipriani is playing at 10 facing Josh expect plenty of passing and kicking rather than running down Josh’s channel.
For Gloucester who knows? A potentially easier fixture next up after Bath, at home to Northampton for that last point to secure eighth so it could be the second string, given ninth placed Worcester face Saracens and Sale they are highly unlikely to score the ten points they need to climb into eighth assuming Gloucester remain pointless. Or maybe spoiling Bath’s party will be enough incentive to field the first choice?
This could be a close-run thing if Gloucester select a motivated first XV but hopefully the Hats and Hoops masterplan produces a Bath five pointer, not just for bragging rights but dare we dream for a place in the semi-finals?

Exceptionally tough on some players, for example w spencer, mercer, reid.
Lack of injuries currently does mean we are spoilt for choice in a few positions.
Ineresting to see if we get a sight of coko before the end of the season.

Again I would throw Mike Williams into the mix - he offers a counter to Polledri and is a real enforcer when it comes to the tight.
I would not be surprised to see Underhill, TF or ZM, Williams/Ellis - for me that is a better balance than playing 2 opensides and an 8 and I felt this showed on Sunday when Josh suffered his head knock - we appeared a lot better balanced with the arrival of Ellis...It also improves our Lineout with Williams or Ellis.
We need the same aggressive defence as shown at Sale - we cannot afford to give Cipriani or that Glos backline an inch of room to use their pace.
If all fit I would go for a team such as:
Watson
Roko
JJ
Josh M
RM
RP
BS
Obano
Dunn
Stuart
Ewels
Spencer
Williams/Ellis
Zach M
Underhill
Reps - Boyce, Walker, Judge/Schuman, Stooke, Toby F, Chudley, Joe C (if fit), Tom De G

Agreed - a bird in the hand and all that. And trying to pre-guess what sort of Sarries team we will be facing is impossible.
Hopefully gives time for watson to get back and any minor knocks we receive in glos match to clear up.
Hoping sarries win at the weekend!

Any chance you could amend it to predict a big Gloucester win?

Bayliss or Ellis is a tricky one. Really like Ellis's attitude and he brings good physicality which could be important against Polledri but with the new rules then I think you need 2 mobile flankers like Bayliss and Underhill to prevent turnovers and penalties.
Bayliss clashed heads with TF in a double tackle early in the Sale game and left the field, I would be surprised if he is fit to play on Tuesday next...

Not sure whether to go all dynamic and fast in the back row and back line to counter their running threat or to stick to our strengths of a mostly beef based approach.
Sometimes need to be pragmatic and consider the opposition but personally prefer when squads are selected on own terms. I would initially pick a massive pack and see how we get on in terms of trying to grind them into the dirt (and hope we react better than against wasps if it isn't happening for whatever reason).
I loved it when the AB's picked barrett at 6-absolute admission they were worried by England's power.

Amen to that. Or, as you youngsters say, +1

Good call Clarkey. I forget what the return to play protocols are but given our back row options are: Faletau, Mercer, Underhill, Ellis, Reid and Williams then it seems foolish to rush him back if unsure.
Guess with a 9 day turnaround his chances are improved but agree it would be crazy to take any risks, esp when you consider the options available.
Shows the progress of bayliss over the last year or so that many of us would have him in the 23 over the likes of williams, ellis, mercer. Reid looks to the manner born esp when you think he was out for several mths with his acl.

Based on game stats, I would go Faletau to start to keep the beefy pressure and tight aggressive defence with Mercer on bench to come on with 20 to go with opposition tiring, especially if one or two tries needed for bonus point or simply to win the game
a) receiver went into contact and we lost ball in turnover
b) receiver not expecting pass and dropped ball
or
c) receiver glides through gap
or none above!

Knocked on in contact. We win scrum penalty. Rhys kicks to corner. 5 points from Dunny at the back of the maul.

I think that Hoops has about 35 players fit who are all pretty interchangeable and that for this game Ellis and TF are the beef to keep control of Polledri and Ackerman. Reid is more versatile than Zach, for me is an 8 pure and simple. Not sure there is anything sinister about it.
In relation to Will Spencer I'm sure he is just off trying to get is nose back into nose shape after the other week.

Hopefully it’s just a sensible tactical decision for this match or a player health decision.
The Daily Mail reported some of his team mates turned up at Mercer’s house to convince him to stay at the club long term and have been successful in doing so.

Fellow backrow star Zach Mercer, 23, also looks set to extend his time at Bath having originally refused to take a 25 percent pay cut.
The Daily Mail reported some of his team mates turned up at Mercer’s house to convince him to stay at the club long term and have been successful in doing so.
Bet they broke lockdown to do that! Mercer would be nuts to fall out with Hooper at this point in the clubs development!

another problem for Zac is that Eddie looks to have moved on. so many other young backrowers coming onto the market.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
Sure, he didn't want to take a pay cut/perhaps wanted more opportunities so made hard work of renegotiating. But then he signed his contract, fully in the knowledge that the Lions No 8 was at the club and that there were more versatile back rowers who could fill the bench slots.
More likely, Faletau has found some form in a team that keeps winning so is getting picked and Zach hasn't had his best few games so is working hard off the field to try and win back the shirt. Start of next season the 8 shirt is Zach's for the first 6-8 weeks so he'll get plenty of rugby.
It'd be a helluva shame to lose him, but if he chose to leave because of the above stated situation then I'd be inclined to say 'good riddance'. But, again, there's no evidence he's unhappy let alone going anywhere, let alone to inside centre!

Starting to worry about Zach. By one account he had to be persuaded to stay this season by the other players - is he another 'maverick' player/character who may not fit Hooper's straitlace? Or can someone 'reassure' me that he is injured?
Bath failing to retain Zach Mercer would be crazy, he's a superb player and leader. He's been topping the charts with meters made and defenders beaten. If the club are serious about having home grown talent at the heart of the team why would you let a player as good as Zach go? Surely retaining him must take priority over a superstar, even someone as good as Taulupe Faletau.
To my mind he's a player to build the team around.

He will get plenty of opportunities to play in the months ahead ...... and be able to learn off of Toby.
Seems everybody wins!
No idea if he is injured but if not then i think the others have just earnt the jerseys since restart whilst zac has been a bit hit and miss.
I agree that zac is more of an out and out 8 whereas bayliss and reid look more adaptable playing across the positions which marks them out as great bench options.
Zac is class and is a major asset but so too are faletau, underhill, ellis, reid, and bayliss. It has been an extremely rare luxury for us to most fit for most games since restart...has often been last 4 standing make the 23 in the past.
Hopefully we can keep them all happy, will certainly all get plenty of game time.

On a different note I see the Tigers have signed an Argentine fly half, not even mentioned on our radar which I find strange unless Hoops really has laid specific requirements to suit his game plan.

Amazing how these things escalate!

I'd say one of the key requirements for our signing at 10, is that the player is also capable/happy playing at 12 and/or 15 - which makes Willemse and Miotto interesting options.
If Bailey is to develop into our first-choice 10 in 2-3 seasons' time, then our Priestland replacement has to be able to play in the same team as Bailey, rather than being a one or other selection.
Has Alex Goode been the most unrecognised player of his generation?

Bonilla is also a level down from what we are seeking and will be back up option for Ford not a starting 10 in big games

Slightly off thread but I would have thought we want a 25 - 28 year old....................who is mentioned in international selection but never quite gets in the squad who as Opti says above is a bit of a Mike Catt/Alex Goode character, ie can play 10, 15, 12 .
Has Alex Goode been the most unrecognised player of his generation?
I think Alex Goode is widely recognised as being one of the very best club players since professionalism. However he is one of those who just didn't quite cut it at international level having been given his opportunities, and subsequently discarded.

I know that has often been said of Goode though the odd thing is that many of his spectacular performances, like away against Leinster in a Euro QF, have been in games that have been close to the intensity of internationals
Could it be something other than he can't cut it at the highest level of the game. The players around him, the coaching maybe?

The offload off the floor in the wet to take out a defender and free Joe C from McNally was for me the play of the game. Him and Stuart work so hard and have been instrumental in binding the back, and the skillset from Josh to trust himself at such a key point in the game, fantastic.
I don’t want to smite Rhys too much as he fixed his kicking at goal brilliantly, but a dynamic ten will add something extra and afford JJ etc more of a range of plays to utilise which can only benefit them.
Credit to Watson as well, perfect under the high ball and a constant threat. And to Hooper who made a visible effort to go to Matavesi who’s substitution changed the game and give him a hug - team spirit tangible.
Annoying first 60 though. As usual, when we put in all the effort for the first 10 minutes but get no points we seem to retreat within ourselves. How May got away with that obvious trip I dunno and how Rapava-Ruskin can get a penalty near their line but 2 mins later Redpath’s exact same doesn’t count and they go over for a try is beyond me. Mind you, I wasn’t sure on one of our groundings, so I guess it all balances out in the end.
Fair play to Ballsout for sitting out this one early doors - our performance was doing his Victor Meldrew impression for him.

I really believe we can beat Sarries and get 2nd or 3rd. We knwo we can beat Sale, Wasps or Bristol then it would be chiefs in the final. Then who knows they could have just been beaten up in Euro final after a hard game against Toulose this week. SO YES WE CAN DREAM AND I ALREADY AM.
Then I go to the loo and grad yet another drink to drown my expectations. Return to see Dunner get over, and Rhys convert a very difficult kick, after missing much simpler ones earlier. Then another Dunner effort after some wonderful rumbustious tackling and scrapping for the ball, which is very unbath like previously. Then more fight, excellent handling by Mcnally to put big Joe clear who produced top class pass for the supporting Spencer, Then conversion. Did the BB and W do that? Am I dreaming? I hope this dream continues and I never have to disbelieve again.
Very well done Bath. Men of the match for me, Dunner, Underhill (that tackle felt painful just watching from my living room), and Spencer. Watson and Faletau both were very good as well and Stuart put in a huge 80 minute shift. Keep it up lads, now for Sarries where I don't think we have won at Allianz stadium, and I might have dreams of beating the Chiefs in the final.

Love this comment from the Offy.
'Tom Dunn crashed over twice within five minutes taking his season tally up to seven. His first score saw him peel off the maul beautifully and dive over, the second a classic pick and go with strong intent. '
Peeling, beautifully, off the maul is something that I need to see - hurry up with the highlights Gallaghers, please.

We were very, very lucky. We made a lot of it ourselves but better sides will not let us back in. I thought we looked like we believed our own hype for 60 minutes. But we pulled it around and that is a huge plus for the development of the team. Plus it was Glaws, which is always sweet.
My MOTM - Ben Spencer (again). I pray he doesn't get injured.

Agree - Charteris for me has been brilliant, our lineout looks so slick these days.

Ben Spencer 3 in 6 matches
Will Chudley 5 in 32
Chris Cook 6 in 89

For the first time in many seasons Bath can hold their heads high and fear no team. It's a good feeling. Shame we are unable to share it with them at the Rec.

This is truly painful and shows our huge shortcomings, most importantly it reiterates our inability to deal with teams who stop our pack/gameplan A.
The big question is - Is it our players or our coaches?
Not a brilliant first 60 minutes but these things sometimes happen even to the best teams. What a relief , though, that the blame game merchants can’t get stuck in again

Now then, just to fast-forward the first 60 minutes.......

proud and happy fan. Even if we come up short against a fully loaded Sarries and dont make top 4, its been a brilliant few weeks. long may it continue.
Agree with this, if we had lost last night it would have been, "same old story" if we lose against Sarries given their recent success its with heads held high. Thing is, a win is very much on the cards still.

On the other hand Twelvetrees had a 62% success ratio going into last night and I think made all his kicks.
The Gloucester flyhalf was electric and he is number 2 to Cipriani..........

Quote:shipwrecked
The more you watch that last try the more you have to give credit to Joe C, its his footwork that beats Lloyd Evans then he batts away Singleton to put Spencer in. All after RP went to the wrong side and Watson corrected it.
Not sure RP goes the wrong way. When he receives the ball he only has one Bath player to his left and he is 20m in front of him. Unless he wants to kick he has to go right and link with AW. However the work AW does to get to the left of 4 Glos defenders is critical and without then getting outside the defender we are looking at slow or turnover ball.
The other impressive small thing is how Dunn and Faletau expect him to edge the gainline so wait for this to happen before committing to the fast clear out.
Also well worth noting on this clip, how hard Dunn works to get back to RP and AW to be able to clear out. He must have been exhausted at this stage but these extra efforts make the try.

We clearly went out with a game plan to play a bit wider yesterday. The wind and our skill level didn't really allow that to be effective. So we changed the game plan, focussed and executed. Just great to see. Also it's clear from the player interviews that they got an absolute bollocking in the changing room at the half.

I know I should favour the cultured, reasonable, intelligent reprimand but I love it when they get a proper half time roasting!

Still really puzzled by our play away from the tight 5 for 60 mins of this match. Was just not good enough. Josh M wasn't having a good game which doesn't help but we so rarely seem to engineer a position where JJ has the ball and a line to attack the outside shoulder of his opposite 13. It's certainly not down to him. We just seemingly can't tighten the oppos 10, 12 & 13 to make this happen. Teams certainly do it to us but we can't seem to.
I love Watson but he's got to use these runs to draw defenders in and then PASS!
Faletau looked pretty good. Not marquee level but at least he looked like he belonged there. Maybe it's taking him longer than expected to get fully sharp and confident. Lots of quiet but effective stuff from him. Good for everyone if he continues improving.
Ben Spencer is our most influential player. By a mile.
Thought Reid looked very good. Think he's worth a look in ahead of Ellis unless it's because of line out options.
Underhill. A hobbit's name but the head and shoulders of an Orc (Azog in particular...). Good game from him. Thought he could have drifted to the right wing when he broke the line. Drawn the defender and played our winger in. Think it was RM by that stage.
Boycee! Really hard to stop when he picks and goes like that. He's practically horizontal for about 5 metres or so. Good in the scrum too.
McNally. Great offload. We really to be doing way more of these. Makes a world of difference.
Tough match next time out, even if it's a Saracens 2nd string. Coming back like that will help the Bath players mentality though. It's fine and well talking about it but they saw the results when their mindset changes ON THE PITCH and the result followed.
Rock on.
I probably don't know what i'm talking about.
The first 10 minutes or so were all Bath; with a penalty on 9 minutes completely against the run of play.
We were confident, and playing reasonably well, kicking to the corner when we Glos were penalised. Glos only really had their hands on the ball for long enough to box kick before we applied pressure again. Plenty of pressure, but nothing much to show for it on the score board – but that’s okay, it’s the opening salvos, we're just waiting for it to click.
Minutes 10-20 and Glos played better, but we were still on top in terms of general play – then Harris scores his try, off first phase ball, in one of their few forays into our half. IIRC his try was the first time a Gloucester hand was on the ball inside our 22. IMO – that try was made by Twelvetrees – who sat Matavesi onto his heels, causing a slight disconnect between our centres, and then popped the ball to Evans who exploits that disconnect as Josh has been robbed of his momentum. Right off the training paddock.
From there, there was a definite swing in momentum. Glos confidence went up through the roof as they’d actually earned and achieved something. We looked back on 20 minutes of playing reasonably, but complacently; and saw ourselves 0-10 down on the score board. Our heads dropped, theirs came up. We started to kick more, choosing to go for the posts rather than corner, and trying to turn Banahan in the backfield, but generally finding May or Thorley.
Glos had the momentum for half an hour, but were never truly on top in terms of the play on the pitch – but we were ever more disheartened by the score board.
At 56 minutes, Polledri bursts through on a really intelligent line (that still should have been covered), before some beautiful hands from Harris puts Banahan over. Glos have had about 35 minutes of momentum; they’ve made hard work of it, never really building pressure, but have put some points on the board. Momentum is with Glos; we’re not playing badly, we’re just flat, frustrated… imprecise.
Hooper had noted in his mid-match interview that Bath were good in the first and final thirds of the pitch, but had more work to do in the middle third. Commentary team early on has mentioned that Glos are good at scoring long distance tries, but not really in the red zone. Astute.
A couple minutes later, we do that Bath/Exeter thing that we were failing at before the lockdown, but are much better at now – catch and drive from 10-12 metres out. Initially Glos have it covered, but our forward momentum sucks in their blind-side defender; Heinz isn’t paying attention (a SH? Appealing to the ref instead of watching the game? Never!); but Spencer and Dunn know exactly what’s happened, and peel off to score down the blind side. Thanks Glos - that was perfectly gift-wrapped.
Momentum now swings our way. I don’t think we’re particularly doing anything different, but the additions of Redpath, Boyce and McNally have tightened up what we’re doing – we’re concentrating again, working harder, executing better. It’s helped that Glos are starting to tire as well; quite possibly with a degree of complacency of their own after the Banahan try. I’ve not been paying much attention to them – have they been overplaying people over the last 6 weeks?
From there, there’s no looking back for Bath – we’ve swung the momentum, and we’re keeping it. Johnny is lucky to stay on the pitch with that trailing leg, but gifts us territory to do what we do. It’s still Plan A, we’re just doing it better than we had been (and Glos hadn't been letting us in their 22 since earning some confidence).
At 17-20, we’re right back in this, and momentum has put our foot on Glos’ throat. That belief and trust in our systems, and in each other, that assurance that it’s not over until it’s over - Never In Doubt – we’re building that nicely, not finished, but the foundations are looking strong.
Watson and Underhill make some ground up the field; and we’re back to the Bath/Exeter phase play within 5m of the line – complete with lots and lots of illegal-but-never-penalised pre-binding. We know what we’re doing, we’re comfortable with it now (unlike 12 months ago); and we’ll d it as many times as we need to to get across the whitewash. We do fluff our lines a couple of times, but react quickly and assuredly enough not to matter. Eventually it’s Boyce dotting it down; and suddenly, we’ve taken the lead and are chasing a TBP.
Poor restart from Bath, leading to a scrappy exchange of box kicks until Banahan puts the ball down Rhys’ throat. Rhys looks to kick to the corner, but sees a bunch of tired Gloucester players there, gives it to Ant who takes the ball left instead. McNally, Coka and Spencer combine brilliantly for the TBP.

What is the point you are making? If it is that we need an additional quality no.10 the club are in agreement. As for Priestland missing a few kicks, he is not a robot.
Yes a team performance but Dunn was just exemplary, as was Spencer.
Thought the first half showed signs of fatigue in particular Elliott and Beno, but a lot of rugby has been played.
Thought JM made a big difference and Redpath brings that speed threat.
But Lewis Boyce, wtf! He has to be the most transformed player since lockdown. When he arrived I was not sure. Now he is consistently good.
We are back to having 3 first class front rows. Bring on Sarries
There are some people on this board who think that RP walks on water...............
He is not a robot and he is fallible............it showed however in the first 60 minutes that we could not get the ball to our strong wingers going forward and he was not getting his kicks - Plan A.
Then when we scored suddenly he could kick everything from everywhere, as compared to the three easy kicks he missed

I think the intensity of a HC S/F will be much higher than a regular GP fixture plus travel hassle to France etc would take a greater toll on their frontline squad which would be a marginal gain for us come 04/10...

I don't think the concern is whether the Club have identified the need for a world-class fly-half or whether the Club have approached any number of candidates. The concern is (or has been) why none of those candidates seems to be interested in coming to Bath.
With the events/results of the last month, however, I'd be very surprised if we remain an unattractive option. Evidence now favours the theory that Hooper is holding out for the perfect fit.
The BT commentary team mentioned a swirling wind several times, and all the missed kicks (3 from Rhys and 1 from Twelvetrees) were towards the club house end, whereas both kickers nailed the ones at the other end. Sometimes the conditions don't help the kicker and whilst some may want to use the misses as another reason to have a downer on Rhys, I really don't think form or ability were anything to do with those missed kicks.

I agree Opti, you can't account for wives but I think Hooper has both a style of 10 and a player attitude he is looking for. The fact he is prepared to wait shows conviction, I quite like that.

Quote:Bath Supporter Jack
Thing is we are not..................or probably should not be looking for a "world class" flyhalf. I would have thought we should be looking just half a notch below that level so there is no risk of them going off and playing international rugby and they would be "content" to be a very, very good squad player who can also help bring OB on.
I think we should be looking for a world-class 10. The fact is (volte face incoming) that Priestland is a very good fly-half who has played a lot of Int rugby .... in other words he is 'half a notch below' world-class. I think it's also clear that Priestland's limitations are the last shackle holding us back from being genuine contenders at the top of the GP and into the HC knock-out stages.
But, after 'world-class', the next most important attribute will be the ability to also play at 12 or 15 so as to leave a pathway clear for Bailey to graduate into the role over the course of the next 2-3 seasons.

It will be a real test playing against their first team but remember, we have have had very tight games with them before & occasionally beaten them plus they have lost one or two players including the influential Farrell for this match. Also, home advantage is not significant without supporters present. However, if we only get one point we could qualify because it’s not certain that all the other results will go in favour of our 3 rivals. I would be surprised if we were to beat a full strength Exeter in the play offs but these things do happen. A lesser match but I remember when as hot favourites we lost to Hooper’s Leeds Tykes in 2005!

Crikey, we have 3 in that 'best out of contract' XV. If true that has to be top priority for the club to get new contracts signed
OK a monumental task to come away with a win but any result is a great benchmark of where we are to seriously compete for the top next season

Are any English clubs able to make huge offers at the moment? I’d be surprised as they all say they are losing £1m a month. If the French clubs are making huge offers how can they afford it? Are their sugar daddies richer than ours. I’d assume French clubs are losing similar amounts.
Racing are losing Zebo, Vakatawa etc. so assume they have a few quid in the pot.
English clubs couldn't compete as he couldn't be a marquee and it would cost them 25% more inside the cap than it would have costed Bath.

Clubs sources of income/savings are players wages, owners pockets, TV, supporters, loans or er CVC?
Whatever has happened to them?

He mentioned his partner as well, and his Bath life.
When George Ford left, he never waited after the game, just went straight home, never spoke.
People act differently when they want to leave.
It's one thing when a professional loses some or all of their salary. But no player is ever guaranteed an international appearance and so, one assumes, mortgages/lifestyles etc are not predicated on future earnings from internationals. It would save the RFU, for example, around £0.5m per match ... money which could be spent on supporting other sectors of the game.

Or more likely the salaries of a large number of top management to sit around and discuss how they can save money. £23k a game, now £15k or whatever it is now does seem a lot - if Eddie is reading this I would be happy to get the old boots on again for free.
