FALTERING FALCONS? BATH V NEWCASTLE
Mercer: key
By PG Tips
November 17 2020
Neither side will know quite what to expect when Newcastle visit Bath in Saturdays Premiership opener. The two clubs did not meet last season and the form of the 2018 and 19 seasons offers few pointers, with both squads much changed since then. Newcastle, denied the last third of their Championship season by coronavirus, are short of match practice since March, losing the first of their two pre- season friendlies. Bath, disrupted by international calls will be below strength, but will it be fierce or faltering Falcons they face?
Newcastle won the truncated Championship convincingly, finishing strongly as the only unbeaten side in the table. They did not have it all their own way though, forced to dig deep away at Cornish Pirates and winning by only a single score at London Scottish, Bedford and Nottingham. Since resuming training they have, Dean Richards complains, suffered an unusually high number of lower leg injuries due to the long layoff. A 38-17 defeat in their friendly at Ealing, 2 weeks before facing Bath was not the ideal start to their season, even if that result was avenged 21-12 last weekend at Kingston Park. Bookmakers, sensing that Falcons may be undercooked, rate them favourites for relegation at this season’s end. Bath though have been ambushed by the newly promoted side on opening day before and cannot afford to be complacent.
Falcons packs have traditionally been stubborn and uncompromising in the mould of their DOR. Mulipola at tight head could be a tough block to shift, while Hardie, Welch and Graham ( or maybe the aptly named Basham?) will be a hard hitting back row. They will have to do without Mark Wilson though, currently injured and will miss Calum Green, departed to Saracens. Behind the scrum they are blessed with veteran experience in Young, Hodgson, Flood and Burrell, but will they have the pace and x factor needed to unlock defences at Premiership level? In Dave Walder, they certainly have one of England’s more adventurous attack coaches, so perhaps he has some cunning tricks to showcase?
Bath, having only recently built a late season revival and top 4 spot largely on forward power will rue the timing of the Autumn Nations Cup. With 8 leading lights absent with England and 1 with Wales, it is up front where those absences are most depleting. Unless England fringe players are released (assuming RFU Covid bubble protocols permit), Bath must brace themselves for making do with a largely second string pack for the next 3 weeks. If there are no injuries, and Covid 19 allowing, they can still field a potent starting 8, but strength in depth is sure to be tested and rotation may have to be limited. In the absence of Dunn and Ewels much will be expected of Walker and McNally (and hopefully a fit Henry Thomas) to drive the tight five. In the back row, the return of Zach Mercer ( reportedly a transfer target for Montpellier), described in The Chronicle as “back fit having missed the end of 2019/20” should add plenty of verve. Partnered with two of Ellis, Reid and Bayliss he should be a key figure in carry, creativity and cover.
Unless Joe Cokanasiga (unused by Eddie Jones last week) is released, England will have a large part of Bath’s threequarter strike force. Ruaridh McConnochie, in fine try scoring form last campaign, Semesa Rokodoguni and Gabe Hamer-Webb are exciting stand-ins. At least there will be stability and experience at half back where Ben Spencer and Rhys Priestland should be the pairing to direct the team. At centre it could be a pairing of directness in Josh Matavesi, against his former club, and Max Clark, though I expect a role for the elusiveness of Cameron Redpath if only from the bench. Tom de Glanville seems the natural choice at full back in the absence of Anthony Watson. Fans will be looking for signs that the short off season has been used to develop incision in attack, to take Bath’s game to the next level.
Unfortunately, Saturday’s weather looks set to frustrate that hope. It is forecast to be wet with strong, gusty winds, especially at the early kick-off time of 12.30. That might force a tighter approach, based on forward dominance and close quarter work, like the style of August to October. Tactical kicking will be key too, to control territory and exert pressure. Falcons should be prepared for that sort of game though, so Bath need to find some extra tricks to send them back to their northern nest with wings clipped and talons blunted. With so many stars absent, it is the supporting cast who must put on a show. Bath to win in a close fought and tense tussle.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Boyce, Walker, Judge, McNally, Stooke, Ellis, Reid, Mercer. Spencer, Priestland (Capt.). McConnochie, Matavesi, Clark, Rokodoguni. De Glanville.

I'd be absolutely amazed if Bailey doesn't play a part.
Sinoti left Falcons yesterday: [www.bbc.co.uk]
Not helpful for them as they have a load of players out (about 10 according to their board?).
Let's face it, whilst I'm a big fan of Newcastle and love that they are back in the league, it has to be a win at home for Bath doesn't it? Newcastle are bookies favorites for the drop and they haven't played a full match for about 8 months etc. Mind you, as we saw from the Pumas result, anything is possible...

Beno Obano is not named either which helps strengthen the front five.
PG
Strong squad though - I wonder if he'll start Ford ahead of Lawrence, or even Slade? I can see England doing another steam-roller job on Ireland - though they will be well up for the game, having been humiliated 2-3 times recently by England.
If Bath get Obano, Ewels and Cokanasiga back, that is a decent result. Newcastle's problems make it an even better opportunity to get Bailey blooded.

Newcastle have played two games against Ealing in the past couple of weeks.
Yes, Ealing won the first 38-17. Newcastle the second 21-12. The team sheets emphasise how many players Newcastle have unavailable at the moment.

very strange about sinoti. plenty of subtext if you read the bbc article high lighted above. sinoti has been with the falcons for 7 years. why would he resign just a few days before the falcon's first game of the new season? sounds like a big falling out with deano.

Good point BoA, Sinoti has conjured tries out of nothing for Newcastle at the top level, they need that type of mercurial talent to score against the higher level of defending in the Premiership.
Then I would look out for Radwan, more pace than SS and as quick as a trout up a burn (c)Bill McLaren in open play. Just need to see how he stacks up against better organised defences

Thanks, I'll do that, Bill McLaren had some fantastic animal analogies!

Surprised Beno isn't there. Hope England haven't damaged him.
Good to see Thomas starting, hopefully means he's coming into some form.
If they're not injured, Stooke and Ellis in particular will be disappointed not to make the 23.
Bench looks strong and should swing it for us if it's still close after 60m.

I don’t often post on here but that yellow card is ridiculous, rugby has gone soft, I’m all for cutting out dangerous play but for the ref to even discuss any kind of card for that tackle is ludicrous.

Yellow card was pathetic. If Ewels had tried to get lower his head would have gone straight into the other guy’s head. His arm was way down the guy’s back

Completely the wrong selection Williams over Baylis?? Or Ellis ? Wrong
Spencer (W) over Stooke.. wrong
Would have put Clark on first and left Matevesi on the bench but that’s not so bad as the first two
For all those doubters of JJ our defence is nothing without him.
I'm struggling to think of a good performance... Will Spencer maybe?
Fair play to falcons - a typically abrasive Dean Richards performance. Deserved their win (and left about 5 kicks out there!).
Quote:dannyf2
Dear dear dear me. That was horrible. We looked so soft. Sloppy set piece, not winning the gain line, going wide off first phase(?!), coughing up the ball, running in to touch. Terrible Bath.

Yes terrible best performance was Baylis when he came on. Missed tackles picked a big side and they were way to slow around the pitch. If you don’t have the ball you can’t win the game. Reid was ok mercer was good in parts. Spencer was anonymous for very long periods. big joe needs to work on his defensive positioning it was dreadful.
Looked like we have made a decision to run the ball more often but that probably would have benefited from being tried out in a warm up game or two. I do however recognise that playing extra games increases the Covid risk.
Refereeing was odd to say the least. For the first Newcastle try Micky Young clearly blocked Rhys from tackling Graham. As for the yellow card that was ridiculous. There were a lot of tackles made the same way by players from both sides that didn't get a second look.
Ultimately we missed our internationals more than I expected and looked a lot more rusty than Newcastle who had two warm up games
Our decisions were just weird, when Priestland made his break he had JM on his shoulder but through it 30m wide for Joe C. Why?

First up tackling was poor today, Newcastle gained metres with ease.
Big Joe was awful, especially in defence
Our runners were constantly isolated, support and effort well below par.
Lazy play, Falcons scored in the corner because our players were jogging across.
Turnovers - I dread to think what the stats show.
Biggest bugbear was compound errors. We went from a five metre attacking line out to a scrum in our half due to three or four errors in a row.
Pluses. Ewels , regardless of the most ridiculous card I have ever seen. Priestland was composed but had little outside him today.
’’Paint the whole world with a rainbow”
We didn't look fit and no one had any speed, unlike Messrs Radwan and Stephenson who looked like proper pacy wingers who wanted to run with the ball and knew where the line was. When we made breaks not one of our team had the pace to make it count and lacked support.
The forwards were too soft and lost the collisions and could not maul for toffee. Even our so called fortress scrum was creaking at the end.
If their kicker had kicked all his goals, they would and should have been out of site, and they deserved to be. More grunt, effort , skill where can we get any consolation from that. If any of our coaches say or even believe 'we can learn from that' , I will ......@@££%^$
Just think we have Exeter at Sandy Park next week. I can hear them oiling the score board already as it will become red hot whilst our boys wave their men and reserves past to the try line. 60 - 0 anyone? Our average loss at Exeter over the past 4/5 seasons must be around 50 against already and it will be much worse than that. Hey ho we are on a journey. What a laugh.
I read someone said you could get 40-1 on a Newcastle win. I wonder what odds will be available for either a Bath win or even a point against.

Firstly and more importantly well played Falcons you fully deserved that victory and tbh you should have won by more.
Forget complaining about Maxwell-Keys we know how bad an official he is so we needed to adapt.
Once again our basic skills - awful Game plan - non existent. Skills under pressure/defence - awful.
We answered in that 80 minutes why we are nowhere near to challenging for any titles. That performance is the worst I have seen in many years, it appears we have gone backwards we had enough dominance to win but there was no heart, desire or passion and it was summed up by the pathetic attempt by TDG to tackle Stephenson for their winning try.
I am going to stop there because I feel the negativity taking over and this is only the first game.
That performance took embarrassing to a new level.
Schooled by Newcastle yet again.
Awful.

Sounds like Boris has done us all a favour by not allowing us to go to the games this season.
Could it be that Bath were underprepared for the start of the season? Not convinced that a Bath player wouldn't have the desire.
Just a month ago Tigers couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. Already after 19 minutes gone at Welford Road Tigers scored 3 tries against Glos.
Whilst I appreciate this is one game but with only a month off what the hell is going on for a side to come out and put that kind of performance in against a team decimated by injury, not having played for 8 months and odds on for relegation??
Hooper states he is happy with the quality of his squad only time will tell. They have a chance to turn it round next week at Chiefs.
That tactical change was compounded by multiple players having poor performances. I can't understand why Roko came on for TDG, when big Joe seemed a much greater liability. Tdg's biggest issue seemed to be receiving hospital passes from half the team. Redpath needs to learn where the touchline is.
Finally, as discussed, some strange decisions by the ref, firstly for their first try, and then the yellow for Ewells.
Just a frustrating day all round other than the first 10mins.

I find that game perplexing, i dont understand how our defence could have become so terrible in a month.
Problem is that with the internationals that team will be the one that features in a lot of games.
Review the thread before the match started a common theme was how strong this side looked going into our opening game!

We were as terrible as we were for 60 minutes against Gloucester, 40 against Saracens and 80 against Exeter.
Not for the first time we were schooled all over the field by Newcastle at home.
Trained to play like robots. So utterly one dimensional.
There was a lot of inaccurate play in forwards and backs.
The backs attack was more ambitious than last season it was occasional incision, rather than depth that troubled the defence. That said, the tries were lovely - fluent and well taken.
The game was lost in a lack of control and allowing Falcons to dictate the territory and intensity.

We look sharp and organised, impressive start for me...
Really?
Yes, some poor decisions , passes, too many penalties! Are Bath going to throw this game away ?
7-12
My original post was made after c 20mins and Bath we going well but stone me after Joe C missed his tackle and Falcons scored we went right downhill. They were hungrier, knocked us out of our stride and our own errors compounded the problem. As said above the yellow for Ewels was ridiculous and I was baffled by other CM-K decisions during the match. A very disappointing start to our season

Still, our exits (from the 22) were appalling. Made it easy for Newcastle to play the territory and they obliged.
Good that we got two tries from far out but not many teams can sustain a game plan on that basis and we are not one of those teams.
JC getting pelters, but in truth, there was not a single starter that would have got better than a 6/10. Roko injected some enthusiasm, but it all seemed so flat.
Optimistic was spot on re the front row. Missed the quality ball created by Beno, Dunner and Will.

Check my comment earlier in the thread re '97!
As a club, we have a lot of previous when it comes to underestimatimg unfancied opposition. And even more previous when it comes to starting a season slowly.
Add in the loss of a lot of our more experienced players to England and the starting of greenhorns and injury returnees and you have a recipe for disappointment if things don't go our way. And they didn't because Falcons played excellent rugby and we did not find an answer to the questions they asked of us.
We can all pick out players who were individually poor but this was a woeful team performance - which is an on-field leadership issue. We had the same problem last year and we haven't fixed it yet. Until we do, we won't really challenge.
I had a bad feeling about this one all along.
... IMHO, of course.

In relation to Bath, a quote from Jonny May yesterday:
"Opportunities like that these days are less and less, because defences are better and better, and breakdowns are tougher and tougher," May told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra. "The only real chance to get ball in a bit of space is at a turnover. We have a flip-the-switch drill in training that has prepared me to take an opportunity like that. It just bounced up for me nicely, but that's rugby."
We pointed out on this board a while ago that with Flouw off Bath have no turnover specialist in this current periods where turnovers are king. Its no coincidence that the likes of Wasps (Willis), Bristol (Luatua, Thomas), Sale (Currys, Ross) and Exe (Simmons, Cowan Dickie etc) are flying high.
Yesterday it was even pointed out in commentary that Bath were committing nobody to rucks. Dunn was also a big miss in that regard, his chop tackles around the ankle opening them up for the turnover was also missed yesterday IMO.
If Bath are going to compete this season they need to get one of their many back rows focussed on turnovers in the way that Diamond has done with Sale. Is that player Reid, if not then Bayliss?
Finally, it seems like Bath can't multitask. Two seasons ago not great defence or possession. Then last season great defence and the attack non existent. Then yesterday some interesting intent (although not execution) in attack but the basic tackling really poor again. Can we not have both please?
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
The lack of anything is really worrying. We had a strong squad out there yesterday yes we had a handful of players missing but not half as many as the Falcons.
So whilst I am happy to listen to reasoned debate we must not make excuses about players missing. Neither should we look to make scapegoats just remember Cameron Redpath and TDG have only played a handful of senior games and yet Hoops lists them ahead of a recognised 10 in Bailey as options at fly half absolute madness.
I put myself through watching parts of that debacle again and I cannot for the life of me understand why players Such as RP were making such poor rugby decisons such as the break he made prior to JCs try he had RMC on his shoulder for a run in but chose a 20m loop pass which almost killed the move. Honestly if you can bring yourselves and its a big IF to watch the game again it is worse than the first time. As I said as poor a performance I have seen for many years from any team.
you just knew it was going to happen. bath believed all the media hype about its late run last season and came out thinking this was going to be a walk in the park. after the early try our effort went from 60% down to 30% and that's when they knew they had a chance. to say their first try was lucky is an understatement but once again bath were caught sleeping close to their own goal line, a bit like the umaga try a month or so back or that last minute ballsup at sale (?) a couple of seasons ago when they scored from a 5 metre tap in the last minute while the bath defence was looking the other way and max clark was playing with his hair.
falcons were excellent value. ball in hand they were much slicker than bath, looked more dangerous and gary graham had more snarl in him than the whole of the bath team put together.
with bath it's the same old problems- emotional instability, lack of resources in the centres and an inability to perform skills under pressure. when are we going to hire a skills coach? redpath looked lost at 13 and doesnt have the speed to play there. why is there no recognised back up for joseph? hooper knew he'd be away half the season.
every one has a bad day at the office but mcnally seemed incapable of rousing his troops. like a previous poster i am very disappointed in jack walker. he looks overweight and has lost his zip. batty is surely a better option. big joe looks to have lost all confidence after his injury and frankly doesnt deserve to be in the team. he should go and talk to katie warrinder.
next week is going to be grim. all we need is for rhys to pick up an ACL and the fans' love affair with 'hoops' will be well and truly over.
Get fed up when people trying to defend the indefensible. It was an appalling , pathetic performance- hopefully they are a bit embarrassed.
Credit to newcastle for taking advantage and looking a decent team second half.
I often think when there has been a woeful performance its good to give the same group a chance for redemption. I fear that approach may lead to a horrible defeat next week. If we can get beno and a few others into the team we probably need to. Lcd being called up in place of dunn would help a little from a selfish perspective. Also williams for stuart!
Personnel only a small part of the issue, yesterday everything was wrong!
Running into touch
Butchering glaring try scoring chances
Then they really did deliver....
I have been privileged to speak with Deano in the past and he is someone I totally respect, he stated then he has always believed that Bath FC have a soft element to the team post the glory days. - I have heard Ben Kay and Graham Rowntree make similar comments about us as well, something Tigers in particular thought.
Deano also mentioned that it is about the heart and soul of a club not a name on the shirt or a team sheet. He went on to say you have to bring the right type of player to a club someone who will buy into the club ethos and work hard not and not about their own ego. He also made comments that you cannot buy success you have to earn it and thet also comes out in his comments.
Hard to argue with his summing up of the game.

Ali, how many Newcastle players were on international duty yesterday? Are you saying that its the players not buying into the club. I don't see that.
I think both the coaches and players over estimated our capabilities. Total mess but stick our front row back in there its a different story. Our issue is what we do during internationals.
if we play like that with Stuart, Dunn, Obano, Underhill, Faletau, JJ, and Watson in the side fair comment.
We do however, need a turnover specialist and badly miss Francois Louw.

That has frequently been cited as a reason why we do not sign any available fly half.
It is also why Hooper was groomed to be DOR - rather than another expensive import who would tear up the good with the bad in making changes. Bath have chosen to "build" a squad and a culture. It sure went wrong yesterday - but the implication that Bath do not have heart and soul is- IMHO- off the mark.
PG
We have been told by Hoops that he has built a squad to cope with International and Injury absences well if yesterday is anything to go by God Help Us.
PG I am with you honestly, what I quoted is the thoughts some years ago of Deano and what I have heard and read from other respected Players and coaches. Certainly Ben Kay has made that view known on BT Sport in relation to our luxurious setting and facilities.

Exeter were missing francis , gray, skinner, hill, vermeulen, slade, nowell, hogg etc.....thrashed quins despite not playing great.
There is always an excuse, its a total cop out. we use them too often (fans , not players/coaches, at least in their interviews tbf). the whole point is that it is a squad game these days. If the squad isnt up to it we have a big problem! I think boyce, schoeman, walker, batty, thomas, judge are perfectly good back ups on paper, you cant have 9 top quality options.
Apologies for tone, just still annoyed by that debacle yest....

Tone is fine CB, I was reacting to the slight that the club had the 'wrong sort of player' I don't think thats true we have a similar squad format to Newcastle after all.
I do think we have a weak bottom half of the squad though, how often did we see games where we faded in the second half last season when the front row got subbed and we hung on for a win?

I hope Hooper and his cohorts take various individuals severely to task, and spell it out to them, improve or they will be getting very little game time.
As others have already mentioned, I really don't see what others find as good in Mr Walker. He is not physical or strong enough by half or fit enough. Look at McGuigan who was aggressive and made a huge contribution wherever he was needed. Other hookers at other Prem clubs, contribute hugely all over the field, but not JW.
Sadly, the same has to be said about Henry Thomas who looked out of his depth and that time and the game has moved on since he last played regularly. Similarly, I thought Will Spencer was equally as bad and never punched his weight or dominated the lineout.
Reid and Bayliss , when he came on, along with Rory MacConaghie and Zach(if we let him go over Faletau we are stark raving mad), tried manfully to turn the tide, Also, the introduction of Roko was far too late. Then TDG got hooked over the appalling Joe C. Bizarre.
Have we got a speedster amongst our other backs, as everyone yesterday looked pedestrian compared to the Newcastle backs? What is wrong with Hamer-Webb and when are we likely to see him again?
So many questions and no obvious answers which is hugely dissappointibg after the time period leading up to this game. Did we have Newcastle watched, did we have a plan to match their physicality, did we have an idea how to get at Michael Young who is not the best under pressure?
I am absolutely dreading next weekend, and then we have to pick ourselves up from the depths again. If Priestland gets hurt, we are in the mire.

It is worth remembering that top class training and recovery facilities are a recruiting tool- outside the salary cap- that could be the difference between signing and non-signing, retention and departure for pastures new.
The idea that this is somehow "pampering" is a typical piece of Leicester propaganda (we're proper hard we are), outdated and risible.

Doesn't matter if it's plan A, B, or Z, just execute it properly. Running straight into touch over, and over, and over again, coughing possession constantly, panicking in the red zone, back to us constantly losing the ball at 5 metre lineout drives, the list goes on.

Saved the game on catchup for after my Sunday lunch. Bad call as it’s given me indigestion. We definitely underestimated Falcons and their preparation and aggression was the difference. Thought Cameron looked out of his depth, Big Joe’s ball retention and defence was attrocious, and the whole team looked a yard off the required pace for prem rugby.

I thought Bath looked like they were trotting out for a pre-season friendly and that the result was secondary. I don't want to criticise CR too much, because he showed some invention and a bit of ability.
I also think Ewels actually looked fired up and a good leader. I think if he'd have stayed on the field we might have clawed the deficit back.

The most worrying thing, having supported Bath for more years than I care to remember is that I don't really care too much about the result. Is this the result of not being able to see them live, or have I just got out of a habit and found other things to do on a Saturday afternoon?
I think part of it is modern training methods, the thought that coaches are spending their lives going through stats on a laptop rather than letting players express their natural talents, with the proliferation of box kicking in many games ruining it as a spectacle - perhaps you should be able to call a mark anywhere inside your own half?
We also must remember Cameron Redpath and Tom D G are literally just starting out on their professional journeys and it is totally unfair to put any blame on them - If anything Hoops and his coaching team need to stand up and take the flack - It is great to pin hope on players but at their age we are looking years down the line and it is absolutely wrong to expect them to immediately perform and change a malaise which has blighted our club since the turn of the professional era.
The 10 position is purely the management's responsibility to have placed the club in it's current position in relation to a 10 - like I have stated this is not a situation which has crept up on us and the management decided no matter what the purported circumstances to let our back up International 10 leave without replacement - matter of fact.
I have no doubt the squad will go down to Chiefs and give a much better performance - Can't be worse - I too thought Charlie Ewels and Roko came on and showed the sheer anger they must have been feeling watching such a Pathetic amateur display by players some of who are seasoned Internationals. The question once again is why did it take so long to make changes??
Looking at the other games in the Premiership bar - Quins, I thought all the other sides were reasonably evenly matched - Bristol for instance - bar CP had all their star names missing and pushed a neigh on full strength Wasps side and really should have closed it out, Tigers showed like they have re-discovered their form and to be honest I think based on Saturdays performance we were without doubt the worst performing side in the Premiership and were damn lucky to come away with a point - we certainly didn't deserve it.

Maybe I am going over the top - but we have been here so often, we have been told by our DoR that the squad IS good enough so that is not the issue, our DoR states the squad has trained exceptionally well and were prepared for this match - so what other explanation is there for that performance??
It is not the matter of losing - it is the lack of accuracy, passion, fitness everything - Falcons grew stronger and stronger as they could see we were not in for the fight on our own turf - crowd or no crowd - it was our own pitch and it was only when Ewels and Roko took the pitch that I saw any passion whatsoever - in fact Charlie looked like he was going to explode at the end.
So I don't know if I going over the top - but there must be some explanation as to why the entire team acted in this manner against (No disrespect meant) a Falcons team which probably was weaker than some of their Championship teams last year.

Falcons fan in peace- Ewells actually smashed out several of Adam Radwan's teeth in that little coming together- so perhaps the yellow was warranted...
I've looked at the game since, we could easily have won. Ewells card was an absolute joke, very close to a red remember and Newcastle were offside repeatedly.
We do have serious problems but are they terminal, I'm not sure. Our problem is we have young players in the backs who got it wrong. Is that a surprise, at least we have some young talent on the field.
The front row need sorting, could we have a better coach to sort that than Hatley? I'll support you if 6 games in we are still performing at the same level but it was one game after a big improvement last season, (6 weeks ago!).
Hooper needs to sort this but after last season the club won't bin him. Exeter stuck with Baxter and he has done OK. Hooper is there because he is Bath centric and building a Bath orientated club. That's what you want isn't it?
The problem is England players. We are not Exeter yet where the B squad is close behind the A squad we just need to close the gap.
If you have got mates at the club 'disrespecting' and throwing out negatives all the time ask yourself should they be doing that are they part of the problem? It needs sorting but I do think you are taking it just a bit too hard.

Doesn't matter if it was violent or not sw.
The directives are that the defender is responsible and head to head contact is a red. This was mitigated down as Radwan was cutting in.
There's a clear video of said incident floating around and it is 100% a head collision. There's a lot of ifs and buts but the facts are it was head to head.
That Radwan is now missing more a few teeth should be testament that this a dangerous tackle and at least worthy of a yellow.
If people still think this a disgrace/never a yellow etc....they need to check the directives, the video and see the after effect. I think they may change their mind.
I'll be 100% honest, I didn't think it was a yellow with the angles shown on the TV at the time. I think it was the touch judge that called it and it was a good spot.

Of course I realise that PF, my point is the fact he lost teeth is actually irrelevant, (thats not diminishing his injury in any way), that can happen by accident.
My point is those tackles were happening everywhere, if the game wan't rid the examine ALL upright tackles and have the same level of scrutiny.
it was the injury that alerted the officials not the tackle.

I wonder if that tackle had been in a crowded midfield whether it would have been reviewed? Arguably it should have been, but so too should all headhunter tackles.
PG
Quote:P G Tips
Agreed PF and Opti, but Shipwrecked makes the point that those tackles were happening everywhere - they are prevalent in the pick and drive periods when one set of forwards besieges the other team's line. Zach Mercer alone took several hits to head and neck unremarked.

That exactly my point PG, just explained more clearly by yourself.

I know refs have a hard time ( I’ve tried it) but it’s the lack of consistency that gets me. Several head contacts by both sides were ignored in the Newcastle game. It was only the obvious outcome that caused Ewells one to be looked at . If the player gets back up with a minor unnoticed concession the outcome is “invisible” and the tackle frequently let go but the long term outcome could be far worse.
Before you ask I don’t know what the answer is but we do need to be less “outcome driven”

This is a very good point, normally I'd be spitting nails for days after such a humiliating defeat but this time I'm just a little disappointed. Obviously would prefer Bath to win games, but as I can't watch any of the games until 2021/22 (hopefully) I'm not that bothered what happens this season (aside from relegation clearly). When you aren't permitted to do something for so long it's quite easy to find other things to entertain yourself.
- no crowds
- international absences for the club teams
- boring international games (without much meaning other than ££)
- general way that the professional male game has gone.
On the plus side I really enjoyed the England womens game vs France, great comeback by them and some entertaining play as well.

I genuinely don't understand this shrug of the shoulders attitude by supporters. Also, which B team are you talking about, ours or Falcons? We put out a very strong side, all teams are missing players.

The most worrying thing, having supported Bath for more years than I care to remember is that I don't really care too much about the result. Is this the result of not being able to see them live, or have I just got out of a habit and found other things to do on a Saturday afternoon?
This is definitely the case. Fan support has seriously eroded in recent years, and it's no wonder when the rugby has been so poor for years and no trophies of any kind in over a decade.
It's sad how many times "worst performance I can remember in a long while" keeps getting mentioned on here in recent seasons, it feels like every few weeks.

Dreadful but certainly not terminal. This coaching team is here to stay to build up exactly the sort of the club identity you want. Get used to it and get behind the team!

JC had a shocker - but I think the reviews of Roko are mainly based on the fact that he made a decent tackle very soon after he came on. When he had the ball with the opportunity to run, he looked as though his pace has declined even further. Still a fantastic player, but at 33 it's hard to see him recapturing the full magic. JC on the other hand had played about 60 minutes (?) of rugby in 12 months. Perhaps they had decided that what he needed most was 80 minutes - hopefully he's knocked some rust off.
Real pace is class in any sport!

This is rugby, a full blooded physical game where two sides go at each other for 80 exhausting minutes, and where winning fast, brutal collisions is fundamental. To call the Ewels challenge yellow sets you on a very slippery slope that can only end up with touch rugby - as already alluded to, there will have been plenty of worse or similar incidents during the game. It's impossible to train a player to make a split second decision not to stop an opponent because there is a slight chance of head contact.
I wouldn't be too harsh on your performance either. There's loads of mitigating factors like being without key men for internationals, only having a short break after a gruelling run in to last season and that this was Falcons first game for a long, long time. They must have been frothing for it and keen to start their return with a bang. They are a good side with a good coaching set up who finished 4th only a couple of years ago.
I can see you finishing in the top four quite easily. Good luck for the season.

My problem with the yellow card is one of fairness we either penalise all of those tackles or none. Watched the England game after and similar tackles went un penalised because no one stayed down or they weren’t seen or they weren’t deemed worthy of a stoppage..
Head contact is (almost) always looked at now though. TMOs are looking at it and it gets reviewed after the game.
Ewels was far too upright as he went in for that tackle. The intention is to lower the tackle height. Initial contact was not with head, but as a result of technique, contact with the head occurred. If he didn't make contact with the head then it's not a penalty, but he did, so it's a yellow card every day of the week under the current interpretations (which have been in place for, what, like 2 years now?)
Is that true. It's not so long ago that capacity at the Rec was c. 8,000. It's now nearer 12,000 and generally sold out, and at some eye-watering prices too.
I agree with your 'B' team comment. There is no such thing as a full-strength team any more, and the strength of each club is almost entirely contingent on the strength of their best 30 players, not their best 15.

Sure Hasta, but why only review that clash there were loads of instances where upright tackles led to bumped heads. This is the point.

This is not correct! We last won silverware in 2008 which is as you say is more than a decade ago. The attendance figures on the premiership site in that year was 115,057. The season 2018/19 we registered 201,977 that is not serious erosion.
Of course last season was a disaster for all and up to lockdown we registered 99,747 and came 4th in the attendance stakes.
There were dips in 2011/12 (-518), 2012/13 (-3,183), 2015/16 (-14,570) and 2018/19 (-1,822) but no “serious erosion”.

So you have two players jumping for a ball and they clash heads.............who gets the obvious and appropriate yellow card................both has to be the answer!
If it's a fair contest for the ball then it's no penalty. The difference here is it would be caused by the tackle technique of the tackler.
Intent is not part of the consideration. If there was an 'accidental' clash of heads, it's deemed to be caused by tackle technique that you weren't in control of. Again, this is very much a deliberate decision to encourage a lower tackle height.
If there are other accidental clashes of heads in tackles, I'm surprised they aren't looked at.

I do struggle with why, given we've had how many seasons now where the emphasis was on avoiding high tackles, people still go in high. All that needed was Ewells to smash Radwan into touch with a waist high tackle, or even his shoulder at chest/sternum height. I appreciate it is difficult for players in the heat of the moment, but surely by now they should know to go lower?
That's particularly bad if Radwan has had his teeth knocked out....

THe official thought he'd spotted a red card offence, the debate then was about whether it was red or just yellow. It was almost as if the option for it to be accidental wasn't even up for consideration it wasnt on the table. Psychology I guess.
They could probably review the whole match and find 5 more, but they didnt.

I thought the Ewells card was absurd on first watch, but Ben Kay (I know, I know..) says here that refs have been told to watch for head contact and if no attempt to bend at waist, tackler is at risk of a card:

Thing is that Ewells starts to bend at the waist but Radwan ducks as well at the same time.
Was he wearing a mouthguard its unusual to loose teeth wearing one?

The difficulty is that so many tackles are made within a very confined space. For Ewels to make a low tackle on, say, Harry Randall, he would have to start his descent from at least 6 feet away.
Quote:It was almost as if the option for it to be accidental wasn't even up for consideration it wasnt on the table. Psychology I guess.
As I think you can see from the framework above - no there is no option for it to be accidental. If it's accidental it's still the tackler's fault.
Ewels didn't bend. He slightly leant forwards. Contact chest-to-chest first, change of direction just before tackle and not massively dangerous, but clearly a card.

But isn't that supposed to be part of the professional rugby player's skillset nowadays? Underhill and Dunn are masters of the 'chop' tackle. Now, I agree that here a chop tackle might have resulted in an offload to score, which is probably why Ewels went high in the first place - but he must know in doing so there is a risk.
And, at the risk of coming across as contrary, it wasn't against Randall, but a near 6ft winger.
Edit: I do beg your pardon, I've given Charlie an extra 'L' (now changed!)

Yes he was wearing one- it is visible in pics from earlier in the game. From the pic he posted later, it looks like he lost maybe three teeth?
Most important thing- which no one here is saying- is that he was up and about and seemingly otherwise unaffected after the incident.

He was subbed though presumably for an HIA.

Also I would of expected some blood from Ewels if he had smashed three teeth out with his head... He looked totally unscathed. But didn't argue or seem surprised when sent off, so assume he felt it was a correct decision.
I'm not saying it didn't happen but it looked like tackles you see every RL game .
All very strange ...

From the footage I saw the , there was no contact head to face from Ewels ? Close, yes but Radwan's head did not go back (as you'd expect with a clash of heads) or was he holding his face afterwards and I saw no blood which you'd expect after loosing teeth ?? Also he was definitely playing soon after, not sure he even went off for a HIA , if he did I'd have thought it was for hitting the ground with Ewels.

Not really strange, it was a head on head. Radwan did go off for a HIA and is currently going through the protocol.

I get what people are saying, this happens a lot. Because it's out wide in space, it's been picked up. Doesn't make it ok. I think we'll see more and more of this being picked up.
The posters saying this is a mans game etc etc....rubbish. Not so long ago, rucking was seen as ok. The game moves on and player safety is paramount imo. Getting hit in the head can end a career, it's not manly to accept it.
Anyway, good luck for season boys. looking forward to the return game.
And fwiw I thought the Ewels decision correct - duty of care. Though I tend to be a hanging judge.

Ironically concussions have gone up since handling was allowed in the ruck!

Personally I’d settle for a transient influence that wins the PL.
Hooper does appear to be building a continuing legacy, but not one of success. He’s had more than long enough to put a stop to abject performances, which sounds like what he delivered against Falcons.

Struggling to see the relevance of Connacht's points total, four years after Lam left.
What is relevant is that Bristol have surpassed Bath, in a remarkably short time, and won silverware within two seasons of being in the Premiership. I don't care about this flimsy "lasting legacy' thing, just turn us into a good side that players love to run out for, that'll sort the legacy out.
Post lockdown we were showing positive signs of progression - a style and identity of how the coaches wanted us to play and on the whole it was effective until we met a side much more proficient, accurate and clinical at that style of play. That was palatable, Chiefs are way down the line from where we are.
One month on and personally I did not recognise that teams style of play - it was a complete opposite from how we had played post lockdown.
My concern is that the squad which took the pitch on Saturday did not just decide to abandon the style which had been reasonably successful only a month before and adopt whatever game plan that was because I could not personally identify what we were trying to achieve? There just appeared to be a malaise about the team and that is what has got me so upset and we did not pay Newcastle the respect they deserved and we got what we deserved.
What is also getting me upset is talk that we lost because we were missing our Internationals. As I mentioned previously Newcastle were missing more players than we were - no perhaps not expensive house hold names but equally important to their team - it is about proportionality not every team has a "Sugar Daddy" pumping millions into their team. You could argue what good has it done us? Many of that team that took the side on Saturday would be part of our first team squad on a normal matchday - so please can we stop hiding behind smoke screens and some of those international players missing haven't exactly set our world alight in a BBW shirt recently.
Like I have said - serious teams - teams capable of winning trophies even when playing bad do not play as bad as we did on Saturday - Yes things may go against you but you can generally see they are still playing to a trusted system, we did not only play badly but we changed the system and it was clear that the team didn't know what was going on - hence why people were making breaks and no - one was within 10 metres of them, throwing big loopy passes etc resulting a turnover/penalty sound familiar?
I imagine some interesting training sessions this week - but let us not forget give or take one or two players the squad will be the same taking the field against the Chiefs on Saturday - same abstractions as Saturday - DoR and Coaches have some serious thinking to do.

Surprised at that, its obvious Lam has NOT left a legacy of success. Exactly your criticism of Bath. A legacy is a group of players that grow up with belief in success as at Sarries and Exeter. It is rooted in the youth of the club.
Isn't that exactly what is happening now at Bath, young local EQ qualified players coming through? TdG, GHW, Bailey, Ogomoh, Reid, Atkins etc.

Fully agree, you cannot say the lack of internationals contributed to the woeful performance and, surely, their replacements should have grabbed their chance to shine with both hands, if they had the ability. And that is the crux of the problem. Example is Walker, and not just him. He has had plenty of time now and games to know what he has to do and at what level, but falls woefully short. I am not the greatest Batty fan, but he , Stooke, Williams, Judge, Roko, Matevesi, Clark, Ruirid, Ellis, Mercer and probably Bayliss have to start against Exeter to keep the score to an acceptable level. Otherwise, it will be very embarressing and demoralising for the team and us fans.

Of course but thats not the point BO, that's where the legacy gets perpetuated c.f. Sarries and Exeter. Lam didn't do that at Connaught. Remember he left over money before he could build that. The difference between Lam, Baxter and Hooper is that the later 2 are rooted in the club. Irrespective of Hooper's rugby merit as a DOR you must see the clubs intention surely.

What sort of legacy do you think losing to the newly promoted side, at home, will leave? That was the most likely 5 point win teams will have this season, and we were lucky to get 1 point from it. How many failed seasons can we have after all these years, when you might think that something isn't right? When other teams are winning trophies every year and we're nowhere near?

I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but is it fair to say you think Bath are rubbish?

It's a squad game, every club loses players, you can't put all your eggs in one basket. Newcastle didn't need star players to win well at the weekend.
You know, maybe if we'd played Obano, Dunn and Stuart we might have won against Newcastle, but it would have still been a collective underperformance, and as usual, underperformance is the club's middle name.

I would say the most significant difference between Lam, Baxter and Hooper is the former 2 are proven winners and continue build on their success. Has Hooper actually won anything in his rugby career? I don't think so and the "progress" to date doesn't suggest that will change.
I don't doubt Hooper is rooted in the club, but that's not enough to succeed.
On the flip side McCall at Saracens - No affiliation with Sarries and has built a real legacy and with mega bucks from Wray but his players want to stay with him. He also did the same at Ulster.
Luatua made reference to coming to Bristol purely because of Pat Lam - he clearly has a draw to be able to bring a current (at the time) All Black from Auckland to join a Championship side. Personally I really like Lam, I like the way he talks and his vision and would give anything to have him at Bath. I remember July 2019 my wife and I bumped into the Bristol squad having a coffee at Cribbs Causeway and I had a chat with Jordan Crane - He stated Lam was so empowering and players really respect him and it showed the togetherness of the squad even my wife who has no interest in rugby really commented that they seemed to really enjoy each others company.
I am a fan of Hoops as a player and a person - whether he is the messiah we all need well only time will tell, he clearly has a lot to learn. Personally II am not sure he has handled certain situations as well as they could have been handles but you have to look forward and learn. It is not a given because you have an affiliation to a club that means you will make it and after all Hoops played for us - One could argue he has more of an affiliation with Chiefs or Sarries - but I agree he is here to stay unless of course we end up in a relegation scrap in which case who knows.

Give us your blueprint for success. From where we stand now - not from 3, 5 or 10 years ago. We are where we are.
I don't often single out individuals (apart from the Freddie Burns Show, supported by Bath Rugby, disaster), but I think that Hooper's head down low-ambition template stifles ability and drains enjoyment, rendering Dempsey's input as marginal, and Bruce Craig meddled in the past much to the annoyance of players (and coaches), not sure if that's still the case.

Read the rest of the quote you highlighted please, "The pack that gave us success last season haven't even played yet and won't do for a while."
You last paragraph actually agrees with me!
So with three international players in the front row we can beat Newcastle at home, without them, we barely scrape a losing bosing point. Got it.
What a legacy!
All I’m saying is stand back and consider whats been said. On the basis of one game where we played a B team up front several of you are condemning the club stating we are complete and utter failures at various levels.
ONE game. Seriously that isn’t rational!
Its simply proof that our squad lack depth.
PS That not right anyway only McNally and Ewels remained on Saturday from our semifinal team last season. Ewels only played 20 minutes as well, (should have been 30 but he got carded for some reason!)

And it's not one game, Gloucester for 60 minutes, Saracens for 40, Exeter for 80, and now Newcastle for 80.
Our first choice team got beaten up by the Saracens D team in a game that meant nothing to them, everything to us. It's not one game. If we had continued our early post-lockdown form all the way into the semi final against Exeter, then fair enough, but we didn't, we fell apart in the last three games, when the pressure was on.

I probably don't know what i'm talking about.

I think that Hooper's head down low-ambition template stifles ability and drains enjoyment, rendering Dempsey's input as marginal, and Bruce Craig meddled in the past much to the annoyance of players (and coaches), not sure if that's still the case.
That is pretty much, word for word, the precise criticism of the Club that Freddie Burns made.

Thats really funny, also ironic!

I draw the line at being an armchair critic,.
With respect BO - you don't. Your posts on this thread are a good example of an armchair critic in action.

I thought one of saturday's problems was that we were too ambitious without "earning the right"?
The moves for the tries were fine, and running as an exit strategy worked on occasion but several - you included BO - have condemned on here the backline moves that failed or stuttered through poor execution. They may have been poor but surely more "ambitious" than last season- even the end when we were mostly winning.

Point missed.
Make it clearer then. Doesn’t the very fact of posting here make us all ‘armchair’ critics - especially those, like you and me, who use pseudonyms?
It isnt great is it, first game of season when you should be putting a marker down that you mean business after a good restart campaign.
Everyone has off days but doesn't sit wonderfully with me.
I think he is a huge talent and needs careful management physically and probably mentally.
I do worry about over protecting players and not demanding enough of them on the flipside though.
They keep emphasising he hasnt played for bath for 16 mths but he was out of rugby games for c11 months. He has been fit for nearly 3 months in full training for bath and england (tho think that was only 4th game and 2nd start). Is it acceptable for a winger to look completely cooked after 50 mins and like he has never played rugby before from minute 1?
I love big joe and would give him all the love and support he needs. Also totally appreciate every player needs handling differently. I just worry whether we dont demand enough. Having watched 'the edge' cricket docu aware of the fall out of demanding too much tho!
I hope he's reading this board.

Posters who claim lack of effort cannot possibly know what goes on in a player's mind and often those who make the claim do so when it is clear that the winning team had more strength, skill, cohesion or even luck.
Those who get most stick for it are those who resort to the complaint every time they are frustrated with a performance - without justifying their claim. They get stick rightly IMHO.

It isn't great Charlie, but it's one thing when the captain or coach refers to the opposition wanting it more, quite another for fans to assume it.

Agreed. Saturday seems a rare legitimate gripe backed up by the words of the captain.
Thought hoops did well tbh just to say it was totally unacceptable rather than attempt to sugar coat it.

I don't think that Joe C has ever been a great footballer though has he? Frighteningly good going forward when he is at his best and good at the offload but his turning, tackling and general skillset hasn't ever been seen as a strength from what I understand. The stereotypical pros and cons of a very large man on the wing basically.
Agreed tho i have always thought he has decent hands and a decent rugby brain. when he first arrived our main tactic was 'give it to joe' and it worked quite well. I think he is one of those blokes who probably needs reminding now and again that he is very big, very quick and very powerful and if he backs himself he is going to cause defenders serious problems.
Looks v tentative at the moment which , whilst understandable, he has been back in full training and playing some matches for 2-3 mths now.

Pat Lam is a transient influence, he has left no legacy at all at Connaught. Look at Ulster, Leinster and Munster currently they have twice the points of Lam's ex club.
There was no "legacy" at Connaught - that is correct. His replacement, Kieran Kane, arrived later than planned, from outside the club, so there the managment deliberately looked to change things. He also left after one year so there was added disruption. The new coach, Andy Friend, is improving things there.
However, there was never going to be a period of Connaught domination as the other provinces are a higher priority for the IRFU and get preferential funding and selection of players. So not entirely sure you can blame Pat Lam for Connaught not dominating Irish rugby.
I'll let you get back to your own issues now...

The main issue with "leaving a legacy" was Lam also taking his assistant head coach (McPhillips), captain (Muldoon) and I think some strength & conditioning staff. That isn't how you leave a legacy. I guess you can argue it either way - if Connacht wanted some continuity, they would have worked harder (paid more) to keep those staff.
One of my theories on "culture", primarily at Bristol, is that we do still have a local or an ex-player (or both) driving things - Mark Tainton. He obviously took over for a few months when Robinson was asked to leave, but he's still there in his COO capacity. Chris Booy is still CEO. And the relationships they all enjoy with Lansdown "appear" to be very healthy - as does Lam. My theory is that this goes a long way to driving the culture - the staff (players) know that all parties are working to a common goal. I would guess 80% of people here who have worked for corporates, know how precarious that is - it's often obvious when one level of management is butting up against another (or not).
Exeter "appear" to have a very healthy relationship between Baxter and Tony Rowe. Saracens "appeared" to have a very healthy relationship between McCall and Wray. I know it won't be hard to find a club that is an exception to a rule. Leicester are a good example where those relationships don't "appear" to be working.
This is a very long-winded way of saying: could the fact that the relationship between Bath's head coach/director of rugby and Tarquin/Bruce Craig doesn't "appear" to work, be something that adversely affects "culture"? Just a theory, and obviously by an outsider, but...

What indication is there at all that Hooper and Tarquin/Bruce don't have a good
relationship?
Makes a change from the usual gripe on this board that exactly the opposite is true?
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
In fairness, there haven't been stories about Bath's top level management for some time. Just theorising about this mythical "culture" thing that is often quoted. Bristol, as one example, do go out of their way to push that to front and centre.
I think the only indications of any disagreement between owner, CEO & DOR have come from speculation on this board!

In our case I am not so sure - Todd Blackadder & Tabai Matson certainly from what I was told did not enjoy a good working relationship with Craig/McDonald, particularly Matson who was rumoured could not and would not put up with the interference. Todd Blackadder was more of a diplomat but even his patience was ground down - but Hoops is their man - he has been somewhat groomed by McDonald into his position - even to the point of rushing his appointment a year early despite not even having the requisite training badges.
So I believe Hoops does have the backing at the moment of Craig/McDonald - but any more performances such as Saturday he may well have to borrow the Metal Backplate that Todd Blackadder wore to protect himself from the Ides of March and Stabs to the back.
