FIND A WAY OUT: WORCESTER V BATH
Stooke: physical
By PG Tips
December 2 2020
How swiftly fortunes change! Resurgent and a title contender six weeks ago, Bath now lie bottom of the Premiership table, winless after the first two matches with a depressingly negative points balance. The forward dominance of last season blunted and the more ambitious attacking style only fitfully effective, they seem lost in a maze of confusion, unable to find the way out. A visit to Warriors who languished in the lower quarter of the table for the past 5 seasons could offer the way out they need. Can Bath seize their chance and arrest the slide?
The improvements of August to October suggest a temporary hangover, but unless they return to winning ways soon, Bath will be left behind by the leaders and consigned to a relegation battle, adding urgency to what is now a critical encounter. That only one of the past five meetings between the teams at Sixways has been decided by more than six points shows this will be no easy task. Bath must do without the services of Stuart, Underhill, Faletau, Joseph and Watson to international calls and injury while Worcester must do without Weir, Du Preez and possibly Lawrence on international duty and will be missing Kvesic and Mama to injury. Despite these absences home advantage, with 2,000 home spectators allowed may still favour the Warriors.
Warriors pride themselves on the strength and stubbornness of their forwards but with their first choice back row, Graham Kitchener and possibly Schonert missing, will be short of full strength up front. Much will rest on the shoulders of the highly impressive Ted Hill if they are to be competitive at the breakdown. Behind they have the experience and guile of Hougaard paired with the youthful enthusiasm of Searle to guide them from halfback, the physicality of Morris and hard running Springbok Venter at centre plus the bustling and pacey Howe out wide.
Sometimes the simple approach is the best way out of a maze. Concentrating on first principles, clear thinking, clear direction and strength of conviction can work where subtlety risks indecision. Bath will want to impose themselves on the depleted Warriors pack. A return to basics is necessary. Gain the set piece edge, compete at the breakdown to frustrate and to win turnover ball, play to territory, exert and sustain pressure and take all points on offer. Such an approach usually works best with few personnel changes, but such was the manner of defeat last week at Sandy Park that Stuart Hooper must be considering some – taking into account form, psychology and, above all attitude.
Up front the availability of Obano, Dunn and probably Ewels will give him a boost. He may opt to start Judge ahead of Thomas who struggled at Exeter and surely it is time to deploy the physicality and combativeness of Stooke and Ellis? Behind the scrum Matavesi has seemed off the pace, so moving Redpath inward to twelve and promoting Clark may add fluency in the backline and help straighten the attack. Another change I would propose would be to start Rokodoguni in light of Cokanasiga’s defensive exposure last weekend and bring big Joe off the bench once the opposition defence has been fully tested.
Whoever plays Bath must use this week’s preparation time on discipline, basic skills, accuracy and clear thinking under pressure. They need to seize the initiative, turn the screw and take the win: ugly if necessary, to find the way out and up. If not, this threatens to be a long and frustrating season.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Obano, Dunn, Judge, Ewels (Capt.), Stooke, Ellis, Reid, Mercer. Spencer, Priestland. McConnochie, Redpath, Clark, Rokodoguni. De Glanville.
Replacements: Schoeman, Batty, Thomas, McNally, Williams. Chudley, Matavesi, Cokanasiga.
Worcester: Black, Annett, Palframan, Bresler, Kitchener, Batley, Hill, Williams. Hougaard, Searle. David, Venter, Morris, Howe. Nanai
Replacements: Cutting, Waller, Carey, Merrick, Dodd. Simpson, Shillcock, Beck

After the end of last season it feels oh so familiar having that sinking feeling going into a match not knowing which Bath is going to turn up!

Hopefully not the same Bath as the last 5 games, Gloucester, Saracens, Exeter, Newcastle and Exeter again.

Bath won 31 - 20 vs Gloucester.
A 'euphoric derby day' it was....
So I guess you mean the last 4 games, 2 of which were vs Exeter at Sandy Park. Definitely NOT the 3 games before that of course (wins vs Sale, Worcs, Quins). Anyone would think that you were being deliberately selective just to be provocative BO, but we know you better than that.
But, good review PGT and agree with the sentiment, which is most definitely COYB!

But ok, let's ignore the collapse at the end of last season and only focus on the last two games.

I wasn't being selective, I'm talking about our last 5 matches. All terrible, bar 20 minutes against Gloucester, and 40 against Sarries.
But ok, let's ignore the collapse at the end of last season and only focus on the last two games.
If only the club knew whether you were available for motivational speeches....

Yes, those were terrible. Early in the season it is but for me the next two games are critical. If we are 4 games in an have lost to all 3 of the pre-season bookies favourites for the drop then things are probably as dire as you think they are.

I think some of our players have been and will continue to be victims Spencer is the one who immediately springs to mind - a real noticeable drop off in intensity from him since being overlooked - Let's be honest no-one has come out of the first 2 games with any real credit - my concern from the Chiefs game was that our returning Internationals appeared in the struck with the same malaise as their fellow team mates - there should have been a spark and there was absolutely nothing.
As for our coaching team - you have to question their thought process especially with young Redpath - playing exceptionally well at 12 in the latter part of last season - then moving him to 13 to accommodate Josh M who looks heavy and not match fit is strange to say the least, then look at the effect some of the messages these selections are sending to other players who are continually being overlooked for players who don't even play in their position - I do wonder if all is happy under Hoops regime, I suppose we will find out sooner rather than later - these next 2 games will be huge - no doubt about it.
Interesting comments from Copester - I have mentioned before that I did not believe the club is reaching out to it's supporters in the same way other clubs appear to be and got slammed on this forum for suggesting this - so I am glad I am not the only one who feels the club has distanced itself from it's supporters.

I'm in that group as well Ali, other than begging for my cash on a regular basis (good luck with that as I have none) I feel that we get very little information of any sort from the club outside match days unlike some of the more media savvy / connected clubs. I know that some don't care about this, but others would definitely welcome more interaction. My kids get most of their info from the players individual social media accounts which seems a bit strange to me in these time when the internet and social media reigns supreme.

Congratulations to 18 year old Ethan Staddon who gets the nod over Spencer at Lock (I assume Ewels wasn't released?). Disappointed that the same 12 and 13 combination has been used given the issues thus far this season and the backs look a bit ponderous to me. What has happened to Ellis? (he had a great match in this fixture a few months ago).
Need a result and Worcs will smell blood in the water. COYB!

Can't argue with too much of that. Good luck Ethan Staddon!
9 months younger than Orlando Bailey, in same year at Beechen. Lets hope he is in the Ted Hill, Curry twins mould of being an early developer in lock / back row terms.
Strong Worcs team:
15 Melani Nana, 14 Perry Humphreys, 13 Oli Morris, 12 Francois Venter, 11 Nick David, 10 Duncan Weir, 9 Francois Hougaard, 1 Ethan Waller, 2 Niall Annett, 3 Richard Palframan, 4 Anton Bresler, 5 Andrew Kitchener. 6 Ted Hill (C), 7 Tom Dodd, 8 Cornell du Preez.

what message does staddon's promotion send out to will spencer?
Staddon plays lock and back row I think, so with the 5-3 bench offers more versatility?

Which sort of confuses me somewhat, is it easier to be a young forward as opposed to a young back or does Orlando Bailey have to wait for injuries?

I assumed spencer was also but as matt says staddon plays backrow and lock....and williams can cover lock also so maybe gives us better options.
Staddon (and richards) are v highly rated and sound good blokes based in their offy bios.
I always like to see a young home grown player trusted and yet another beechen boy. Sure Bailey's time will come. No huge rush tho would like to see it on our terms rather than waiting on injuries.
I will be cheering our guys all the way with everything crossed - but that Warriors team is strong couple that with being at home and little change in our backline I cannot say I am full of confidence especially given our back play or lack of it in the last 2 games.
Personally do not get the Orlando Bailey thing - Congrats to Staddon same age as Bailey but playing in a hugely more confrontational position - again what message is that sending to young Bailey especially when he can see our backline struggling so much.
Lose this and Hoops may have to look above and more so behind for the Sword of Damocles or should I say the Sword of Craig.
Come on Bath.

Think this is a make or break game for Hooper (or should be), lose it and BC will have to act before it’s too late.
For what OB. There is not going to be wholesale change after last season. The most radical interventionI can think of might be a backs coach addition. BC has chosen the long route you don't get rapid reaction on that road.

For what? Look at the table, we are failing.
BC may have chosen the long route for some reason, but even the low bar he has said couldn’t tolerate relegation.

I agree with SW, 3 games in is too soon unless Bath get hammered as that would suggest the players have lost all confidence in the coaches. Even if that happens it will probably be Hooper who sorts it out. He is not a coach.

Personally I disagree, Hooper is the problem not the solution. Same as the problems at the football team I support, Arsenal. Man in charge with absolutely no experience.
If you put the apprentice in charge of the shop floor it’s always going to lead to disaster.

Certainly Stuart Hooper is at the top of the playing side of the Bath Rugby tree, but he seems a bit of an easy target if he’s selected Hats (who most people seem to rate) to select and coach the squad!

Best you can hope for is 3rd OB, Arsenal have never had the financial clout to win it and you need a Neymar, Salah, DeBryne figure or two in your team. Desperate for a Vierra type leader to be frank.
With Bath you never know though there are scarily similarities with Arsenal!

There seems to be a ridiculous amount of over reaction from (not) all corners. We came out half baked against Newcastle having seemingly sleep walked through pre-season. It was a big mistake but come the end of the season we may have more in the locker as a result. However, we had an impressive end to last season. I certainly didn’t expect us to get into the top 4/5, well ahead of the 6th place. Neither did the rest of you be honest. Credit goes to the coaches + Hooper but suddenly he is the villain of the piece again. Cut the guy some slack for heavens sake! The same applies to JC the whatever. The bloke has been out for yonks. You can’t just write him off after a couple of poor games including a try. Unbelievable!

I sometimes wonder why I support both. Maybe some masochistic tendency. Or maybe it's the enormous emotional dynamic range. I share your pain, is there a more frustrating combination of teams to support? Both have the same fundamental problem (although Arsenal’s is compounded by an owner refusing to spend what is necessary). Neither are remotely close to getting it right on the pitch.
Win the next 2 games and we can stabilise and hopefully build on what we achieved post restart.
Lose the next 2 and we are in for a horrid season potentially.
I broadly feel lots of things have been going in the right direction over the last 18 months but the last few games have been completely unacceptable for a club wanting more than utter mediocrity. They need to show some character and desire at minimum over the next week.
Let us not forget the players have to take an enormous amount of responsibility for what is going on and I know people like Dunny and Charlie et al will be really hurting and wanting to put things right.
We don't really know what is going on, we have appeared to come out in this new season and wanted to expand our back play but our 10 is not the right 10 to do that..frustrating as it is that is the issue for me coupled with a lack of passion, lethargy and general malaise - some of the players and again this is a personal responsibility remember these are professional athletes look unfit and that is unforgivable.
Can we win today - Yes of course we can but let us not do Warriors a disservice like Falcons and believe it is a given - this is a strong Warriors outfit, well coached and on home turf with supporters - they rightly IMHO have to be favourites - but if we play to our abilities we can win - and that is what I am praying for.
Come on Bath.
It happens in games, we'll stop playing after a couple of early tries and think the game is won, and it happens more broadly when it comes to say, making a Premiership final, and then falling off a cliff the next season or finally making the semi finals again and then....?
I'm sure the players will bounce back against Worcester and London Irish but unless the standard picks up long term then these games won't mean much. This culture of medocrity needs to end.
The burning desire and club culture you see at places like exeter, sarries, bris just seems to be missing imho.
I remember exeter vs sarries at sandy park after the salary cap scandal. Absolutely crackled with pride, emotion, desire....even as a neutral (wanted ex to win on the day) it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
2 proud clubs, fierce ambition, very tight squads and management absolutely desperate to be top dogs. The only time i use 'absolutely desperate' in relation to bath has a v different meaning.
I am prepared to give hoops some time to build that as going homegrown academy route. At the same time i accept someone like pat lam and come in and almost immediately achieved it!

Let’s be honest - the Rec only occasionally ‘crackles’ as a crowd. It’s the club equivalent of old Twickers - a bit too polite. It’s as much of a ‘social’ as a bearpit, and often out sung by opposition fans. All part of the same overall syndrome?
With the standard on show these past 5 years, you can’t blame the Rec crowd for being quiet.

Let’s hope Bath’s lead gives them some confidence to play. If they sit on this and let Wuss back in the telly’s getting it.
However Redpath seems to be doing ok at 10 and looks dangerous when he gets the ball in his hands.
In a way, I don't want to see players like Ewels get yellow for accidental head clashes and would be fine with it not being a penalty. But Morris lead with this head at head level, even if he didn't intend to connect. Should have been a penalty, at least.
I’d obviously rather see him in space and crashing through players with ball in hand but it’s a useful extra dimension to his game and he’s clearly not afraid to get his shirt dirty.

It really is quite amazing that BO disappears when we are winning!
Does anyone else think you can make a cup of tea in the time Hougard puts the ball in waiting for the oppo to shove early?
Coochie, you do have the power to make BO disappear permanently.
That would be a nice Christmas present for many who frequent the board!

Positives for me are Spencer, Dunn, Stooke, with Bayliss, TDG and Reid also developing into solid players. Starting from row looked solid. Bath adapted well to their 10 and 12 going off. 5 points which shoots Bath up the league table.
Negatives, some of the Bath players shouldn't be near the 23 at the moment IMO when they are so clearly out of form (age or rustiness) and there are more than able players in the squad in the same positions. I can't understand how the Bath management and coaches can watch that game and consider them for the next fixture, which they undoubtedly will.
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
BO might disappear like ice on a barbecue when Bath start winning, but if anyone thinks that was evidence of a decently coached team I was watching a different match. The 5 points should get the monkey off their backs and hopefully we kick on from there, but the overall quality was dire.Wuss butchered 5-6 chances. Can’t question the heart and grit (welcome back Stookey), or the set piece excellence. Thomas and Schoenert looked a bit better. TdG worked hard. But Joe C is still miles off the pace.

I think you have to give them more time BathMatt. This is a strange but long & intense season. Clearly the coaches decided not to over train them going into the new season after such a demanding end to last season. This has caused some players to not be fully match fit. Don’t write them off just yet! Also, they don’t want to rush youngsters into the fray too soon. It all takes careful management & I’m confident they know what they are doing.
Yes, Worcester found too many gaps, but as said above- how many of those were blocking? They only really exploited our defensive issue late on when the backline was completely out of shape.
The key question now is: will that boost confidence for the matches to come?

Jaco Coetzee: my adopted Player, 2023-24.
Far from perfect, but considering the make up of our back line for the vast majority of the game (did we end with wingers in the centre and a forward on the wing?) taking 5 points from the game is a massive vindication of morale and attitude. Sure, Worcs weren’t all that good but that’s their problem. We took our chances, dominated the set piece and managed the game quite well without our starting 10 and 12. Well done Spencer and Redpath. Mercer excellent too.
One win doesn’t a good start to the season make (far, far from it), but I enjoyed that, the chaotic final 10 aside when I still thought we might find a way to concede 3 tries. Onwards.
Wuss butchered numerous chances which would have made it a very different game. Some questionable reffing, but I'll take it. It's 5 pts and a win. After the first 2 weeks it's something to build on
Unlike BO I am happy to take a less than perfect bonus point win! I am one of those who stop following the site when things are bad, simply because people like BO are bad for my mental health...
I will watch the match later tonight, and be grateful for some "Green Shoots". Interesting that today the three winning teams were all the away side?
Onwards, and upwards Bath.
RP and JM will be unavailable for selection, so does Redpath start the next game. Certainly didn't look out of place at 10. Midfield tackling fell to bits and I've no idea where Ethan Staddon played when he subbed for Ruaridh McConnochie.
Just hope Ben Spencer is OK. Josh Bayliss and Zach Mercer both had great games and its incredible how we missed Dunn when he was away he was bossing the pack and made some great tackles.

But still, congrats Bath. A good 15 minutes or so in there somewhere.
It's just that I want to deliver some deep fried potato slices to him. Poor chap, it seems that someone pi*ses on his chips every week! I can provide fish or sausage to accompany......

Lots to work on and out but at least a win.

First half was extraordinary I doubt we had more than 30% possession but scored three tries!
The half time multiple repeats of the tries had the stats overlaid and surprisingly it was 45% Bath, 55% Wuss.

Look at how we played today, win the ball, kick for position. 1 x 40 m instead of 40 x 1m. Not pretty but when you win line outs as easily as we did today made perfect sense.

Also, possession doesn't equal wins.

All I’m asking for is the BASIC skills to hold onto the ball for more than a pass or two. We’re just comical at it. I don’t get it.
We may not want to do that sometimes, but we should have it as an option otherwise it is a weakness.
Thought we were also unlucky with the reffing of the Priestland head on head given with what happened with Ewels v Newc. Can’t see the consistency. The Worcs player bent at the waist but not low enough to avoid a head collision, so as dangerous as Ewels’ if not more so because of the force involved. Struggle to see how the framework was correctly applied between the two incidents.
So it was a pretty chaotic game when scoring chances and reffing decisions could have gone either way. Hence given the doldrums we were languishing in prior to kick off, 5 points away from home is a big positive. Yes, plenty to work on for the coaches but most important for me was the resolve and spirit the team showed. Lose your 10 and your replacement 10 in the first 20 and you need some guts and guile to work it out. Work it out and score 4 tries, even better. Bodes well that the whole squad and management have stuck together during what must have been a very disappointing few weeks. Onwards and upwards (hopefully).

Clearly not as comical as Wuss.
Tedious in defeat, tedious in victory.
Guess you're over on the Wuss board too ramming defeat down their throats, as is oft your want (except the sites that have banned you).
I don't recall any knock ons or handling errors from us today, bar the iffy one against Zac for Spencer's disallowed try.
Defence was all over the shop in the second half but hardly anyone was playing in position.
Worcs: 52% (51%/54%)
Bath: Possession 48% (49%/46%)
A big difference was:
Worcs Bath
13 Clean breaks 3
28 Defenders beaten 11
But its all very well beating people if you can't put the ball down (as Humphries couldn't).

Yes, they might have taken a couple more chances and it might have been tighter... but we didn’t take all of ours. Obano’s ‘try’ was chalked off for a Spencer knock on which looked like it came off his boot. Mercer’s knock on for Spencer’s disallowed try looked like it went sideways. Either way, and maybe the ref was right, we should have been more accurate and arguably further ahead.

+ thumbs up!
I knew at the end of the match what I was going to post on 'ere.
However I decided to wait and then read what everyone else has said.
I am not going to go into the detail............how many clean breaks through the centres where they made 30, 40, metres. From 60 minutes Bath were pretty useless..........but then I am sure everyone on 'ere has played in matches where you were miles ahead in the first 60 minutes, or miles behind and suddenly with nothing to lose or nothing to win the game was transformed.
Notwithstanding all of the above I think a group of young and very young players played well and played well together with real heart. Matavesi and RP leaving the pitch, I hope they are both OK , made it inevitable that the young players had to step up.
Yes I know Worcester butchered chances but do you know what that is not my/our problem!
On another thread (Obano?) I said I would like a team like Newcastle...........after the departure of Matavesi and RP I think that's something like we got.
I am most encouraged!
Particularly when you see Newcastle beating Wasps away and Exeter beating Leicester away puts our other two results in context.
Maybe we are not quite as much like faeces as a number of people on 'ere seemingly would like to think we are!!!
Whatever happens it has to account for Redpath's dodgy tackling his other stuff is OK. Rory to 13 perhaps.
Otherwise you are into the Academy, Bailey and Ojomoh for a full 80 mins. Yikes.

I can't knock that, credit where its due they were resilient, games like that can be great for team building. Problem with those two concussive injuries is who replaces them?
In answer to the question I'm pleased with the result but any side with a decent set of backs is going to target the midfield. Perhaps Baylis should act as a sweeper!

Exactly my perception. Before the game I was thinking that Wuss are not dissimilar to Falcons. Very dogged, aggressive up front with a sound, in-your-face defence and some quick talent outside that can cause problems with a shrewd operator at 10. Wuss also have a class 9
So. To come away from Sixways having scored 5 tries, securing a try bonus point within the game context of losing first choice 10 and back up 10 very early and giving meaningful game time for youngest ever player to pull on the BBW and only conceding two tries all game
I think Hoops and Hats are entitled to a few bevvies and go to bed very pleased with today

My take is that last week our team missing our internationals was terrible with very few positives but today although overall the structure was awful there were some flashes of brilliance and a desire to win. I don’t really mean this but in a way I’d like to build a team around this lot, I hate the disruption of international matches even though I love them. I would like the coaches to develop a team for the season and if that means a star is sometimes on the bench fine. I’d rather Bath were a reliable top 4 team where we knew where we stood for now. Just some consistency.
Clearly the DOR & coaches want that too. They have to adopt some rotation, however, for a whole host of reasons. The team selected against Newcastle were capable of beating them but they were under prepared and/or had an off day. The group as a whole has to progress, not just the ones for whom things wen well yesterday, some of whom played against Newcastle. IMHO of course!
1. After losing RP & JM did Max W go to inside centre? So who slotted in at outside centre ? Rory McC?
2. When young Staddon came on did he go into back row?
3. Who from pack joined the backs at that point & who played where in the backs from that point?
Must have been a real patchwork similar to my days playing for Smiths in Cheltenham (mainly on the wing ...)
2. Yes
3. Chudley (9), Redpath (10), JoCo (11), Wright (12), Roko (13), Bayliss (14), TdG (15)
Quote:nigewing
Did not see the game but to help me understand how we adapted to the injuries can somebody answer these:
1. After losing RP & JM did Max W go to inside centre? So who slotted in at outside centre ? Rory McC?
2. When young Staddon came on did he go into back row?
3. Who from pack joined the backs at that point & who played where in the backs from that point?

1. Yes, with RMcC at 13 and Redpath at 10
2. Yes, with Bayliss going into the backs.
3. See 2, Bayliss appears to have the pace to catch a winger who was given a 5m head start, although then go a yellow card for not rolling away!
Observation on Joe C missing tackles in 1st two games: he is not moving his feet so is left attempting an arm tackle where he is diving to reach the attacker. Easy to brush off or break through & leaves Joe stretched out on the deck watching attacker disappear. His technique looks slow & cumbersome ☹️
Quote:BathMatt53
Don't really want to start naming individuals CBoA. I'm not sure I totally made my point accurately yesterday either tbh. I guess there must be some players who really smash it out of the park in the week in training (when we don't see them) because based on what I have seen from them on the pitch, I wouldn't be picking them unless I really had to due to injuries / call ups. So I can understand why the Bath management pick them, but it can't be for their match play.
Fair enough. Made me look classless naming and shaming chudley now ha ha ha. Just find it crazy we actively go out and get green and fox.... then never give either any game time. I think its important most get a go over next few months to assist decisions about squad for next season.
I just couldn't really think of many individuals who are consistently poor, just a general malaise of basic errors and lack of aptitude through the team over the first 3 rounds.
Tbf we showed a degree of grit to cope with the huge amount of disruption through the game. That backline by the end was fairly extraordinary...

Still struggling with interpretations of officials in relation to tackle on Rhys, bearing in mind Maxwell-Keys wanted to send Charlie Ewels off for whst I consider a very similar incident - same outcome in relation to players welfare.
Personally I am with Foley on his interpretation providing the tackle is legal then unfortunately it is a contact sport and these things happen. What the players need is consistency.
I am over the moon with a 5 point victory although I did think some of our defence particularly in the midfield was paper weight - the amount of times in the second half Warrior's seem to bust up the middle was concerning.
It is nice though to be citing issues in the back of a 5 point win, I would imagine the changing room will be relieved. Well done boys let us build jow.
Pleasantly surprised by Redpath’s efforts at out half and Ben Spencer back to his normal performance thankfully.
But McNally was MotM easily, with the other forwards putting in solid shifts.

Utter nonsense rating - Bayliss was a MotM challenger in my mind. Marking him down for the sinbinning is idiotic. His speed to recover and stop a near certain try was exceptional and the penalty itself was borderline. I think we are a much better side with Stooke and Bayliss playing.
Some refs would have deemed he had released but others don't like the tackle/roll/tackle technique.

Well agree with you on McNally. He had an outstanding first half and looked out on his feet as they went off at half time only to come back and deliver another awesome 40+ minutes
But not about Mercer. He was very good, took a lot of physical stuff and was always going forward. In fact wasn't he top of stats for metres made and defenders beaten? His only error that I saw was to knock on a bobbling ball at base of a twisting scrum that ruled out a try he made with taking man and passing outside to Spencer

Or Worcester (and I am a Worcester fan , who had the misfortune to be there). For the third week on the trot, we left at least 2 tries off the scoreboard
The knock on that rubbed out Ben's try was arguably sideways and not forwards but anyway was a horrible bobbling ball on floor from base of twisting scrum. A forgivable error that one and what else was there that I didn't see?
It's kind of hilarious that Eddie makes such a big fuss about Ben Earl training with the backs, when Faletau and Tipuric cut better lines and have better hands than most centres.

After seeing a sleeping Rhys clawing at the air, which was really concerning / horrible, I definitely don't want to see him anywhere near the pitch even if the doc gives him the all clear.
Agreed. Great chance to give players game time who need it and rest those who could do with a break/need managing through the season.
Rhys surely wont be risked. Redpath went ok at 10. I would give bailey a go myself. Not much to lose in Europe, the big cup is a thankless task for English clubs who aren't exeter really....

Who is management? Must be Bruce and Tarquin because they are the only two above Hoops who is in charge of the Rugby Department and responsible for all rugby matters reporting to Tarquin and of course Bruce. I expect he’s been given a budget and has to work within those parameters.

I wouldn’t expect Hooper to have to waste time on contract negotiations. I doubt he has much experience of that, surely down to Tarquin to seal the deal?

I think that's precisely one of the things the DoR should be doing. Tarquin approves the funds available. Hoops may be inexperienced but he's got to start learning somewhere.
... IMHO, of course.
