WARRIORS FOR THE WORKING DAY. BATH v WORCESTER
Dunn: outstanding
By PG Tips
March 16 2021
Both teams will aim to be “warriors for the working day” when Worcester visit the Rec on Saturday. Worcester will be desperate for warrior spirit to rescue them from the bottom of the table where they are firmly anchored. Bath for their part continue to be constrained by injury. They will seek to brush handicap aside with another workmanlike performance like last weekend’s bonus point win on Tyneside.
Shakespeare gave the words “warriors for the working day” to Henry V in his conversation with a French herald before the battle of Agincourt. The phrase described his small force, depleted by illness and scruffy from weeks in the field. He ends the speech with a warning to the effect that “ we may look like amateurs. But we are in good heart and my men say they will be celebrating victory before nightfall.” Worcester surprised London Irish last Sunday with the ferocity of their fightback, almost snatching a win. Bath must beware complacency. Boosted by that spirit Worcester may fancy their chances but Bath have been repairing their leaky defence and have won 4 of their most recent 5 matches.
Warriors traditional style since arriving in the Premiership 17 years ago has been a stubborn pack backed by two pragmatic half backs and a determined ability to grind out tight wins. In the past few seasons they have broadened their game, moving the ball impressively to their wings and making several incisive midfield busts in their frustrated fightback against Irish. Schonert, Kitchener, Clegg, Kvesic and Du Preez up front will test Bath’s forwards game. If they win front foot ball the trickery of Hougaard and the control of Weir at halfback will probe any weakness in Bath’s defence as will robust centre Francois Venter, the main midfield go to man. If he can get behind Bath’s first line, quick release to Humphreys or Ashton out wide will spell real danger for Bath.
Last time these two teams met, at Sixways, Bath triumphed 33-17, scoring 5 tries to 2 despite losing 2 flyhalves within minutes of each other. There will be a sense of déjà vu this week as they await injury reports on both Rhys Priestland and Tian Schoeman injured at Newcastle. Schoeman could be out for a while so if Priestland does not recover it looks as if Josh Matavesi will once again be needed at 10. Even with a makeshift and disrupted backline Bath have the firepower to rip holes in a defence through counter attack as they showed in flashes last Saturday despite the blustery winds at Kingston Park.
First though they will want to impose control and blunt Warriors’ energy. That means the usual role for the usual suspects. The front five will scrummage, drive, maul and aim to pound the Worcester defence till it can resist no more. Tom Dunn, outstanding since his brief flirtation with England, is the inspiration but the collective effort gives all five, plus replacements the chance to shine. Underhill, Mercer, Reid and Ellis (or if fit, Bayliss) will want to reprise the predatory play that clipped the falcons claws. With any edge in territory or possession Bath can then unleash the penetration of Joseph and De Glanville, the hard running of McConnochie and Cokanasiga.
Recent signs of revival have been illuminated by some highly exciting back play. More of the same will be welcome on Saturday. Bath’s next four matches are all against lowly or mid table sides- an opportunity to continue building momentum. For that reason I believe “Warriors for the working day” will be the theme. A win is the priority. If that means workmanlike before flashy, so be it.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Schoeman, Dunn, Thomas, Stooke, McNally (Capt.), Reid, Underhill, Mercer. Spencer, Priestland. Cokanasiga, Matavesi, Joseph, McConnochie. De Glanville.
Replacements: Cordwell, Walker, Judge, Ellis, Staddon. Fox, Bailey, Rokodoguni.
Worcester Warriors: Waller, Cutting, Schonert, Kitchener, Clegg, Batley, Kvesic, Du Preez. Hougaard, Weir. Humphreys, Venter, Morris, Ashton. David.
Replacements: Miller, Thomas, Palframan, Dodd, Van Velze. Heaney, Searle, beck.

Time to introduce Bailey.

Redpath I think will be back imminently and it really wouldn't surprise me if him and josh cover 10 with bailey not even making the 23 in our remaining games.....sadly....

Hopefully an incentive for jj rather than a kick when he is down

This is the problem. There will be a reluctance to throw him into the fray without adequate game time. I don’t think there are any University or A team matches so there will be a reluctance to put him straight into the team in such a vulnerable position. They value him highly & consider him to be our equivalent of Marcus Smith so need to get the balance right in the present circumstances. I would sooner we were not too hasty but it can’t be long before he features regularly.

I'd say that's something of a 'kick' ... though not as much of a kick as it is to Lawrence and/or Odogwu if he goes straight into the starting XV!
If I were Eddie I'd be tempted to give Daly a go at 13.
I want younger players to get game time but we do need some experience alongside them. I like Matavesi as a player but think he needs to focus on his own game rather than shepherd players inside hime.

We need to get, and stay 20 points clear and then bring him on for 10 minutes at the end of a game............and then 15 and then 20.
What you are saying BSJ and others is you can only introduce young players when the team is winning. He is a professional rugby player, if he is that fragile find one that isn't! He isn't a baby, look at him. If I were him I would feel that the club don't trust me to do a job both in attack and defence.
I really don't hold with that view. Clearly not a full 80.
This is him at 18 playing against Ioan Lloyd, the Bristol and Wales fly half. Bailey scored two tries to Lloyds one. He is bulkier now. BathMatt53 can tell us if he is physically up to it, he has seen him training.

This is Bailey last month.

Physically I have no concerns when comparing him with Ioan Lloyd, Jacob Umaga, Marcus Smith even George Ford.
Hoopers view this morning is that we have sufficient cover.
Despite very little domestic rugby taking place in the UK in the last 12 months because of the Covid-19 pandemic, England Rugby have been organising and playing games at U20s level which has given the likes of Bailey and Worboys the chance to play competitive games.
Hooper continued: "We are probably in a very similar position to where we were before Tian arrived but the only positive in my eyes is that Orlando and George have progressed in their ability to play 10 for us.

“we have got Orlando [Bailey] who has developed very well in training and in the games he has had for England U20s.”
In the first Member Virtual Event he spoke of introducing players at the best possible time, when ready. SW- you could conclude that rather than "not trusting" Hoops wanted him to get the necessary preparation game time. If so, good management as with Big Joe.

I realise that now it was labelled Orlando Bailey in the search but I should have checked. I've seen images of him, perhaps in a video, he isn't small in stature by any means, that was my point. Prem Cup cancelled so not opportunities there and according to Gaz we are in advanced talks with Cipriani.

Hooper's description of Redpath's fitness sounds similar to what they said about Underhill a few weeks back before he appeared in the starting XV. Wouldn't be surprised to see Redpath at least in the 23 this weekend.
He does seem to go with the approach of over stating how long he expects people to be out and we get the odd pleasant surprise!

Not at all Opti, this is the start of a "woke" few who realise that the term u20 is ageist and has been ageist for years. The rights of kids to be able to be free to have their brains knocked about just like any old rugby player HAVE to be recognised.
In 5 years time when Bailey and Ojomoh are established Bath players you will realise how repressive this regime currently is....... oh hang on a minute.
Far to much focus on rugby politics like left wing play, right wingers have rights too, look at what Roko has done for us.
I'm also campaigning for half backs to have their other half returned to them. Centres are acceptable but I actually think the term 'backs' should be replaced by 'ball artists' (backs is a bit negative) and kickers is far too aggressive, needs to be replaced by 'ball percussionists' or perhaps 'points accumulators' hasn't been decided yet. There will be a poll I expect.
P.S. Need to look at the kit too, do they do vegan rugby balls?

You jest, but I'm hoping to watch a few Forest Green games when such things are allowed. Partly because I like Nailsworth and think it amazing that such a pretty little town has a professional football team, but mainly because of their efforts regarding the environment, to the extent that Hector Bellerin is an investor. Their shirts were made of bamboo if I recall correctly, but they're now using recycled coffee grounds and only veggie food in the ground I think (Not fact checked this but could be right!). Anyway, my son hates sport, but he's a veggie so he's agreed to watch 2 games there as a trial.

Yes, Bailey will be feeling like a veteran!
Fly-half Fin Smith will become the youngest Warriors player to start a Gallagher Premiership match when he lines up in all English qualified side against Bath Rugby at The Rec on Saturday (kick-off 2.00pm).
Smith became only the second 18-year-old to play for Warriors in the competition when he came on as a 76th minute replacement at Gloucester three weeks ago.
Lock Graham Kitchener remains the youngest-ever player to represent Warriors in the competition – he was 18 years and 195 days when he came on as a replacement at Wasps in April 2008, but Smith will become the first 18-year-old starter at Bath.
Smith, who will be 18 years and 313 days old on Saturday, is a current member of the Three Pears Warriors Academy and will be one of 11 players in the starting XV who have come through the club’s academy.
Interestingly Smith (DOB 11 May 2002) is 3 months older than Staddon (2nd July 2002). A few very fresh faces out there this weekend.

Either way, nice looking Bath side. Great Thomas is getting a run of starts and he looks to be getting better with every outing. Interesting Muir is picked over JCok and Roko. And if we've got a bit of breathing space with 30 to go (no, I'm not sure we will as even 30 points up against Newcastle felt uncomfortable!) I would put on all the youngsters.
If Bailey comes on and has a blinder, will we say Hooper has managed him perfectly and introduced him at the perfect time OR why on earth hasn't he been on the bench for the past 6-12 months?
PG
Interesting that there seem to be long lists of 'unavailable' for many of the Prem teams this weekend. Glos missing 18, for example.
We have a few missing on international duty but our injury situation, certainly when compared to previous seasons and currently to other teams, seems ok. Wonder what that's down to?

11 out of their starting 15 through their academy. Have to be impressed with that commitment to developing own players
Looks like this is the weekend for new faces:
The Cherry and Whites will be captained by Matt Garvey with 15 of the match day 23 either coming from or graduating from the Gloucester Rugby Academy.
If this is a result of ringfencing plus also no premiership cups then I'm fine with that tbf, will be great to see a few hungry young lads pushing for places across lots of the teams this weekend.

They should have one day mid season when all the Prem clubs have to have a 50% complement of academy players. Or rather a 47% complement to avoid one academy player being sawn in half.

Really ought to be winning given how many wuss ate missing.
If we do this group of players have seriously exceeded my expectations during the 6 nations period and deserve a lot of praise.

I think Chudley is there to settle Bailey should he come on. An experienced head rather than Fox is a more sensible option. I’d much rather Fox or Green in the squad but understand why.

That does make sense AWP. Shame we didn't know Worcester selection could maybe have started Bailey with Spencer then put Fox and Priestland on.
Just thinking about the returning internationals. I guess cordwell, Ewels and Staddon will prob drop from the 23 but how the hell do you squeeze Watson in. A nice problem to have I suppose.
Quote:Never In Doubt
When Watson comes back then for me he slots in on the wing alongside McC with TdG at 15.
So you are dropping Will Muir then! Not for me he is on the bench, while our 7s lads are still causing chaos, having said that they need to be finishing off tries.

I think its important to manage the guys coming back and also reward the guys who have done v well in their absence. Injuries tend to dictate selection to a large degree tbh so probably not much point over thinking it.
Quote:Never In Doubt
Absolutely - Watson for me is a class above Muir. Muir is developing incredibly well but Watson remains one of our few world class players.
He is pure class but Watson is lethal for England 22 tries from 53 matches but seems to struggle for Bath 19 tries from 81 matches.
Like JJ I sometimes think they don't have the same hunger for Bath.
Look how players like Spencer and Dunn have played and scored recently, he needs to have to fight to get selected. Thats the one thing Eddie Jones said I wholeheartedly agree with, "Go back and excel for your clubs:"

The question for me is does he go to 14 or 15? Bath (and I'd imagine Watson had a say) clearly thought his long term position was at 15, but England and EJ don't see it and his strike rate and work rate for England on the wing show that he is a world-class winger. So I'd leave him out wide.
I thought he would be England's full back by now as I thought his offensive and defensive skills suited 15 incredibly well, especially his running kick return. But having seen him develop as a winger of late, I think Bath should leave him at 14. This sense has only been heightened by the development and form of TdG who looks so comfortable and dangerous at 15.
So, for me, it's:
15 Tdg
14 Watson
11 every other winger can fight for this shirt... but it's McCon's to lose.
Quote:Never In Doubt
That is fair but also I think JJ and Watson have suffered at the hand of Bath tactics. Would want him back and firing. Muir makes good breaks but needs to make better decisions.
Yep, I agree with that.

I also think a big weakness of ours is support line running or support running full stop. Think everyone has been rather surprised by the ease with which muir has been making big line breaks, hopefully they will start helping him with those decisions by giving better options.

Yes, this, one of the problems is because no-one has made 3/4 breaks for ages there is no-one gambling on a support line looking for an offload. That's one reason why I'd quite like McC at 13 with Muir outside him so they could work some 7s magic !

Perhaps because he does so little when he gets it?

Tdg Hamstring?
Losing a half of rugby 7-22 to the team bottom of the table who are fielding a young team, is not on.
Quote:Welcome to the world of non relegation! Second half was disappointing but they did bring first teamers off the bench whilst we brought on some youngsters. which is possible in essentially meaningless fixtures( and the game already won! ).stephen4944
I don't care if the game was already won.

The game was won. It’s inevitable a team that far ahead loses intensity. We’ve seen it in reverse more than a few times and every time the Bath critics say the same about how it’s no surprise the losing team are allowed a couple of tries after it’s been so one sided.
Their bench did well, but that first 40 was some of the best rugby I’ve seen us play in a long while. Yes, still searching for an 80 minute performance, but I’d take bonus point win all day long.
Hope Rhys is ok. Hopefully just his pride dented at being charged down.

Games are 80 mins not 40 and after 80 minutes Bath had used both youngsters and first team, same as Worcester and outscored them by quite a bit. That’ll do I think.

A win would take us up to 7th
I've bought my lottery tickets, too!
Thought Underhill was excellent and Max Clark very good too. The Horse took his chances well, and Orlando certainly isn't afraid of the contact and good to see him given line and place kicking duties.
Did we get the fastest try bonus point? I had it at 22:30 I think.
Still much to work on but a great experience for a number of the youngsters.

To be clear, Worcester have failed to score 20pts in all but two of their games this season (in the whole game, not just a half), and that is their only try bonus this season.
Settling for "that'll do" isn't going to get us anywhere but the mediocrity we've seen much of this season.
Very happy with the bp win, but still not convincing over 80 minutes.
First time I have seen Bailey, and quite frankly he looked very green, I guess all the hyping up on here led me to expect more. Still wip and if he progresses like Tdg then maybe something to shout about in a season or two.
Dunner motm for me, and Josh McN now the automatic first choice lock, with or without Ewells being available.
For me, the positives were:
- Spencer looking right back on form;
- Muir, like RMc is a real gem;
- great to see so many of the academy get a run out;
- the score and 5 pts in the bag.
The negatives:
- hope the injuries aren't too bad. Second hammy concern for TDG in a month (or same one not healed?)
- won't be disappointed when a couple of the Bath squad move on, its a huge drop from some of the first 15 to the backups at the moment in a few positions;
Onward...COYB!

Thats because its the first time since a 5 minute cameo he has played there. He kicked OK, had to cope with ball from a considerably weaker pack in the second half but to my mind he looked OK.
Depends on RP's reason for substitution but he may have to start next time out!

Josh McN will play with Ewels with Stooke dropped.
I actually thought that Bailey played well, especially since he came on at 15 then moved to 10. Took his kick well too. Definitely lots to learn but green shoots.

We were at such a low ebb after bris/quins it really has been some effort.
Next week could potentially have beno, bhatti, stuart, ewels , spencer, bayliss, faletau, redpath, watson all back in the mix.
Obviously picked up a few injuries yest but could be some nice selection headaches and the luxury of resting players who would benefit from a break.
do ewels, faletau and watson walk into the side next week? not necessarily.

interesting that, in terms of results, we have barely been affected by call ups this year. i think this is down to the strength in the squad. plenty of cover for faletau, ewels and watson. we've struggled a bit at prop, but it could have been worse.

Personally would be tempted to give watson and faletau a rest as been a physically and mentally demanding few months. Saying that they may feel they benefit getting stuck straight into a new environment.
I would whack beno straight into first xv. Stuart on bench. Ewels in bench maybe.
Watson may depend a bit on muir and tdg fitness but still got good options.
My only issue was he allowed prebinding for the pick and go which I thought wasn’t allowed, but as a Bath supporter it benefitted us, so shouldn’t complain too much!
Handled the underhill tackle very well.
Tempest has been good in 2 of our recent games aswell I thought

Today’s scores suggest that ring-fencing leads to a lot of quite tries - but not really in a good way.
I'm in two minds about this even as a firm anti-ringfencer. On the one hand, my immediate reaction is it does feel a bit like basketball scoring. On the other, over time if it is likely to lead to a faster game with higher handling skills and a focus on looking for space rather than contact with more opportunities for younger players then isn't that a big positive?
I know that is a massively big 'if' so I dunno - guess we will see how rest of season pans out especially with return of internationals to their clubs
I think you are being a bit harsh on your team.
You absolutely crushed us out of site.
We were very poor, but physically you guys were in a different league. The second half drop off was because you were out of sight and we brought on a strong bench.
Worc have a habit of starting to play well when the game is gone.
It makes me shudder when I think who you had missing.
Leal was ok.
He didn't get the Underhill tackle right though. It was not malicious and David was falling significantly. But how he didn't see that he took a tackle straight to the head is beyond me. He picked the worst of all angles to view.
For me it was not a red or yellow, just a penalty, which would not have altered the game at all. But in this day and age it was a bit of officiating that they need to get right. But he is new and will get better.
I thought you guys were awesome, and are building nicely to the end of the season. Some strength in depth!
But actually agree this was a perfect example of what they're trying to do. Underhill's technique was low and legal. If he'd have been upright there would have been serious risk of headfirst contact and a card.
Underhill was tackling at a good height.
David was very low at point of contact.
I just suspect that at reffing review, someone will sit him down and say "in what world was the point of contact the shoulder?".
I don't believe there should have been any punishment. It was a pure rugby incident. Just baffled by the officials scooting over the angles that showed clear shoulder to head, and settling for the worst possible angle to judge.
But overall he did well.
Just sorry we couldn't give you any more than a training run.
Totally overwhelmed in the pack, and a back three apparently allergic to a tackle.
You guys are looking very strong, with lots of quality to come back.
It's close, but it looks like his arm makes contact with the shoulder to me.
Thanks for your input. Wous played a young side today and so it wasn't a surprise they were blown away in the first half. Two potential England fly halves on the pitch today which was good to see. Good luck for the rest of your season.
