BRAYING RIGHTS? BATH v GLOUCESTER

Ellis: another shift.
By PG Tips
November 9 2021

Bath and Gloucester will contest braying rights at Kingsholm on Friday evening. Braying, rather than bragging, for the noise from the Kingsholm faithful that will greet every Bath error. In any normal season the Premiership cup offers aspiring sides a chance to push for honours, nurture emerging talent and try out new combinations. Bath will not have that luxury this week. Selection will surely be determined by availability of fast reducing numbers and the urgent priority to win.

A low mid-table team themselves for the past 8 seasons, Gloucester will not be in a charitable mood in their Kingsholm lair. They will scent blood and vulnerability and go all-out for a morale boosting derby victory to boost their credentials for a tilt at the Premiership top table. That will make Hatley and Hooper’s task of balancing player rest, fringe player development and the pressing need for victory even harder.

With 20 absent through injury and international commitments, Bath’s selection is anybody’s guess. It is unlikely though to be just a United squad. If fit, there could be returns for Coetzee, Simpson and De Glanville. With a bye week to follow the pack choice could depend on how soon injured senior squad members are expected to recover. Verden and Cordwell will probably get a run out, as could Doughty. It is probably still too soon for Will Spencer so the choice at lock is limited, expect McNally, Ellis and Richards to do a shift again. At loose forward the increasingly influential Reid could be joined by de Carpentier, Merigan and Cowan.

Behind the scrum this could be an ideal opportunity for Will Butt’s first start. He and Max Clark, a direct centre pairing, can offer midfield strength to build a simple game of basics on.

There will be other young bucks hoping for a place in the 23 – perhaps Carr-Smith and Worboys who have shone recently for the University, or Atkins who has seen no action for nearly two seasons and must be itching to show his mettle.

Whoever takes the field, let us hope that the squad players bring the enthusiasm of youth and the determination to seize a rare chance. Let the veterans show the way by pressuring Gloucester, taking every point on offer and turning the screw. A “star is born” debut from an Academy player would be a delightful surprise, but the urgent need remains a win- however it is gained.

What we should do is bring out all the youngsters in a game with no meaning and give the senior players a bit of time to rest and recuperate, but given our 0/7 performance I think Hoopers mind will be on getting a win anywhere, no matter how insignificant the game, but what happens if he puts out a 'strong' side and gets beaten again?

+1

Play all the youngsters, putting out a strong team to get a win will be meaningless anyway.

My view is this is a development competition and should be regarded separately from the Premiership and European Champions Cup. In the spirit of the competition we should play development players and give our first team players a chance to rest and recuperate.

Teams have always used these secondary competitions in whichever way suits them as a club. It can end up with some mismatches, and personally I'd favour that the regulations mitigated against that happening, rather than depending on anyone to interpret the 'spirit' of the competition.

As things stand, however, I'd like to see Hooper do whatever he thinks is best for Bath. Giving Cipriani some more game-time would seem to me like a very good idea, for example, whilst Bailey might benefit from resting up. I don't really care if we win 50-0 or lose 50-0, as long as we see some benefit for the next Prem game.

It will be a development team with some senior players needing game time or returning from injury according to Chronicle:

'Lock Will Spencer looks set to make his first appearance of the season having recovered from the calf injury he picked in pre-season and Will Butt is set to run out in the centres having excelled on loan at Coventry Rugby in the Championship last season.'

Excited to see them both out on the pitch - for different reasons.

Interested to see how he goes- so big chat around him from coaches. Decent old lump and quick enough to play wing.

An argument to free up funds for other areas of squad by JJ going and not replacing him if they think clark/butt/wright could do a job (or mojo can play 13 when redpath back. Much prefer redpath at 12 than 13 personally)

Will be interesting to see how the young lads go.
A few have already shown promise for England U20 or in recent Bath first team cameos, others we know mostly by repute or through University appearances.

Hopefully there are some in there who will be wlel known names in the near future.

I like our outside backs....Glos have picked a very strong team, backrow in particular!

Good to see Jaco back, will be interesting to see how he goes.

Can't see a win, so I'll be happy with 3 or 4 tries, some encouraging play from the youngsters and no injuries.

(Still surprised that Mojo is being played again).

Generally happy with our selection, which I think is in keeping with the spirit of this competition and which rests key players. I will be anxious to see McConnochie, Dunn, Spencer, Coetzee and Rae emerge unscathed. We really do not need to see injures to any of these in particular.

Not really clear to me how this competition differs from the Premiership Rugby Shield? Wasn’t that the development competition, appropriately involving second teams.

Yes this is effectively a development competition involving second teams - its the anglo welsh cup without the welsh.

I remember a 2017 game at the Rec vs Tigers (anglo welsh cup) where Bath put out a strong side which only just beat a load of kids in a high scoring game. The Tigers kids really did themselves proud that day, a pen try for the win for Bath at the death.

Highlights:

A Freddie Burns chip that worked!!

Team sheets - A few familair tigers names now but not heard of many of them at that time.

Anyway, hoping for a similar performance from our kids this time around.

Interesting to look at those teams, matt. A mixed bag from both sides and shows how difficult it is to develop squads over long periods. Our XXIII that day includes only 4 players still at the club. Bayliss and Clark are now first squad regulars (-ish). 19 of the squad are gone. Don't know enough about Tiger's squad, but looks like Wells and Reffell are the 2 still there who have developed most.

Hard to know what a 'good' development outcome from that night to this should look like. On the same night in '17, Quins beat Worcester and Lang was at fly half, Chisholm and White were in the backrow. A lad called M Smith was on the bench. Sale played Sarries and from the starting XVs, I can see Langdon, Curry (Ben), Redpath as young lads who went onto bigger things and Earl, Malins, Tompkins who are now Sarries first team and internationals.

So whilst having only 2 players from a 'development' XV 4 years ago stepping up to first XV duties today might look thin, it might be average-ish across the league. Not sure if this says more about the competition (it's actually a cup where clubs don't play their stars of tomorrow, who play for 20 minutes in the league anyway, so prefer to fulfil these fixtures with, er, journeymen) or the clubs (who are all, pretty much, seemingly pretty bad at planning for the future).

It'll be interesting to see who in 4 years time is starting for us in the European Cup. If I had to bet, I'd pick Richards and Ojomoh.

.
It was a much more experienced team that we put out than them. We had more players starting that day that have since retired than were really development players.

Clark was 22, and so therefore it is only really Bayliss Green and Douglas that were development players at the time, of which all are still playing in the premiership. Even the bench which was much more developmental, it is only Darren Allinson and Jack Davies that are not playing in the premiership.

I'm glad that we have the team out we do tonight, it is a healthy mixture, and I think we will learn a lot about our team. Feels like Gloucester have gone down the route we went in 2017 which is very short termist. I'm sure we will get beaten, probably by a lot, but in 4 years time as with Leicester now I think we will be in a healthier position

Bristol have rolled out some heavy hitters against a youthful Exe side too. Horses for courses I guess, they are all doing what they think works best for their squad. I think that we have made the right call given all the injuries.

This sort of game is just another nail in the players confidence in the club 'leaders'. I don't see how senior management can stay much longer, there is now just too much baggage.

You can’t argue with Chilcotts assessment.

What really grates with me is that its Gloucester and the Shed that are having a field day.

I would sack Hooper by text at half time if I owned Bath.

This is the equivalent of Manu getting schooled by Liverpool except we are getting schooled by everyone at every level.

Awful. Attack and defence look so poorly coached. The team Glos picked should not be ‘5 tries after 40 minutes’ better than ours. We haven’t been in their 22. Pathetic.

Merigan looks good, mind.

So Ed Griffiths will be looking at personnel structure not coaching capability as that is not his area. Will he be able to tell if we have square pegs in round holes & coaches who aren’t effective. It’s a very narrow brief & as time goes on & the problem gets ever greater it becomes increasingly hard to solve.

Our young team clearly outclassed but the inability of the ref or tmo to see the constant offside and obstruction at ruck and lineout is rediculous. There were 2 players in front of Ludlow holding bath players when he scored but not even looked at.

Like Ajax we have a very clear style of playing all the way from the first team to the juniors. This experience will make it much easier for our boys to slot into the first team. I hope the media team have been with them all week explaining the importance of the phrases “learnings” and “pain” so that they aren’t surprised during an interview.

Spencer blowing after 10 minutes. Way too early for some of these youngsters. Several way out of their depth.

GHW doing well, but overall performance bordering on an embarrassment. Not sure that Hoops is even there.

I know some of you guys frown on football but they have a development competition called the Carabo cup.

Reserves or young teams from the top sides compete initially against teams from lower divisions. So they are well matched - like boxers. No one wants to see a mismatch it’s not sporting at all.

As the completion progresses and the better teams remain they feed more experienced players in.

We have very few opportunities for reserve or academy players, we could learn from football in this respect.

He himself has probably not received proper training for his role or received it from others who are not qualified to do so. An inexperienced team was likely to lose but not to be hammered like this, surely.

It's a bit of a stretch, but trying to find any positives and I think there have been a few glimpses of good individual play from some of the youngsters: Merigan has showed flashes, Butt has run some decent lines and looked for offloads, Ojomoh we know is class, Worboys hasn't really done anything wrong, and Richards has fronted up in the row.

It's just such a shame we can't integrate them on our own terms into a team with any degree of stability, let alone a winning one. Hooper talks about things like this, and I like the aspiration, but I don't think he's shown any evidence that he can deliver it.

I was relatively comfortable with the team selection. Some off those players should have been going into that game with more experience imho.

Have got unlucky with glos having a bye week last week and playing a pretty strong and experienced team.

Problem is you need to pass and catch to play rugby, and defend around rucks. We just look utterly clueless.

This is based on first half, I switched to watch a Midsomer murders for more excitement at half time.

I assume ed's report may involve realising that having no defence coach when shipping about 6 tries per game average may not be wise ....

Despite the scoreline I still think the team selection was right. With the amount of injuries we have I'm not sure there was much option anyway. If anything Gloucester's selection mystifies me.

I have been disappointed with the experienced players as much as anything. I don't know what has happened to Dunn. He is a shadow of the player he was.

I think the kids have learnt that they have a lot of work to do if they want to be professional rugby players and I'm not sure that is a bad lesson to learn.

The issues around set piece, discipline and basic skills do seem to be across the club and the coaching is a huge issue

I thought a win would be a stretch but I did not expect it to be that unfair....

Bearing in mind that most of these players are going to be the ones acting as opposition for our first team to train against, it shouldn't have gone that badly...

Throwing the ball around, without being able to back your defence just doesn't work. How long until those messages get through to the players.

No positives for me, unfortunately. Bath would have to pay me to go and watch them down the rec right now.

Really disappointed to hear Lilley blame it on individual errors. He might be out of his depth but it is just wrong to blame it on the academy players. Young players may well have made lots of errors but the critical few problems lie elsewhere.

Get the set piece right (recruitment), defence (coaching) and discipline (belief) right!

Terrible example of poor leadership.

Agreed, no one deserves that.

I don't see how Lilley can blame it on individual errors, they were underprepared.

Agree not fair from Lilley, although also not really fair to put him in front of the camera either.

Somehow, someone needs to instill some belief and confidence in the squad - clearly some new voices and approaches are needed.

Conceding an average of 38 points per match is not purely down to individual errors. Lilley mentioned system errors only once compared to individual errors about 3 times, that would seem to show that as a group of coaches they don’t get it…

They have to be interviewed but the comments coming from our coaches at the end of these drubbings are getting annoyingly repetitive & to say that you are happy with the coaching plan in such circumstances is utterly ridiculous. It probably makes little difference but we never hear a word from Hatley. He should have been fronting up tonight rather than the unfortunate Lilley.

Starting to look like Bruce Craig has lost interest.

Sorry - where do you get that from?

Ultimately from my own observations in his lack of making those running the club accountable for where we are.

Tarquin and Hooper and his coaches.

It’s obvious that Mark Lilley is way out of his depth as a rugby coach, he has never played top team rugby and as far as I can remember he was an average local prop, so what qualifications has he to coach a premiership side, just asking? Obviously after listening to his interview tonight he put blame on individual errors but taking no responsibility for his and the other coaches lack of ability to coach our side to the levels we hope for, sadly he’s not good enough to coach a premiership side. Time for him to move on please Bruce.

That performance shows the problems are deeply rooted throughout the club.

Seriously disappointed to hear Lilley come out with the Hoops rhetoric.

Feel for the young lads put to the slaughter and like Coochie states you wonder how their confidence will recover.

I do not have a clue how Ed Griffiths is going to suggest how to sort this mess out - we look punch drunk as a club.

Hatley was interviewed last week after the leic game. Spoke quite well I thought.

Lots of clubs allow junior members of the coaching staff to lead during these weeks , do the interviews etc.

Totally understand your frustration, we are a total rabble who are very badly coached.

I think if a player as committed as Dunn can lose the will to compete it just shows how little the players believe in the management.

Dunn has been almost laughably poor for the last 8 months, a liability.

God knows what is going on but maybe a good barometer of things as was excellent a few seasons ago and has gone backwards rapidly. I will get in trouble for picking out individual players as it is a result of the coaching but i would put beno, stuart, ewels, ellis etc in same box- going backwards when they should be coming into their peak.

Jonny Wilkinson's first international was a 76-0 defeat to Australia. I think there were 3 other future world cup winners in that team. I'm not saying it's a good thing to be beaten like that, but young players do need to learn what it takes, and you need to test yourself against players who are better than you.

I started supporting Bath in 1992 and my interest has ebbed and flowed in that time like every human interest.

I have spent the last 20 years mostly cross about under performance (other than 2013-2015). This season is not under performance, we are simply SPECTACULARLY bad at rugby compared to our opposition.

Consistency of coaching only works if the coaches have any ideas what they are talking about.

Most on here were happy with our selection in isolation inc myself. Rest guys mentally and physically after a rough few months, minimise risk of injury to players we will need whilst internationals are away, give game time to those who needed it. Sprinkling of experience in the pack in dunn, spencer and coetzee.

I didn't expect us to he that bad obviously! I was thinking a 20 point loss and some positives from a handful putting their hand up.

Anyone must be better than the existing management, they select the coaches so must take ultimate responsibility but they won't, we will find a sacrificial lamb or two and nothing will change.

I think the culture may be too soft at Farleigh. I don't feel the players demand enough of each other, the coaches demand enough of each other etc etc. There is lots of nice rhetoric with little substance.

For the right character that is a useful learning experience.

It is a lesson that they need to improve a lot and rapidly. Hopefully they are given the tools to have a chance I.e. some better coaches primarily.

Clearly he is not a capable forwards coach and way out of his depth. Nice guy but not up to coaching a premiership side.

No they don't. That's what they did in the bye week before the Sarries match. What they need to do is have two weeks of intensive coaching, focusing specifically on defence, the set piece and handling skills.

Hang on - £70 a ticket (ladies would want to be under cover) family of 6 - that’s over £400 before beer and food.
And the promise of entertainment?

I think you’ve put your finger on it. There’s a relaxed air amongst the coaches. They never sound overly concerned & you just know that nothing will change from one week to the next. If very little changes we will sleep walk into the Championship in a couple of years & not get out of it.

Bath will not win a single game this season because their pack cannot even get to 40:60, never mind parity.

When the commentators start talking about the number of tries Bath have conceded and the number of points each game you know that this is going to be around Bath's neck all season....................now it is 500 points, now it is 600 points now it is a record number of conceded points.............will they concede 1,700 points or even more.....

I was disappointed in Worbuoys........who I thought was supposed to be really good?

If these youngsters are “really good” would we not expect a whole lot more out of them? Think of the England football team. Were those 19/20 year olds embarrassed yesterday by the older more experienced opposition? No way! Do you remember some years ago in a cup competition when Bath were surprisingly outplayed by a young, inexperienced Harlequins? It wasn’t just age & inexperience that lost us the games yesterday. I’m 100% sure that those guys could play a whole lot better under the right coaching team. If we have no confidence from Messrs Hatley, Lilley & Hooper why should the players? Let’s hope this Sarries guy does his job speedily but I hope he has a ruthless, no holds barred approach & Bruce acts upon his recommendation sooner rather than later.

Can't sleep after watching that shower, I'm emotional, angry, upset.

As a Bath fan I have gotten use to not winning every game, that is the way of things in modern rugby, we are not the all blacks, but seriously that was awful to watch. Can't blame Glaws for not entering into the spirit of the competition, they are a Pro rugby club wanting to win a game at home against a west country rival.

Players were sacrificial lambs to the slaughter. No Hooper speaks volumes to me, he is DOR therefore responsible. Lilley's post match interview was a joke, individual errors, blah blah blah! WTF......Glad he found it amusing.

I am not a season ticket holder, thankfully, but I will not be paying my hard earned money to watch Bath under the current regime. Not a penny will be spent on shirts or pencil sharpeners for my kids. Are you listening Bruce?????

Things have to change from the top down. We are rotten and fully deserve to be in the position we are in for the complacency we have put up with for too long. I think we need to be relegated to focus minds and cut out the dead wood.

A lot of those players have barely played any rugby over the last 18 months. They will learn more from last night and the week they had in training knowing they were going to play in the game than yet again not actually playing a match of rugby

Now all the coaches and players should have an intense training week to try to stop the rot.

Poor old coetzee kind of sums us up.

Sign him and he gets a serious injury. Gets covid. Is in bad condition. Plays a game and is dropped. Starts a game and lasts about 2 mins. Comes back last night and lasts 20 mins.

Looked like maybe ankle ligaments? May be totally wrong but hopefully was and could be back in a month? From experience it's v painful but not long term.

I do still think he is a v good player and will be an excellent signing but just encapsulates everything going wrong. He won't have played a meaningful game whilst we really needed him during the autumn internationals.

Agree on richards- if managed well will be top class.

I went in with similar thoughts- lose by 20-30 points. Not a disaster and some players put their hand up. Hmmmm

Pretty sure Coetzee was on crutches in the background during Morgan's motm interview. It looked like he had one of those grey plastic protective boots on his left lower leg so as you say, suggests something ankle related.

Fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery, Jaco.

I think the kids have learnt that they have a lot of work to do if they want to be professional rugby players and I'm not sure that is a bad lesson to learn

Don’t agree. These kids will lose a lot of confidence from that drubbing and some careers will be ruined as a result.

+1

If I was an agent for the youngsters I’d be trying to get them transferred to a club with ambition before it’s too late.

I think agents getting their slice of the pie by getting as many of their players out the prem is their overriding concern currently.

The path is pretty clear to see for the younger players as they see the likes of richards, staddon, merigan, bailey, mojo getting game time in meaningful matches following behind the likes of bayliss, reid , tdg.

The issue is the standard of coaching they get to improve them as players in the senior set up. I agree that is a concern and could drive a few away

Oh joy, Coetzee looks knee crocked like the other half of the squad. Walking off at least.

Saw this incident on TV and I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a red card. Wouldn’t have changed the final outcome, but the score might have been lower.

Also surprised to hear the muppets in the crowd booing the decision.

Bris fan in peace.

Firstly I thought it was seriously poor form and totally lacking leadership from any of your more senior coaches (Charteris, Hatley) to put Lilley out to face the press.

Secondly I thought it was seriously poor form for Lilley to then blame the players - again totally lacking leadership and individual responsibility, or collective responsibility on the part of the coaches.

Something is seriously rotten at your club, from top to bottom, and the expectations of everyone associated with the club seem to be getting lower every week.

My fear for you all is that it won’t change as long as BC is at the helm with his ego to massage.

Agreed BathBlue, as a long term fan I can take a Bath loss or two, or three.. but to not even be close to competitive parity is getting pretty hard to stomach every week. As a fan all i can do is vote with my feet and not give Bath any match revenue or club shop purchases, until some action looks like it has been taken.

To that end, i'm surprised that despite all Bruce Craig's business acumen that he is allowing this shambles to go on so long without taking any unilateral action. The Griffiths report will likely be about as effective as a Tory parliamentary standards investigation.

There can be no hope of any sudden Lazarus rise from this level of demonstrated performance even if some individual errors (shame on you Lilley!) were removed. We have serious systemic problems, awful coaching structures and widespread coaching inexperience (Hatley's stock has done a proper Lehman Bros since his return). Coupled with very poor on-field leadership and buy-in from senior pro's, and this is just the playing side of the house!

My only ray of hope has been the performance and attitude of some of our younger pro's (Bayliss, Reid, Bailey, TdG, Ojomoh, Muir). They deserve to be around some senior pro's that look like they at least care.

Charlieboa is spot on with how regressive our senior pro performances have been. I cannot identify the characters in the squad that will grab this by the scruff of the neck and galvanise the squad. And if that is what Bayfield et al means by looking inward at club character getting you through these dark times then I think we are in serious doggy do-dah.

Sadly I think Faletau will be the first of many exiting stage right for another club environment. I just hope our youngsters don't follow suit before some decisive action is taken.

C'MON BATH!!!, give me something, nay anything to cheer. It's almost Christmas and the cure for Tiny Tim's polio is a hundred years away.

Fair comments TJ though not convinced Bruce's ego is the problem. I doubt his ego likes us being appalling at rugby... not sure I get the link but Bruce gets his share of stick on here and other forums so could well be part of the problem.

For me the culture from dor, to coaches , to players just isn't demanding enough. There has to be more drive from within. I think its easy to kid yourself you are doing fine in the wrong culture. As you say expectations are so low.

I actually think whilst horribly painful this is shining a light on the fact we just aren't good enough in any aspect of coaching and playing. Hoping naively that it must bring about positive change. Other than making noises about homegrown focus the rest of the rhetoric from the club seems very bland and empty- I don't really have a clue what our identity is in terms of style or direction of travel.

Disappointing result, but I think many have gone over the top on some posts.
Glos were fully loaded , they were bigger more experienced and played like a team who had had more than a few run throughs at training. so a win by a large margin was always going to be on the cards considering the inexperienced and lightweight (literally I mean kgs.) team we put out.

None of those lads will be psychologically damaged by that result. They will be disappointed and maybe angry, but as young pro's will be driven on to improve and take on board what they need to work on individually to progress. They wouldn't be where they are now if they were so fragile a tonking will somehow "break" them.

Also I don't agree with all the comments about Lilley, I'm not sure about his coaching ability I assume he's a half decent forwards coach. However to be put in charge of the cup squad with only probably a couple of training sessions , then for anyone to expect the team of kids (given talented kids) to perform anywhere near well enough to compete against that Glos team is just not realistic.
That is not his fault and it wouldn't have mattered who was the the scapegoat..er head coach.

Regarding criticism of his post match comments , i'm not sure what he's expected to say "I apologise/I resign/Its all my fault , I have no idea what I'm doing or we had no time to train we were under prepared and light weight" .
He was correct there were a lot of individual handling errors knock-ons, poor passes etc. He's right the players have to look to them selves regarding those individual errors , it seemed to me they were keen to get things going they were sometimes trying to get passes away and offloads that were not on, getting isolated etc. But that identification comes with experience of playing at a higher level and so is a learning point for them individually as he pointed out. It didn't suggest to me he was blaming them for the lose though. Like the players he's not used to that level and to have a mike stuck under your nose after that game is not something I think anyone could handle or come out of well.

Regarding the tactics/game plan well sorry what can you do in a couple of training sessions.. build a solid defence against their scrum ,strong line out and driving maul, develop transition plays and set plays. That's just not going to happen .
Don't get me wrong there's something not right at Bath , what that is and how to fix it who knows..
The team and Lilley were on a hiding to nothing.

Back to basics for me. You have to earn the right to be fancy and we are a long way off that.

Stick it up the jumper and grind out a game for the full 80mins.

'stick it up the jumper and grind out a game' is not really an option when your tight five are bullied all over the park, particularly at scrum and maul.

To be fair to Glos their rest week meant I think that the 1st XV wouldn't have played a game for 3(?) weeks before their next Prem fixture. I suspect they'll put out a very different side in the next fixture in this competition. (In case it seems strange that I'd be fair to Glos I had a look at the Shedweb's take on the match and thought there were a lot of pretty reasoned, fair-minded posts!).

I really think that some of the comments on here are way over the top in terms of criticism of the team, coaches and management. Nobody can be happy with the way our 1st xv have been performing this season but this is a totally different competition, and a competition that is normally used as a stepping stone for Academy players within the clubs. It was a fixture that had to be fulfilled. Should Hooper have played more of his 1st team and raised the possibility of more injuries in an already depleted squad? I can hear the howls of anger on this board if that had happened? What was Hooper doing playing our best players in a second rate competition etc etc etc? We chose as a club, and rightly in my opinion, to play our youngsters. Gloucester took the opposite view, a total mismatch from start to finish. I believe that our youngsters went out onto the field to give of their best and I think that they will have learned more than many of the Gloucester players. Once Glos achieved forward superiority, did they learn much from their rolling maul tries? I doubt it.
I do not know Lilley's abilities as a coach but I do think there has to be some degree of clearer thought required by some posters on here. We are having a terrible season but continual negative comments and calls for multiple sackings cannot inspire confidence in anyone and certainly not in the youngsters of the club.
If our 1st xv had been playing well and we hammered a group of Gloucester academy players, would we really have achieved much? I don't think so.

Totally agree. Suggestions that Lilley was a patsy set up to fail are ridiculous ,this arrangement would have been made months ago before anyone had an inkling of the Gloucester team and what message would have been sent to Lilley and the young players by replacing him at the last moment with a 'senior' coach! In pointing out the cost of individual mistakes Lilley is not throwing young players to the wolves but giving them the respect of treating them like the senior players they were last night, was he supposed to say the mistakes didn't matter as they were young and the mismatch unfair. With such a mismatch in terms of the size and experience of the teams this was not a game to use as an example of coaching failures to my mind.

No one's pretending there weren't individual errors, there were, loads. But Lilley also claimed no responsibility to the coaching team at all, there was no solidarity.

Eddie Jones might just about be able to get away with that, Mark Lilley does not.

I didn't watch the game, but shipping 11 tries is not all on individual errors, other things must have been wrong. That will be a number of things from inexperience to coaching and everything in-between.

If that is how the coaches see the game and take no responsibility, then it's no wonder we are where we are.

I get that players, once they get on the pitch, are responsible but the coaches have to set them up to be able to perform.

I think our excitimg new style will be very good but it needs a competitive front 5 and that's what we don't have. Fix that and a lot of our problems will disappear.

Completely agree tom.

I think it would have been potentially a 4 week gap between games for their senior players given the bye week last week.

Their isn't anything fundamentally wrong with the set up of the comp imho, we just got very unlucky that it served our purposes to rest loads and give young guys a go, whilst glos felt they couldn't have all their frontline players having no game for a month.

All the other games so far have looked very competitive between 3rd string/academy teams.

There is a difference though between what you say to individuals behind closed doors and what you say to the public and press. Hard to know what to say really but don't think blaming individual errors would do the players confidence much good. Could have just said we were beaten by a stronger and more experienced team and as a team things didn't go as we would have liked - something like that.

Nope

Had he said that he really would have got stick

Far better would have been something along the lines of: as a coaching team we need to go back and look at how we prepared our young team for this match. It was always going to be a tough match for a largely development side against a very strong gloucester team but we, the coaches, take responsibility for that scoreline. They're a great bunch of young players to work with and they will learn from this and come back stronger for it blah blah

When you get stuffed by 70-odd, off the back of a season in which you haven't won a game, there is no good way of addressing the media.

If the coaches do actually have 'responsibility for that scoreline' then the only possible response is to resign.

Our coaching team is very, very obviously not adequate for the task. However, my overwhelming feeling after watching that game was that Tom Dunn or McConnoghie, or one of the few senior players should have gone into the changing room afterwards and ranted, 'right, 7 o clock tomorrow morning, training pitch. Fk the coaches. Let's go and sort a few basic things out ourselves. I don't want any more days like this in my rugby career. Let's go smash it out of our systems'.

At the end of the day, you can have a game on Saturday without any coaches. But you can't have one without players. They are the ones who have got to step it up.

I agree with both of those statements Opti but, for me there is a least worse way of addressing the media if not a good one and sometimes it could be very different to what is said back on the training park after the match

The players, I'm sure all want to "step up", it is the role of the coaches to motivate and help them to see where and how they can do that. That's the responsibility I didn't hear in Lilley's words post match
