BACKS TO THE WALL: BATH v HARLEQUINS
Muir: fit again?
By PG Tips
January 26 2022
Baths’ backs will, inevitably, be pressed back against the wall when facing Harlequins on Friday evening. This week the coaches have more to worry about than a dire run of results, new injuries against Leinster further depleting already stretched resources. Any further cases of Covid in the camp or restrictions on England player participation will leave Bath dangerously close to a “last man standing” selection. If Bath are able to fulfil the fixture, survival has to be the prime motivator. Resilience and morale will be sorely tested.
The tie represents a contrast of current fortunes. Last season’s champions are beginning to flourish -they currently stand 3rd in the table with a happy knack of winning tight games, often with outrageous ambition or luck. When a team like Harlequins are on a roll everything seems to go their way. In their recent win over Castres Quins sprang from the wall to fightback, several times. As they probed for the final thrust to snatch the game, the officials appeared to have their backs to the play – missing a booming forward pass from Smith, then awarding a fortunate stoppage time try to Dombrandt.
Bath on other hand, must be wondering when they are going to feel the kiss of lady luck. A spirited and defiant opening 15 minutes against Leinster is the latest example – all that effort and bravery serving only to cost the loss of 2 international forwards to HIAs. Later Redpath dropped the ball with the line at his mercy and while Hugo Keenan benefited from the current fashion for officials to approve forward passes, Ben Spencer was denied a penalty try when taken out by 2 opponents after chipping ahead in the Leinster 22. The cover, or bounce of the ball might well have thwarted him, but that is the sort of 50-50 incident that is frequently awarded to a dominant side. The injuries continued to pile up in the final battering minutes and Bath are now at risk of having to rely on Academy players at prop, loose forward and fullback.
None of those misfortunes contradicts the fact that Bath failed to capitalise on early pressure against Leinster because they could not produce the clinical finish at the key moment. That lack of surgical precision has blunted the efforts of Dave Williams to bring snap and variety to the attack (evidence of which was seen even in last Saturday’s thrashing). That failing, combined with well documented defensive naivety, has been the tale of the season and root cause of several close call defeats.
Inevitably Bath’s selection will have a patchwork look about it. The arrival of Nathan Hughes as temporary loan cover at least offers some experience for the back row. He must surely start. Coetzee, Dunn, Joseph and Muir are all in contention to play this weekend and hopefully, all will be fit. Taulupe Faletau, Joe Cokanasiga, Danny Cipriani and Tian Schoeman should all be nearing a return to action soon. Of these Cipriani and Schoeman are sorely needed with both Redpath and Bailey potential absentees on 6 Nations duty.
Despite all the woes and challenges and the humiliation of Leinster’s 10 try masterclass, several of Bath’s younger players grew in experience and reputation last weekend. If they can remain fit and motivated, the future of Bath rugby is surely much brighter than it’s current parlous state. The other bright element in all the gloom is the enduring loyalty and passion of the fan base, complimented both by pundits and Leinster fans last weekend. As Stephen Jones put it in the Sunday Times:
“It may seem odd to mention it after this, but there is a huge and successful club in there somewhere. It is high time that someone rediscovered it.” Let’s hope that he is right and it is discovered soon.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Cordwell, Du Toit, Rae, W Spencer, McNally (Capt.), Ellis, Coetzee, Hughes. B Spencer, Ojomoh. Muir, Redpath, Joseph, Rokodoguni. Atkins.
Replacements: Dunn, Vaughan, Verden, Richards, Merigan. Simpson, Clark, Hamer-Webb.
Harlequins: Garcia Botta, Walker, Collier, Lewies (Capt.), Lamb, Lawday, Kenningham, Tuilani. Steele, Allan. Lynagh, Esterhuizen, Jones, Murley. Green.
Replacements: Gray, Els, Louw, Symons, Wallace. Gjaltema, Benson, R Chisholm.

Question for those that know but I thought the Eng squad members returned to the clubs this weekend.
It's typical of our season that our one standing fly-half gets called up, as good a prospect as he is, completely out of the blue. I'd imagine Redpath will start at 10, as he did a couple of weeks ago in La Roch.

Now in Honolulu
Maybe looking at something like:
Atkins, roko, jj, mojo, muir, redpath, spencer, cordwell, du toit, rae, spencer, mcnally, richards, ellis, hughes.
Bench: vaughan, doughty, verden, williams, coetzee, fox, clark, ghw
??
Not awful but certainly not hopeful of getting anything out of the game! Some positions where we ate down to 4th/5th choice
I'd be tempted to play even Roko at 15 over Atkins, as he just hasn't played any top-level rugby in years. Good news Spencer (W) is fit, so at least we should get a little go forward. Without Obano, Boyce, Stuart, Dunn etc, we're lacking carriers, so Spencer, Hughes (lol) and Coetzee need big games.
Most interested to see if Coetzee stays fit and makes an impact. Other than that, not much to get excited about, unfortunately, and think Quins, even without Marler, Domb and Smith, have far too much.
Jonathan Joseph will make his 150th Bath Rugby appearance on Friday night when Harlequins visit the Rec.
The 30-year-old debuted in a 21-0 away win over Newcastle Falcons in 2013 and has been a key member of the Bath backline ever since, earning England and British & Irish Lions honours.
On that cold, rainy day at Kingston Park, Semesa Rokoduguni was also in the starting XV and he returns to mark Joseph’s milestone, taking his place at full-back with Gabriel Hamer-Webb and Will Muir on the wings.
A position he played for the best of an hour at Northampton Saints in December, Academy centre Max Ojomoh stands in at fly-half due to the unavailability of Orlando Bailey (international duty), Danny Cipriani, Tian Schoeman and Tom de Glanville (all injured).
There is a lot of experience inside him with Ben Spencer continuing at scrum-half while Cameron Redpath will be hoping to impress from inside centre ahead of a potential Calcutta Cup clash with England next week.
Nathan Hughes adds size and power to the pack after arriving from Bristol Bears on a short-term loan in the week. The Number 8 boasts a considerable amount of experience and joins Tom Ellis and Ewan Richards in the back row.
Josh McNally will captain the side from lock alongside Mike Williams and D’Arcy Rae is back at tighthead for the Blue, Black and White.
Following his first European start last weekend, Arthur Cordwell will take the one jersey for the first time in Premiership action. Jacques du Toit completes the pack.
On the bench, Jaco Coetzee has recovered from his injury sustained back in November while Kieran Verden is also named in the 23 after some game time with Hartpury.

If it was just down to the quality/fitness of players, it would be simple. Ignoring the elephant in the room again. Who just who is going to come up with a gameplan that works (that would be a first) and the appropriate training?

Mike Williams over Spencer. I wonder if we're on the hunt for two locks.
Sounds harsh but wouldn't be upset if both went given their disciplinary and injury records respectively.
For now I would have spencer over williams everytimr personally.... sounds like both may not be 100%
Other than that I would rather see him than Williams in the XV.
If we do not stop Wallace this game will turn ugly - Tom Foley officiating - not a great fan TBH.

Think that the comms said he had had Covid as well. Some people take a lot longer to recover from Covid than others. No way of predicting return to fitness.

I have a fiver on a Redpath brace at 80-1 and Jack Walker (Boooo) the same at 14-1. I suspect that Esterhuizen may get a couple tbh (but odds rubbish). Hughes brace at 33-1 is a tempter but think that the Quins forwards may be too strong for him to have a decent platform.

Roko still world class, mind.
I think Cordwell has done really well, as has Hamer Webb. The youngsters continue to impress, but the mistakes are absolute killers.

In all honesty Quins not that good either

That final minute sums us up. No composure, extremely poor basic skills, a team in the image of our DoR ?
Why on earth is it always the DOR who gets the blame for everything on field rather than the head coach. Ludicrous,
… which kind of makes our ineptitude all the more frustrating!
On the upside, Nathan Hughes has looked dialled in at least. Aside from the play while the clock is on, I noticed he was gee-ing up and encouraging Cordwell when he had the string of scrum penalties conceded and when Cordwell forced the penalty from Walker after a carry. After some of the questions about his commitment, it's great to see him being obviously so engaged towards the younger players.

Oh come on. The whole culture, mentality, character of the team on the playing side comes from the DoR. I think Bath of been massively patient with Hooper but I can’t see my remote possibility of Bath getting to where we need to be with old ‘eye ore’ setting the tone.

Nathan Hughes is a revelation. Hope we can keep him until the end of the season at least on this form
Good score from Muir, but how many penalties in the red zone before Quins get warned or a yellow?
Hughes has been brilliant.
Horse has taken both tries very well. 20 mins to stay ahead an get a win
Finally somethings went right, even if plenty went against them.
Tough call between Hughes and Ben Spencer for MotM
I feel like despite a lot of mistakes and errors, we were the better team today. It felt like there was an actual strategy to our game today, whether that was targeting Green or our control of the game in the middle third.

So by that logic Hoops has to get all of credit for the culture, mentality and character of the team tonight as it all comes form the DOR. Well done Hoops I say

We should have won by a lot more, mistakes cost us but players thoroughly deserved the win and I hope that the supporters watching it live stayed to show their appreciation, as they really put their bodies on the line.
Hughes was very good, makes the negativity towards his signing seem silly. We needed a big ball carrier and he did that and more. Coetzee also showed his class, glad to finally get to watch him in a bath shirt. Everyone played well, but I thought our pack and Roko were stand outs.

Of course he has to take his share of responsibility for how things have unfolded, especially in allowing this coaching group to continue for so long but the direct responsibility for our failures on the field of play rests primarily with the head coach. Anyway we can all rejoice in what turned out to be a thoroughly deserved win tonight.
Felt pretty emotional at the end tbh.
Let's just enjoy that feeling of a good , well earned win.

A dogged win - well done Bath! Thought everyone stood up admirably tonight.
Nice for JJ on his 150th. The Rec was buzzing again
Cordwell take a bow son. He's made the grade.
Hughes was immense.
Quins kept committing the same penalty for holding in the tackle over and over and over. We really should've been out of sight - but we'll take a 4pt win any day.
Thought Mojo had a great game at FH and was mixing it well with passing and kicking, Roko was a rock and Gabe’s tackle on their winger I am looking forward to seeing on the replay.
Wonderful stuff Bath especially as the raucous Quin fans were not so raucous in the second half!
Totally agree - as long as your goal is an underpowered scrum under-height lineout and playing with 14 men for at least part of the match.[/quote]

As I said, Williams ahead of Spencer was the correct call. Nobody worked harder.
Yes, Quins were understrength. Yes, we got some lucky calls especially in the scrum in the first half. Yes, we looked like some of the players had barely met.
But.
We fought. We played as a team. We tried to play rugby (and succeeded most of the time). We were positive in thought and deed. And, almost as importantly as those things, we won. I was very, very proud of the boys.
Horse was great, Roko a revelation at 15, Spenno was a rock and the collective front row survived an auto-da-fe with honours.
But one player demonstrated what we've been missing this season through ill luck and injury. Nathan Hughes played like a man possessed. Suddenly rugby is a much easier game when your 8 is breaking the hard yards gain line on a regular basis. Space and time open up and the sight of someone like Andre Esterhuizen sitting on his backside looking confused gives everyone a huge lift.
My MotM - Nathan Hughes. If we can keep him playing like that, we'll win a lot more games this season.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu
When you first took the lead at 13-12, I said to a Bath supporting work colleague that I think you’ve got this as there seemed to be a change of feeling from hope to belief around the whole place.
I’ve always liked the saying (I think attributed to Arsene Wenger) that confidence take months to grow and seconds to die (or words to that effect). That win will do wonders for the side. Turning up for training next week the players will have a bounce in their step. Well done on your victory, it may just give your side that tiny bit of belief that can grow and grow.

Agree to disagree! Hats off though, he didn't get binned and had a solid game.
Good job collier went off early otherwise would have looked a horrid call to not have your best scrummaging lock helping cordwell.
None of the “60 minutes so take off player X despite him dominating his opponent” rubbish seen too often.
Was this pre-planned or proper off the cuff “play what’s going on in front of you” stuff by the coaches?
Whatever it should be applauded for not disrupting the team 👍

We definitely got a slice of fortune when Collier went off, but still so proud of the work put in.

With confidence so low within the squad, it would’ve been easy to mess up (knock on, go off feet etc) and give Quins a final shot, but closing it out with such little fuss was a real show of temperament and character.
My favourite moment, aside from the final whistle, was Hughes nailing their 15 in the middle of the pitch leaving him in a heap.
Hughes could become our next Leroy Houston. I just loved how he took us forward and the tackle on Esterhuizen was worth the admission.
He was geeing up the crowd and was just really enjoying playing for us and at the Rec!
I smiled all the way back to the coach, all the way home and I’m still smiling today.

I have rarely seen anyone take such a buffeting as Tyrone Green did tonight but he showed no effects whatsoever & played a major part in their late try. What is this guy made of???

Lots to analyse for next week, but for now, just enjoy yourselves, let the pressure off, and have fun.

Just to add- the way we controlled the 90 seconds after the final restart was mighty impressive. Spencer and the forwards controlled the situation so very well, and were alot calmer than I was!
With confidence so low within the squad, it would’ve been easy to mess up (knock on, go off feet etc) and give Quins a final shot, but closing it out with such little fuss was a real show of temperament and character.
Absolutely
Stark contrast to me, a nervous wreck that couldn't risk picking up beer glass until final whistle
Mind you the ref helped by making the kicker go right out to the touch line not where he was trying to kick from. It was at that point I thought he could well miss this.
Every little helps in the rebuild process.

Hmm your last comment PG - said in hope rather than expectation?
If it was just down to the quality/fitness of players, it would be simple. Ignoring the elephant in the room again. Who just who is going to come up with a gameplan that works (that would be a first) and the appropriate training?
Not sure which elephant it was annie (unless of course you were referring to Nathan Hughes on the pitch), but somebody came up with the plan and it (just about!) worked!
PG
Some great high points, Nathan Hughes hit on Tyrone Green was a game changing moment. Met him afterwards he was really pumped, Huge guy!
With no kicking from 10 and Spencer’s box kicks they were confused in the backs, as we ran loads of ball at them Redpath is difficult to stop but hard to see why, he wriggles out of tackles but Roko was stunning, his catching and a few hits were perfect.
Finally Will Muir, still had lots to do for the tries, when he went down with cramp the lads were all doing stretches on him with no idea of it was cramp or a broken leg! They didn’t care.

The first 5mins was heart in mouth stuff, but the way the Pack fought back was impressive.
As has been said above, Cordwell and Rae had HUGE games! Watching Rae do an SAS roll to stop a bouncing ball going into touch and pass it back to a teammate did make me smile.
I also saw a tonne of leadership on display from JJ and Mojo which I didn't expect to see it.
Plus Hamer-Webb's work rate was massive!
Designed in Scotland | Made in the West Country

Yesterday the commentators talked about Quins "big names" having to stand up and lead and we saw Care finish such a distant second to Spencer in play and leadership that Aesop could have written a fable about it and Ojomo, a twelve playing at ten, arguably out-influence Esterhuizen who is undoubtedly one of the best in the League and that's before you get to the performances evergreen Roko, Hughes and others. As many have said on here above all I think you saw a performance of character. Far from perfect, sometimes a bit fortunate but the spirit shone through.
Next week should be interesting as I think that might be the win you needed to kick start things. I'm looking forward to it.
PS, please play Cips not Ojomo!

Listening on 5 Live with Guscott and Ashton commenting and a brilliant blow by blow account by sorrycan'trememberhername woman - all a bit "nail bitey" but even just listening - towards the end it was clear Bath players never gave up. Did Nathan Hughes make the difference? Teamwork from all of them. Anyway, we won. I shed a tear or two in relief. End of. Quins must be in shock.
Take a bow whoever worked out the gameplan of how to outwit Quins!
That's not to discredit the likes of Bayliss and Underwood who have played 8 this year, it just shows what we have missed and actually might have made a critical difference in several of those close score games such as Bristol, Sale etc

Your current season shows what a turnround can look like. Good luck.

Cordwell, Doughty, Richards, Ojomoh, Redpath, Hamer-Webb.
Add to those other young guns who have done well this season Fox, Bailey, de Glanville, plus other more established players still young -Underhill, Bayliss, Reid and some promising talent pushing behind them -Staddon, Carr-Smith, Butt, Goss.
If we can hold onto and develop those players, preferably guided by a core of seasoned pros, there are plenty of reasons for optimism.
First, lets make the best we can of this season.

Where do you find a pub showing the rugby on a Friday night MtT ? Around our way it’s all pop videos or football on a Friday eve.
Some moans (as always) from the Quins fans about missing players and the ref, but all teams are going to have huge lists of injured/unavailable players, it’s simply the nature of the league, and as the blessed Rob Baxter says you should be far enough ahead for the refs vagaries not to matter.
The talent available to Bath, particularly the youngsters, is phenomenal. Get the coaching right and whilst they may not make an international career, lots of your guys have what it takes in spades.
Also great to see big Nathan playing a big game again. Perhaps he needs to reboot via a change of club on a regular basis! Or perhaps being an elder statesman suits him mentally. He was a revelation bearing in mind his poor form this season to date.
Finally , as mentioned earlier , the Prem needs strong clubs with tradition like Tigers you and Saints. Let’s hope last night was not a flash in the pan.

Neal Hatley's interview was interesting when he said the scrum hadn't had time to practice set pieces, did he mean this particular pack or in general?
Imagine there has been an element of wrapping the props in cotton wool given how few are available.
On the topic of hats I thought it was classy to send mccall the clubs best wishes before the game and to say he is inspired by the professionalism of the coaches who wont be here next season.

Because when you're bottom, or in a rut, even the officials conspire against you.
I wonder what this season would have looked like if Tempest had been even half competent in the Bristol match at the start of the season.

He mentioned it at the members meeting as well. High injuries doesn't just affect who you can pick from but how you train. You can't scrum 8 v 8 or practice maul defence etc etc. It's highly damaging across the board.

TMO had a look, but just to see if it was obvious, not an official check, so only 1-2 full speed replays.
If they had officially checked, the shadow provides enough doubt that you'd probably go with the ref's decision anyway.

Regretfully the next frame is covered by a limb but the downward movement suggests there is no doubt about the grounding! It is no consequence except Quins got a match point that they shouldn’t have!

Yes I agree, it has to be seen in context, conservation of momentum means the ball can’t just hover cm above the ground. As WT says they didn’t look and got it wrong.
TMO should be checking all the time rather than when asked, there aren’t that many scoring moments in a game.

Everything else: Fabulous atmos,
NH great - Josh B v quick and skilled but not an 8 - NH shows what we have been missing please please keep him.
Roko is just Class, always has been.
Spencer ditto, different team when he’s playing.
Arthur a hero. W. Spencer a brute - lovely.
Also nice touch on Gabe’s shirt - ‘Hammer’-Webb.

What I saw was a lot of dog, a lot of passion, and a fair dollop of luck, all three of which have been missing so far this season.
I thought that with Mojo playing flyhalf behind a pack that looked like a liability based on the first couple of scrums that we were in a lot of trouble. But they proved me wrong.
Young Max played with freedom and confidence to suggest he will be an England player within the next year or so, though not at 10. His passing and tackling are different gravy, and his miss passes are a valuable weapon indeed.
Nathan Hughes isn’t infected by the woes of our squad, so he played positively, completely disregarding collective form. The adage goes that form is temporary, class is permanent, and I expected this when we signed him. Quality player, though I think it unlikely he’ll stay beyond the summer as the rumours are Irish have him in their sights.
Anyway, small shoots of positivity. Our immediate mission should be to avoid the ignominy of coming bottom of the pile. It’s a shame we can’t rest players for Europe as we a so wracked by injuries, but I wouldn’t spend too much time worrying about that competition nevertheless.
Onwards and upwards!

When you have over 20 players out yourselves and have had zero luck all season though it was nice to get a break.
Lots of positives-
Cordwell- struggled against collier but handled kerrod nicely and went full 80. Hats off young man
Rae- early days still in judging rae but I think he has something about him
Hughes- all been said. having a massive carrier, tackler and personality is exactly we needed
Coetzee- so pleased he got 25 mins under the belt with no injury. Think with any luck he will be a v good player for us
Spencer- one defensive error but as normal class
Mojo- just love him. Varied his game better than I imagined he would
Redpath- come back so well sadly I think Scotland would be crazy to not involve him
Hamer- webb- hope he gets some more games this season. Has the raw material and attitude to go far
Roko stood in well at 15. congrats to JJ- pretty clear he is loved and respected at the club so nice to see a smile on his face and a win on his 150th game.
Thought we saw it out with surprising composure for a squad that must be low on confidence.
Actually felt really emotional at the end- I think it was at the final whistle I realised how much losing and losing and losing had actually got to me this season.

Do seagulls get commentary when viewing from the their west stand vantage point Joe?

The players seemed to be rejuvenated after last weekends embarrassment.
Thought special praise should go out to Du Toit he carried and put himself about brilliantly thought he totally eclipsed Walker and Mike Williams had another good game and the touch from Rae for Muirs second try was class.
In truth we dominated and game Well done boys let's build on it.

Slightly gratified - in a mean-spirited way - that Muir went through a pretty feeble attempt at a tackle by Jack Walker, especially as they dragged us by making him captain. That try could have been the tipping point of the game.
Thought that too, has to be remembered he also got past two other failed attempts before scoring, not just power either as a step involved he's an absolute bargain of a winger. Ahead of AW for me.
Second try just had a really funny aftermath for me, everyone crowding round grabbing a leg and bending toes treating assumed cramp. No-one knew if it was tendons, ligaments, greenstick fracture, whatever just bend something you have seen meds do on the tele and get him working again. Typical rugby scenario.

Walker never got into any position to make a tackle possible but it was Muir's instinctive 'ali shufflle' like footwork to bamboozle Greene that was absolute class

So Greene got smashed by Hughes, out foxed by Muir and sky bombed by Spencer not the best day for him really, though he did put Hammond in for his try to be fair.

Especially impressive that we won without our club captain and England 2nd row. Hmmmm
Desperately looking for a “like” button for this post.
As you say a decent player and durable. Bit of a hooper really and would class both of them as poor man's borthers.
There are others more convincing though for England at international level.
We can also question if he is the type of leader required in Bath’s current predicament. Those who can remember that far back would probably prefer a Jonathan Humphries approach.

Still can recall JH, at the end of a particularly longer than usual fraught scrum, suddenly losing his contact lense and having to kneel for a long moment or two, and examine the grass carefully to retrieve.

But it is possible that the captaincy is weighing him down a bit. I would imagine it's been pretty much impossible to compose pre-match and half-time speeches latterly, with elephants in every corner of the room - and so maybe a new voice, with a clean'ish sheet, was able to say things a little more credibly on Friday evening?
