CC Jaco Coetzee wasn't here in Jan 2019 - was it Jan 21?
In terms of academy Nahum Merigan, Frankie Read and George Worboys all extended last month.
Blimey, Will Stuart and Charlie Ewels possibly up then unless they signed something more recently?

I think all of the Jan 2019 undisclosed contracts will go to the end of next year - someone mentioned that Boyce has another year on here (I think somewhere in the rumours thread maybe?), Mike Williams has indicated on instagram that he's got another year and someone on the Worcester board is saying that Stuart has another year.

Sounded like a done deal in trp but who knows.
Currently contracted 10s bailey and worboys only!

Hoops has spoken alot about availability.
I guess faletau going and watson potentially going starts to address that.
Will stuart is excellent, I think the issue is the drop off from him.
Ewels I would be v surprised to see leave.
I do wonder if 1 or 2 other internationals may unexpectedly fall foul of hoops thinking- bayliss, redpath.....
Again would be very surprised.
I guess the comments could reflect injury records as well- clark going for example....wonder if will spencer will stay if we sign another lock

I'd be staggered if Bayliss left, Redpath has to stay to cover 10 but being injury prone is the problem I fear.

I 100% would like to retain them but clearly hoops searching for increased value for money so current internationals will be under close scrutiny I imagine.
The Scottish guys miss 2-3 less games I guess?
Sure negotiations will be tough for all, as we are seeing with watson

To be honest with Bayliss, I think he still needs to break into the Scottish team properly. At the moment he'll be behind Darge, Watson, Ritchie on the flanks at least. He'll be a squad player but I'm not sure he'll be away for every single Scotland game during the 6N as things stand.

Bayliss for me is an absolute weapon, he is like a centre when he gets going, the try he scored from the McNally strip where he raced away is I think exactly what JvG is after, the fact that Townsend is on a different page is fantastic news for Bath......... add to that his sidestep!

There was a lot of focus on schicklerlings pace last week (fair enough , he is a prop) but bayliss made up some serious ground to make the try saving tackle.
His stepping makes people look silly!

Exactly what he added before - lovely feet and a lightning fast gainline line break but then becomes isolated and gets turned over. Zach is not who we need at 8. Nathan Hughes (or reasonable facsimile thereof) is who we need there. Someone the rest of the team can keep up with.
... IMHO, of course.

Agreed JTF, ZM works great is a huge french team where he adds some speed and guile. Bath has the likes of Bayliss for that but lacks the heavy machinery to crash over the gainline on a wet and windy January evening (or frankly any time). Ackerman, the Du Preez twins, Billy V etc. the list goes on.

Quite a few of those second rows I would class primarily as back rows so that's about 17 plus the new academy intake where backrow is the flavour of the month also!
As per other thread I am v v surprised we have signed a few more senior backrowers with so many exciting options coming through and other more pressing areas to address but sure they know better than me

That line labeled FH is very, very worrying. Given our luck with these kinds of risks, you can see OB2 doing an ACL in the first minute of the first game of next season.

Don't tempt fate joe!
I agree its really not great. Squad looks imbalanced still to me - seem to have lurched from one blindingly obvious issue (v few senior locks) to another (no senior 10s).
My hope is that Francis is clearly a v good player and if he is training and playing largely at 10 then hopefully he will be a more than adequate back up (if he stays fit!).
Have to say I thought redpath looked class there but based on a few games and he also struggles to stay fit

Interesting: the club has posted its updated 2022/23 squad, and it includes the following at 10:
"Orlando Bailey, Ciaran Donoghue, Piers Francis, Sam Harris, George Worboys"
Who are Donoghue and Harris? Can't see them in the Academy listings on the offy?

Sam Harris is an up and coming fly half from 19 I think, great talent England U18 just out of school.
Ciaran Donoghue also 19 but I've not seen much of him.
To call these frontline Premiership 10s is massively stretching it, they are green, inexperienced and untried. But then so was Orlando Bailey I suppose.

Just the 17 backrowers plus richards, dingley, williams who I consider as backrows primarily.
Dingley isn't going to be big enough for lock is he? 6ft 4? Playef openside for eng u19s!
Feels like trying to balance the look of the squad out like lisying a load of utility backs as 10s

Williams has played almost exclusively lock this season, I think that's a reasonable statement for his position.

Well one of Harris, Donoghue or Worboys has got a big season in front of them. Let's see if JVG will take a different approach - you just know that Hooper's default would always be to go for Francis, rather than one of those youngsters, if/when Bailey isn't available. Maybe one or more of them is showing sufficiently well in training now to justify a place in the 23 next year. Would be exciting if so.

Williams asked in off season to be considered primarily as a lock.
Harris is being spoken of in highly complimentary terms, but I agree that it looks like 1x Flyhalf, 1 x utility & 3 x green flyhalves covering the position. Let's hope one of those three can step forward as Bailey did two seasons ago.

Williams may have played at lock mainly and asked to be a lock....I just don't think he is a very good one.
Just my opinion but I guess listing him there is fair enough.
You could argue the same about richards in terms of where he has played this season but I would say that's due to need at his club...he plays 6 for eng u20s.
Dingley has covered lock because of the need at his club but backrow for eng u19s

As a third choice lock I'm not a huge fan of Williams. As 5th choice I think he's pretty good.

Fair point, I agree

Just the 17 backrowers plus richards, dingley, williams who I consider as backrows primarily.
Dingley isn't going to be big enough for lock is he? 6ft 4? Played openside for eng u19s!
Feels like trying to balance the look of the squad out like listing a load of utility backs as 10s
Next season could go in any number of directions. This squad might be odd looking but we have absolutely no idea how they are going to perform. We might as well have 60 unknowns. You would hope 2/3rds are decent stock that will respond to good coaching but at least we know that some of this years young introductions can perform even if the team is little sort of scratch outfit. They have be moulded in the furnace.
All we need to do in order to improve from this relegation year is assemble an average team and get them to understand how not to concede tries.
You have to think the only performance that matters is that of JP Ferreira. I've no illusions of doing a Tigers as JvG will clearly have to sift through a cast of thousands to find the gems.
This isn't going to happen overnight!

It’ll take a season to put all the chairs in the right classrooms so a season but the following season it’s all up for grabs.
I’m sure JvG will sort it but for me there are too many holes in the squad for immediate success to my mind.
I do however look forward to a few exciting games, we have too many mini stars who will surely light up the season.

I agree re squad still not looking quite right but also do think we are running seriously low on excuses now. Huge change has been delivered and lots of investment to get the right non- playing team in place. The likes of jvg and Don macpherson won't come cheap.
I don't see any reason why fans shouldn't hope for and expect a significant improvement in both performances and league position. Top 8 with a few good performances really shouldn't feel like a pipedream but a decent start is vital for confidence.

Pollard is marquee player, and first choice, Watson will be a first choice starter, probably on the wing.
Comparing those to a couple of back-up players who are unlikely to making the bench each week is not exactly apples to apples.

Leic are losing two of their best and most influential players.
easy to cherry pick clubs incomings and outgoings to suit your narrative.
A positive sale fan will laud the signings of the likes of hill and ford, others will focus on the losses of de jager, faf etc.
I don't disagree we are light years away from top 4 but I personally think top 8 shouldn't feel an impossible task. If it does we may as well pack up and go home now.....

My point was that other clubs who are losing their most valuable players have more a less replaced them like for like even with the cap reduction. We have lost our 2 marquees and as you point out, we cant compare to sale or tigers. Of course I will concur that we have had very little benefit from Faletau and Watson recently so it doesnt seem as bad as when Mercer went or say Stuart or Underhill moved away.
I am looking forward to the new regime and agree that top 8 would be steady progress with the youngsters getting another years experience.

As you say I think a good crop of youngsters exposed to lots of rugby last season will hopefully stand us in decent stead.
We need to hit the ground running- open up with a few bad defeats and the scars of this season are an issue, get a few wins and confidence suddenly builds.
Big task no doubt but am encouraged by the level of off field change

I don't expect us to be competitive with the top six next season with the very young squad we have, which is clearly thin in a couple of vital areas.
I do expect us to be better than we have been this season.
Question is, if we finish in the bottom three will posters on this forum blame the coaches and demand that JVG et al resign, in the same way they have with Hooper and Hatley this season?

We'll have to wait and see on that one, Malco. Personally, I think we have a good chance of improving enough next season to build for greater things beyond 2023.
In a way, it is vital that we do- to attract strong recruits to round the squad out.

Hardly, Hooper et al were given 3 seasons, in fact the real ire from a majority on here was from the middle of the season run in.
With injured players returning and no improvement that for many was had last straw.
I certainly don’t expect JvG to do much first season. I do expect better defence though and an improving pack as starters.

Judging by the forward recruits I think it is fair to expect a more solid lineout, more competitive at the breakdown and better cover defence. that could be worth 4-6 more wins than this season. Not much, but quite an advance on where we are.

In answer to your question, I won't be because it's absurd to expect miracles in a season. It's not just that we came bottom anyway, it's winning 5 games out of 24, conceding an average of more than 4 tries a game with a points difference of minus 302. I'd regard the sort of results that saw Wasps finish 9th as more than satisfactory. Like others, I've supported us through years of stunning mediocrity so I'm not expecting miracles, but what we suffered this season was beyond abysmal and I don't think we're overreacting by pointing that out.Malco

First 6 weeks of last season we lost spencer and the rot had set in by the time he came back.
The drop off from him to fox, green, simpson far too much.
Hope this move prolongs Ben's career in the long term.

Surely that is possible?
We had five this year................Sale away, Saints at home and Wuss away should never have been lost from the position we were in.

The leavers will have contracts up to the end of this month, so whilst our season is over, they're still employees of the club.
Beyond that, they don't like putting up the new arrivals until they've had their photo day at Farliegh, so they can put the pics with the profiles - which is after everyone's had a holiday.
Not to mention that there may end up being a last-minute signing or two, maybe already deep in negotiations, and maybe an opportunistic noticing that someone on our "eventual" list becomes available sooner than expected...

I get all that WT but the reality is the club has announced that their 2022/3 squad is now complete. So shouldn’t they give us a finalised squad. There are always movements later on but having the likes of Taulupe and Roko who will not put a bb&w shirt on in anger whilst in their current contract in the list makes the list redundant.

My opinion of the pecking order (JvG is bound to disagree)
There's also Akenzue Al Kareem in the academy, but I've run out of spots in the backrow there.
I make it 76% EQP for the seniors (including Annett and Venter, excluding Bayliss and Richards - who I'm still surprised hasn't been promoted yet)
I make it 18 academy products in the seniors, though a couple of them were "products" on a technicality.

How do you assign the academy players, the Offy has them all as equal. No indication that Richards is seen as academy.
Ciaran Donoghue listed as a 10 as well. Surely Piers Francis is our back up fly half. If it Worboys we are in trouble, I'd argue for Sam Harris despite his age, physically stronger but we do have a problem there that needs handling.
Interesting that Redpath and Ojomoh are no longer listed as flyhalves but exclusively centres. Worth keeping an eye on the Offy there are changes regularly now.

There is still an academy SW it’s just that the club have merged the academy players with the total squad. The offy still has an academy new section.
Don’t despair COML will still attempt to show senior players separate from Academy. The Club usually announce promotions to the senior squad and that should appear in the academy news section.

B] Yes, lots of players cover multiple positions, but they're still 1 person, so I typically assign them to where they play most of their rugby - or occasionally into their second choice position rather than making an extra column somewhere.
Ciaran Donoghue may well be listed as a FH this year, but he was also at the club last year, when he was classified as a FB. As we have 2 academy FHs already (and yes, Harris can also play IC and F
I've classified him as a FB, because he's still just 1 person.
Piers Francis is probably our 2nd choice FH, but IC is his first choice position, and where he's played something like 75% of his professional rugby. Therefore I consider him to be an IC, albeit one who everyone here knows is considered a FH by the club.
C] I don't recall Redpath or Ojomo ever being classified as FHs, they just played there occasionally.
For other players, and to take examples, the offy may list Williams and Van Velze and backrow/locks, however...
I consider GJvV as specifically a #8, as that's where he's played 99% of his matches (with 1% at BSF)
I consider MW a lock as, whilst over his career, he's only played 30% of his matches there, over the last 2 years, he's played 80% of his rugby at lock.

I don't see problem with men, women and academy players all just being on one board with a 'filter' button tbh, same as you would if you bought anything from pretty much any online platform. This would mean that you could filter by contract, position, gender or whatever. I guess that it would be of interest for the Bath Rugby purist only hence why they cant be bothered!

Given the challenges we have and the game plan its looks like we're going to be playing (at least to begin with), we're going to need an experienced senior player, first choice in their position, who'll stay on the pitch for most of the game and be in a position to be in the ref's ear from minute 1.
Pretty much going to have to be Ben Spencer, isn't it?
... IMHO, of course.

I am still struggling to believe that we proposing to go into this campaign with only one specialist 10 in the squad, and an inexperienced one at that. It's either a master stroke or an act of absolute folly.
The fact that I am relieved that there is no relegation this season tells you where I stand...

Once again, what would you prefer to happen?
The club has been looking for a flyhalf who is the right quality, who is available, affordable and who wants to come to Bath.
So would you rather we hired someone who isn't good enough, but who ticks the other boxes or would you rather we put our trust in young players who have the talent but who don't have much experience?

So we have 9 SA players in our senior squad, 10 if we include the recent signing of Roux from Ireland, c20% of the total. I was told by someone who attended a recent FH Press Conference JvG stated if the players don't change we will change the players. Big lad , hope he gets a few games to prove himself. Imagine prem Cup will offer an opportunity.

I agree, massive improvement in video interviews, articles on the Offy and squad appointments. I always though that the players bios were dependant on them sitting down for a posed picture. You know the kind were he only comes round once a year!
Michael Etete is a good example, training ground pic till they find something more posed. Great improvement.

There are 74 players listed on the Offy ... I appreciate that now incorporates Academy players, but, if one assumes, that they are all selectable, that is a lot of bodies.

Sarries have about 55 but our Offy has some very young academy players ie 19 year olds, Spandler, Graham, Lock, Lloyd Gilmour etc is that the same with Sarries or is our academy bigger?

29 forwards + 18 backs + 22 academy = 69??
I think our list is missing the scholars (Pearce, Kirk, Erskine, Lock and Lloyd-Gilmour) which would take it up to 74

We now have 80 players listed on the Offy. There are 22 options in the back row.
We could field a completely different starting XV for every fixture the Club has between now and December. A lot of those lads aren't going to play a game of rugby all season.

True Opti, but we are very much in transition and the recent additions are at the top end of the quality spectrum which is mightily encouraging especially for next year
If that means a number of players working hard in training but with little chance to prove their value in competitive game time, then unfortunately I think it is a necessary consequence of critical in-season upgrading

A lot of those lads aren't going to play a first team game of rugby all season but they will all play games appropriate for this level, either through loans, BUCS games, little cup etc etc. Quite a number of those 80 wouldn't be ready for 1st team rugby anyway. In the modern game I think that we typically need about 50 who are (and a few more who wouldn't let you down if they covered the odd game)? Signing (and re-signing) some players who are seemingly eternally injured doesn't help things of course - I would expect deep cuts at the end of this season.

Agree matt.
Jvg and team have a huge squad inc the injury cover and will be closely running through rule over them with a view to next season and beyond.
Its a great situation for them..... less so for underperforming/perma-crocked players coming off contract.
I wouldn't be surprised if more injury cover guys in effect take spots next season of existing squad members.
I have no problem with that, we have been truly dire for a while and only limited number of players could say they have been tearing in trees for us consistently over yhe last few seasons.
If the likes of lee- Warner in addition to hill and lawrence prove they will improve our squad let's try to keep them.

There is a difference between paying someone and including or excluding them from the salary cap. If they don't play a game for their club all season - for example Charlie Ewels, he will still get his pay but it will not be counted in the cap.

Quite a few big names coming up for renewal this season, bit worrying when we know there's going to be some churn to accommodate Lawrence and Hill - with the usual churn associated with change of DOR.
B. Spencer
Redpath
Cokanasiga
Underhill
McConnochie
Francis
These are all players we probably want to keep.

Same 3 for me. Others dependent on finances and demands - particiularly Joe C. Francis I would let go and get Sam Harris involved more in 23/24. Ruaridh McConnochie is 31 now so suspect that he has peaked?

With the market so congested and Baths ownership/backing looking stable, I would guess a majority of those will want to stay. I could imagine Townsend leaning on Redpath and Bayliss to play in Scotland though.
adopted player, 24/25 Hame Faiva. 23/24 Ted Hill. 22/23 Cam Redpath. 21/22 Max Clark. 20/21 Henry Thomas. 19/20 Max Wright. 18/19 Cooper Vuna.

JC and Redpath would be my priority to keep. Hopefully with Lawrence just having joined it might be an incentive for Redpath to stay, although as you mentioned it might be attractive for him to move to Scotland.
Underhill is such a great player, it'll be a shame if he goes but you're right I'd rather keep the others first. He still lives near Gloucester if I remember right, maybe he'll look at moving back if he doesn't renew.

Definitely agree with Spencer and Redpath and, with Worboys and Harris coming through (and Redpath/Mojo), not sure there's a huge need to keep Francis. There's a lot of competition on the wing and at 7, so I suspect the accountants will have a say on Underhill, Big Joe and Ruaridh. That's the order I'd prioritise them in. Tough call.

Yes in that Marais article 2021 goal is 'I’d love to make the 1st team at Paul Roos this year!'. So he was upper 6th until recently.
In this article is calls them schoolboys and this one in Oct 2022 says that they are both still at school.

This was also confiemd on the Paul Roos Gymnasium FB site at the same time.

I think that an awful lot of players will be leaving as hear deals on offer have been reduced significantly and an exodus of "very cheap" Welsh players are flooding onto the market. Not a good time to be a rugby player coming out of contractMust be galling if you are an established player and no doubt being told take it or leave it but they know that the club or Bruce which is the same thing is willing to give a star player nearly a million a year. There will be a lot of p****d off players and what about the impact of the world cup as although league has been delayed take TH as an example We would expect that WS and Du Toit will both be in the world cup until hopefully the very late stages of the tournament so waht happens as i read they must have min 5 weeks break. We would be left with Rae and Venter or would we as both have been here a couple of seasons so we could be relying on Archie Griffin and others if they are out of contract. This could be very messy as relegation is quite rightly back I think and we could easily be marooned at the bottom again.

Du Toit isn't joining us until after the World Cup. As things stand it's quite possible that Stuart won't make the squad. The World Cup could actually do us a big favour. It's quite possible that no Bath players will feature in it.

Russell doesn't join us until after the World Cup either. I would expect Lawrence and Redpath to be going but I don't think either are guaranteed. I can see Borthwick going with Porter, Kelly and Tuilagi for England and Redpath is clearly currently not first choice for Scotland.

I agree Lawrence is more of a 13 than a 12 but I think SB has him as his first pick at 12. Tuilagi will be lucky to last through the group stages I'd have though. Kelly decent pick but international experience is short big ask for him to perform at the RWC.

The signs were that Kelly was going to be first choice 12 before his injury. Obviously Lawrence wasn't originally in contention but with Slade underperforming at 13 and OL doing the business there for Bath, I can certainly see Borthwick wanting to give that pair a go. They have a complimentary skillset which really covers everything you need at centre, aside from a genuinely cultured kicking game. Kelly can kick well, not sure he's on a level with Slade though, not yet at least. Especially with Steward at 15, that would be the one weakness I can see in DK/OL.
Kelly has Leinster and probably the playoffs to show where he's at with fitness and form. If he does well, I can't see Borthwick (plus Sinfield, Wiggy and Walters) not picking him.

I think that it will depend partly on whether Manu and Kelly match up in the Prem Semis and how they get on vs each other. If each of them dominates the other that will go a long way to showing how ready each of them are. Has Slade played much 12 this year (I haven't really been watching Exe). Lawrence is a shoe-in at 13 IMO.

Squad midfield will be all or 6 (Kelly dropping out if Tuilagi is fit - or possibly even Smith as fall-guy) of:
Ford, Smith, Farrell
Tuilagi, Kelly, Lawrence, Slade
I think that gives England some fantastic permutations of passers/kickers/boshers, and a good range of like-for-like, change-up options on bench.
Would love to be England coach and work with that lot!

I felt like Marchant really should have been the equivalent of JJ, when JJ was supreme - but Eddie is an idiot, and the perennial muddle at 10/12 put paid to that. His performance against us last week kind of made me wonder whether i'd built him up a bit too much though.

I have to say that's my view. For someone to have that many caps and not (in my recollection) stood out or bossed a game feels wrong. Few British and Irish players get to that number of caps without supporters being able to make a case for them a a Lion. Not sure even Ex fans could do that..

Shame if Farrell is in the team because of course that means I can't go and watch them in the final

Long term member of the Slade-is-overrated club here.
I think he serves as kind of a blank sheet you can project your expectations on to.
He can kick really far, he can open up a defence, he can tackle forcefully, he's got such a high rugby IQ... But then proceeds to do none of these things as he serves up mediocre game after mediocre. But he could do any of them, if X,Y,Z...

Long term member of the Slade-is-a-rugby-god club here. For England he's recently mostly had Farrell at 12 so got either slow ball or no ball at all and the defenses have just been able to drift onto him. Give him a fit-and-firing Manu or, better, Ollie and see what happens. The ABs rate him and they're not bad judges of a player.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu

I think this is right, currently (pending confirmation for FLW, GJvV and any academy graduates):
If I had to guess, I'd say that Stewart, Richards, Staddon, Merigan; TCS, Worboys and Goss will probably graduate from the academy - I also wouldn't be surprised if it's not an announced thing.

38 senior players 'not leaving and/or confirmed staying' .... certainly not going to get through a season without about 10 of the Academy (and/or short-term cover signings) stepping up.

On the law of averages over a 10 year period we are probably "due" a season of no injuries!!!
