CHERRYPICKERS? BATH v GLOUCESTER
Richards: a place?
By PG Tips
October 4 2022
Bath will want to be cherry pickers when they host Gloucester at the Rec on Saturday. To fix discipline issues they need to be selective about when to contest the breakdown or push the offside line, but there must be no picking and choosing when to tackle. First up completion is a must if they are to stop the rot of first half routs. Sticking to the gameplan and all out effort must be non-negotiable too. The home crowd will expect a performance of conviction and credibility- and a win. The manner of that win will be merely the cherry on the cake.
Winning is easier said than done. Slow starts and inconsistent concentration in defence are not good omens. Gloucester put years of inconsistency behind them last season to play some fine rugby under George Skivington, only narrowly missing out on the playoffs. Their current 9th position is deceptive. So far they have played only 2 matches, a bye week and cancellation by Worcester accounting for the others. Their one defeat, by 2 points, came at Saracens where they scored 5 tries. These are not opponents to take lightly.
The Gloucester pack should be as physical and gnarly as tradition demands. Strong foundations start with Balmain and Singleton, supported by the likes of Alemanno and Clarke. In the back row they have a choice of heavy ball carriers in Tuisue, Ackermann or Morgan and scavengers Ludlow, Reid and Polledri. In a departure from tradition, their backline, on their day, can be both ambitious and swashbuckling. Hastings gets them firing well from fly half, their centres Atkinson and Harris carry hard to the line and any break can be finished off with pace by May, Rees-Zammit or Carerras.
Critics might well observe that against that threat the Bath squad would need to stand on tiptoe atop a cherrypicker to have any chance of victory. We have already seen though, that any side can win well this season as Newcastle showed last weekend, after a desperate Worcester had humbled them the week before. Some of the spirit shown by the Warriors could be available to Bath in the form of loanees Morozov, Lee-Warner, Hill and Lawrence. They could be desperate to play to forget for a moment the off-field woes at Sixways. This though is a team game and, whether match fit or not, van Graan faces a challenge in how he integrates them into the squad. The decision may be made for him by a mounting injury list. It would be no surprise to see at least one of the loan quartet on the bench at least. Van Graan and Ferreira want to effect a culture change. Could more fresh blood, albeit temporary, help grow that change?
Change looks likely in the back 5 selection due to injury and at centre to shore up the defence. I hope that a place can be found for Ewan Richards, now over a niggle and fit enough to be 24th man last weekend. His height, heft and pace is needed and when given a chance last season he showed he has the guts and character for the toughest scrap. Centre may be a trickier selection test. Would a Bailey/Francis 10/12 combo solidify the midfield or should van Graan take a punt on Ollie Lawrence slotting in after only a couple of training sessions?
Amid the desperate results, the opening fixtures have offered mild glows of hope. The scrum, maul and maul defence are much improved and last year’s second half capitulations have been replaced by late defiance. Bath must turn these glows into the full flame of an eighty-minute performance: full -on concentration, dominant defence, accuracy and ruthlessness. Only then can they pick off the Cherry and Whites.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Boyce, Dunn, Stuart, Attwood, Roux, Reid, Bayliss, Hill. Schreuder, Bailey.Hamer-Webb, Francis, Joseph, Cokanasiga. Gallagher.

Gloucester: Rapava-Ruskin, Singleton, Balmain, Clarke, Alemanno, Ackermann, Reid, Tuisue. Meehan, Hastings. May, Atkinson, Harris, Rees-Zammit. Evans.
Replacements: Socino, Elrington, Ford-Robinson, Craig, Ludlow. Chapman, Twelvetrees, Carreras.

My mind's been going places without me lately - Bushfire The B52's
Glos by 30 pts.
Their driving maul is lethal, so I don't hold much hope if we're on the back foot and giving away penalties, but if it's 4 Attwood 5 Roux 6 Richards, we might nullify it a little. If someone can work out a way of getting B Spencer fit, I'd maybe upgrade my state of optimism from 'non-existent' to 'the faintest of glimmers'.
In fact, I'd just like to go in at half time in touch, which is a testament to how low my expectations have sunk.
We missed a few tackles too.
We need to be on parity at HT, we can't be chasing these wide margins every game.
Defence.
It’s not a matter of will Glocs get a TBP it’s just how long in the first half will it take them to get it.
Quote:OutsideBath
During both our home games I attended the defence, if you can call it that, was easy to get around and our tackling was pathetic. Our defence coach hasn’t made any positive impact and mostly the players seem to be wandering around.

"It's all right, Andy! It's just bolognaise!"
Appreciate there's a balancing act between, say, short and long-term benefits, and whether picking a fully motivated Butt is better than a newly arrived Larence, but I'd give anything for a half-ok day on the scoreboard and clearly JvG, a man who is reputedly very good at the management soft skills, thinks we need some fresh impetus. Despite the start he's made, I trust him to get it right.
(...cue 13-53 on Saturday with Lawrence going off injured after 7 minutes and us having a 6-2 bench).

I will be there with 4 Glaws supporting mates who will be expecting another mauling by them as last season at Castle Grim. My brother, who only sees Bath lose, is coming along so I will attend in hope that our 23 perform as well as the local pubs look after their beers 🤞
That’s brave, I hope you don’t mind being laughed at all afternoon!
That said in the warm up at ours they were running lots of drills using the centres; Atkinson and 36 to put in huge miss two passes to Thorley and LRZ out wide on the touchlines. Our midfield defence jamming in seemed to stop that but in the warm-up it was making me nervous (despite the accuracy being a bit hit and miss)
Best of luck

I can't think of much that would be worse for squad morale than including Hill over Ellis or Lawrence over Butt. Whether they are better players is neither here nor there. It just feels incredibly disrespectful to parachute them in over a/ a player who has fought hard to get back from an operated shoulder, and b/ a player who just never seems to be given an opportunity.
Not totally dismissing your points but at the end of day these are professional sportsman, if they are not deemed to be as good as someone else, however long they’ve been at the club, they need to use that disappointment to drive them to be better. The likes of Ellis have been around long enough to know how the games works.
Let’s face it, we’re not winning, we need to find a way to win, if that’s with loaners then so be it.

Entirely agree.
I can think of one thing worse though.
Parachuting the Worcester players in, fracturing morale in the squad, and then still getting stuffed by 50 points.
No improvement in the result and massive deterioration in morale would be the worst double whammy of all.

True. Interestingly you can actually pinpoint Bath's decline to the moment to the club parachuted Rhys Webb in over Chris Cook and Max Green (the former of which had his fair share of injuries and the latter just never seemed to be given an opportunity) and morale 'fractured'.

Our decline goes back a lot further than that. 1997 and the onset of professionalism, to be precise. We didn't adapt, others did and our exceptionalism prevented us from seeing it.
... IMHO, of course.
Now in Honolulu

decline ... has basically been since Owen Farrell took Anthony Watson out in the prem final.
That was certainly a sliding doors moment. Win that final (I still think that was perfectly possible if Ant hadn't been concussed while they scored their first try and/or Farrell had got the red-card he deserved) and who knows how things would have panned out for Ford(s) and Bath.
That remains the peak of the post HC/professional era, and there is little but misery and decline ever since.

Things could have been so different had we won that final, however we didn't and are now out of our depth in the PL.

Bath's instagram has a post saying 'you might see some new faces in BBW this Saturday', including photos of all except Hill (who is possibly the player people are most excited to see)?
I guess we also don't know the physical state of various players. Ellis, for example, having played Wednesday/Saturday after a long lay-off, could be a bit shot.
Asked why he has signed 23-year-old Lawrence - who is just on the periphery of Eddie Jones’ England squad with less than a year to the Rugby World Cup - initially van Graan answered with two words - “Gain line.”
He continued: “He is an international standard player. Ollie is somebody who wants to achieve, somebody who is exceptional both sides of the ball, somebody who offers a poach threat, has good feet, a good hand off, good balance and somebody I really enjoyed talking to when I spoke to him.”
He added: “I think the composition of the squad is going to take time and he adds something different to the centres we currently have. I am going to add people who I think can make a difference and for now for the short term I think he can make a difference.”
SomersetLive understands Bath have had Lawrence on their wanted list for some time, having tried to sign the 23-year-old on a permanent deal a couple of years ago, well before before van Graan arrived at the club from Munster.

Back to the game then (via the topic of new arrivals), I think that including a couple of the new players on the bench would be more likely, if only for the sheer practicality of learning calls etc.

Just saw on Twitter (Miles Reads) account that Oddballs sorted out the boys with some kit. All smiles at Bath at the moment looking at that picture. Someone needs to tell those lads to knuckle down or ship out. Bottom of the league.....again!
Just out of interest how do you think that situation would look for a successful (on the pitch)side?
If it was as simple as telling them to look miserable in photos and not do anything rugby related and look like you were enjoying it they would have tried it already.
Anything that raises team moral is usually regarded as positive but hey you want misery try reading up on eeyore.

These guys will be seriously motivated and may help kick-start our campaign.

They are in a completely different space to us and have the luxury of backing a squad going well with relatively few major injuries in comparison.
If they get loads of injuries in next few months and the wuss guys add real value for us I guess in private he may feel differently.
Really interested to see our squad today. Could see Lawrence start and Fergus on the bench feasibly.
“I really like this group we have got and if I keep them all in the building I will,” he said following a start to the season where his team have played just two Premiership matches so far due to a bye week and the cancellation of last weekend’s game with Worcester.

But from my point of view I like the squad we have got, I like backing young players like you see with Harry Taylor and Cam Jordan and these lads.

Good-looking side that.
Big pack stuffed with ball carriers and Lawrence and JCok should ask questions of Hastings. Almost feels like we’ve torn it up and gone back to square one. Of course, injuries dictating a lot of who plays, but that team feels like it’s been picked with a different, more confrontational game plan in mind.
Like last week, Spencer at 9 and we’ve got a slim hope. Without him, I can’t see anything other than a solid Glos win. Still, I’ll watch this week as interested to see what Roux, Ellis, Merigan and Lawrence bring.

I’m increasingly convinced you can’t play Reid and Bayliss in the same back row. They’re very good young players, but in the Prem you need more weight in the XV across 6,7,8. Same with White, Cloete and Underhill. These guys are, for me, pretty much all 7s.
Hence, I think it’s interesting we’ve gone with a big 6 and a carrying 8. As I said above, feels like going back to basics and I’m hoping that, for the first time in a long time, behind Roux and Attwood, the back row get on the front foot and don’t get physically dominated.
It's his mobility that I think holds him back. He looks like a second row playing in the backrow to me rather than a natural flanker.
With all the changes I cannot see them winning though.
If we are to lose consistently and play limited rugby, I wonder how long it will take for fans to get as disenchanted with this coahing team as with the last?

Pedant alert - Ctrl V?
I do think that at some stage JvG will begin to make a difference. Seeing players in training and in matches is very different and this is still early days in terms of imposing his vision.
We are struggling at present no doubt about it and this selection tells you that we are looking for a kick and confrontational battle - once crumb of comfort I do see is that Chris Harris is missing from their lineup - Harris is massively under rated IMHO his defensive capabilities are up there with the best so maybe just maybe if we can get parity and no reason with that front 5 that we won't we might be able to get some success.
We need to really get behind the boys tomorrow and cheer them and in particular give Ollie Lawrence a welcome to remember.
I would like to have seen Coetzee starting with an other on the bench as Will has been playing and acting like a big shot Billy without firing any big shots.
Our game plan must be sending runners all day at Hastings who is a boy band show pony that could not tackle a bale of hay. Run over the top of him and generate quick ball then launch Lawrence et al at them.
We miss de Glanvilles lines of running and gliding pace but Gallagher has been very good to date and Orlando has been struggling this season so hopefully Francis will step up and I think that we will give them a game and may be sneak a win.

I am surprised about the number of negative comments about the selection this week. As a club we are 0 from 5. Could you imagine the uproar if we picked the same side as last week? JvG and his team are, I imagine looking for some combinations to spark a win and they need time to work out who can perform where and it what context. Understanding what he has at his disposal will take time and with no relegation this year he can have as much time as he needs to work it out, provided we see some green shoots. I particularly lie our centre combination who have played together before and are apparently best mates.

Agree with that. If certain combinations really click, and they can be consistently picked, then great. But mostly we need a system that players can slot into, with full use of the squad to guard against further attrition.

I think we could reasonably expect this team to beat Gloucester at the Rec.
We won't see anything like this team for the whole season.
Possibly about 14 of that 23 you name are available - some not picked I assume and I would argue that coetzee is better than rae and roux is better than at least 1 of the 3 locks named.
Do agree though that we are missing too many of our better , most influential players to expect a result tomorrow given woeful form.
Bit bemused by comments about ellis' lack of power - he is extremely powerful and exceptional in defensive and offensive mauls. Could do with adding to his carrying game and some indiscipline has crept in last few seasons. Would have richards at 6 myself
Backline looks better balanced with 2 big carriers.
Big opportunity for merigan, possibly cos last specialist 8 still standing but all the same he can carry and can prove he can do a job for us.
Fantastic to richards back in the 23- quality player to have back in the mix.

Malco I get that its disappointing that players get injured in rugby and Bath players more than most, but I really don't understand your obsession with listing all those unavailable - seemingly every other day.
The simple fact is that even when most of those were available we didn't win much, as everyone keeps saying its not about the individual players anyway (how often so we start off by saying 'on paper...').
Those players aren't available. We need to get behind those who are.

I have no idea what glos first 23 would look like but certainly seem to have less injuries than us.
Twelvetrees/thorley/Morgan available but not picked?
To matts point seems little point week after week bemoaning our injury list. It implies bad luck, we are hard done to and that the squad we put out is beaten before the whistle blows.
It can't be bad luck game after game, season after season, and other clubs manage to sneak wins whilst having injury crisis' so it shouldn't be impossible. Problem is no matter what squad we put out we are cr*p at rugby.

Sarries etc. do perfectly well without about a dozen internationals during the various competitions, they don't sit there having a whine about it - they crack on with what they have (and do a pretty good job). It's just pointless moaning, there is nothing that we as fans can do about it other than support the team on the pitch.
Gloucester have hardly played this season hence the almost total lack of injuries I would guess. Unfortunately I'm sure they will get their fair share over the course of the season, as they did with Polledri, May etc previously.

Gloucester have hardly played this season hence the almost total lack of injuries I would guess. Unfortunately I'm sure they will get their fair share over the course of the season, as they did with Polledri, May etc previously.
A very good point regarding Sarries, they have a good coaching setup that ensures any players coming in fit seamlessly into their structure. They also recruit very well.
Bath don’t seem to be able to get the coaching setup right or find a way to recruit well.
We’ll see this tomorrow with our defending, the players will appear to have never met before.

Not sure what your point is Malco - I very much doubt any team will see their 'first' team all season
Gloucester, tomorrow, are really only missing Chris Harris.
Just sounds like a case of 'get your excuses in early' to me. That Bath team, all professional first team players bar Nahum Merigan, should be capable of competing in the Premiership.
I'm really bored of hearing that. What sports team in any major sport in the world would be expected to win without half its best players?
I am certainly not expecting a win and probably wouldn't even with a fully fit first choice 15. To get top half of the prem you only need to win 3 or 4 away matches if your home results are solid. Glaws away wouldn't come into that category
It is the performance that is so crucial and why last week was so disappointing. If our defence is as narrow and disjointed as it was in first half last week the likes of LRZ will crucify us out wide

I agree with your points about Ellis good in lineout defence and his work rate. I disagree with his physicality, for a big man he punches less of his size than peter stringer. He can not carry the ball with any sort of power nor make dominate tackles. He use to make 1-2 big hits a game and now he is very negative in the tackles. Not sure if thats to do with injures or confidence.
I hope he proves me wrong tomorrow and plays out of his skin.
Agree that carrying and dominant tackles are his work ons.
Maul is definitely a strength and a key part of jvgs game. Lots of unseen good work there.
He was renowned for his explosive power when younger with some fairly absurd stats to back it up. Moved from lock where he partnered ewels for eng u20 but at 6ft 4 always a bit on the short side.
Totally agree he has plenty to prove as gone off the boil, been injured alot and slid well down the pecking order. Fingers crossed he goes well, he will need to to keep a backrow spot as we have so many options to come back in. Richards will be pushing him for a start next week I think.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think JJ deserves to be in the squad and Ojomo hasn't been good enough in defence but an opportunistic signing jumping ahead of you after being in the club for less than a week is going to put some folks noses out!
As for injuries. It's been like this for 6 or so seasons now. I'm wondering if we should get in an exorcist in?! Or spray holey water over the whole of Farleigh and the Rec. It feels like more than just bad luck but on the face of it Bath seem to be doing nothing wrong.
If we can also keep Glos to less than 50 pts it will be a good day for Bath
Quote:Rob
A few points. On the face of it I'm glad to see Lawrence in the side. We just need a few players who can get over the gain line. However I'm guessing this could be having an effect amongst the squad. Players like JJ and Ojomo who have been through pre season and are well versed in Bath tactics, dropped like a stone. That is very hard to manage without JVG becoming unpopular/ losing the changing room.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think JJ deserves to be in the squad and Ojomo hasn't been good enough in defence but an opportunistic signing jumping ahead of you after being in the club for less than a week is going to put some folks noses out!
JJ was being released Ed Griffiths stepped in late in the day and got him to resign. Pure speculation but maybe JJ was being released to free space for a big direct running centre, which is something JvG likes, but that couldn't happen because of JJ staying
Agree Max and Mojo have been through preseason etc. but if they are not executing their game which JvG expects of them, then they will be in the firing line to be dropped. Plus if players do become petulant and don't like their noses being put out of joint as they don't like what JvG is doing then that will tell JvG everything he needs to know about their characters and whether he wants them in the squad.
Not a direct comparison, but back on the 1997 Lions Tour the players agreed that if you missed out on a test place it was your responsibility to congratulate the player taking your position and use that disappointment to raise your game. Same applies here for me if players are disappointed they are dropped use that as motivation to shove it back down JvG throat he made the wrong decision.BY doing that it lifts competition and raises the standard of the team

Stakes are massive for the players this season.
May be 2 less prem clubs by next season so c100 less spots for prem contracts.
Imagine a large number of our players are off contract.
Would expect conversations are already happening about Lawrence staying well beyond the next month if jvg likes what he sees and what he offers.

Good point. I'm reliably informed Bruce was one of 2 or 3 other owners who voted for a return to a £6.4m cap so he must be comfortable about his future investment in Bath Rugby...

Bring on next weekend

Front 5 were good. Ellis and Reid everywhere and physical. Lawrence heavily involved and a threat. Back 3 were excellent. JCok is like a new man these last few weeks. GH-W looks lively, just need to give him the ball more. Gallagher is a brilliant and smart player.
Problems were lineout (which I thought we’d fixed) and defence, which was so soft. Our game plan and game management in second half were much better too. Foley was ok… just a shame he attended to the stricken Atkinson rather than looking at Glos slowing our ball under the posts 5m out.
Hate losing. But an encouraging performance with a bit of grit and pride.
Basics.

Credit to Gloucester's defence though. They were tough and disciplined. They would have stopped more adept attacks than outs with that performance.
On the plus side, we didnt get hammered and I hope we sign Lawrence full time ASAP.

Yes, can understand why that would be. Personally though, when it comes to kicking I am of the view that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Much like, say a bowler in cricket, styles are individual and you should do whatever suits you best. I hope JC will prove me completely wrong.
However we still lost, despite looking very dominant in that second half - Where was our maul defence in the first half??
Its a home loss as well.. that's 5 losses now, 3 home defeats and we've probably only played 2 teams who'll be in the top half of the table.

Does your new kicking coach moonlight as my chiropractor?
Still no sign of any coherent attack and OB really is a poor kicker. Would like to see Lawrence signed permanently.
Slightly improved performance, but we really do have a long way to progress to being a mediocre team.
Shame the lineout was a letdown, that cost us badly. It looked more like a communication and timing problem than a case of misfiring hookers.

He’s not a poor kicker. He missed two kicks, one of which was right on the touch line, and the other not far from it. Most Premiership kickers struggle right on the touch lines.

Certainly no personal detraction from me meant just a assessment that JVG will change up the squad to his taste. Thought Ellis played well. If we don't keep Lawrence, today has proved a direct 13 such as Butt is needed outside Redpath

Disagree, he should have comfortably made both of them and in fact looked to have scuffed the second.
As a side issue Foley proved himself to be one of the worst refs in the PL. Doesn’t understand the meaning of offside and made a number of poor decisions that he should have got right affecting both teams.

Shame not to win but we were toothless in the first half again. Gloucester trying to over play - they should've kept it simpler and they'd have been well up.
What happened to the line out!?
Their 9 should've been red carded.
Their 3elrd try was obstruction - he lays a hand on his team mate, who is in front of him. Clear contact.
Thought Merigan was excellent today. A proper ball carrying 8.
What the hell is going on with our lineout and how Charteris is still around I have zero idea.
Need to take our chances better - no try from the backs despite all the pressure - but you could see the JvG gameplay somewhat.
Lawrence was great, as was JoCo in attack (his tackling really is poor). The pack recovered in the 2nd half.
But still nothing in the win column...
We played all the rugby but not in the right parts of the pitch.
So we lost despite being the more positive side. Shame. We are still a bottom 4 side, as Glaws have been for 20 years apart from the odd blip.
Glaws meanwhile turned up with no intention of playing rugby apart from expecting us to make all the mistakes & gift them points. That just about worked for them but they are so boring & one dimensional. Did LRZ play today? Who?
Exactly. They are never going to be top 6 😱
With a huge nod to Tom Ellis, who I thought was immense, my man of the match on any other day would have been Joe Cokanasiga and if he's going to play like that from now on, he'll be man of the match more often than not. But.

JVG post game comments suggesting the situation with the Worcester loanees is very fluid and he's not sure if any if them will be with us by next weekend. He did say he's sure he wants Lawrence to stay though. Fingers crossed a deal can be worked out, although I'm sure salary cap etc means it won't be straightforward.
In the chronicle it said Sale and Stade Francais are also pursuing Lawrence.
Now all of this would be fine if I felt it was a question of finding a way back, get the forwards in the fight, winning ball and then let the backs score the tries, but I get the feeling that this is not where the coaches want us to go and my season ticket will quickly become too expensive if the only attacking option is the driving maul. The bright spot of course was Lawrence, but he has not been coached by Bath.
Quote:warrenball
we still lost and it was so tedious to watch one off players hopefully throwing themselves at an organised defence, without any attacking guile.
Not unlike Bristol, who are also not getting good results. It frustrated me hugely that we resorted to kicking away possession in decent field positions. I get the aim of the kick tennis but boy if there is anything to turn me off rugby that's it.

However… we just need a win, however it comes, so I’m willing to sacrifice every bit of style for a W. I think we have enough talent, and Maddock coaching the backs, to believe we do have something exciting to offer as/when/if we have a firmer foundation. JCok, GHW and Gallagher were great yesterday - I’d love to see what they outside a line out that functions, in a bit more space, with a bit more confidence.

We are struggling at 10 but that is not surprising someone said Billy Searle was at the Rec yesterday.
Glos looked relieved at the final whistle and I am not surprised it is not many teams who cause them as many problems as we did yesterday and dominate metres gained with their much vaunted back line.
Injuries are still a huge worry. Gloucester mate text me last night to say he thought they were lucky to win. I really cannot argue with that on another day.
A few off the top of my head include the chance to build something from scratch might excite a pro, and, as others have said, Bruce’s wallet means we’re a safer financial bet than most clubs. For Lawrence, being closer to Worc than Paris and the promise of first XV rugby, rather than being behind Manu at Sale, say, might be interesting.
I know, I know, we’re not the hottest ticket in town, but there are reasons, and for some more than others, why the Bath challenge might the right fit right now. It’s also a good test of JvG, to see if he can sell it, man to man, to his players. By all accounts, that's one of his strengths. Hopefully, he tells Lawrence he wants to build the back line around him, that we’ve been missing a guy like him, that the 12/13 shirt is his if he wants it.
I cannot believe the club can so limited in outlook to be happy with the options at 10?
a) third Glos try wasn't chalked off for blocking - was this even picked up/looked at? Seemed to me like Meehan prevents Reid from attempting tackle. Just watched highlights and still of that opinion.
b) their last yellow didn't wasn't a penalty try as well - is it because we were short?
Bar the lineout, it was an encouraging performance. However, I felt the same after the Bristol game and we failed - quite spectacularly - to build on the promise shown there.
Sarries away next. Has been 50+ the past few years IIRC, so keeping it under 30 would be some achievement for us.

And that repeated miserable attitude from Mr OB, is why I have to take regular breaks from this forum. I am not one eyed, or viewing through Rose-Tinted glasses, but the performance on Saturday did seem better. When times are tough look for small positives please
Mr OB, I don't know what your preferred tipple is, but I would gladly buy you one to see a smile, if that is possible.
Onwards and upwards!
We are never going to win a game when so many line outs are lost, I reckon 6 in the first half alone. What is the point in winning a penalty from tackling, kicking to touch are turning the ball over, just totally inept for professional players.
I see many on here thought Roux had a good game, from what I saw he gave away two penalties on the first two breakdowns he was involved in which cost us 14 points, so I am not sure how good he really was.
I am sure reality will hit home next week when we play Sarries away, who certainly know how to use that much possession to maximum effect, they out 50 on Tigers so can easily put 60+ again on us.
We still look a very very poor side who struggle even to execute the basics.

b) their last yellow didn't wasn't a penalty try as well - is it because we were short?
We all thought that if it was a yellow card then it had to be a penalty try as well given where the infringement took place and it seemed certain Bath would have scored a try otherwise.

Always one looking to take offence you mean? OK you obviously think that Bristol are a) playing good rugby or b) getting the results that you hoped for? I watched the Bristol game and the bash crash up the middle when you had loads of guys out wide screaming for the ball is exactly how we have watched Bath play for the last season +. It was a shame because thats not the Bristol that I enjoyed watching in past seasons. Yes, Bristol are less poor than Bath if thats what you want to hear, you are 100% correct...but both are a country mile away from challenging anyone half decent at the moment.

Recently it has been playing to get a losing a bonus point or a try bonus point or even worse nothing at all.
We must stop conceding penalties for hanging on when we make a break........better to let them have the ball surely.
As said above (Nick Holder) we have the ball and attach on about the half way line. Concede penalty, they kick for the corner, win the lineout, maul.......try. Didn't we talk about that all week at Farleigh?
In that case...........or indeed every case, better to let them have the ball...........and remember to go 3 paces less and stick with support and support get there quicker
Please keep Lawrence and Gallagher looks a big plus.

I haven't seen the game yet so can anyone expand on the lost lineouts? Was it good competition from Glos or a series of mistakes in our throws and lifts?
Seemed to be miss throws rather than Glos competing, although they did steal a couple by reading where the throw was going.
Was just a bad day at the office for our lineout.
Have to sat that I thought we were really poor again personally though its all relative- better than the sale game which was comically inept.
At least some positives this week but crikey when we are pleased losing to an undercooked glos at home when they have had 3 men sin binned its not great. That is the reality of how low we have sunk i guess.
Good to see our maul functioning in attack. Backrow all had a few good moments. Lawrence looked bright and encouraging rumours of him staying for the season. With him and coko looking like he actually enjoys rugby again we now have a few carrying threats.
I won't bother on the negatives as too many to list. Damage limitation next week.

Can someone tell me why:
a) third Glos try wasn't chalked off for blocking - was this even picked up/looked at? Seemed to me like Meehan prevents Reid from attempting tackle. Just watched highlights and still of that opinion.
b) their last yellow didn't wasn't a penalty try as well - is it because we were short? .
On a) Foley claimed that Meehan had not changed position so there was no obstruction. To be fair, although he pushed at Reid it was without much force so might not have prevented a truly determined tackle attempt. However, a similar incident in today's Northampton-Wasps match in which the obstructor dod not change position or line but did interfere with his arms was penalised - not consistent.
Have not seen replay of b) to comment.
I do think though that Foley could have been harder on Meehan for the high tackle on Redpath. The contact was with a deliberately swinging arm. Foley's reason for yellow was that Meehan was "the second tackler" - however, I did not see Redpath lowering enough to mitigate and Meehan certainly made no attempt to go lower, so another ref might well have shown him red.

Atters, Reid, JC and Gallagher were the standouts for me.
Hell we miss Ben Spencer.
WIP
I know we still lost, but gonna pick a positive or two. I thought there was no way in hell we were defending that last 5m lineout successfully, particularly against Glaws' maul. Bonus point for them, no point for us was odds on. It was great effort. I know that we didn't have that much incision, but that last phase we kept the ball without dropping it for 20+ phases - in fact I think we did that a couple of times. I know that's like a bare minimum, but it is a notable improvement on last season.
I really hope we keep Ollie Lawrence, he's exactly what we need. And, to be brutally honest, he showed what a busted flush JJ has become.

It was weird because it wasn't like Gloucester were reading our calls and beating us to the jump - it just was functioning terribly. Players not being lifted, throws barely making the front let alone the jumper, overthrows.
The sense of lack of belief was palpable at every lineout. Don't recall ever seeing that in a professional rugby team.

Haven't you been watching us for the last year?
... IMHO, of course.

Surprised to read this Charlie, given you generally tend to look for positives.
It's not as if the 'reality of how low we have sunk' is some overnight revelation. 3 weeks ago, we were 30 odd down at half time to Wasps. We sunk to the bottom some time ago, and that's a hard place to climb out of. I've become very negative and cynical this season as it kind of feels like the only realistic place to be, but being at the game on Saturday gave me some real hope.
I felt it was wrong to introduce Ollie Lawrence quite so quickly - it just felt a bit needy. But, he contributed massively and it just felt to me as though he might have galvanised Joe C into the most committed, proactive performance i've seen from him. Ellis and Reid, in particular just had a bit of fury about them that is exactly what is needed - as a team, there's no way we're going to just suddenly click into 5th gear and glide through any team. But being unpleasant and uncomfortable to play against is a good place to start.
It really is a shame that we're away to Sarries next week, because it's very likely to send us back to square 1 - not least because that plastic pitch may mean one or two players have to stand down.

My recollection (bearing in mind I wasn't taking notes)...
The first two lineouts were caught fine, but they were to the front (Reid?) and somewhat conservative so the resulting ball wasn't particularly dynamic.
The next two were lost throwing to the middle / tail of the line. I'm not sure who the jumper was as they didn't get anywhere near the ball which dropped into the lap of the Gloucester players, who were not contesting, at the tail.
After this Gloucester did start contesting (well you would, wouldn't you) and won at least a couple, including at the front, by getting their man up earlier / in front.

I think we have to be realistic about next week. In F1 terms, Salaries are not our race. Rest the players that need it, rotate the others, prioritize avoiding injuries. A TBP would be amazing, not shipping 50 would be a good result. Salaries are currently playing a game with which we are not familiar and we need to recognize that and plan accordingly.

When your primary source of lineout possession is your openside jumping at 2 you have limited options.
It leaves you without a 100% banker throw.

As you say there was a few bright spots- I just think (as with bris) glos are a good but not great team, we were at home , it was only their third league game of the season, they had 3 men binned....I think to still lose is a major worry as you are wondering what needs to happen to win! Sale were down to 14 for 70 mins!
As you its a shame its sarries away next week- if it was Newcastle at home you would be thinking we had a chance of turning the corner (though we have managed to lose that fixture a few times in recent years!).
I do think jvg/jpf/mad dog will get there- I just think we look really clueless still a lot of the time and it's going to take a lot longer than u had hoped.....
I guess my assessment was primarily based on the fact that I just really enjoyed being at the Rec, enjoyed the fact that all results were possible until the final whistle went, and enjoyed being able to metaphorically look the players in the eye afterwards. I was at the Sale game, and I can honestly say i've never had a more miserable game at the Rec - if i'd bumped into a player after that game, I just don't think i'd have wanted to talk to them.
I was at sale game- can't remember a worse performance in 40 years tbh

It's far too simplistic to blame the hookers. On several occasions the Gloucester jumpers were in the air before the Bath ones on our throw. On other occasions the ball had gone before the jumper was in position. It wasn't overthrowing, it was timing. That is a fundamental error of the lifters and jumpers, not the thrower.

Looks like Francis picked up a serious quad injury, and it appears that we've run out of the £400k injury dispensation to replace him.

I'm more worried about 9 than 10. I think it's clear we will be without Spencer, Schreuder and Green this weekend.

Completely agree, was implying it wasn't just the hookers cos it was a shambles when both were on.
Tbf I think there were a few throwing errors but were the minority of the lost lineouts (one of dunns wouldn't have needed someone at the back about 9 ft tall to catch and the jumper was up)

Yeah those noises aren't positive on any of them which leaves us with TCS and lock.
At least we aren't playing someone good.... gulp.
I think Bailey at 10 with the options in the 23 of redpath and mojo would be fine.

The point of injury was very noticeable but how do you get a quad injury from taking a kick off? A quad tear would be a bad injury but how is that possible?

I imagine he'd been injured earlier and was carrying it. The kick would have stretched it.

He should be dominating games and a few years ago he would often have his opponents on toast (accept it's a combined effort at scrumtime). Tbf he took sale apart when he came on.
He is doing fine for us but would love to see a little bit more personally in terms of his influence on team mates and games.

Stuart only had 2/3 games and I'd say he was better this week than last. Give him a couple more games and then judge him.
Sadly after a couple more games he'll be off with England.

Two Bath players feature in The Times team of the week, my adoptee Jo Co and Will Stuart. JoCo I can understand but am a bit baffled by Stuart's inclusion. He was outstanding 2-3 seasons ago with his close quarter work from 5m but has been a passenger for a while now imho. For an England regular he doesn't impact a game in the way guys like Cole, Genge, Marler or Sinckler. Am I missing something?
This is more or less my view too, I'm afraid. I don't see Stuart in the same league as the other 4 listed and tbh, I struggle to understand why he's a starter for England.
Ditto Ewels when compared with Itoje, Launchbury, Lawes.
We seem to have had a lot of the same characters among our leadership group- thoughtful, quiet, get on with their own game. Beno, stuart, ewels, mcnally, underhill, faletau etc.

I don’t know. Stuart had a pretty decent tour in Australia and he was excellent last season.
Hmm. Define 'excellent'. He's obviously a top prop (who isn't even close to his prime tbf), it's just I don't ever recall seeing him influence a game in the way I have with those four. Maybe these barnstorming performances will start to appear in the coming years, or perhaps I'm too easily influenced by BT Sport pundits and their ability to fawn over one player for 80mins. I also get the 'benefit' of watching Stuart live most weeks.
It's the same with Ewels. He's played 30 games for England and is captain of a Prem rugby club (just), so obviously a good player held in high regard by his peers. I have just never seen a performance from him where I've thought 'wow'.
Bar Underhill (when fit), who was our last international player we could really say pulls up metaphorical trees for club and country? Probably going back to JJ, Ford, Watson in 2014/15 and that was only really for a season.

I think this is the key part. These are obviously quality players but we couldn't extract the best from them in a way that, say, Sarries could from their assembled stars. I don't think Premiership form is a good barometer of international quality but, either way, there are players of immense talents that we don't get anything like the best from.
Some like Stuart are playing perfectly well, though not dominant, and are in the top tier of their position. Some you can see their appeal and potential (JoCo) and then some, like JJ, have just fallen off a cliff performance-wise and that's not changed in a long-time.

Ah well it was good to have him for a couple of games, no brainer for him to choose Sale or Stade instead of Bath.
Turns out there are one or two half-decent players who fancy a crack at the challenge of playing for Bath, eh, OB?

Well that’s certainly a surprise for me, not sure why Lawrence signed but after his performance last weekend I’m delighted.

We don't know if Sale made him an offer or if that was just agent talk or media speculation.
Assuming they did make an offer...
Would you prefer to live in Bath or Manchester?
Would you prefer to be first choice 13, playing alongside your best mate and with a load of your closest friends, or sit on a bench week in, week out?
Which of these options would be most likely to help you further your international ambitions?
It's not that hard to understand really.

If I was 23 years old, its no contest. Manchester is a great city for young people. Bath is a great City for blue rinsers and tourists. Boring as hell for a person of that age, even the students stay in their oldfield park homes and party.

I don't think that he would be on the bench much at any Premiership club given his quality.

Yes - absolutely. For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not suggesting Will Stuart saves his best for England, isn't passionate, holds back for Bath etc etc. I just wish we'd see the kind of performances from our England boys that justifies why EJ constantly picks/plays them.
Eddie has a helluva pool of players to choose from, so they're doing something right to be top of the class. Perhaps an upturn in fortune will see these players producing more dominant performances. Feels like it's coming but I won't hold my breath this weekend (although saying that you can still stand out in a losing team)!
I always found JCs recent selection by England odd, but he seems to coming back to form.
Underhill no debate

It has been a little while, but I thought it was a dump, much preferred Liverpool which is a fantastic city. You’re right though I’m probably not going to go to a nightclub again.

The comment came as a result of it being suggested that Bath could attract a player wanted by Sale because Bath is a better city to live in-I wasn't compiling my 'Top 10' cities! I merely noted that Manchester has a lot of appeal. A friend of mine had to relocate to York recently and hated it. He's since moved to Liverpool and loves it there. Tenuously linked jtf, but whilst I recognise it's a case of each to their own, perhaps you could explain why so many people live in Nebraska when the USA has so many lovely regions to live in?!
I once drove from Kansas City to Lincoln, Nebraska in the autumn (it sounds far but its actually only about 4 hours!). It was the very definition of "bleak". But the people at either end were absolutely lovely.
