PUSH YOUR LUCK. BATH v LONDON IRISH
Redpath: reminder
By PG Tips
February 14 2023
Bath must push their luck and go for broke if they are to beat London Irish this Saturday. A home win against the Exiles would have been a confident coaching team target at the start of the season, but after a shaky start Irish have improved dramatically, taking at least a point from each of the last 7 matches and playing some thrilling attacking rugby on the way. In round 4 they humbled Bath at the GTech, blitzing to a 35-3 half time lead before a late revival. Can Bath find the defence to resist and the attack to triumph at home?
International calls will impact both clubs’ selections. Irish will lose their 2 most potent strikers, Hassall-Collins and Arundell to England, while Bath must do without Lawrence (and most likely Dunn.) Lively Scots scrum half Ben White and Italians Danilo Fischeti at prop and Luca Morisi in the centre should theoretically be available, but not having trained with the club for 2 weeks may not be risked as starters, or even in the 23, especially the latter 2 after the attritional nature of their Twickenham experience last weekend.
Those absences should not give the home side false hopes. Irish stand 3 places in the table (and 7 points) above Bath for a reason. Their pack, built on a pragmatic front row, hard-carrying locks and predatory loose forwards are swift, aggressive and relentless in seizing possession and territory. Creevy, Coleman, Pearson and Cunningham-South can be expected to carry aggressively into Bath territory to put their backs on the front foot. Paddy Jackson, one of many fine Irish fly halves, exiled from the national squad for non- rugby reasons knows how to control a game, Bernhard Janse van Rensburg at centre can bash across the gain line in the current fashion for a 12 (an area in which Bath, without Lawrence could be lacking) and Michael Dykes announced his arrival with a hat trick of tries against Harlequins 3 weeks ago. Bath will need to be on their mettle to disrupt the fluency and tempo of Irish’s attack.
Better news could come for Bath from the medical room. Obano and McNally have already returned to action, while Roux and Coetzee should also be ready, so boosting forward strength in depth. Gabriel Hamer -Webb was named as targeting a late January return to action and hopefully Tom de Glanville’s hand injury has cleared up to allow him to take a part. Bath, like Irish have taken at least a point from a run of 8 Premiership ties extending back to their first win of the season over Saints in late October. Their last outing, at Sale, was heartening and heart-breaking in equal measure, a dramatic comeback from 22-3 down to lead only flattering to deceive as Reed’s last ditch try snatched away the win. Discipline (3 yellow cards) was the Achilles heel on that occasion as so often.
Discipline, especially in defence will have been the watchword in training but I hope that Joe Maddock will have encouraged the leaders and decision makers to chance their arm (judiciously, at the right moments) in attack. To win Bath must not just contain but subdue. They should strive for tries whenever the chance appears. That means aggression in contact, quicker breakdown ball and faster service from Spencer. He will want Bailey to show the ambition and distribution of his first few starts in Blue, Black and White and Redpath to remind the Scots’ selectors of his pedigree. If these three can provide penetration, Joseph, Cokanasiga and McConnochie can provide the punch.
London Irish have not needed the legendary “luck of the Irish” much at home this season, but the lady has so far deserted them away from home. The final piece of the jigsaw is the home crowd, worth several points if engaged and encouraging from the start. With the faithful behind them, Bath must push their luck for a victory to cheer us all.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Morozov, Annett, Rae, McNally, Attwood, Hill, Underhill, Bayliss. Spencer (Capt.), Bailey. McConnochie, Redpath, Joseph, Cokanasiga. Gallagher.

Would be very surprised to see it being a 5/3 bench split. I would love to see TDG back but think we will see 2 locks on the bench.
Really no excuses in this game team is nearing full strength had time off so now we need to start building momentum for the run in.
Would be surprised to see Adam Coleman as the arm injury sustained v Quins looked pretty serious.
They will still be dangerous - step up Ratuniyarawa -or perhaps Ed Scragg who was to have joined Bath but found that his contract had been amended at the last minute.

Thought I saw a tweet that he is one of those that have been released back to their clubs.
It's only a 3/4 day camp isn't it?
Would be madness to chuck him in against Wales with no game for bath (not ruling it out!)
That seems to have disappeared but I would not count on Stuart being available.

Like the look of that 23 pgt...
Wonder if any news on Barbeary? All has gone quiet on his injury although reports seemed to point to it being worse than initially suspected. Can't wait to see him alongside Hill and Underhill.

I'm interested in something Borthwick said about Chessum - that the front row love it when he is scrummaging behind them. Something similar was said about Itoje. Neither is as heavy or taller than McNally - but, as with everything, technique/strength/effectiveness aren't directly correlated to size.
Doesn't Ribbans get similar accolades?

Hadn't heard the chessum, itoje, ribbans comments.
Chessum has the makings of a serious player I think.

Both of them do! Lewis Chessum and Ollie Chessum.
Lewis had a great u20s game as well.

Interesting that Francis gets the nod ahead of Bailey. Presume this means he and Spencer will kick it in the air a lot. Honestly, given their quality, wouldn't mind a 12-9 win, with the forwards coming off the bench to lock in 4 points. Might be damp, which should suit our power compared to their pace.
Agree with Malco, no excuses.

Ted Hill rested? Shame about the continuing 6/2 - would like to see Mojo/TdG on the bench, but other than that good and GREAT to see Beno and Will's names on the same team sheet.
Maybe Hill being rested in prep for Bristol?

V strong 23- about as strong as you will ever get realistically (only a handful of players missing who would be challenging for a spot in the 23 really.. boyce, ewels, hill, barbeary, lawrence, muir).
Irish are a v good team but if we are serious about becoming a force next season we should be starting to win home games when you can name a squad of that strength- loads of good, available players excluded like spencer, coetzee, mojo, tdg.
Handy to have all these options with a 6 day turnaround for briz- imagine will be a decent amount of rotation, esp up front. Sadly think we will lose stuart if sinckler struggling.

Is he staying? He is close to 33 with a contract up at the end of this season, perhaps he is giving Landy space in the same way he has done with Ewan Richards. Rebuild his kicking or use up Francis' remaining contract. I can't help thinking there is something else happening at 10.
On the Offy at 10 there is Francis, Bailey, Donaghue, Harris and Worboys (on loan) we let Billy Searle go without using him. After Bailey who is still very young the others seem unlikely to feature at fly half. Are we waiting on someone?

No idea what the plans are tbh for next season.
Totally appreciate Bailey is a bit out of nick but I just find francis as an option v hard to get excited about. From a selfish perspective I would rather my money was spent on seeing Bailey (and the players francis generally fails to bring into the game)- hopefully he pleasantly surprises me.

Richards has been injured for the past 6 weeks. As for Francis/Bailey- yes, I expect Francis to move on. All the more reason IMHO to ensure Bailey has game time under his belt before he is suddenly needed.Russell will not start next season as he will be at the RWC, so Bailey needs to be ready for the task for the first 2 months.
I am also interested in Tom de Glanville's long absence. I do understand he had a hand injury but there has been no mention of him for a while. Gallagher deserves the starting spot but TdG has much to offer in attack, can cover wing and at a push centre/fly half and if gallagher is injured we look thin at the back.

Maybe the weather forecast influenced the selection at 10? Not as windy as feared earlier in the week.
Need a big one from Piers, and the forwards can’t let Creevy get under their skin.
Weather looks reasonable, really looking forward to this.
COYB.
Means he doesn't get a chance for game time and therefore no realistic chance to challenge Gallagher.
Fair play to Gallagher, has stayed fit and played great

To be honest Charlie, I don’t care where I have to follow the ball as long as Bath win.
As for Bailey, his kicking isn’t Premiership standard so not surprised to see him on the bench.
Praying for a strong start for once so that the bench don't have to play catch up and we put an 80 minute performance in.

Fair enough OB, I am a pragmatist to a degree and do enjoy a win no matter how it comes.
I just hope we are clever enough to work out the best way to get it on the hoof a bit quicker- too often this season we try an approach, concede a unassailable lead then change approach and look much better.
I think generally when the weather is half decent then not using the likes of cam, jj, coko, rmc and Gallagher ball in hand occasionally feels an error.
As always it will need the likes of beno, stuart, coko and underhill to carry strongly to get some front foot ball. Do feel hill is a miss in terms of backrow balance- thought they may be tempted by coetzee but bayliss and reid have been consistently excellent over last few season.

Looking forward to this, I hate to even think this but this starting XV is Bath without the Worcester influence. I hope the soft underbelly of last season doesn't return.

Mild reservations on a similar theme this team being packed with returning talent is precisely the kind of pack that Orlando Bailey should have been able to benefit from. He has played behind failing forwards fo a season and a half with only an occasional win to prop up his young confidence.
I sincerely hope he gets at least 30 minutes to show what he can do behind a pack going forward.
Assuming our pack does go forward of course!

I was going to write in detail my feelings about that performance but they couldn't be bothered and neither can I.
Then there was the rugby.
Not sure why I bother spending £1k - £1.5 k per season (taking ST and pre and during match refreshments into account)
Simply not worth the outlay.
Adopted Players: All of the little blighters!!!
I personally thought the ref seemed to ref one team in the second half and that Jackson went down football style like shot. But we should not be giving the ref the opportunity to issue a yellow. He actually said our guy was late and no arms. I think he was late yes but was trying to pull out hence no arms wrapped.
The games is such that rules get changed every season as do referee interpretations. This is making it complicated to the point that referees and not players decide games.
I truly think that premiership rugby is in crisis.

We are too accepting of players who continue to let us and themselves down.

We cannot fall back on blaming the referee. He did make some poor decisions but. Bath players made far more. It’s also pointless trying to pinpoint players who let us down. It’s a collective malaise not just a few individuals.

Quick one on Ben Spencer though - it's not him, it's us. Our (once great, now depressingly poor) Club seems to have a habit of bringing in exciting players and coaching it out of them.
Give Lawrence and Russell a few months and they'll soon be as slow, ponderous and predictable as the rest. Absolute shower.
Quote:I wasn’t necessarily blaming the ref entirely. I did say that the team should not give him the opportunity to make the decision.Bath Hammer
I do think that collective responsibility is a cop out, it all has to start with the individuals taking responsibility for their own discipline.
As far as the “team”” goes there is nothing positive to say. We are rightly bottom of the table and anyone at the ground today saw that JvG has had no positive impact on performance. We are no better than Hooper’s team and are basically a championship team.
The ref had no. Eating on the outcome, but he was absolutely useless in every aspect of his performance. Like Bath he should also be in the Championship.
If I were Finn Russell I’d exercise my get out clause now before it’s too late.

Anyone expecting miracles from Russell during his 8 or so games a season is deluded. He’s here for the money, no other reason. Not suggesting he won’t try, wouldn’t be that disrespectful. Yet another BC ‘head in the clouds’ signing.

If we have a sports psychologist then he/she should go as well and not convinced the attack coach should be kept on either.
We need people brought in to the club with high standards as the cozy don’t worry about winning trophies mantra at Bath isn’t acceptable.
Be interesting to see if JvG thinks similarly. I also think JvG should either do the DoR or Head coach not both. We need a HC who can make the other coaches accountable.

Penalties aplenty. LI were there to take.
What is worrying is that was pretty much our first XV.
The league won’t be ringfenced forever. A lot of pressure on Finn Russell.

Judging by the lack of progress in our attacking play one of our replacement coaches has achieved nothing whatsoever. It’s embarrassing to see our backs stuttering to a halt or running laterally with no cohesion. I expressed the view that Hatley should move on & I think that has proved to be right. The ill discipline & poor professional standards which plagued us last season is still present throughout the team. It is bound to be difficult to change the mindset when the previous head coach is still around. It’s also obvious that Charteris is not cutting the mustard as lineout coach, though it’s possible that this is largely down to Dunn going through a nightmare throwing season. I can see your point about appointing a separate director of rugby but I think that is a lower priority.

I would say the pressure is actually on our failing coaches rather than a player yet to join the mediocrity of Bath rugby.
Sale in Sept and today. I thought today was marginally less appalling. Based on the trajectory between those 2 games we may not be awful at rugby by 2058.
The one element of our game that has consistently infuriated me for about 7 years is that we can't throw an accurate pass 5 yds that doesn't check the recipient.
I think the majority of our passes today were inaccurate. I find that utterly staggering from professional rugby players.
Having a completely failing lineout is merely months old so can probably tolerate that for a few more years.
Scrabbling around for a few positives- as often it's a few individuals/individual moments.... thought beno carried well, underhill carried and tackled well, coko looks like he is enjoying his rugby again in attack and defence. That's about it
+ 1
Yeah, there is some mediocrity - FH, in particular but how do we manage to make to llhe quality we have add up to precisely nothing.
I like JvG, and he's definitely building a better squad, but full houses with multiple bigwigs are not occasions to squander...
Apart from Sam and Miles who I thought did well, everyone else was below par. Strangely enough the quickest ball came when Gallagher was playing scrummie during Spencer’s bin time. As others have said, the LO was awful, again, how do we expect to do anything when we get the fundamentals wrong week in week out.
Not an excuse for our shambolic performance, but the referee was, IMO terrible.
Thankfully the Raven pie managed to hit the spot.
Quote:Hawksburn
In all my years supporting Bath, I cannot recall a more depressing or inept performance. I get more satisfaction from a parking ticket at RUH!
Was dreadful - forget issues about the line out, where was the intent to play and entertain? And not just for the sake of it but Prem teams these days won't submit to an average pack bashing away endlessly or kicking ball away having got some momentum.
£77 to sit in the wind and rain in the Easy Stand to watch only one team play good rugby (that being Irish). Woah!
My MotM - no. We were just collectively too stupid for words.
... IMHO, of course.

I am sure they watch all the other televised games don't they look on and think I would like tot do that/
I would tell the coaches I want to play like Quins, LI, Saints and if you don't want to then I am off!
LI had no issue of hooking their 9 after 30mins, Bath would never do that. Lets be honest perhaps thats what a few of the players need to shake it up. I thought Annett was unlucky to be benched after Sale. He needs to start on friday. The best attacking I have seen this year at the rec was with Warboys at 10 against saints. why not give him another go.

Might be worthwhile checking back with him to see when he’s going to start work!
JvG seems to think there were only 3 issues with yesterday’s performance!
"I thought the first 38 minutes we did really well - but (there are) three very simple things.
"If you concede three yellow cards, if you kick the ball and miss in front of the sticks and if you lose how many lineouts we've lost, you're going to lose the game.
"So no issue with the effort. We've got to be better in those three areas."
I’d suggest there are more than 3 areas we need to do better in and he’s had all season to get them sorted and yet we are as bad as last season.
One of the many things that irritated me was how easy LI scored immediately after our try. Why is it so easy for teams to get round our defence? What on earth is the defence coach up to, this is yet another problem we’ve had all season.
.
Like looking like you know what you are aiming to do when you have the ball.
So comical when we are camped on opponents lines picking and driving. They generally don't even bother fanning out as they know 1) we don't have the vision to do anything different 2) if we did the passes would be behind the man and they could scramble.
It's soooooo far from the experience of following a mccullum / stokes led England cricket team. Bath literally suck all positivity and enjoyment from you and as others have said surely the players take no pleasure from days like yest.
There is no relegation so why do we play like we are scared of our own shadows....
It just seems that yet again we have got the wrong coaching setup.

Can’t compare how Sale lost with how Bath lost. Also look at the table to see how well Sale are coached in comparison to how poorly Bath are coached.
We had to laugh, when big Joe turned to the crowd after yet another spurned chance with him in acres of space in the first half and shrugged his shoulders. We might as well not play any wingers as they never get the ball out wide in space.
It is too easy to blame the coaches, however deserving such criticism might be, but the players have got to accept their responsibilities too and to take on the need to change the plans, mood, culture, team work, or whatever it is that is producing this weekly turgid, dross.
Perhaps they might start by introducing themselves to their fellow team mates, share a curry and pint, play with a smile on the face and a carefree give-it-a-gung-ho game plan.
We still might lose, and I will still be £100 poorer, but at least I might be entertained.

Said it before, if you are a fyhalf that kicks that's basically an insult and does nothing to boost confidence.

I watched on t.v. Sale v Saints yesterday and then had recorded Quins v Glos. Both full on enjoyable proper rugby games, close results and two teams fighting for every tactical advantage and point.
For years now I have quietly thought, "next season that will be Bath boys strutting their stuff and frightening the opposition".
I just genuinely feel sad for all the comments above, who are from regular loyal knowledgeable (if a bit biased at times) contributors. Many have had season tkts for decades. What on earth (yet again) is going on? What do they do all week and why can't the Coaching staff motivate and galvanise them? Is there still 'interference'? Such a waste of talent, work and also cash.

It’s laughable but at the same time very “Bath” that we’ve hired a kicking coach instead of a skills coach.
Said it before, if you are a fyhalf that kicks that's basically an insult and does nothing to boost confidence.
I disagree SW, it should be viewed as motivational. Bottom line is Bailey's kicking for whatever reason isn't PL standard. If this affects Bailey's confidence then he isn't mentally strong enough.
Best thing for him to do is go away and spend a lot of his own time practising his kicking whilst staying away from Bath's kicking coach who has been a disaster.
Does anybody on this forum have close contact with any players who would confide in some insight into such continuous poor form ?. Malco ?
After many years as a season ticket holder this is the first season i have actually seriously thought about not renewing ours, sadly. One man ( Finn Russell) ) cannot rescue this situation on his own.
I was actually surprised Tom Dunn was not hooked in the 2nd quarter ! Although probably not all his fault.

I know last season was abject from a Defence point of view but remember it was the youngsters in the back line who were creating chances. Orlando 10, Ojomo 12 & Cam Redpath 13, and De Glanville ripping it up and playing with smiles on their faces.
Unfortunately we’ve lost that Joie de vivre

There is a rot, a malaise at the heart of Bath Rugby that no amount of recruitment, coaches or players can fix. We need to be relegated, we need every international player to leave and we need to just start again at the bottom of English Rugby
Underhill was class yesterday & I’ll keep Lawrence!
For me it’s the lack of ambition. I’d rather watch Quins & London Irish at the mo…. Sadly
I have thought the same for a couple of seasons now. Question is would you you follow a ragbag of 3rd rate pros, ex-pros, journeymen/students from the old commonwealth doing their European tour and willing talented amateurs in the Championship or national leagues, never mind South West 1 or whatever. Personally I can say yes because bath will always be my club but most will exit to Bristol or Exeter and Bath will forever be a small insignificant local club looking to regain the proud identity that is now long gone and will take some time to recover once divested of its commercial existence. Can you live with that?
We'd love to have the kind of consistent numbers both of fans and funds you have but we're probably better off for having to make canny signings and rely on the academy for our best players. As much as people may have been dismissive of Kidney and Kiss, we've been consistently getting better since they joined us by developing the squad to be more than the sum of our parts.
From an outside perspective, it just doesn't seem that Bath manages to get the best of everyone. The boost you had from your Worcester players seems to have subsided but the fact that new players came in and were starting (even allowing for injuries) may suggest that the issues were about being at Bath longer term.
Quote:Lazyboy346
As an Irish fan, you have a great squad that's well funded and well supported. You just somehow don't seem to have found a way to make it work on the pitch.
It's quite simple really, we have suffered from poor coaching for years, it's continued this season and will probably be the same next season. Added to this there appears to be limited real desire to win trophies within the club which results in a team rooted to the bottom of the table.
Every now and then we sign a big name player (enter Finn Russell), but I think we all realise nothing much will change with regard to league position.
Our lineout, however, is an absolute disgrace. And on Saturday our fitness and effort levels were too. Too many players walking back into the defensive line after making a tackle, there was zero energy in the last ten minutes to try and chase down anything from the game. These are basics of the game, they should be minimum expectations.
It's a real two steps forward, two steps back situation.
Quote:hasta
What is very frustrating is that there are aspects of our game that have notably improved this year - defence and fitness. Attack hasn't come on, but we were basically prepped for that.
I agree Hasta that some aspects of our defence are better, for example inside our 22m and in particular around our 5m line. However defence in the middle of the pitch and out wide is as bad as ever. Teams stroll through our midfield or wander around the outside with ease.
The lineout is as you say embarrassing and has to result in a change of coach.
Quote:Pop stand fan
On a slightly positive note we’ve scored more points and conceded fewer than Bristol this season. Beat them on Friday and we’ll probably be two places off the bottom this time next week.
I think I can see the flaw in your plan...
... IMHO, of course.

I think there is a complete disconnect between our pack and the backs, especially in the red zone. We just keep hammering through the same old picks and goes and we don't seem to be able to play what's in front of us (as the old saying goes), it's almost we go into some form of tunnel vision without seeing any potential space out wide.
The lineout has been our Achilles heel for so long, it absolutely beggars belief why it still hasn't been sorted. To lose so many lineouts in attacking positions like we did yesterday is unacceptable. I think it's time Charteris is replaced as lineout coach as his methods clearly haven't demonstrated into acceptable rewards on the pitch.
That's my two pence worth.
I watched the game from the East stand yesterday. Before the game, I thought it would be a close one simply because not too many Bath players were away-balanced against a resurgent LI side of late.
Although Bath doesn't seem as bad as last season, the hoisted kicks, slow ball from the 9 and numerous knock-ons killed off a win for Bath.
Quite where the problem is I really don't know. The club have a popular, accessible ground continued support and financial backing.
A big problem, imho, is our lack of quality at 10. We don’t have a guy who truly wants to boss the game and demands Spencer give it to him. A lot goes off of 9 because our 10s aren’t good enough. Sounds harsh- but I’m increasingly thinking it’s one of our core problems. Id start Bailey v Bristol but only as he’s the least bad option.
I’ll be there on Friday night shouting my head off and the game takes on added importance, a dog fight, a ‘relegation’ battle. Of course, I hope we win but I more hope we play with some guts, some confidence. Don Macpherson has his work cut out - but have to say that even he seems to underdelivering at present. I’m inclined to still believe that we are still working ourselves out of the hole we were in last season, so poor performances are to be expected from the new regime. But I’m losing patience. Lose to a poor Bris team and there will be even fewer excuses.
One minor point - why was given a McCon yellow after they scored their try? I thought an advantage wasn’t penalised if a try is scored (‘double jeopardy’ penalty try aside). Or has there been a law change?
Rudderless, pedestrian, poor defensive alignment, badly executed set piece… I could go on. I was chatting to someone before the game and said I didn’t mind losing, as long as it was an entertaining game and we looked up for it. It wasn’t. We didn’t.
Francis is a brave player, but he’s not setting any of our backs into space and we took the ball static really regularly. ‘World Class Basics’ anyone?
Cokanasinga should go looking for the ball more often. He needs to ‘kick the door down’ - he only ever looks effective when he’s popping up at 12 more frequently. I thought he looked disinterested yesterday to be honest- although I’m probably biased as my base level is ‘consistently over-rated’ as far as he is concerned!
Underhill missed a few tackles yesterday, which is unlike him, but he put himself about a lot. I’m going to watch it back tonight, but pitchside, it looked like he got exposed because nobody else was aligned and even he can’t defend an entire line on his own.
Second row looked cumbersome and slow yesterday- Attwood looks knackered and McNally looked short of match fitness (being generous). Roux didn’t appreciably add anything as far as I could tell.
Overall, the team looks utterly bereft of confidence and terrified of failure. That’s not a positive environment - we probably need to grind a couple of wins out to help the former, but that plan didn’t seem to work.
Quote:charlieboa
Agree re second row- think we need some new blood there personally
I think we forget that this is JvG's first season, he clearly left a rugby legacy at Munster who beat Ospreys 58-3 on Saturday.
I think, or rather, I hope that he has a massive clear out having seen what he has to work with both on the coaching and playing front.
As many know I go to a fair number of the Uni games and follow the U20 stuff and have been quite impressed with Craig Lilley, Mark Lilley and Ryan Davis. There is no doubt that when these lads leave the academy they a very good at the line outs and mauling from them. It all goes wrong in the senior squad!
When Orlando Bailey was in the England U20 behind a decent pack he made breaks, ran the game and had a really good kicking percentage, now look at him.
It's all quite disheartening.

Francis was very poor IMO (he isn't one of the players I mentioned above though). A lot was said on comms about him chasing down his kicks but most of his kicking was god awful and allowed Irish to counter attack.
Wouldn't put the lineout blame on Dunn, they read our calls. We should have shortened the line and changed the picture but I guess we were desperate to get an attacking maul. Rather worrying that we weren't able to adapt, you wonder what sort of messages were coming down from the coaching box and why they were so ineffective in fixing the line out. I'm sure our lineout was just as bad in the reverse fixture, maybe they're able to read McNally.
Anyways, my biggest frustrating with that game was how we attacked off a scrum 5m out, almost in the middle of the pitch just 10 minutes in to the first half. A scenario where it's highly likely to score as it's almost impossible to defend. Bath however decide to do one of the worst strike moves I've ever seen. Zero ambition, no deception, Spencer makes it soo obvious that their 9 drifts before the balls out of the scrum giving Irish a numbers advantage, we take the ball so flat and wide there's no time to do anything before JJ is smashed backwards. If we're going to go with something simple and safe why pass to JJ against Vans Rensburg, instead of Cokanasiga against Jackson on the other side of the scrum. Infact I have no idea why they left our best attacker out of the move completely. Absolutely dreadful...

This is not a new thing. I remember a wet Friday night game at Sale a few years back, Jamie Roberts stood at 12 (who has "a wet Friday night at Sale" written through him like a stick of rock) and he did not receive ONE PASS all night. Not. One. Pass. It beggared belief.

I do think that blaming Dunn entirely for Baths lineout woes is harsh, it is a complex arrangement with many moving parts, from calling it in the first place to delivering the ball and the locks being lifted up there. Sure there was one I think which wasn't straight but most of the others the timing looked a bit off, which is a whole group (and lineout coaching) issue. Get Luke C out and promote Catty who is making the age grade linouts purr.
Agree with the comments about Spencers delivery - he dominated the oppo scrum half in all areas apart from quick ball (potentially his most important). The 10 situation is a bit of a mess at the moment, with one aged 12 and OB seemingly well out of sorts.
Great to see Beno back into his stride so quickly, that was about my only positive of the day.

For me I think Ojomoh and TDG need to be playing a part in all games from now. 2 of our most creative backs in their position who can create opportunities from no-where. We have lacked basic creativity and it’s no coincidence it’s happened since they’ve gone out the team.
Interesting - totally disagree with this. Cam R is (for me) a far better 12 than Max O, particularly in defence. Gallagher has been one of the consistent performers. I would put most of the backs issues at the feet of 9, 10 and JJ. Cam R at 12 and Ollie L at 13 could be one of the best centre partnerships in the Prem.

Ojomoh last game showed massive improvement in defence notably against Sale and I’d say last few games we’ve looked a better attacking side with Ojomoh. His passing his top tier. 12 Ojomoh and 13 Redpath needs to happen for me. I agree Gallagher has been one of our most consistent backs and would definitely still have him in the 15, but feel TDG and Gallagher could swap well in game between 11 and 15.

Inclined to agree Matt, if 9 and 10 aren't delivering that its a bit irrelevant as to who is outside them.
I'm still worried about the 10 position. Next season we will as specialist fly halves just Russell and Bailey. Bailey has had his confidence eroded playing nearly all his senior rugby behind a failing pack. I only partially accept the "mental toughness" argument. Player confidence is a lot down to man management from the coaching team . To get rubbish ball consistently at 10 takes its toll.
I don't subscribe to the argument that we have Redpath, Mojo, TDG etc who can play 10, they are just converted backs. If we are honest Piers Francis is in the same bracket as a centre com 10.
We let a proper 10 go without a game, (Billy Searle) I think we need a proper 10 to buffer Bailey who is under developed talent. Bailey was a different player in the U20s and was in the England senior squad. Something has gone seriously wrong there and the club might lose him if its not sorted.

What about Lawrence?
In relation to Gallagher he seems to be key to Bath currently taking the penalties to touch close to the line irrespective of whether Francis or Bailey is playing. Another reason why the line out needs sorting as we are wasting that opportunity!

I agree with this but the problem with Bath is rarely on paper - it's usually the 'practice'.
All the more frustrating is that we seem to extract some good performances from different players (e.g. Gallagher, Underhill this week) and yet we still put in bad performances.
Finn Russell, Cam Redpath, Ollie L looks an international class centre partnership. But the team need to start meeting the basic level required from 1-15, even if only a handful do the exceptional.

Yes when Lawrence is back he walks into the 13 shirt. But until then I’d like to see both Ojomoh and Cam play. We will most likely have the rest of the 6N without Lawrence which is a fair while.
Definitely agree Gallagher’s kicking in game and for touch is some of the best I’ve ever seen for a 15, definitely a big part of JVG plans but do feel he is a bit one dimensional at times. Whether that is him or the gameplan I do not know.
1. Win line out ball even of you throw to 2 every time. get it in the hands of the 9 very quickly.
2. Flyhalf - O Bailey takes it very flat at pace.
3. Cam Redpath plays with Max Ojomoh or Lawrence when he is available.
4. Get the ball rapidly to Mconnochie or JC at pace.
5. Backs all wrap around and offload, do not let the ball die.
6. Spencer takes the ball on every now and then.........at least 1 in 5 to keep opposition honest.
7. Bailey kicks periodically, particularly high and long for Mconnochie who is very good on high ball.
8. Bailey/Redpath chip and run now and then. Chip with a view of catching the ball and running on .
9. No 9 cuts back box kicks by 80%
10. Kick for the corner being the every time option.........except very rarely going for goal.
11. When on opposition line a few, les sthan 5 pick and goes and then whip out wide with JC or RM cutting back off centre to score......
12. No errors committed that incur a yellow card...........ITS NOT WORTH IT AND IN THE MODERN GAME YOU GET CAUGHT and the opposition score. Default one weeks wages paid to the Bath Foundation.
If they at least did this we would see a more interesting spectacle......and who knows!

Beginning to think we didn't go far enough with the Wuss imports. Perhaps things would be different if we had kept hold of Shillcock, Searle and signed any others without a club, appointed Diamond and rebranded as Bath Warriors
There was something so right at Worcester that is so lacking in Bath
You are so right. If you recall the final game of last season was away to Worcester. A win would have kept us from finishing bottom. Played well in first half leading 27-17 in the 49th minute then Worcester showed their fighting spirit and skill outscoring us 6 tries to 4 , final score a resounding loss 27-43. Annett, Hill and Shillcock played, now he is someone we should have nabbed permanently. That was an embarrassing performance that condemned us to bottom place, the difference in spirit and will to win was palpable. That was on the field. What highlighted Bath's troubles off the field was the sight of several of the Bath squad including first teamers sat near me dressed in Hawaian shirts on some sort of stag do, they were drunk and their boorish behaviour was disgraceful. Even some Bath on field players looked disgusted. I don't think the Worcester fans realised the group was associated with Bath, the stewards identified their behaviour and positioned themselves alongside them. Barracking Finn Smith taking a conversion was so disrespectful. The Bath management should never have allowed this to happen, for such an important game I would have expected them to be on club duty dressed in Bath blazers or tracksuits, sober and supporting their team mates not on some end of term pi$$ up. After such a awful season I decided to put this behind me and give the benefit of doubt to the incoming management changes but I'm starting to feel again that all is not well in the camp. The same lack of fight and attitude against Irish reminded me of that Worcester game.
I always rated him and was delighted when we got him after Worcester's demise.
I am horrified to read what you wrote above FA.........a disgrace.

Cokanasiga is great, when internationals are approaching and England are sniffing around. Now that he's missed his shot at the 6N, it feels like he's back to not bothering much. At least he actually took a high ball on Sat, he's normally awful in the air I don't think I'd ever seen him win the ball like that, until the weekend.

I don’t see how that’s fair at all really. He did the opposite every carry he looked lively and made metres whenever he got the ball. This season has been one of his best in a long long time as he’s shown a different side to his game.

We had only just conceded a yellow card. Jackson had kicked the ball out on the full. There was absolutely nothing to be gained in any contact with him. So why the blooky heck follow on with a clear, late shoulder charge in open play that was only going to result in another yellow card
WHY?????

Ah the joys of spell checker.. 😁
Going back to forward passes the law states that a pass must not travel towards the opposition goal line. There is no mention of momentum or direction of the hands. If you are running forward pass the ball backwards and it will be fine. It is also much easier to officiate particularly on TV for tries as it is obvious if the player catches the ball in front of where it was passed from. Impact of momentum and direction of the hands are much more subjective.

In fairness if you go back to our last 3 Prem results before the LI game we came within last play of beating Sale away. We quite comfortably beat Falcons at home and we got a LBP at Sandy Park
None of those were 'easy training runs' for the opposing teams
I'm just hoping the performance last weekend was bit of a blip. That we can put the lineout right in training and we can fix the yellow fever for cards
Completely agree with this. I am a Bristol fan as was quite concerned when I saw the Newcastle team for Friday night. Carreras and Radwan must be one of the most dangerous set of wingers in the league, that combined with the two Argentine's in the centre (although one of them subsequently withdrew) and Penny at full back was quite a daunting backline. However their half back pair of Young and Connon were both way off the pace and they hardly saw the ball.
