FIND SOME TEETH! LEICESTER TIGERS v BATH
Hill: verve & power
By PG Tips
February 28 2023
Bath must find some teeth to have any chance of victory against Leicester at Welford Road on Saturday. Sadly, their last two performances have left the “hard to beat” defensive ambition looking hollow, while missed goal kicks and lack of bite have made their attack a paper tiger. Leicester on the other hand have notched 8 tries in their last 3 outings – against tougher opposition. Blue, black and white victories at Mattioli Woods are as rare as hens teeth. Saturday threatens to be no exception.
Tigers have fared well in recent weeks despite significant numbers absent on international duty. They will probably be without England men Cole, Chessum, Van Poortvliet, Watson and Steward and both sets of coaches will be interested to see if Heyes and Ben Youngs are also kept back by Twickenham. Tommy Reffell may return after his efforts for Wales, while Matt Scott seems to have been overlooked by a Scotland squad blessed with centre talent. Even without their current 6 Nation representatives, Tigers are replete with experience and pedigree, with a seasoning also of young talent. Up front look out for West, Montoya, Martin, Wells, Liebenberg, Wiese and the fast -improving Cracknell. Behind the scrum the experience of Brown, Ashton, Gopperth and Pollard looks tailor made to exploit any sloppy kicking by opponents. Perhaps they will also combine to conjure some space for Harry Potter to display a trick or two?
Bath will wait anxiously for the medical report, Quinn Roux and Joe Cokanasiga having both hobbled off early against Bristol. GJ van Velze gave his all in Roux’s place, but a return for Lee-Warner or Will Spencer looks likely. If Cokanasiga is not fit Ruaridh McConnochie or Will Butt could step in, but there is an argument for swapping Gallagher and De Glanville. Gallagher for once looked less comfortable on the wing last week and De Glanville’s pace and footwork might just tell further out. Several players are due back from injury, notably loose forwards Barbeary, Hill & Coetzee as well as lock/flanker Ewan Richards. Well as Bath’s loose forwards have played recently, the balance for this match could do with a bit of heft from one of these. My choice, if he is ready would be Hill whose verve and attitude is badly needed as much as his power.
Bath are trying to play a game similar to Tigers. The hosts though have had over two years to develop and perfect it under Steve Borthwick and his lieutenants, clawing their way to premiership triumph last campaign. In doing so they kicked their goals, a feat which has largely eluded Bath’s chosen kickers in the past two matches. They also have a more powerful and robust pack on which to base the game, supported by the wiles of their veteran halfbacks and backline players. They will be desperate to avenge their last gasp, one point defeat at the Rec last November and will be baring their teeth in preparation.
Bath could do well to think back to that evening. Trying to best Tigers at their own game in the jungle of Welford Road will not be enough. Some extra bite is needed to complement the "hard to beat" mantra. Bailey, Joseph and Butt all played key parts in the November victory, as did a little bit of adventure. Selecting those three and replicating that attitude, might just give Bath the teeth they need.
Possible Teams:
Bath: Obano, Annett, Stuart, Lee-Warner, Attwood, Hill, Underhill, Bayliss. Spencer (Capt.), Bailey. De Glanville, Redpath, Joseph, Butt. Gallagher.
Replacements:, Morozov, Dunn, Jonker, Van Velze, Reid. Schreuder, Francis, Ojomoh.
Leicester Tigers: West, Montoya, Heyes, Martin, Wells, Liebenberg, Cracknell, Wiese. B Youngs, Pollard. Potter, Gopperth, Scott, Ashton. Brown.
Replacements: Clare van Wyk, Hurd, Henderson, Reffell. Whitely, Atkinson, Simmons.

Feels like we are back at the Sarries away-type scenario - everyone expects a walloping, so why not step away from the 'difficult to beat' mantra and allow some of the younger backs like MoJo, Butt and Bailey the chance to express themselves.
Am sure Ben Spencer would appreciate more of a creative brief, and maybe Cloete from the start would give us a fighting chance at the breakdown.
Keeping the ball in hand a bit more would also save us from a bit less embarrassment when it comes to lineouts.
What is there to lose?

I anticipate there will be plenty of wailing and gnashing of teeth as we concede over 4 tries and score only one of our own.
The throat is too sore and the teeth too chipped for that after the last few seasons of being a Bath supporter. The most that I can manage after a Bath game now is lame resignation, half hearted shrug of the shoulders and a soft sigh.

Love the optimism with the 5/3 split but don’t see it happening anytime soon. Think Ojomoh deserves another start looked lively when playing at 12 and don’t see an issue there.
Reid has to start for me recently been a level above Bayliss and just so good everywhere. My predicted bench is
Annett, Morosov, Rae, Van Velze, Coetzee, Schreuder, Francis, Bayliss
Not what I want but seems like the way.

Fair point, maybe jj on bench....or butt
By foul means or fair, lady luck, blind blue ref or the dicing sporting Gods. We will win.
Dream it here first. Shake and roll them bones.
Glory be.
Took part in all aspects of training last week so will have done 2 full weeks by this game if all goes well.
We have so many backrowers and so little to play for now other than the glory of coming second from bottom there seems no point taking any even slight risks

I was in the hospitality on Friday evening for the Bristol game and he did an interview. He said hes ready to play now so i expect him to be on the bench on the weekend. Also Charlie Ewels was interviewed and he is back fully training with his expected return by of March. Watch this space.....
Would be fascinating to see if Charlie makes a difference to the lineout. Can't get much worse.
Assuming there is no cap issues with either playing this season. Hatley denied there was any cap issue in playing barbeary as soon as he is ready in the rugby paper.
I imagine willimas going having not played helped

With the benefit of hindsight, I'd have hooked Charteris, and installed Ewels as lineout coach for his period of rehab.
Also v different chipping in from the sideline to being in amongst it playing and training.
Interested to see how it plays out, as I say feels like he has nothing to lose. Comes back and improves, he is the messiah and we all know why he is so highly rated now...doesn't improve as everyone can go back to the seeming default of ' I don't understand why all the coaches love him'.. or 'it must be the lighters and hookers fault'

We'll probably deliver the performance of the season on Sunday. Or not. But I thought this Tweet from someone called Aaron Walsh was interesting - it's Bath all over:
"Inconsistent teams rely on external stimuli to perform, and if it is not there, the standards drop. Consistent teams drive the standards from within. They focus on themselves, have clear performance expectations, and create an edge around the commitment to those realities."
What language is this Aaron Walsh using then?

After the last two dreadful performances I can’t be bothered to think about this game. That’s where loss of hope eventuality leads.
Well think about it we must! That's what this thread is about. Looking forward to seeing the match day squad as so much was wrong about the tactics and performances of the last 2 games, Farleigh would have been a busy place this week, you would hope. Hope as BH alludes to, is all some of us have at the moment, I bought my tickets for Leicester and Northampton before the last 2 games so I go to them in hope rather than any positive expectation.

Bookies have Tigers 1/6 and Bath 6/1 for the win. That says it all to me [www.oddschecker.com]
I have a horrible feeling those odds could well equate to the tries scored
Head of Rugby Johann van Graan has made nine changes for Bath Rugby’s trip to Leicester Tigers in Round 19 of the Gallagher Premiership.
There are three alterations to the backline which started against Bristol Bears. Ruaridh McConnochie, Jonathan Joseph and Orlando Bailey are all recalled with Ben Spencer, Cameron Redpath, Matt Gallagher and Tom de Glanville continuing their starting roles.
The pack sees Tom Dunn and Will Stuart return to the front row alongside Beno Obano. The trio have only lined up five times from the beginning of a game together since the 2020 Premiership semi-final.
A fresh second row sees Josh McNally and GJ van Velze pair up while Fergus Lee-Warner lines up at blindside flanker for the first time in a Bath shirt. Number 8 Jaco Coetzee is selected from the outset and Sam Underhill retains the seven jersey.
On the bench, Alfie Barbeary is set for his first Bath appearance. The 22-year-old joined the Blue, Black and White on a long-term deal in November and has been working hard with the medical team to rehabilitate his hamstring since.
Bath Rugby: 15 Tom de Glanville, 14 Ruaridh McConnochie, 13 Jonathan Joseph, 12 Cameron Redpath, 11 Matt Gallagher, 10 Orlando Bailey, 9 Ben Spencer ©; 1 Beno Obano, 2 Tom Dunn, 3 Will Stuart, 4 Josh McNally, 5 GJ van Velze, 6 Fergus Lee-Warner, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Jaco Coetzee
Impact players: 16 Niall Annett, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 D’Arcy Rae, 19 Miles Reid, 20 Alfie Barbeary, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Max Ojomoh, 23 Chris Cloete

Still hate the 6-2. It's marginally better with Mojo who can at least cover both center and wing (and I guess theoretically 10).
Pack is a little odd not sure what on earth Reid has done to be dropped but the lineout clearly a focus point with FLW at 6.
Backline is very good Bailey finally at 10, just got to go for it
Strange to see 3 backrowers on the bench but so so exciting to see Barbeary.

I don't know much about GJvV, any observations?
We are always happy when we see the 23 on paper, we are just disappointed when that 23 is sh*t on the pitch. Not expecting anything different this week. Hoping for less that 6 lost line out on our own throws, which would be progress!

True but he can only cover one of those. Two down and we are over to a 9 or forward out in the wider backs

Apart from being wrong, stupid, facile and ineffective, splitting the bench 6-2 is pretty much the equivalent of ringing up Tigers' coaching team, and saying, 'I've just emailed you a copy of our gameplan - can you confirm you've got it, thanks?'

this would be the case if we were hoping to win, but given the objective is to lose by less than last year, focus on defence (even the backs) and reduce tries conceded it probably doesnt matter.

There was I thinking our gameplan was a bit rubbish but, in fact, it was all because JvG has picked a 6:2 split for nearly every game... If he'd have held off that extra back-row forward we'd be playing champagne rugby now

It's a big ask, but I am interested to see if Barbeary can convert the pressure we create (usually without results) into points. He is a try machine, with a unique ability to get over from 3-5 yards, so perhaps he's the individual who lifts us out of this mess with 1/2/3 pick-and-go tries a game?
We're not short of carriers now – but we'll need to score +4 tries to stand any chance at Welford Road. I've no problem with all +4 of them being from c3m out. But I do have a problem if we keep trying to score tries from that range with zero success. Einstein's definition of insanity neatly describes our pick-and-go strategy for the most part thus far this season. Maybe Barbeary turns our insanely repetitive efforts into 5-pointers? If he does, and we win, I'll happily carry on being the most boring side in the league. I admit, it's a big IF...
I very much hope we're not 4 from 20 after this...

Van Velze could be rugby’s answer to General Patton and I’m not sure it’s worth him starting while Ewan Richards plays for Taunton Titans
Why would you invest game time in your best young player from last season when he could be playing some third tier stuff....
Start the 35 year old.
I get the logic if it was a do or die game where you felt his knowledge and leadership may be the difference. Sadly all we are playing for is second from bottom when there is no relegation anyway.
All a bit desperate and embarassing imho but if he helps us win (and it may do) and it starts our inevitable march to glory in 2043 then happy days.
Quote:redmix
for me that's the best balance in the back row in a starting lineup for a long time. Agree Reid hasn't done anything wrong, but continually picking a back row of players who are 6.5s hasn't worked.
Agree, reid and bayliss have been fantastic but that looks a backrow with nice balance and skills mix if they fire
Sub hill in at 6 and similar scenario.

You will be eating our words when we get 3 backrow injuries and no injuries in the backs.
Imagine cloete and reid can look up in the air at the ball and chase with the best if them so could perform the role of a bath outside back.
All joking aside that's a good team, it's a 23 that should have every chance of a win. I almost preferred it when we had loads of injuries and a ready made excuse.
Live in hope of being pleasantly surprised....
We looked ok for 7 minutes. But we’re so poor. We’re going to have to do a ‘Sale away’ to make this even anything half respectable.
…nice try from Spencer.

It’s not like we’re being cut apart by brilliant rugby, either. Opposition just know they’re going to walk all over us by doing the basics, and so much of our downfall is of our own making. Line out errors. Complete lack of discipline. Short of fitness. No confidence.

Once again, with a few exceptions it’s not the players - it’s the coaching. It’s no better under JvG. The only thing that did improve was the defence under JPF & that is not going well today. It seems ridiculous but JvG as to go through the revolving door.

Aren’t the injuries just to do with the fact that we get physically dominated every single game? Hence, probability is we’re on the back foot and higher chance we get knocks on the head and bangs on the knee etc are higher?
Must have something to do with it
Not harsh on Bailey at all imho. A 10 should stop a hooker from 10 yards out. And Bailey is old enough and has played enough rugby to have no excuses. Without focusing too much on him, as they’ve all been terrible, that missed tackle aside, Bailey has done nothing, and your 10 has to do something. Fact Spencer is now playing 10 speaks volumes.

You will be eating our words when we get 3 backrow injuries and no injuries in the backs.
Fair call Charlie - I now realise that JVG is a genius.

We are just so poor!
Watching it was more blindingly obvious than ever to me that we’re trying to play an ultra conservative game plan without a functioning line out or a top class 10 who runs the game. Off the back of that, we get on the back foot and then our lack of fitness and discipline kills us. Confidence drops. Game over.
dr.bath1865
Redpath hauled down Brown.
Incorrect, Bailey brought down Brown, Redpath missed the first tackle off the high ball
It seems that our entire game plan is forward trundle, kick, forward trundle and hope we get lucky. We are back to hoping we can stay in a game and then a miracle might tip the balance our way.
We have no attacking structure and no intent to use our backs. If you are a back then van Grann does not value you, you are just an irrelevance.
The constant 6-2 bench is just a concession that we are not interested in attack unless something miraculously comes from a kick chase or a one-off runner winning a collision and getting someone free. This sort of rugby died out a decade ago.
Why aren't we using the rest of the season trying to speed up delivery so that when Russell turns up we have something to work on.
This dreadful style of rugby isn't working so change it.

At least when Borthwick spent half a season rinsing Tigers he learned something. What have we learned about the squad? Why did we bother signing Etete? Why, omg why, did we persist with two absolute failures of coaches?
Wether we like it or not we have a Premiership quality squad with a Championship quality coaching setup.
Not sure when relegation returns, but we can guarantee Bath will be going down unless the club invests in a decent coaching setup.
Lineout still a shambles, Dunn well off in his current performance levels. Thought the back row went ok, in spite of all the changes. Shame our most effective and clearly fittest lock (FLW) is probably off at the end of the season.
Wasn't aware JJ was playing till 60 mins in, a good servant but stealing a wage at the mo.
I may be alone but I don't think JvG is a bad coach, Chatteris, Yes! I think we need to change a few old playing faces who have been around a bit too long and constantly underperform.
Hope Barbeary is ok, wrap him in cotton wool and get him ready for next season. And as others have said lets get some of our hungry youngsters involved, Richards, Staddon et al.
It's very worrying. I personally am prepared to give jvg til this time next season to fully judge him.
He should have his own coaches if he wants anything to change , playing squad will largely by his choices, will have had 2 pre seasons and over 1.5 seasons in charge. Genuinely in no excuse territory then , esp with Bruce paying up to cap and coughing up silly money for finn.
I am not even asking the world by this time next year, just a team I am not embarrassed by more weeks than not would do.

Thankfully sounds different to his hammy issues?
Fingers crossed its a minor knee tweak rather than anything serious.

What we doing playing the 35 year old Van Velze. I've liked a lot of JVG's signings but all of our lock options are not good enough.
Attwood - Mr. Plod. Good if you're going just run at him.
McNally - totally out of form since his injury
Roux - Injured
Spencer - Not up to the level and Injured
Richards - playing for Taunton
Etete - God knows, hasn't played a minute.
Lee-Warner - the only decent player and he's off to Japan/France
Ellis - we loaned him out to Sarries
Williams - we gave him away to Ex
Number one priority now in terms of recruitment- only ones I would be bothered about retaining above are richards (please play the bloke) and flw who is off by all accounts.
Jury out on ewels to an extent.
We need at least 2 or 3 new options in imho
That said - we got no luck today: 3 back row injuries in the space of - what? -10 or 12 minutes is pretty unlucky by any standards. That Bath still managed some attack after that is creditable. The observation by the commentator that "Bath got little of the rub of the green" (I think he was paraphrasing what one of the players was saying to the ref) had some merit. The 3 Leicester tries and 2 Bath yellow cards came in a period of pressure from an error by the ref penalising McConnochie when he had been tackled by a player on the ground. Then, in the 62nd minute, with Bath pressing, Tigers midfield was offside at 3 rucks in a row- within 10M of their line - no penalty to Bath, the pressure eventually bringing a penalty for Leicester. That is not consistent officiating.
I suspect that with another ref (or ref team) the result might have been closer.

It’s 2-3 times a game, no team anywhere can win 14-21 points down with 13 men! Then in desperation any one with fire gets injured to make up the deficit.
In my view Chatteris and Hatley are jointly responsible, it’s no coincidence that we keep the same coaches and have the same problems. Nothing has changed!

'hard to beat'...
I've seen enough to form an opinion.
Bath enjoy loyal support, pretty much unconditional, with almost all home games being a sellout. I am not sure that the recent offerings deserve that level of loyalty.

Why is Hooper anywhere near the team? Crazy management in any environment, let alone competitive professional sport.
As the lineouts have been farcically unsuccessful (amongst other things) for several seasons = why again?
I have a horrible sinking feeling that history is repeating itself on a repetitive roundabout?
Once again the coaching appointments have proven to be disastrous. Blackadder, Hooper and now JvG. The common denominator for all of these is Tarquin, he simply has to go. Get someone in with fresh eyes to appoint the right DOR and HC. Failure to do this and we’ll be in the championship at the first opportunity.
No point attending the upcoming members event to hear Tarquin drone on for hours about how great things are going to be.

Adopted Players: All of the little blighters!!!
Quins have just thrashed the mighty Exeter who made more unforced errors in one match than I have seen them make in a season in the past.......
I think Spencer was faster today and even made some runs on his own.
JJ is not playing and is not worth having in the squad.
See the delightful and simple chip kick from Marcus Smith that led to a try simple but very, very effective
I can see there being some sort of a clear-out at the end of the season. To me, our problems stem with four key elements - poor discipline, poor quality at 10, a substandard pack with no depth and doesn't win the collisions (hence the injuries!), and a badly misfunctioning set piece (mostly the lineout). If you fix all of these issues, the attack will improve considerably I'm sure. JVG will probably want to complete his reset and start off next season with a clean state.
As hard as it is to say, we must keep the faith!

We need to be realistic that whatever a coach says after a defeat they are words that are unlikely to be what they are thinking. They are not going to throw individual players or assistant coaches under the bus. There should be harsh words in the week at Farleigh and that should go both ways in a healthy environment if the players feel that the tactics were wrong, but that is for the closed environment only.
They don't deserve a coach like JvG... Why treat them as professionals? They need a bo**ocking.
... IMHO, of course.

There's a "cargo cult" quality to what we're doing. We *look* like we're playing rugby but, when you analyse it, it's all surface - the underlying structures that make it all hang together just don't seem to be there.
Poor teams are unlucky and have injuries and our injury record would be laughable, if it weren't so sad for the players involved. I hope Alfie is OK.

All bottom of the league (til yest)- grim season tho at least saints somehow won yest.
I am all for laying 90% of the blame at the last coaching regime and this coaching regime but jeeze these players don't show much mental fortitude do they!? Where is their pride to sort this out properly. Are the coaches really so bad that a 23 like we have named in the last 3 matches are on a hiding to nothing!? Not sure I buy that completely. I think there has to be an element of joint ownership.
What's the solution- I have no idea. Realistically I think hats and charteris are in big trouble and probably need to go. Elements of the game they look after are at best inconsistent, at worst consistently awful.
Recruitment will be important to get more players jvg wants here but when you are bottom with a star littered squad it's clearly not the silver bullet.
No idea if jvg remit is too big- evidence so far suggests it is.

Only one with a decent score looks set to leave in the summer.
Theme of lots of ill discipline as always- 2 yellows pretty good for us.
Bailey in 'looks short on confidence' shocker when his reward for his truly gutsy efforts last season is having to play second fiddle to a bang average francis , has all meaningful responsibility stripped from him, and they bring in a coach who shafts his goalkicking.
Quote:dr.bath1865
Pathetic defence both on kick chase then Bailey’s tackle on their hooker. To reiterate, pathetic.
I was roundly put down by someone on Twitter the other day when I bemoaned the fact we give the opposition at least one soft try a game. I seriously wonder what I am watching if that’s not the case. Gifted tries are our party piece and I fully understand why JP Ferreira is bald.
To my mind we simply have to sort this out, too many times have we concede a score early on from that scenario but worse still is we have dropped to 14 the 13 on the pitch. There is no way back from that, confidence and morale are obliterated and defeat inevitable.
What is galling is that in between all this there are example of top class rugby by some of our best players, Lawrence, Hill, Underhill, TdG and Gallagher for example, even Ben Spencer showed us he hasn't lost it.
What I also find interesting in the comparison with Quins is Tabai Matson, when he was paired with Todd Blackadder things were improving and we can see what he has achieved in the long term.
I'm still of the belief that we need a DoR AND a head coach given one person win both roles has failed 3 times now. In addition there are some common denominators that need to change to effect a revival as previously mentioned.
One thing remains a mystery though, why do we get so many back row injuries and No 8? Coetzee, Faletau, Barberry, Underhill, Hill, Cloete, final thing is Chippy still with us?

The game was over by the time McNally returned from the bin unfortunately. I'll admit to being in the stadium and completely missing him being sent off. Dunn's however was pretty clear though - how many times has this guy done this now. Do they not realise that giving up 5/7 points but staying up at 15 might be a better outcome than losing a man and inevitably giving up the 5/7 points.
We had a good period in the second half, but this is a team and supporter base who have been devoid of belief for 2 years now. The comeback against an old foe in their house was never on.
How the hell does anyone change this
I stopped watching at that point because if the referee isn’t consistent then the game is pointless also it is very bad for my blood pressure.
Like many other supporters I can see quite a few changes this summer……
Although we had a few missing the spine of our team Pollard, Wiese, Montoya and Martin were all playing which helped us. Good luck for the rest of the season and hope you injured players aren’t too serious.
Quote:WimborneBath
This thread makes for a dispiriting read. The woes of the performances, results and lack of anything to cling for a hope of revival is beyond sad. It is painful to imagine Bath in a lower division but nothing this season has suggested that this or next season will see a turnaround. If we have a clear out of players this summer without tackling the management and coaching, other players are unlikely to join Mr Russell.
I don’t think enticing decent players in the current climate is a major problem as it has become a buyers’ market. Players will be mostly concerned about their livelihood & are always optimistic that things will improve.
We had bad luck, Leicester had the rub of the green. What cost us was the utter brain dead stupidity of getting carded under our posts to go down to 14 and then the pressure it put on the rest of the team caused further infringements taking us down to 13. This is not the fault of the coaches, it is absolutely the fault of the players concerned. It's been said above, but it is the same players making the same stupid mistakes. The coaches pick them, largely because there is no one else available, but the coaches do not tell them to be idiots on the pitch. Our problem is not the coaches, it is (some of) the players and for a variety of reasons. If it really is a buyers market at the moment, JvG needs to make it clear that they all are playing for next year's contract. Keep being an idiot on the pitch and you need get your agent looking for a new gig for you. I don't care if they go off and become better players elsewhere, they need to perform for the BB&W to warrant wearing the shirt.
How is it possible to surpass your nadir?
If I was captain of this team, I’d say, stuff the coaches. Let’s own this. I’ll see you at Lambridge tomorrow morning at 7. Let’s see who wants it.

No decent coach, would have any problem with this...
The players need to take some ownership. Coaches can prepare you for the 80, but they cannot tell you how to react on the field. And, being harsh, a lot of these brain-dead on-field decisions are cultural rather than coached. No way is JvG's team teaching or instructing them to give away dumb penalties and yellow cards 5 metres from the line...

It is a buyers market and I agree that players need to perform in bb&w. If they do that they should keep their place (doesn't happen enough), if they aren't rectifying issues and mistakes then maybe we have to be harsher.
I can see a few coaches going and a big chunk of the playing squad going- then we can see how much the rot has set in or if jvg can turn it around

This year we’re in line to finish with 4/20 (and if anyone can find an argument for winning any of our remaining games, then please pass me your cup) …ie worse.
We play saints this week who got absolutely battered by a Bristol side who didn’t look special against us bar Semi. Couldn’t have a better time to play them, worst defence in the league and missing big players.
Realistically I’d say that’s our only chance of a win unless Sarries put out a young side last game of the season.
Quote:charlieboa
I can see a few coaches going and a big chunk of the playing squad going
In other words, this season is nothing to do with 'becoming harder to beat', it's just another season in the waiting room, while next season will be another transition season of bedding in a new coaching set up and squad.
I should think Tom Ellis will have to be removed from Sarries and put on a train to Bath by security.
I am not going to sugar coat the result - I would say though a lot of what JVG said post match was right - Tigers did their damage when Dunn AGAIN stupidly got sin binned and then McNally - you cannot play at this level with 13 players and when you are playing a side like Tigers you cannot afford to have your Hooker and main Lineout jumper off the field.
Once Tigers had that buffer of points there was only ever going to be one result - we did battle but the hill was so steep to climb that we left ourselves open to be picked off and Tigers did that effectively.
Karl Dickson - I am not going to harp on about him again - but god he let Tigers get away with a lot - there was a period where Tigers were consistently offside - he gave penalty after penalty but no card - Bath infringed and out came the card - and that was the opinion of the Tigers supporter sat behind me!!
What is hugely worrying for me is the amount of serious injuries to key players we are picking up - I am not sure when our luck is going to change - but I think it is incredulous to suggest our Medics, Strength and Conditioning staff are sub standard - it is just unbelievable bad luck.
Finally I would say we are improving - I know it is hard to see and many will be laughing at this post but we do look dangerous and our defence is so much better - hard to say that having just conceded 48 points I know but you have to understand at least 24 of those points were when we were down to 14 or even 13 - if you look at the game when we were both at full strength - it was actually 27-24 to Bath!!! obviously Tigers would have scored some points but I am certain they would not have run in 24 if we had 15 on the pitch - it would have been a much closer game.

I would have a different slant on it- it is then jvg's set up and playing squad so any excuses evaporate.
He will have had 2 pre seasons and over a year in charge. We have to improve dramatically next season and that would only require lower mid table mediocrity and winning nearly as many games as we lose.
I don't think many expect miracles now sadly but soke kind of trending in the right direction to give us hope is the absolute minimum
Presumably Russell will have a few days here and there in Bath across the summer?

Spencer was a different player than his performance against Bears, fast ball was refreshing to see.
FLW was very good, as good as I have seen him play in the BBW, and Alfie’s short cameo demonstrated exactly what has been missing since Hughes departed. If fit, I predict that he can make as big a difference as FR.
