22 senior forwards, 16 senior backs, and 5-6 viable Academy players. Thin at 9, loosehead, lock. Overstacked at backrow. Much as I'd like to see Arundell and Pearson here, I can't really believe that those positions are the priority.

Interesting that there's so much depth at lock from the academy. Given FLW off after the RWC it feels like there must be a signing coming there.

As before, Pearson doesn't feel a priority. I absolutely think Arundell would work for us though, we lack pure gas and of our three wingers one of them is almost always injured at some point - plus it feels like good succession planning for RMac.

Agree with all of that, hasta. Arundell, pacy, brings something different to the rest of the back three, supporter, makes a lot of sense. Given the whole back row have re-committed over the past season, that looks a really secure unit and lots of quality in there. Can we justify splashing out on Pearson? Surely if we're going to spend whatever's left of the cap on a forward, the priority is for another lock.

I think we're also a tad light at loose head, especially if Beno is going to be away with England. I know du Toit can play both sides but, if you sign one of the world's top tight heads, do you really want to be scenario planning to play him somewhere else?

If the last few seasons have taught us anything, its that scrimping on the front row is a recipe for disaster.

... IMHO, of course.

Fair point. Beno's not had the bets of luck with injuries either. Cordwell could have some work to do this season.

Agree it could be an issue. However one of the reasons TDT has such a high value is his ability to play both sides. And if Beno isn’t available then TDT is our second best looshead.

I know I would much rather go into a game with
1. TDT 3. Stuart
17. Schoeman 18. Jonker

Then
1. Schoeman 3. Stuart
17. Cordwell 18. TDT

I also don’t see any Looseheads available for a good price outside of Gigena

Seems all over at Irish...

I think we are light at loosehead (gigena/goodridge-clarke?)

Lock- retain gj vv or get munster chap or munga?

Scrum half'- think white is unlikely so relying on tcs/ lock to step up.

Wing- i do think arundell makes sense at right price

Otherwise squad looks v strong on paper and other than still being a bit overloaded at backrow pretty well balanced

Piece in the DT about how squads will look next season. Charlie Morgans suggestion of Bath 23:

15. Matt Gallagher
14. Joe Cokanasiga
13. Ollie Lawrence
12. Cameron Redpath
11. Will Muir
10. Finn Russell+
9. Ben Spencer

1. Beno Obano
2. Tom Dunn
3. Thomas du Toit+
4. Charlie Ewels
5. Quinn Roux
6. Ted Hill
7. Sam Underhill
8. Josh Bayliss

Replacements
16. Niall Annett, 17. Juan Schoeman, 18. Will Stuart, 19. Fergus Lee-Warner, 20. Miles Reid, 21. Louis Schreuder, 22. Orlando Bailey, 23. Max Ojomoh

It's been edited now but Charlie Morgan had Juan Schoeman as a replacement prop for Bristol earlier. Had to check I hadn't missed something.

Exeter stands out as looking a bit like a shadow of what they were until very recently. Could have a tricky season ahead.

Agree JK7. I think Slade and Hawkins will be vital for them this season. Slade because he's one of the last few from the double winners and is now a senior player and leader? and Hawkins because both his size and skills will mean an added dimension at 12 for Chiefs and an extra edge to their sometimes blunt attack.

I honestly think you've one of the stand-out squads. As Morgan says probably the team that has done the best out of the unfortunate situation. I'm fascinated to see how Russell goes and also if you get a return from Barbeary.

As ever injuries are the concern. Let’s hope that under the new regime they will be minimised but we know they will have an effect. We could be vulnerable at PLH & centre. I guess the days of ever larger squads are a thing of the past & we just have to cope.

Ok thanks, then to respond two points we have 6 fewer matches so more rest time for the front row which seems to be an area of attrition.
On the centre front to be honest I'd have no worries about putting Sam Harris at 13 or wing for that matter, he is super fast and a very crafty defender. On top of that the Offy actually lists him as a fly half, full back or centre. Perhaps someone else sees it like that as well?

Having said that I've never seen him play there.

"both sides" in this case, seeming to mean 12xTHP, 1xLHP (that once, being against us in January 2023)

Does that mean much when he is so young WT? Not that I know anything about front rows but is it perhaps also a statement about versatility given TDT flexibility?

I've still not the slightest idea why some props are tight heads and some loose heads. Is it something to do with their ears? Perhaps they are asymmetric though it's clearly not visible. Any props on this board?

I (think that) I know the following about props:
1. Lefty-Loosie, Righty-Tighty
2. They get excited when I talk about feeding the ball into scrum, and I'm never 100% sure that they know it's just a phrase, and that they're not supposed to actually eat the damned thing.

Just about where they practice (these days) due to the difference in technique at the scrum isn't it? Both would be expected to do the work around the field in the modern game. I wonder if its easier for a tighthead to cover loosehead than the other way around (i.e. the pure physical challenge of using both shoulders) although obviously someone like Beno isn't lacking in power anyway. Someone the size of Thomas du Toit can do whatever he likes I guess!

Am I right in saying that if a THP gets crocked in a game they have to be replaced like for like. Ie a LHP can’t play at TH unless he is familiar.
If so there must be a massive difference in technique between the sides!

I’d have thought any front row could cope.

Very good signing

Know much about him bathonian80?

Seems a low risk punt and probably a v decent player if involved in every round of u20s 6 nations last year.

Playing both sides a rare skill these days but as WT says sounds like he has largely played THP and as matt says largely where you practice that dictates where you end up.

Tdt seems an example of someone who can genuinely switch around- THP for sharks normally but LHP bench cover for boks at mo.

I remember flat's not enjoying trying to play THP and getting injured attempting it...

Not sure I've seen that with props, Shipwrecked. Certainly seen it a few times where a prop is set to replace a hooker and the ref needs a bit of convincing that he isn't going to hurt himself. Nathan Catt once, I recall.

On the Prop side discussion.

Most will have picked a side at a younger age and stuck with it. It may have just felt more comfortable or genuinely just got picked there. Just like why some locks only ever play 4 or 5 not both.

Each side has different roles in a scrum. Whether that be attacking or stabilising, preventing the wheel or going at the hooker. Certain skills complement each other hence why you see the longer a scrum plays together the more stable they become.

Ok thanks so it seems there are no physical attributes that dictate tight or loose head. More habit.
So why are good tight heads more rare than loose heads?

Can you be too big for the front row? Most seem to be shorter in stature but is that just traditional?

You can be too tall sw - a strong squat player can bend an opponent with a long back.

That said, Andrew Sheridan, at 6’4 1/2 was an incredibly effective prop who could play both sides.

Usually the tighthead is the heavier & sometimes taller of the pair. He is expected to be strong enough to bear the greater amount of force going through his upper body in the srum.

The loosehead may be shorter, has to be able to scrummage straight without using his outer arm to pull down on his opponent or twist his opponent inwards.

A few weeks into pre season and things seem rather quiet with a couple of loose ends not clarified.
Has JJ left? By all reports he has but not confirmed?. GJ Van Velze looks by his social media to have left and again nothing from the club (although he has been removed from the website squad). In recent times the club imo have communicated well. I hope this will continue.

adopted player, 24/25 Hame Faiva. 23/24 Ted Hill. 22/23 Cam Redpath. 21/22 Max Clark. 20/21 Henry Thomas. 19/20 Max Wright. 18/19 Cooper Vuna.

I loved JJ in his heyday, just a wonderful player. Best of luck and get paid!

Just wanted to add my +1 to this too. I do wonder if JJ going could leave us light at OC when Lawrence is on international duty or if he's injured.

I just don't see how have 3 specialists in one backs position can ever be considered "too light"
I know it's been proposed repeatedly that "only" having 7 centres meant we were already light there, before JJ was off, but... it just doesn't make sense to me.
Especially in comparison to... every other position on the pitch (eg, we've got 6 centres and 5 back-3 players; but need more back-3 players every week).
We've more centres than we have flankers; and I know for sure which position I consider to have the higher attrition rates.

As an aside - weren't we supposed to be finalising the squad a couple of weeks ago? Might this news allow us to actually do so (and "know" we've still got some space under the cap to pick 1-2 others up post-RWC)

The 3 specialists I assume WT are lawrence, butt and wright.

For me it's less than the number of options and more the quality of them but that is probably the reality of where the cap is.

I hope hennessey leapfrogs the others into being Lawrence's back up by the end of next season tbh.

Exactly - it's not so much that we're light on numbers there but light on quality understudies for Lawrence.

Quality concerns are fair, but yeah, that's baked in from pre-existing contracts, and a reality of a salary-capped environment.
If you want your back-up to be the same quality as the starter, then you either need to be talking a position with a lot of rotation, or you have to grow your back-up yourself (and hope they don't look to move on if they remain the back-up for too long)

It really doesn't meant that we "should" spend JJ's salary on a 7th centre, ahead of a 4th lock or 6th flanker (for me).

We have 15 backrowers listed on the offy plus 2 more into the academy (timmins/bennett), plus the likes of richards/flw/dingley who are more backrowers than locks in my mind. The 8s like coetzee have played almost as much on the flank (bayliss prob more on flank than 8?).

Feels plenty to me even with flw going in Nov. Would love to see more of richards/staddon/dingley etc this season.

Loosehead prop would be my priority to be honest (gigena still not picked up?) if we have any cap, then lock, then wing possibly.

At hooker and 9 we feel a bit light but if they trust stewart/spandler and TCS/lock then good luck to them.

Feels like there is huge reliance on tdt being fit and available to cover both sides at prop which makes me nervous given the injury records of beno and stuart in recent times.

If you count the academy kids as all being valid options, then yeah, we've got plenty (also if you're looking at 3 positions rather than 2, which I was doing to draw a better equivalence).

Equally, centres jump from 6 to 9; and if you include non-specialists who can cover, then it's even more centres available.

Including academy kids, also brings the number of hookers up to 5, which is plenty - but realistically, it's 2 seniors and some academy kids (2 of whom are ready, I'll grant).
I will absolutely agree that we're short of hookers and scrum halves (and locks)

Fair point WT in the context of the cap. I agree, a lock would probably be better use of the money - someone with a bit of snarl about them, in the Attwood/Grewcock tradition, perhaps.

Comfortable at prop WT?

Seems such a crucial position to me.

Lose tdt to call up/injury and leaves us with beno/schoeman and stuart/ jonker.

Still good but lose one more and the likes of cordwell and griffin come into play.

Half of me is excited by that and half of me thinks we need one more senior option if there is cap.

Very attritional position and key position to risk being slightly light....

No, only madmen play prop

I'd like another, but for me it's not as high a priority at Hk, LK and SH - where we're into the academy / non-specialist with 1 single absence.

Again though, my point here is that I don't think we need to replace JJ with another centre - because we've got plenty.

If we take the theoretical that the internationals are away, and there 1 extra injury...
At centre, it means that we're playing 2 of Mojo, Francis, Butt.
At Prop it means we're playing 2 of Obano, Shoeman, Jonker.

At hooker it means we're into the academy
At scrum half it means we're into the academy
At Lock it means we're either playing a backrower or into the academy

When it comes to balancing a wider squad, I want a minimum of a match-day 23 + a spare bench full + extra cover for the internationals - for me, that's the minimum. We don't have that at 2, 4/5 and 9

Makes sense WT.

I can only assume they have huge trust in Stewart and TCS/lock, or that due to contract situations and cap we they just have to trust them.

Totally agree centre isn't a priority , I can think of 5 positions I would prioritise over centre personally

Sam Harris was FH, FB centre is now centre FH FB
Ewan Richards was SR BR is now SR
Will Butt was centre, wing now centre
Max Ojomoh and Cam Redpath dropped the FH tag and centre only.
Orlando Bailey dropped his FB tag.

Let’s be honest, Mojo and Redpath were only FHs because we were short handed. The above list provides some clarity and I guess implies the squad is better depth balanced so we aren’t making do.

Think that's right pgt.

Flw in the article is listed as lock but backrow/lock on profile.

Squad looks good. 4 senior locks Inc flw who is leaving in Nov still feels light to me but would be good if richards is making the 23 often and cuckson gets the odd game.

Definitely areas were we are having to trust academy/academy grads but I don't have an issue with that. Do worry a bit about depth at prop- 3 class operators and not much beyond (and 2 have pretty bad injury records over recent times).

Tbf schoeman and cordwell have improved alot, I think griffin has a lot of potential and hoping the new coaches work their magic with jonker who on paper should be a solid back up

Perhaps I’m reading too much into this but there does seem to be more specificity of positions for players.
I just though that having had a season to see players in action JVG had decided on roles.
I saw Richards as a BR rather than lock but perhaps he has more bulk now.

Jvg may feel he needs him as a lock for the squad balance and richards may buy into it when looking at the relative competition for places at lock vs backrow?

I remember the club not specifying length of contract when they announced his signing, so wondered if this was new news?

If we haven't already allocated JJ's space in the cap, might we find room for a 4th LHP?
Wouldn't even be coming to be 4th choice.

Josh Basham's the other name that stands out as unattached, but I think we're okay there.

That's a shame, think we are light at lhp personally (totally appreciate cap means depth has to suffer in some areas of the squad).

Agree we are OK at hooker as long as Stewart has learnt to hit a barn door with his throwing. Combine the best bits of Stewart and spandler and you have a potential star. Sarries need is great.... only the 2 hookers in the eng squad- given tuilpolutu age I guess he will come into the mix when George retires maybe

We are still looking at an enormous drop-off (not so much in quality, as in experience/confidence) from first-choice to second-choice half-backs ....

It just feels as though OB and Carr-Smith not getting game-time is a self-fulfilling and self-perpetuating situation that will bite us at some point.

Ojomoh's name spelled wrong WT!

Pack looks very strong. Backs look less so, particularly during international windows where we'll be missing Finn, Cam, Ollie and possibly Spenny. One more injury and we'd be in trouble.

That being said, I'm super excited to see more Sam Harris next season.

Loosehead is the only area where I feel we're a little vulnerable.

Replacing Schoeman with Van Wyk feels like a bit of a downgrade, and I think cements TdT as our 2nd choice LHP (even though he's far more effective at tighthead), would love Cordwell to kick on and move up the pecking order.

Griffin held his own last season, so I'm comfortable with him being relied on more and rotated with Stuart and TdT for the 3/18 shirt.
