Bath vs Bristol - We're Going on a Bear Hunt...
By Devonport Boy
November 15 2023
(Apologies to Michael Rosen, but I just couldn’t resist it!) OK, full disclosure, as a rule I’m not really a fan of Friday night games. Every year when the fixture list comes out, I grumble about the number that we have to play, especially when our rivals 90 miles or so down the M5 get away with none yet again! That said, I know the players like Friday evenings under the lights and I understand that they’re good for the financial bottom line, so, having got the grumpy old man bit out of the way, I have to admit I’m looking forward to this one.
In terms of last weekend, Bath and Bristol come into this game on the back of different results. We saw the “comeback at Kingsholm”, turning a 20-10 deficit at half time into a 27- 45 win. Strange things are happening with this Bath team. It would be easy to put it all down to the “Finn factor” and whilst he’s having a huge influence, there’s more to it than that. Over the years all too often we’ve seen Bath teams giving away a score at the stroke of half time and looking really vulnerable in the opening part of the second half with the opposition making the critical scores to take the game away from us. That absolutely didn’t happen at Kingsholm. This team has developed an ability to solve problems on the field that we haven’t seen in a while and a lot of that must surely be down to the impact of the very talented coaching team that JvG has assembled.
The post match social media has been largely about Finn “shushing” the Shed. He’s got huge on-field presence (Butch James comes to mind) but there’s much more to him than that. The way that he was able at Kingsholm to allow Max Ojomoh and Ollie Lawrence to play up to their hard-charging potential is great to watch and I for one am really enjoying seeing the boys playing with big grins on their faces. There were great performances across the pitch, but I have to say a word about Charlie Ewels. He’s clearly enjoying himself these days. The way he managed the lineout and set the tone for the forwards in other set plays was good to see. He’s still a young man with potentially his best years ahead of him. He has a deep understanding of the game and is a “thinker”. I seem to remember we had another one of those a few years ago by the name of Borthwick…
So, what can we expect from Bristol this weekend? For a start, they’ll be hurting. After a bright opening to last week’s game they succumbed to the power of Sale and the control of George Ford and they’ll be looking to fix that. They’ve certainly got the ability to pose questions. Last week Rich Lane (late of this Parish) and Gabriel Ibitoye looked very dangerous when they were allowed to get the ball in space, particularly out wide and we’ll need to nullify that threat. Harry Randall is always a handful and Harry Thacker is a class act whichever number he’s wearing on his shirt, so once again our defence will need to be on top line, especially if some of the Bristol players missing for the Sale game are available for this weekend.
If they run true to form, a lot of the Bristol supporters will be predicting an arm wrestle in the mud on Friday. To be fair, the pitch hasn’t been great so far but a lot of work has been done since the last home game to make it more robust. Hopefully we won’t see the medical team helping out the Rec ground staff with some industrial grade “gardening” during this game! If it does come down to a forwards battle then Messrs Dunn, Obano, du Toit et al will be relishing it. However, we’re developing a very impressive whole team game this season and the Gloucester match showed what our backs can do when unleashed with good field position and quality attacking ball. We’d like to see more of that on Friday! Bristol are a good team and the “local derby” thing can produce unpredictable results, but there’s a confidence about this Bath team which is infectious and if we get it right on the night we should win.
I’ve had a go at team selection, but rotation and injuries picked up at Kingsholm might mean that I’m way off base, nevertheless I think it’ll be something like:
Gallagher, Cokonasiga, Lawrence, Redpath, Muir, Russell, Spencer, Obano, Dunn, du Toit, Lee-Warner, Ewels, Reid, Underhill, Barbeary.
Replacements: Annett, Schoeman, Stuart, McNally, Coetzee, Bailey, Ojomoh, Schreuder.

Otherwise selection seems about right.

Hope he plays, as he had a great game last week, was involved in everything, and will be needed on a heavy Rec pitch. Tempting to go with him at 6, as think we could outmuscle Bristol up front if we're really on it. Barbeary "should be ok" according to JvG but might be an opportune time to give him a rest and go with Coetzee/Reid at 8.

Feels right to give Coetzee a start and Barbeary from the bench.
I disagree, the step down from Barbeary to Coetzee is far too big and we really need to be winning our home games.
Woof, this league is relentless!!
Great comments on Ewels. Had a great game last week but needs to back it up. Would be great to see him and Roux form a partnership.
Need to go with strongest team possible from the start IMO. Squad is now strong enough for the bench to still be the difference.
Fitz Harding will be a huge loss for Bears - but I expect a couple of players returning for them. I hope and pray the Rec holds up I know the club has done a lot of work on the pitch since the Tigers game but for once we want a pitch that offers firmness for scrummaging and a dry/dryish ball. What would be nice is to take the opposition and Official out of the equation by producing a first class performance.
I respectively disagree in relation to the drop off from Barbery to Coetzee - both players suffered a horrific string of injuries and I am hoping we are starting to see the strengths of both players - Coetzee really impressed me when he came off the bench last Friday and actually made more of an impression than Alfie on the night - to have both fit and firing just makes us a more dangerous proposition.
For me I would go - Gallagher, Joe C, Lawrence, Redpath, Muir, Russell, Spencer, Obano, Dunn, Du Toit, Ewels, FLW, Underhill, Reid, Coetzee - Finishers Annett, Schuman , Stuart, McNally, Barbery, Schreuder, Bailey, Tom D G.

It's a Derby - form goes out the window to a certain extent - I fully expect Bristol to fire into us and I am sure there will be loads of niggle with Mr Genge due back and he will be fully at the front and in the officials ear.
Agree, Bristol have shown glimpses of excellence and those backs are hugely under functioning, as Ali states it starts up front. Sheedy will want to showcase himself for the Wales fly half position, ironically I'm hoping an ex Bear beats him to it, (Ioan Lloyd, Scarlets). Bristol messed up with him I think. Its no easy game!

Still cannot believe that the TMO failed to pick it up and the unwillingness of the officials to act when the issue was brought to their attention both by Finn, Ben Spencer and indeed the medical team.
Given it’s fractured, wouldn't that rule Lawrence out for a while? No knowledge about noses, and the fact he could play on seemingly with no problem, bagging a brace, means it can’t be too uncomfortable.

Just read that Johnny May has been given 6 week ban reduced to 3 weeks for the citing - Information from Bath stated that Ollie Lawrence sustained a fractured/Broken nose - so unfortunately given the swelling & discomfort that comes later from such an injury in latter days he may not be available for the match on Friday - so it may be Will Butt if fit or a Redpatch/Max O partnership.
If he blow broke his nose even if he passed a HIA a bang like that should mean a rest I'd have thought, particularly if he is up against Vakatawa. Regarding noses broke mine twice didn't swell or stopped me playing, I think it depends on the player.

Quote:dr.bath1865
Yeh, very odd it wasn’t looked at given the current environment. Horrible challenge. Glad he gets a ban as he was totally out of control, if not intentional
Ouch! just seen this and as said above kind of incredible it didn't get picked up in game, maybe because the focus was on Spencer?

As mentioned previously they didn't go back for the knock on at the scrum either. Surely we hadn't contaminated the TMO as well all in 3 minutes!

Shipwrecked as you state - I too have broken my nose more times than I can remember- indeed so many times by the time I hung my boots up the bone was non existent and indeed the only result was some minor bruising around the base of my eyes.
It is really an individual thing and how you body reacts in particular and of course how many times you have broken it. Nowadays in this professional era I would expect him to be fit whether JvG selects him is another question as he appears hot in player welfare.

Well, we had turned up for the match. That might have been enough in Carley's eyes.
Gallagher, coko, lawrence , redpath, muir, finn, spencer, schoeman, annett, stuart, flw, ewels, richards, underhill, coetzee
Bench: beno, dunn, du toit, mcnally, reid, TCS, bailey, harris
If roux is fit I would prob play him and move flw to 6.
Personally wouldn't take any chances with alfie and give him a week off.
Boring fact- pitch will now be 4-5% artificial fibres so not all grass but enough to not be classed as a desso

Furthermore, aren’t Bristol something of a bogey team for us. I can’t recall us beating them many times in recent years?
I know they did the double over us last season and we've had one or two drubbings away from home in recent years.
Just read that Luatua and Vui both out as well (plus Malins a doubt), which can only be good news for Bath. Vui in particular always seems to play very well against us.
Reading JvG's preview and in particular the impact Thomas Du Toit has made he points to the most valuable asset of his ability to play both sides of the scrum.
I wonder if this match that Stevie Scott decides is the one to start with a front row combination of Du Toit, Dunn, Stuart keep Beno on the bench with Jonker with a view to absolutely taking it to the Bears front row and wear Genge and Sinkler out at scrum time - that would have to be one of the heaviest front rows in club rugby if not World rugby and we know the pitch will be heavy, if you can and it is a big CAN wear those two players out and keep them honest at the scrum that is 2 of their biggest stars especially with Fitz Harding, Stephen Luatua and Chris Vui missing which is huge.
Wouldn't be upset if Malins missed another week- class prem player who has given us the runaround many times
It being a derby game and their recent record against us complicates that demand but doesn't change it otherwise
Losing on Friday won't finish our top 4 chances but certainly makes it a lot more difficult given the fewer games to catch up compared to previous seasons
I would worry if it does become a 80+ minute muddy arm wrestle. Sure there will be big battles up front and many red zone pick n drives and the likes of the Tank will play critical roles but the closer we keep it the more likely it is we could just lose it by a point or two. We need Finn to find the gaps and space outside to keep their defence guessing - more points are more likely to come our way that way
I'm not absolutely racked with nerves yet which is testament to the growing confidence in the team. I'd take a narrow win all day long.
The big improvement last week was discipline - only 4 penalties in the 65 minutes leading up to the last Glaws try where we coughed a few up on our line. We need that again.
By Christmas we'll have played 5 home games with just 4 to come. Leicester was 3 points dropped. We can't afford the same tomorrow.
Bath Rugby XV: 1 Beno Obano, 2 Tom Dunn, 3 Will Stuart, 4 Fergus Lee-Warner, 5 Charlie Ewels, 6 Miles Reid, 7 Sam Underhill, 8 Jaco Coetzee, 9 Ben Spencer ©, 10 Finn Russell, 11 Will Muir, 12 Cameron Redpath, 13 Ollie Lawrence, 14 Joe Cokanasiga, 15 Matt Gallagher
Replacements: 16 Niall Annett, 17 Thomas du Toit, 18 Johannes Jonker, 19 GJ van Velze, 20 Alfie Barbeary, 21 Louis Schreuder, 22 Orlando Bailey, 23 Max Ojomoh
It's just so great to be able to (pretty much) name the same team each week. The few changes are, mostly, rotation and for player welfare (e.g. Redpath and Coetzee in, Mojo and Barb to the bench).
Perhaps it's JvG's biggest accomplishment to date. He said he was going to sort out our injury roster - and he has. It's never going to be perfect (back row injuries mounting) but it's SO much better than previous seasons when we had 15-20 out and were having to field new combinations every week.
In contrast, it's our opposition who are having problems and whilst I'd always rather watch the likes of Z Mercer and Luatua play, it seems that at last we've got the more settled squad to choose from.

Interesting prop selections from both teams. We've got Jonker on the bench, so TdT covering LH (where is Schoeman? Think I'd normally prefer him and TdT as TH sub). They've picked Max at TH over Sinckler (I haven't been following how much Max has been playing at TH).
Away(ish) from the front rows - Thacker at 7, against Underhill

Disappointed to see Barbeary and TDT on the bench, we are a much weaker starting side for that.
In reality they will probably get 30 mins off the bench- squad game.
I am excited about genge vs stuart and tdt vs sinckler.
I anm surprised they are risking barbeary tbh but must be confident he is fine.
Arguably only roux/ hill/ tdt missing from our best 23.
Glad we are getting our moneys worth out of flw- class player and hopefully richards ready to step into his shoes from next month in terms of being an option in the 23 as a 6 and lock
Schoeman has been excellent but again all 4 of our props are huge, strong and more importantly heavy props.
Thacker is a player I have always rated but as a hooker - he is a livewire but I am not convinced he is a backrow.
Bears centre partnership is good and should cause problems for any team - albeit both Vakatawa and Janse van Rensburg haven't had a huge amount of time together or with Sheedy.
Sounds strange and I may live to regret this comment - I feel given the perceived weather/pitch conditions relieved that AJ MacGinty is not available. Come On Bath.
Still, that means they're underdogs and we're favourites, with the expected bad weather could be a tight game.

On all the individual match ups I don't see many going Bristol's way but obviously I'm looking through a BBW prism. But even so just on that basis Bath must be good favourites though I know, how many times have we said that and been very disappointed come final whistle

I will try and dig it out but it's a pretty ugly picture across the board for the prem tho we are fairing better than most.
Saying that I think it said the Newcastle game was the first time since about 2005 the attendance at the rec had dipped below 10k for a prem match.
I have bored everyone lots with my opinions on ticket prices but think its fairly appalling and incredibly short sighted personally. I known others disagree and think it should be pure, in the moment economics.

Been to many games and Bath A league fixtures in the past. Lovely location and always good for a beer and a bit of banter. Unfortunately prices are keeping people away.
Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately I think the Club knows there are hoards of toffs and corporates who can and will pay those prices, so it doesn't need to drop them. Dread to think what the prices will be like in any new stadium.

We can’t fill the current stadium so makes you wonder why we are trying to build an 18k seater stadium?
Simply, the club(s) are pricing themselves out.

Something else to blame Eddie for. Even if he didn't start this odd habit of calling substitutes something else, he did in my mind.

Thanks, I agree. I was thinking of getting a couple of tickets for our Glos game as a treat for my son but it would be a very expensive treat at these prices. Just out of interest, what would a comparative ticket cost at AG?
We were lining up a pair of tickets for the Glos game as part of our local club doing the flag duties with pre match training courtesy of Bath but the demand outstripped what Bath were prepared to provide so it all got canned for his age group. Very disappointing, fortunately I hadn't mentioned it to him as I suspected this might happen.

Good to hear

1. Let's get a fast start so if the heavens do open, we are not chasing the game
2. I need to be better prepared for the conditions than I was for the Tigers game!
The other issue is the pitch - I know the ground staff have been flat out trying to sort out the serious issues concerning the pitch - however what really can be done with that surface and especially in under 3 weeks with the weather we have had.
We need to hit the ground running and completely smash into the Bears whose confidence will be shot given their past 3 games and in particular that last home performance - don't give them a sniff and blow them off the park. Cannot see it playing out like that - just hope we have developed enough as a side not to be dragged into an arm wrestle.

1) the weather forecast: both teams have to play in it and Bristol play an expansive game. I don't think that a wet second half gives either team an advantage;
2) our record against Bristol: has been poor, although very close (single score) last season. 2 very different teams tbf.
3) the fact we are so inconsistent: Bristol have lost their last 3 games to Quins, Exe and Sale. On that front they have definitely been more consistent.
I'm going for another very close game, hopefully home advantage swings it in Bath's favour.

Physically perhaps, but asleep mentally I'm afraid!

Do we know how to play in the rain?
Really poor second half, and so many butchered chances in the Bristol 22 in the first half.
The potential of our game when we get it right is mind blowing and it is catalyzed by Finn. You can see the confidence he gives the other players to try stuff and not worry if they fail. It's what we've lacked for years and, now we've got it, the sky is the limit.
I usually try to look beyond the obvious but sometimes you have to give in to the inevitable. Honorable mentions for Jaco Coetzee (who is starting to show his true abilities) and Ben Spencer (who should be starting for England) but...
My MotM - Ollie Lawrence. Basically unplayable.
... IMHO, of course.

Positives in performance of Coetzee and Stuart who both looked better than in recent weeks.
I think we have to accept that as we try to change our attacking game to a flat back line then we are going to make some mistakes particularly in the wet.
Thought our attitude was great and given we have lost a couple of narrow games then we deserve a narrow win.
Even as the game went against us we remained reasonably composed and found extra energy in the last ten.
Performance 6.5/10 but attitude 9/10.
Jaco carried really strongly in that first half and as other have said, Will Stuart looked better tonight.
Second half we seemed unable to get any momentum which was frustrating.
Think we overplayed a bit, especially in the second half. But very relieved to get the win.
The other thing is before when the subs came on we made mistakes, now we keep the standard up. That's a step forward.

The other thing is the class that JvG exudes, in the interview he holds the brolly for Orla while he gets wet, talks about the Premiership with feelings and recognises the losses of the big 3 plus Jersey Reds, understands his players and his role, never showing concern in the tight moments, if ever you would want to play for your coach then he is the man to do it for.

My thoughts exactly! COYB....
It wasn't very wet-- perhaps it looked worse on TV. Defence coped well with some very good stuff from the Briz backs. Ben S, Sam U and Ollie L were my standouts.
Kudos to Bristol for making a real fight of it, plenty of talent in that team but in a tight league they probably lack a bit of depth to compete in the top half.
If we could get our set piece in a place where we're consistently better than the opposition we could be pretty formidable. Obvious statement perhaps!
That's the risk you take with an attacking 10. I'd take that any day when the trade of is the sparkling rugby and we saw that in the first half.
Have to say Redpath must be superstrong! He stopped Vakatawa a couple of times quite easily and at the end of the game Ollie Lawrence jumped on him and he just kept walking, didn't bat an eyelid.
I've decided Joe C is fine as long as he doesn't have time to think! He had a great last 15 minutes.

A quick nod to the team who relaid the pitch. I haven’t seen the TV view yet but from my seat in the ground it looked as if the 8% plastic fibres that they’ve sown in did their job and it held up pretty well under testing conditions.

I thought the pitch stood up pretty well in the conditions.
Not sure what happened to Bath in the second half, we just seemed to lack intensity. After the first half I was expecting Bath to push on and destroy Bristol and not be hanging on for the win.
Credit to all involved though as we’d definitely have lost that game a couple of seasons ago.
Only real concerns are the lack of scrum dominance and the usual lineout issues.

Second half we seemed unable to get any momentum which was frustrating.
And the lineout. Think we only lost one of our own lineouts.

To be able to look forward to Bath's games with relish and expect to see some spirited, flair rugby, a team that is finally a team and even some exciting attacking rugby thrown in is a fan's joy long wished.
It's here, just enjoy.
And the lineout. Think we only lost one of our own lineouts.
J[/quote]
First line outs went very well. After about 30 mins I recall us struggling. Briz seemed to have worked us out. Stole a few, made a mess of others and we seemed to have several line outs where we were shilly-shallying and looking a bit confused which never bodes well. Conversely pretty sure Briz won every one of theirs with perhaps one that wasn't taken cleanly. Delighted we scraped a win. At the end the defensive line held up well and the discipline was good, but our set piece needs work and, like hasta said, I hope TdT is left in his favoured position.

We certainly don’t look like a top 4 side on that showing. We can be sensational in patches but we’re lucky to come away with a win after a dreadful 2nd half.
I think it does show potential for a top 4 side, keeping in games when you necessarily shouldn’t. How many times did Sarries win last year whilst being outplayed for large parts ? Lots.
Just about consistency really, didn’t control the game really second half but very good scramble d kept us in it.

I've decided Joe C is fine as long as he doesn't have time to think! He had a great last 15 minutes.
No doubt JPF will be having a private session with him concerning his defensive positioning duties!
I thought his defence was top notch forced the Piers knock on second half when they were getting momentum. Made some very big hits. Not his fault he had to cover for Gallagher, he if stays on his wing then they chip over the top so the cross field kick is not on him.
Very much reminds me of Raheem sterling who also is a world
Class player when he doesn’t have time to think just does things instantly.

Very true, its just if he gets to the breakdown first you get the feeling he should be looking and the biro on his arm where it tells him what to do next.
Early penalty for offside at the chase was awful, and he needs to be more aware of these cross kicks, then he goes and makes three important tackles late in the game!

Difficult to judge the performance, Bristol certainly played well and easily won the second half, if we are to be in the running at the end of the season we need to improve in the set piece. As in previous years I think Bath are still much happier on a dry pitch.
Never quite sure about Joe C, he tends to spend most of the the match looking lost, thought it was because he is still young and had that injury, but he doesn't seem to be improving. Great when given the ball and told to run but his other skills around the park need improving quite a lot if he is going to be more than a good prospect. He seems to lack confidence, maybe Finn will be able to bring him into the game more.
Bath should have been prepared for that play.
It was never going to be a thrashing for either side although when we went up 17-7 I honestly thought we might pull away but the weather did us absolutely no favours again.
The pitch did brilliantly considering where it as after the Tigers game.
The coaches will be relieved we got that one out of the way with a win, Bristol have had the “wood” on us in the recent past and just seem to know how to beat us - so a Winnis precious.
I do believe we lack a hulking 2nd row - Quinn Roux cannot come back quick enough and we will definitely need him at Sale next Friday.
Overall an excellent win and a good game. Come on Bath!

Pretty much how I saw it. Jaco had an immense game, the best I've seen him in the BBW
We were so close in first half several times to getting the third try that could have put us in position to nail the game
Muir's inside offload to Joe 10 metres out with walk in to the tryline . The sublime chip through that just died on Joe but a pop up and he was over
Our pen count for the first 60 mins was incredibly low. That was never the case under Hooper. And in my view a couple of those later scrum pens we conceded in second half could so easily have gone our way as Briz props looked pushing in at the angle
But the other big improvement was that last 5 minutes defence to keep them away from kickable pen and any line break. As others have said, in previous years we would have lost that one
A third of the way through and we are certainly in the mix for top 4. Very happy with that
One more mention, overall I thought it was very well reffed including some sensible, quick TMO decisions that too often go to way too lengthy multiple TV slow mo
Also echo praise for JvG, JPF and LB. We’re not perfect but we are improving.

The cross field kick for Bristol’s second try was irritating as that same combination scored a hatrick for them a few weeks back.
Bath should have been prepared for that play.
Shouldn’t Joe have been marking his opposing winger. He was just standing in no-man’s land.

I do find the Irish presenter, Orla, on TNT rather annoying. She knows her rugby but I don’t like her sensationalist presenting style. It’s a shame that Sara Elgin seems to have been dropped in her favour. for some reason.
No different from Ugo's description of a dire East Midlands derby.
It's what sports anchors do - they're constantly trying to build up the matches, to sell them to the occassional viewer.

FB went to cover the Bristol attack down the left wing.
=> Right wing comes infield to play full back.
=> ANOther player (usually FH) drops back to cover the space the right wing has just left.
Unforutnately, the players available are backrowers, so can't be trusted to spot that on their own, so I'd call it a communication error.

Either way it was obvious Bristol were going to use that tactic so Bath should have made plans for it.
Fortunately we have battling qualities now that enabled us to win when not playing particularly well.

Joe C overcovered by about 5-10m, no one dropped back to cover him.
Mentioned by Topsy Ojo (on my commentary) who said Joe should've told Miles Reid to hold cover for about 5 more seconds to let him get across.
... IMHO, of course.

I'd need to watch it again to say, but I'm not convinced that Joe over-covered; he's got to position himself to cover a chip from the FH, or a player making a bust 1 pass out from the new ruck - without any real depth to hold.
* Then it's a question of if Joe communicated, if he communicated bu didn't put a name on it, if he communicated but wasn't heard, if he needed to double check that he was heard, and if he could afford the time to double check whilst also having to move fairly quickly to cover the FB position.

I will say that after Genge and Sinks first scrum win (which looked ominous) in general we did a good job of holding it up, not looking to attack but just securing ball and not giving away penalties every time. I still reckon TdT is better on the tight head though. And it feels like our locks are a little light.
Agree, we adapted well to hold our own against 2 v good props.
Think you are right on tdt- primarily a tighthead, seems a bit more happy there.
It's a v good point on our lock selection- people tend to focus heavily on props but having a big bummed lump of a lock doesn't half help them.
We effectively had a blindside and a jumping/loosehead lock behind them.
Agree with ali's point that getting roux back ASAP would be a big bonus- our best tighthead lock I think and hope he is OK. Worrying he is still out 5 weeks after a head knock.
Tighthead lock would be my priority signing for next season personally if any good ones available and realistic

Lineout is changing I think, Ewels now a regular winner and Reid wins a fair bit as well. Reid just gets better each game. He might get criticism for not scoring recently (harsh to my mind) and not covering Joe C but the point is not many 6s get in those 'back' dilemmas in the first place.

Hill is a good lineout jumper aswell.
My main point was we selected a lightweight second row pairing which prob had implications at scrumtime.

TRP reports a 14,509 sell out at the Rec on Friday night. A few ST holders might not make a Fri night game so some gaps were inevitable but still a good turn out on a wet autumn night...
Got there in the end but even up until afternoon of the game the club was tweeting tickets to sell.
Such a big local derby with the likes of Russell and Vakatawa on display should really have been sold out sometime ago
Maybe it was the ticket pricing but whatever the factor it suggests the interest in the game is not as strong as it needs to be to continue without something significant changing
Quote:hasta
I just think ticket pricing is a massive factor. £35 behind the posts in the open and wet is annoying, but bearable. £81 is unconscionable. I suspect it particularly puts off travelling fans.
It absolutely does put travelling fans off. Met a couple in the pub prior to the game and they asked why Bath are ripping off fans. They were in Bath for the weekend and were going to come to the game, but refused to pay £81 to stand.
Maybe at the next ST event Tarquin could explain the rationale for extortionate pricing.

Mates stood by me on terrace paid £59 hasta. Surprised if any available for £35. £91 to sit above terraces at Clubhouse end. Crazy prices even if they did sell out. Soon watching us play will be seen as akin to watching opera or something similarly exclusive.
£35 is the direct comparison to last year, it's what I paid to sit above the terrace for the Saints game.
One guy posting examples of Spencer faking to box kick from a caterpillar. One a quick straight break that made 15m and put Briz on back foot scrambling to cover and another passing to short side attack
I hadn't noticed that but like it, keeps defenders guessing
And Sheridan enjoying a beer at the game with Hats who still refers to Bath as "we" and "us" Got to love that guy. Tho it was right for him to move on, every best wish to him and his family

Not only that it stops defenders drifting, he is pretty fast as well, it's rare that when he makes a supporting break that he fails to score.

As to the game, and the season, strikes me that Spencer is born again hard with arrival of Finn. I mean it looked like he was trying to somehow carry the team by himself til end of last season but now liberated by having that quality at ten.

And especially after England did so well in the very recent WC, you’d have thought there’d be a few curious neutrals, maybe footie fans, coming to have a look.
What’s that? England bored the living *%#€ out of even existing fans you say.
As others including JvG have said, the way we managed the last 5-10 minutes is encouraging. "One well-managed last 10 minutes does not a title-winning team make" but the number of experienced leaders we now have on the field at the 75 minute mark (inc the likes of TDT and GJVV) who are calling the shots in those clutch periods, is significant. Blimey, Ben Spencer is a great player- he has to win more England caps.
Far from perfect, but it's Monday morning and we're second, scoring length of the field tries and having fun whilst also grinding out wins up front and with our defence against our local rivals. Happy days... maybe even happier days up ahead.

This game, for me is really and truly about the performance and in particular working on the things that weren't right in the second half last week
Keeping the Finn and Cam partnership working and building together makes a lot of sense to me but Max is developing very nicely so I'm very comfortable with whichever combo JvG goes with
It's pretty much what we have done so far and served us well.
I think it's achievable to win both- don't really see the need to 'target' one and hope for a lbp at best for the other when we have a 7 day turnaround and then an 8 day turnaround (and the smallest injury list we have bad for years).

If we beat Sale away then we will be regarded as very strong contender for top 2.
In my view that is ahead of plan. I just don't think it is realistic with the squad limitations, likely injuries and also quality of other squads to pile all resources into striving to win every game
A more realistic progression will be to win virtually every home game with 3 away wins. That also keeps the home fan base happy and more likely to turn up each week
That's why I reckon we can accept an LBP at Sale as a good result and select team accordingly but, for me, also why it means Exeter at home is a must win

I take your points and agree with you in some ways- feels hard to pick a side to get a lbp but not a win. Suppose if that was the intention against saints then it worked!
Think when there was 26 league games and 6 euro games then targeting certain fixtures with heavy rotation seems absolutely required. Less convinced now its 18 league games and 4 euro games personally.
I reckon what we are doing currently is fine- using about 30-35 players in the 23 week to week, rotating players on and off the bench, resting a few completely.
We could rotate for sale and some changes would make us arguably stronger - du toit, roux (hopefully), barbeary, tdg. Would be fine with that! The only positions with significant drop off I think are at halfback and that's a really tricky one to approach.
Defo need to manage game time but personally wouldn't go in deliberately under powered against sale with an eye on the exeter game. The 2 games I have seen exeter play I was sort of impressed but not intimidated and would certainly fancy our chances. Their win vs sale obviously a great showing.
Top 4 doesn't really achieve much in itself other than a likely defeat away to sarries- I would rather die trying to make top 2 I think. Jvg will have loads of data, loads of opinions from specialists , conversations with players etc to feed into all this- I trust him to make good decisions.
If I was ' sacrificing wins' I would prob do that in Europe personally.
As soon, however he and Danny Care discussed contenders for the title - they name Saracens as likely Champions once again, Sale, Quins and Northampton along with Tigers - we do not even get a mention, which I found really interesting especially from Care given he has not even played us yet and apparently written us off - happy with that.
I find it quite pleasing that we are flying under the radar so to speak, I also find it quite strange how we are overlooked when you consider that we have picked up points in every match we have played in and but for the Tigers slip up we would have been top including beating Sarries at their home - who yes were missing their England players but still fielded a very strong side that day.
It is clear we need a Tight Head second row which to be fair was mentioned by Jim Hamilton, Andy Goode and Andy Rowe on the Rugby Pod who stated we were a bit light in the second row - otherwise they think we have the squad to challenge anyone and with Finn Russell the ability to beat anyone.
This Friday will be interesting - Tom Curry out for the season which is a huge blow for Sharks and their hopes - IMHO we desperately need Quinn Roux back and firing - I personally do not see why we cannot go to Manchester with our squad minus Ollie and dry conditions which at present are forecast to be dry and not only get a LBP but win with a BP.
However, I'm happy to leave it up to JvG as I think he's managing the squad very well. I just hope we don't pick a squad that is clearly rotating/resting. Of course, a DoR will always state that they intend to win every game but some of the squads that have been sent to Sale away (e.g. Glos) have been clearly done for preservation purposes, rather than with the clear intention of getting a win.
Annett for Dunn... fine. McCon for JCok... fine. TdG for Gallagher... fine. But I don't want 10 x u23s.
Funny old season... if we'd caught a restart v Leicester, we'd be top. But if Sheedy had kicked his pen, we'd all be thinking very differently. Game of fine margins- but it does feel like the belief and the squad we have, especially its injury status, will put us on the right of the ledger more often than not.
2024/25 adoptee: Guy Pepper
I'm not sure I understand the thinking that says we go all top guns out to get a win at Sale but believe a semi away at Saracens will be a likely defeat
