Aquae Sulis vs Isca Dumnoniorum

How’s that for a historical fixture? Hold on, I hear you cry – Exeter Chiefs only won promotion to the Premiership in 2010. However, a delve into Bath Rugby’s history shows that the first game played at The Rec took place on 6th October 1894, with the opponents being Exeter. The Chronicle at the time reported “It was after 4 ere the game commenced before a fairly large crowd of spectators considering the sixpenny gate”. That’s 2.5p for those of you considerably younger than I am. Clearly the cost of tickets raised a few eyebrows in those days too!
If you take the M5, there’s about 98 miles between The Rec and Sandy Park. It’s a bit less if you follow the line of the old Roman Fosse Way, but it’s still too far in my view to be described as a “local derby”. It is however a mouth watering fixture between two West Country teams currently flying high in the Premiership, both of whom can play an attractive, flowing brand of rugby mixed with a pragmatic power-based game when necessary.
A much-rotated Bath Rugby lost narrowly away to Premiership leaders Sale in the last round. Exeter, fielding a starting lineup unchanged from the one point win against Gloucester, worked hard to overturn a 14-8 half time deficit to run out 14-20 winners at Kingston Park against a Newcastle side who are arguably playing better rugby than their zero wins from seven games played so far would suggest. That win lifted Exeter above Bath into third position in the table, but who will take most from last weekend?
A win’s a win and Exeter head coach Ali Hepher was rightly upbeat about it in his post-match interview With BBC Radio Devon, whilst acknowledging that there were elements of the game that needed working on. It’s probably fair to say that Exeter’s pack came up with the goods to turn the game around and JvG and his coaching team will be alive to that. Many of us felt that when Exeter came to the Rec on 26th March 23 at the back end of last season, they underestimated Bath and paid the price with a 36-19 loss. They won’t do that again.
Remember those days when it felt as if you could write the score from a trip to the
A J Bell before the game had happened? It’s a sign of the changing times at Bath that instead of being happy to come away with a losing bonus point, we could be forgiven for feeling a bit disappointed that the boys couldn’t quite get over the line for the win and bring home the four points. I think we all knew that with a huge home game this week and the start of the European campaign rapidly approaching, JvG would opt for some squad rotation, but I for one didn’t see quite that many changes with key players across the squad either being rested or starting from the bench.
Sale were almost fully “locked and loaded” and on past experience it should have been a fairly straightforward game for them. Except it wasn’t! Some commentators have compared this game unfavourably with the high scoring match taking place at Franklins Gardens but that’s not completely fair. Our game was absorbing but for different reasons. Having gone into half time with a slender but deserved 4 point lead, the boys in BB&W defended with real dog against a Sale side who threw everything including the kitchen sink at them. A huge tackle count and a number of critical turnovers by the likes of Will Butt kept the lead until George Ford kicked what would prove to be the winning penalty in the 73rd minute. You can’t give the likes of George Ford, or Henry Slade for that matter, kickable penalties at critical moments. So no, some things didn’t go quite to plan. The set pieces at the scrum and the lineout will have needed some work this week, but I’ll still take that. Not so much the score, but that performance by a rotated team who came very close to ending Sale’s run of wins at home says positive things about the coaching and the spirit in the Squad, so in the expectation that we’ll see the return of many of the players rested for Sale, I’m feeling good about this one.
The weather looks good for Saturday, currently predicted to be dry and cold. The newly relaid pitch which held up well in the game against the Bears has had another couple of weeks to bed down, so all in all I’m hoping for another game in which Finn can unleash our increasingly dangerous looking back division. Of course, that very much depends on whether we can establish parity, or even better, dominance against a very strong Exeter pack. The Chiefs will put us under pressure at times but on the basis of the evidence of last week at Sale, our defence coaches are giving the team the tools to deal with it.
Heading to the Rec with the expectation of a win rather than travelling in hope is a new feeling for many supporters and brings back fond memories for the slightly older ones amongst us. The score in 1894 was 22-0 to Bath. I don’t think it will be quite that, but with the Rec in full voice behind the team I think we’ll do it.
Last week showed how difficult it is to predict team selection, but I’d expect us to be as close to full strength as possible for this one. We’ll miss Fergus Lee-Warner, but maybe we’ll see the return of Elliott Stooke at some point. My guess (without knowing who may have picked up an injury last week) is something like this, but I recognise there’s plenty of room for debate about who should play, which is a great position to be in!
De Glanville, Cokonasiga, Lawrence, Ojomoh, Muir, Russell, Spencer, Obano, Dunn, Stuart, McNally, Ewels, Reid, Underhill, Barbeary.
Replacements: Annett, Schoeman, du Toit, Stooke, Coetzee, Gallagher, Redpath, Schreuder.

And will they travel up the Fosse Way to get here?
PG
Think I would go:
Tdg, coko, lawrence, redpath, muir, finn, spencer
Beno, dunn, stuart, mcnally, ewels, reid, underhill, coetzee
Bench: schoeman , annett, griffin, stooke, barbeary, TCS, bailey, mojo
11 changes to starting xv.
Give tdt a rest as been pretty much ever present in the squad ( and prob the only player used every week) Needs looking after as a key player.
Would keep coetzees run at 8 going and continue to manage barbeary
Reward griffin for a decent showing off bench and make sure he has the bulk of stooke to help him. Think stooke has been training with us 2 was now so hopefully up to speed and been playing regularly at montpellier so must be in good nick. Assume roux still out.
Give TCS another go off the bench.
Tempting to also keep gjvv/ richards/ cloete/ butt involved from last week but can't please everyone!

Of course, games v Sale and Leicester were decided by (questionable...) scrum penalties against us and our lineout has been far from perfect. But both have felt better than in recent seasons, although that could just be because we've won more games than in recent seasons.
Obviously, we'd like to be more consistent in the lineout and more dominant in the scrum, but I'd be interested to know where we are relative to other teams.

Hoping we go strong in this one but got a niggly feeling JvG is going to rotate Finn this week.

Exeter have some monster porps, so although TdT probably due a rest, having him come on at tighthead in the second half could be really helpful.
Agree but next week its ulster and potentially kitschoff?
I would prioritise exeter over that personally and consider resting him from the euro games.

Across the league are we really THAT weak on scrum and lineout?

I think the rugby paper had a table at weekend.
From memory we are 10th in lineout and 8th in scrum (or other way round).
Lineout is prsemubaly based on clean wins on own throw/ steals.
Scrum based on winning your own ball , against the head, getting a pen/conceding a pen.
The ranking seems to back up our feeling set piece is a major concern.

Tbf it wouldn't take much to change position as all quite banked up together.
Encouraging really we can have a misfiring set piece and be top 4 as you say

Exactly, just think how good we could be if the set piece didn’t let us down every week. The backs must be really frustrated.

It helps that we've stopped doing 'Big Box, Little Box' when trying to catch the ball! Better ball retention & less knock-ons!

Other than that, great squad. Good to see some youth on the bench, and the XV is very strong. Weather looks good, so hopefully Spencer and Finn can boss it and it'd be lovely to go well up front, with Stooke storming about the place.

Love that they keep trusting the likes of griffin, TCS and harris. They will only get better by playing in high profile games.
Exeter will cause us some problems in the last 25 with painter and tuima off the bench- big boys who are strong scrummagers.

Does it really? From what I've seen there have been a couple of lineouts in the red zone that have been lost but nothing else of real significance. And a couple of critical scrum pens that were given against us that actually might just as easily gone our way
To me, it is more about stronger cohesiveness that will come in time rather than area for real concern
I think that this could be the match of the weekend. Enjoy the game and here's to an entertaining afternoon with no injuries or cards.

Must be a reason they have swapped 12 and 13 around, I'd suggest it's to counter Joe Hawkins who is coming on in leaps and bounds!
I think it's more because Redpath is an out-and-out 12, with Mojo having more pace. JVG said he'd come on hugely defensively so he was now 'trusted' (his words I think) to play 13.

sensible to rest tdt and assume lawrence in need of a decent break.

Personally I'm a bit concerned that we are resting TDT given the strength of the Chief's pack.
I will also be showing appreciation for Tom Foley an official from our great city who has received vile abuse following the RWC. Here is hoping he has a warm reception in his home City and has a good game.
Going to be a cold one hope all wrap up well and have safe travels.

A bit of a digression but as an old fogie I don't do much on social media but today on twitter I posted a reply on a Bath fan thread saying how great it was to see Stooke back in the BBW. And the big man liked my reply. Might seem a bit weird for an old guy like me but I felt so chuffed that he made the time and effort to do that. Top banana

As an aside Bath is an absolute nightmare today due to the bloody Xmas market!!
I’d take the same today.

Canny from Barbeary.
What I really like is when we have a poor 10-15 minutes we don't let it get to us anymore.
Had the handling been better in the first half it would have been close to 60.
41-24 FT
5 points for Bath, zilch for Exeter.
Generally a very good performance, front row, both starters and subs were rock solid.
And Tom Foley was very good too.

A very canny effort to turn the screw during the yellow card.
Quote:Dorset Boy
And Tom Foley was very good too.
He was fine but I have no idea how exeter kept 15 men on the pitch til 60 mins.
Must have been a record for pens conceded in own 22 before a card! At minimum should have come a few mins earlier for the pen when they were scrambling within 10 yds of their line.
They were really smart exeter but not that smart!
I text a mate when Townsend went to the bin saying 'jugular time' and blimey we put them away- impressive!
A few wobbles at lineout but set piece generally v good against a team who have solid basics - thought exeter didn't do much wrong and it was still comfortable.
No fresh injuries from what I saw?
Thought underhill and barbeary were stand out with spencer and the centres not far behind. Hats of to front row- rock solid.
Exciting to think about how good we might be if ever full strength (I know a rarity in our league) and Finn has had months rather than weeks with Blackett to shape our attack. For now, enjoy the win, the six try hammering-ish of a rival, and the fact we’re joint top.

Light years beyond what Dickson is capable of.
Quote:Dorset Boy
CharlieBoa - I do agree that the yellow should have come a few minutes earlier for cynically killing the ball on their line following one of our breaks, but tbf, that was really the only question over Foley's performance in my mind.
Light years beyond what Dickson is capable of.
Agreed.
If a fan as one eyed as me is only moaning about one thing its a minor miracle
The first two Exe tries were soft. First phase lineout moves through the middle. They will be on the big screen in Mondays debrief.
Other than that, lived it. Great to Stookey back. Spencer was excellent as per. Back row brilliant. Ewels deserves praise too - going about his business with real intent and no fuss. Loved Redpath's feet and Finn's passing..
We should have scored 60 but 40 will do.
Happy days.
Quote:hasta
Anyone else get Cooper/Elvis vibes from the Spencer try?
Loved that try, clever from Spencer and Russell who took the defence and put them on totally the wrong foot as Spencer went blind. If Borthwick doesn't give him a go then you have to think BS must have damaged SB's tomato plants or something.

Quote:gaz59
Just wondering how the game might have gone had Finn scored the pen instead of hitting the post and we scored from the subsequent scrum
I was bemoaning his chilled (lackadaisical) attitude to kicking after that miss but maybe it was deliberate

2024/25 adoptee: Guy Pepper
The joy of Finn is he attracts attention - which benefits Spencer in particular so much.
I watched Sam Harris specifically after he came on, really solid in defence and clearly intelligent on the pitch. It's not just giving the younger guys experience. It's giving them experience in a confident team.
JvG has been here less than 18 months. Yes he's had a little fortune and yes he's been well funded. But what a joy it is too watch Bath with expectation again.

There is a big case for him as MoM. Nothing flash but everything he did in scrum, lineout and general play was very assured, strong and no errors
Will always be happy to see his name on the team sheet

Not sure if it was the queuebusters of Tribute, but Finn kicked that right in front of me and Underhill and co were looking very keen stood next to him. I had a feeling it might come back into play.

Very appropriate to be the Bath player to field the first kick off. Welcome back Stookey.
But.
There’s few players in world rugby who I would rather have in the team because of his attitude. That strut, the carefree nature, the confidence/arrogance. I feel it’s infecting those around him and so whilst he’s not quite at his best individually, others are playing up as a result of him simply being there. Mojo and Redpath bursting with smiles and energy. Griffen and Harris off the bench and fitting right in. Spencer tapping quick pens and going from 80m to make himself tries. It’s not all Finn- but as I’ve said elsewhere his attitude is the opposite of Priestland’s “weight of Bath on his shoulders” approach, and it’s cranking every other player up a notch or two.
A guy like Stooke, a loud personality, team man, must love the new setup. Pretty awesome for him, with Wasps bust, he’s been to France and now back working with Blackett and Finn at Bath. Happy days.

Obviously it’s easy to say this after a win, but the fun has come back watching Bath. Almost feels like Mike Ford’s 2015 team and it’s been a long time since we’ve got near to that.
As others have mentioned, how good is it to see young players managed properly. Gone are the days of them being chucked into the meat grinder to face a 60 point drilling.
Have to take your hat off to Baxter, rebuild seems to be going well. Thought Roots looked very good for them this afternoon, a real Baxter signing through and through. Looking forward to the return fixture.
Stooke and Ewels looked like the partnership we could/should have had, the back row were immense and the backs definitely tried something more than hoofing the ball away.
Quote:by
I do wonder how many will get a call up for the 6N. Underhill seems to have been rejuvenated after his England omission, playing like he has a point to prove.
Eagerly awaiting OM's 'Life of Brian'-esque critique of Underhill's performance: "What has Underhill ever done?"... ”Apart from the tackling"... "Okay apart from the tackling and the Jackalling at key moments"..."Okay, apart from the tackling and the Jackalling and the carrying and the work rate... What has Underhill ever done!?"

This could be your year. I was going to say, about time , but I won’t!
In all seriousness, I was pleased that we stayed in the game for 60 mins but always felt that the last 20, irrespective of yellow card, would cost us given the relative bench strength.
Thought Redpath was superb and tho Finn’s reputation counts for a lot, it was enough despite him not having his best game. Ojomoh’s good isn’t he?!?!
Disappointed, but not surprised that Bath dominated the breakdown, but proud of our new team’s attitude and endeavour.
Chiefs 2.0 will take time but keep watching. We haven’t the cash your owner chucks around but it work before and 🤞it will again.
Our attacking play showed real imagination and that is a sentence we never thought we would hear last year.
- The Redpath try included some passes that we would never have tried last year; both Reid and Ojo threw passes out the back of their hands.
- The Spencer try was so simple in execution but involved a great feint from Finn, who is so heavily marked that he makes space for others, and then the timing of the passes was superb between Spencer and Joe C.
- Barbeary gives that additional carrying threat that we have missed for years .
Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 2023:12:02:22:55:07 by Never In Doubt.
My MotM - Alfie. We haven't had carrying like that since Nathan but now its part of a complete team approach instead of just all we have to offer. It's also from a guy with a bubble perm, a *very* dodgy 'tache and a boatload of attitude which should really irritate the opposition going forward. I hope Borthwick wasn't watching.
... IMHO, of course.

Exeter look like they have nice balance to their game and are v savvy for a young team.
Defensively they were at times excellent inc in the maul where we were made to work incredibly hard for any success..
Hawkins and slade are nice to watch and Jenkins will be amazing.
The fact we comfortably won despite making a fair few mistakes/ not ramming home our advantage til last 20 is encouraging. Feels like someone may get a proper hammering if one day it all comes together.
I fear we may face lots of eng call ups (could make a not absurd case for about 10 players!) but hard to second guess england selection and at least less/no fixture clashes now.
Roll on ulster- kitschoff vs Thomas the tank!?
Next league games are quins home, leic away, glos home. Would be hopeful of getting something out of all those. Please don't send the seconds to leic, that is v winnable (would rather we rest several for Cardiff personally a fortnight before or take our chances without a few frontliners vs glos)

Agree with this is Exeter in rebuild mode, we saw yesterday some outstanding back rows, Underhill the best of them but Barbeary was close behind and Miles Reid does much of the work to allow SU and AB to excel but I was seriously impressed by Ethan Roots. Was good at Ospreys but better at Exeter, shame he is a Kiwi.

Stooke was indeed excellent. He looks a little leaner and fitter than before.
Shame he is only with us on a medical joker contract and seems we have Snyman lined up for the beefy second row. Would be very happy to retain him for next year
If we are offloading 2nd rows then mcnally (34 by next season), roux (recently turned 33), and gj vv (36 by next season?) may be at more risk if off contract.
Wouldn't write them off based on age but not great injury records in recent times which doesn't often reverse in your mid 30s ( catty and other notable exceptions)...and stooke is a few years younger at 30 and a great option at 4,5 and 6.
Hard to disagree.

Looking at the Butt try that was a miracle piece of work by Gallagher to pick up the fading ball at full stretch and put the kick in. Brilliantly picked up off the floor then finished by Muir and Butt. Not possible without a knock on a year ago. Quality handling.
That and the Max Ojomoh pass out wide in the build up to the Redpath try was just sublime brilliance
If we cut out our habit of shooting ourselves in the foot we'll do very well this season.

The scoreline massively flattered Chiefs, and that was without our two best players. We were totally dominant and left a few more tries out there.

I would have said 3 best player BO: du Toit, Ted Hill and Ollie L would be in my first 15. I watched it back and agree that Exeter didn't show much, what they got was Bath switching off and the score difference could have been greater. Excellent to get another win though.
4 points between 1st and 6th after 8 games is crazy, what a competitive prem season thus far for nearly all teams - bar Gloucester who look awful and Newcastle who are massively out of their depth in this league. Sadly Alex Codling looked a broken man in his interview at the end of this weeks game.
