Leicester v Bath - Should auld acquaintance be forgot….
Happier times
By Devonport Boy
December 26 2023
The words of Robert Burns will be sung in millions of households at midnight on December 31st but before that there is the small matter of two famousold rugby teams renewing their acquaintance atMattioli Woods Welford Road that afternoon, not that we need much re-acquainting; we’ve been close rivals for well over a century!
I know I’ve said it before but whilst the media make a great deal of local derbys, the Bath vs Tigers fixture has always been one that supporters of both teams (well, those of us of a certain age anyway!) regard as probably the most important of the season. For many of us these matches are a real yardstick of how good we are. There’ve been so many great matches over the years. The 47 -10 win at the Rec in the Premiership semi-final in 2015 is one that always crops up when reminiscing about these games, but arguably the 19-18 win on 11 November 22 was more important and could be regarded as something of a turning point. The noise at the Rec when Will Butt scored that try on around 81 minutes was simply incredible!
Enough of the history. What can we look forward to on Saturday? Bath go into this game at the top of the Premiership (it’s been a long time since we could say that) and are playing some of the most entertaining rugby that we’ve seen for years. The Cardiff game a couple of weeks ago was almost a case of “back to the future” – remember the days when the Bath mantra was “it doesn’t matter how many you score, we’ll score more”? Last week against Quins underlined the strength in depth across the current team. I spoke to a number of the visiting supporters before the match and they were all confident that (a) the Rec would be a swamp which would disintegrate almost immediately, (b) that Messrs Marler & co would dominate our pack, (c) that Danny Care and Marcus Smith would run rings around Ben Spencer and Finn Russell. That’ll be wrong on three out of three counts then!
The “stitching” together with some superb work by the ground staff has transformed the Rec pitch which now holds up early well even in atrocious weather. The pack can hold its own with anybody these days and dominate later in the game. At one point in the second half, Joe Marler (who as always had played his heart out) was in front of us with his hands on his knees, clearly knackered. Well, you have to deal with Beno Oban, Niall Annett and Thomas du Toit for 50 or so minutes and then Will Stuart, Tom Dunn and Juan Schoeman take their tracksuits off! That’s got to be demoralising. Finn and Ben both did their thing and did it well – what a partnership that’s developing into, although we could have done without the sight of Ben holding his hamstring late in the game. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. There were great performances all over the pitch, but how brilliant was it to see Joe Cokanasigarunning hard at and straight over defences? The sight of Joe and Will Muir in full flight alone are worth the trip to the Rec.
JvG has always maintained that making Bath hard to beat is a key priority, and that’s happening, with our losses being by small margins especially in comparison with previous seasons. But let’s not forget that one of those losses was to Tigers at the Rec a short while ago. Yes, the concession of a last minute scrum penalty following a dropped restart was an unlucky set of circumstances, but you make your own luck and it re-emphasised what most of us knew from years of watching – Tigers have got “dog” and will fight for the full 80 minutes. If we want to beat them at their home then we’ve got to do the same. Tigers come into this game in 8th place in the table on the back of a 29-10 defeat away at Exeter whilst we’re defending our position at the top of the Premiership. But it’s in the nature of these games over the years that table position means very little once the whistle goes. Leicester will fancy this one in front of a huge home crowd and they will come at us with all the ferocity of the Tigers of old. We’ll need to deal with that and make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. I think we’ll win, but it’s going to be close.
As other reviewers have said, it’s very difficult to predict JvG’s selections. I’ve got a feeling that he may rotate a number of players for this one. Some of those decisions may be injuries; I hope Ben’s OK but Alfie Barbearylooked in a lot of pain after he went off on Saturday. That said, I hope we maintain a strong core of experience and “grunt” for this one. I’ll leave it to some of our braver contributors to stick their necks out and try to predict the team!
It’s great as a supporter to come to the end of the year and be able to reflect on the season so far and the “train journey” from where we were at this time last year to the top of the Premiership and two wins from two in our pool in the Champions Cup. There’s a long way to go yet, but we now know that we can, and will, be competitive at the highest levels and that’s a fantastic feeling. We’re all very tribal as supporters but rugby is imbued with a generosity of spirit which means that particularly at his time of year we can also spare a thought for our fellow rugby supporters who no longer have a team to followand wish better days for them.
Happy New Year to Bath Rugby and all of us supporters. Not just for “Auld Land Syne” but for what’s to come!

Full steam ahead please, whatever the team.
Hopefully, in terms of train journey, we will be travelling First Class at the season's end!
Meanwhile, let us hope the BBW can give us a second weekend of celebration!

However with tigers performing well below par this is a chance to get a really good away win. I think either way there are a few players for this game that for differing reasons need to be in the starting team - Stooke, Coetzee, Bailey, Muir, Cokanasiga
Underhill also not wearing a boot today so take of that what you will

Bench: annett, du toit, griffin, mcnally, TCS, bailey, richards.
Give beno, dunn, ewels, reid, alfie, spencer a rest with a view to winning against glos and in Europe a week later. All played a hell of a lot of rugby in the last 2-3 months. 6:2 bench split.
I would personally rest and rotate slightly less than that and go with something v strong- have 1 or 2 of those guys I have down for a rest at least on the bench. Love loaded benches !
Stewart in as rumour he will be in 23 and if so would rather he started and we have a solid bench option.
Would be a massive bonus if underhill was available- would throw him into the xv if fully fit. Sounds like bayliss may be more like mid Jan.
It is tough for Cloete as he’s probably painted a bad picture now for refs so more likely to get on the wrong side of 50/50 calls. I don’t think coaches will mind those calls against him as he’s going for it, it’s the sprinting out the line to allow a try or missing a tackle on a 9 that you would just expect better.

Got to feel that this is one of Cloete’s last chance at both competition for the Backrow and contract long-term. Just seems as though him and Tonks will just be unnecessary.

I think we have to remember he is nearly 33, he may just have lost a bit of pace so is compensating by going early. He may need to rethink his game.

Agreed he has lost the pace, however it was only 2021 when he won the turnover king award. Can see Bayliss quickly overtaking him once fit, he was one of our best hecklers last season miles ahead of Cloete.
Fustrating as having a Will Evans type player available even if not first choice can be vital for some games. Probably one of the only JVG transfers to have not worked.

Oddschecker has Bath favourites at 1/2ish and Tigers at 2/1ish. This may change when selections are announced. Feels odd but justified to be favourites for an away fixture at Welford Rd. COYB!
Leicester are favourites @ 8/13, Bath 15/8.

The ability to debate loudly in midfield is yes another skill brought to the club by JvG, his attention to detail is excellent.

Wow, thats a B team (at best) and contains quite a few who are (IMO) not up to Prem standard. For example Worboys is playing in Nat 1 for Chinnor? Similarly Louie Hennessey isn't there yet. I don't see how getting a battering would do anyone any good, the players or Bath (given the current momentum).

Tigers are a better side than their table positions suggests but like Sale and Chiefs you know what you are going to get albeit I do think this season it has been more about us imposing our game on opposition rather than worrying how to stop them - which is a key shift in mentality and has a lot to do with Finn and his leadership as much as anything,
We have pretty much zero chance of winning it.
We have a decent chance of winning the prem (or at least making play offs).
I can live with 5-10 changes with some rotation of the xv and some rested completely.
Any more and I will be disappointed personally.
I think the aim should be to plot through the next 3 weeks aiming to win all 3 games, I think the squad is too good to effectively throw one of those games.
Quote:copester
Losing at Leicester whilst resting the first team won't define our season but losing at home to Gloucester with a tired squad could. We put 60 past Saracens last season, 2 weeks later they were premiership champions. JvG is clearly prioritising Europe, a competition he admits to love.
I get your point but think that is too extreme. Agree with others above there will be a bit of rotation but not anything like this number of non-prem / non senior players. Certainly wouldn't object to the likes of Hame Faiva getting game time, Butt, TDG, Griffin, McConnochie, van Velze (i.e. senior and experienced guys who haven't had many minutes this season.
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
Seems uncertainty over when any of the below will be fit or not for tigers:
Underhill
Barbeary
Bayliss ( sounds a few weeks away still)
Spencer
Rmc
Availability of those over the coming weeks will have e a big impact on selections this weekend. For example if spencer is out then really don't like the idea of no finn either. If underhill and barbeary out then may need to play reid even though I think he could probably do with a rest.

We lost at home to a second string Tigers, so a win away would seem unlikely. I wouldn't be that unhappy with full rotation away to Tigers to improve our chances of winning both the next 2 home games.
Having seen us lose prob 17 out of about 18 of my
trips to Welford Rd over the last 35 years I don't for a second underestimate the task but am buoyed by how close we came away to sale with 12 changes.
I do get that is safer to try and bank the 2 home wins - heaven forbid glos or racing upset the applecart though otherwise we have may have 'thrown' a game and acidentally lost 1 or 2!
I would make 5-10 changes to the 1st xv and rest 3- 4 completely.
I think they may make more like 10 changes and rest 5-6 " completely which becomes too big an ask to sneak a win.

Have you watched Tigers recently ? They have been absolutely abysmal. We took a second choice side to sale and did well I would expect that same side to beat tigers. No matter the squad we take I think a win is a must.
Not sure either competition should be favoured yet. We have the chance for rotation of players who need a rest whilst also having a shot of a win. To then set us up to qualify top of our group.
It’s hard to tell who needs it from here as we don’t know what the conditioning reports are and who is carrying a niggle that would benefit from a week off but it should be feasible to work out who could sit either one or two of the next three to get a break without overly weakening us for a Leicester trip that will still be tough even if they’re not in top form.
For example if Stewart starts I’d give him some reliable props either side and Ewels to run the line out so he has the best chance to succeed.

With JVG picking 2 fully loaded squads for Europe when in previous league games at least one big name was rotated. That is where my assessment of prioritising Europe came from.
I imagine that would be a topic raised at the initial stage of recruiting the likes of Russell and Du Toit.
That said, personally I agree that we could get something at Welford Road with say 5/6 changes

I think there’s more to ‘prioritising Europe’ than whether we can realistically win it or not. Learning to win in Europe requires us to get into a knockout game or two.

Not sure that prioritising Europe can be inferred from a strong side at Cardiff can it? More inclined to think he will go strong at home whatever the game to make the Rec a fortress. Early days!

JvG has said repeatedly that he 'loves' the Champions Cup. So he will go all out for a win v Racing, with Bruce's blessing. Not least because it will moreorless guarantee a sell-out home tie in the Round of 16 (and beyond?). That extra revenue is gold dust in a shortened domestic league. No brainer.
I would imagine as the tone on this thread suggests we will be much changed but we all hope competitive - however as you are only too aware of these blocks of games give no rest as we have a huge derby next weekend followed by Racing, Toulouse and oh yes another massive derby after that.
Hears hoping for a great game between arguably two of the greats in English rugby.

Tigers fan in peace. We were truly abysmal last week and only one or two players were above average. However before that we had won 5 on the bounce and we can only hope that last week was just a blip. Also our injury list seems longer every week but I am hopeful that being at home with a good crowd will get the players juices flowing. Safe journey to anyone travelling up.
Thanks a20.

Could really do with one of those backrowers being fit as ideally would give reid a rest.
We have hundreds of players taking the game to court over long term concussion injuries, yet we still see players failing HIA assessments, I wonder if the current obsession with size and physicality over skill is making the game unsustainable?

Whilst this is correct TB I think the point is that the tolerance for concussion injuries is considerably lower. Many impacts previously would have simply been ignored and the player exposed to second, third forth injuries without any kind of medical intervention.
The whole point of the HIA protocols is to make players and coaches aware of the dangers.
The point about squad size reduction is a very valid one mind.

I find it strange personally as think that 23 would have a great chance next week at home to glos but the mantra is clearly win your home games and maybe sneak a few away.
Won't be many better chances to have beaten tigers but you never know- if a second team beats them then hats off! Sure they will be very motivated to prove they are up to the task.
If we sneak a lbp and then beat glos and racing then job done I guess.
Considering we are resting /missing beno, dunn, stooke, ewels, hill, bayliss, alfie, underhill, spencer, russell, cam, lawrence, muir, coko that's still left us with a decent 23. Benefits of small injury list which the rotation has no doubt helped with.
Excited to see Harris at 15 but do find it frustrating they blood these guys (him, stewart, TCS, hennessey) in a second string away from home. Maybe long term it will serve them well.
Quote:tigerburnie
Tigers stronger than I expected, Tommy Reffell a huge boost to our back row, Cronin back a boost to the front row, Leibenburg and Cole get a much needed rest. Fancy a home win now
Refell a big bonus agreed.
You are right to be confident despite having some injury issues and resting a few.
If you lose at home to this bath team I would say that would be considered a serious low point.
Probably only 2-3 max of our first xv that would make a cup final xv (arguably stuart tho tdt would have something to say, maybe roux but stooke preferred by many, one of Gallagher or tdg at 15, not on the wing!). Easy to make an argument that's 100% second team.

Agree it is frustrating to not see them against Glos but then again they’ve arguably had their introductions with the big boys off the bench earlier in the season. Now it’s just go do it for 80 minutes. Whilst it looks initially very weak I still think it could end up being closer than some expect.
- Expect us to dominate scrum time especially off the bench
- Coetzee been immense and will give front foot ball
- Bailey who possibly has sorted kicking out and had weeks of Russell’s help
- Centre combination that started the season very well
- TDG and Gallagher will help out Harris at 15 and together can rotate
- TDT/Richards/Reid all give some experience and hopefully calm in the team.
For me the result in this game isn’t as important. It’s how this decision looks in a months time. Like it did with sale and we look back and see that we’ve been able to go at teams with little change and win all those games.

Agree CB 4 full backs in that squad and no respite from the bench. Thing is though that the club are in a great position and these guys have to be tested against the best, so I sort of get it, very much deep end stuff though.

Can only hope with Karl Dickson reffing that Cloete and McNally have learnt from their previous games and don’t give away a shed load of penalties. I admit to being slightly worried that it may be one rotation too far to be truly competitive and oddly it’s not the youngsters that worry me.
I will watch anyway with fingers firmly crossed.
I agree that it's not the youngsters that are the worry, and that we have rotated too many to get a result.
The proof of whether this has been a good strategy will be whether we make the top 2 or not at the end of the season and how far we get in Europe. We obviously need to rotate players, but I feel that we could do it in a different way and beat both Leicester and Gloucester.
It's a v exciting 23 in many ways, I just passionately hate losing to Leicester and felt they were there for the taking!!
Starting 8 is pretty strong considering there is 7 changes from the starting 8 last week - half backs as expected both wings are equally adaptive and have the speed for the wing and are both safe under the high ball but most importantly will provide Sam Harris with plenty of advice and support. The one thing which may work in our favour and should worry the Tigers team is the amount of pace and power in our backline - all of whom at one time or another have played on the wing and have huge amounts of pace - Lee Blackett I think see's enormous talent in Harris and he appears well ahead of Worboys in coaches thinking.
I am not too despondent with the 23 and will be travelling up to Welford Road confident in our ability to mix it and be competitive - the one person I am truly concerned about is the Official and that is for both sides.
I will be looking forward to a fully fit Jaco Coetzee against Wiese that will be tasty.

Sam Harris will not let the side down in any way, very good hands but defensively he is not only shrewd but fast as well. Pollard will kick to test him he may well get a shock when we run it back at him.
Interesting that Lee Blackett rates him highly, is that from background knowledge of just your opinion?

Sale look fully loaded away to saints.
We certainly seem to be the outlier in terms of naming second teams for away games but agree with ilovecider that oif it gets us top 2 in prem and knock outs of champions cup it's worked.
My worry is we end up 4th having 'thrown' a handful of away games and our reward is losing an away semi.
Saying that if we had a fully fit, fresh squad then we could beat anyone home or away.

We lost at home to a weaker lineup to what Tigers have selected this time. Probably weren’t going to win anyway so I like the idea of a major squad rotation, although I wouldn’t have had Cloete and McNally in the team after their recent disastrous performances.
However, both sides will have to suffer the worst ref around.

Important not to give away too many penalties as Pollard just doesn't miss, although we have a couple of penalty magnets in the team so that might not go too well.

It didnt go well last time at tigers in March (48-27) too many penalties (13) and down to 13 at one stage Josh McNally and Tom Dunn getting the wrong side of Mr Carley . I would hope for a losing bonus point but head says a similar score line …agree with rotation…..give others a chance !

All the pressure will be on tigers, let’s hope that some of our boys are chomping at the bit to put their best foot forward and show what they can do.

Nice to be able to proactively rotate!

Seems it's an 11 point spread so no LBP for us either 😕

Apologies for mentioning the round ball game but West Ham went away to Liverpool in the Carabou cup with a heavily rotated team & lost 5-1, though the odds were that they would loose anyway. However, they then beat Man U & Arsenal & are 6th in the table so worked well in my view!

Post team announcements, oddschecker have Tigers at 2/9 and Bath at 17/4 for the win. Game over then. I wonder what the points difference forecast is?
Seems it's an 11 point spread so no LBP for us either 😕
11 point spread seems fair and I personally think anything less than a 15 point defeat is a great effort from a second team away to leic.
Whilst I would have put about 3 stronger players in that 23 to make a LBP (aven sneaking a win) realistic there are various things I like about the selection on reflection.
Whole squad remains invested and engaged.
Jvg and staff are trusting the squad
We give ourselves a great chance of wins against glos and racing
Our best young players (stewart/ richards/ tcs/ hennessey/ harris) are getting some games
Rotation should mean if we get to the play offs the squad will be fresh (risk if we don't get there!)
Rotation will be under advice and guidance from the medical and S&C staff so hopefully help with injuries
Last season leic away was carnage for us- 4 injuries so not risking big players against an ultra physical team I get
Our pack is actually v v experienced and v v big so would like to think we won't get dominated
Maybe Harris will appreciate having 2 fullbacks supporting him with pollard pulling the strings for leic
Gutted as fully loaded I would be v confident of a rare Welford Rd win and shame we don't get to see some amazing match ups like beno vs heyes, ewels against 2 eng locks, alfie vs wiese (tho as excited by coetzee currently), finn vs pollard etc.

Charleboa, they were great times, I remember coming down and waking to see the rec under snow, by ko the snow had gone and parts were actually underwater. Seeing Jon Hall against Deano in identical brown soaked kits was amazing. I’m pretty sure the game only went ahead as it was on the tv
Proper rugby stopsy!
I started watching bath in 1984 so basked in glory for 15 years and it's been rather brutal ever since- I was rather spoilt.
I have probably been to Welford Rd about 15-20 times and seen us win once! Week after the rwc final in 03- what a week that was!!
Enjoy the game tomorrow- hope we haven't ruined it with our selection but think/hope that 23 can still be vaguely competitive, at least for spells of the game!
Would've also liked to see TCS starting at WR. Be a great test to see where he's at. I'm sorry but I just don't see what Schreuder offers...reminds me of Allinson/Youngs.
Still, a decent side. LBP would do me.
I would add 12 in there as well I.e. the drop off from spencer/ finn/ redpath to schreuder/ bailey/ butt is too big I think.
Actually quite like the rest of the team tho bit odd to rest both frontline hookers at the same time (assuming they are fit).
Would love to have seen finn play and give landy a go next week in a loaded starting xv. Poor bloke gets to play 2 seasons in a terrible team and does really well, then gets rewarded by only playing in second teams away from home.

That's true. I would think Gallagher must be due a rest week, so perhaps Redpath (played less rugby than Finn?) in at 12 with Butt on the wing might have been a better option...he's played there before if my memory serves me correctly ; )
Regardless, I think we've proved this season that whatever team we put out will be no pushover - even at WR.
Also i assume Sam Harris will be back up goal kicker?
12 points from our next 3 prem games (Tigers A, Glos H, Bris A) puts us top of the league/tied with saints before 6N I predict. Saints have got Exeter Away then Falcons at Home
Good chance we now go big for Toulouse away and hope to see a rotated side and top the group.
On a side note excited to see Brendan Owen could be a good pick up as I imagine very cheap and we’re in need of back 3 players even if he mainly plays 15

Yes I’m expecting Toulouse to rotate as they’ll have already qualified and will have a home semi. I expect us to beat Racing at home who are already out virtually. With games being spread out I think it would be a great test to see where we are

Comments from Quins game were that both Finn & Ben S were cautiously stretching when they came off which makes them a risk.
Also i assume Sam Harris will be back up goal kicker?
If that's come from the Club then fair enough - silly to risk either for one game.
Also after Saints away, we started Russell with Spencer on bench vs Sale, which suggests - even with a rotated team - JvG knows how vital it is to have at least one of those in the match day squad.
ps. Watching the Gloucester side maybe that game would be ideal for rotation. But then, another sell out crowd would be disappointed.
Back to my jigsaw puzzle.
Just arrived at Leicester drizzle and windy, perfect Tigers weather I fear our pack will have to stand up to them today.

The academy players will develop better with First XV players alongside them and as Francis said it’s disappointing for the supporters for both teams.
But what’s the solution?
More mixed rotation but disappoint your home fans?
Scrap the playoffs, making Away wins more important but harmful to Player Welfare?
Hope Tigers turn up today and the game is not spoilt by the referee.

19 year old Arthur Green on the bench.
Just what we needed..... sigh!
Go well Arthur!
Yes Stopsy, The Parcel Yard was a great place, became my favourite for post match chat with Leicester fans and right by the station. Always try and travel by train.
Thjen Dickson ignores 3 sets of hands in the ruck on their line by Tigers and lets then have the turnover.
And two tackles that targetted the knee early on.
Dickson just is incompetent.

Some very strange decisions.
Both ways, not really biased just making mistakes all over the place.

Even Healey suggesting the TDG tackle could have been a penalty try.
Then tigers hands in the ruck on their line missed.
Whilst refs don't often decide the result, he's certainly shifted the momentum in Tigers favour.

Very disappointing and don’t fully understand the idea of putting out a team that you know has little chance of winning!
Its not about winning every game though, it's tactical. It's about getting in the top 4 at the end of the season, preferably with home advantage. No point in doing that if your best players are crocked or injured.

One of the issues with Dickson is that his decisions directly influence the result. currently at least a 14 point, arguable a 21 point swing in Tigers favour due to his incompetence.
That said, I do not thing this Bath team has sufficient experience or power to win at Welford road. But boy is it frustrating when you see week after week after week Dickson getting things so wrong.
Tigers good for their lead but no way should they be that far ahead imagine JVG will be apoplectic with his performance. To be fair even Tigers fans are bewildered.

My how the poor was the officiating from Dickson, however where was the TMO is all this if the mistakes he made were as obvious as we all think they were. In the matches on TV over the weekend there was constant chats between officials on the pitch and when needed the TMO was involved. Honestly why was Dickson not alerted to the many wrong decisions. I am by no men defending him but the officials are supposed to work as a team of four. I can't work out if they are afraid to call Dickson out or whether he thinks he never makes an error so does not consult. Not saying it affected the result but they certainly made it difficult to understand and follow.
I am amazed he is allowed to ref international matches but I can only hope the TMO and TJs get more involved than they have today.
Also played right to the last.

21+ point swing in any game due to officating is going to destroy one side, but don't think we would have come out on top anyway.
The kids stood up well in the second half but need some added composure, which might have come with Spencer or Russell in the squad. However they will have learnt a lotfrom today.
But honestly. the why is dickson allowed anywhere near this level. We can't all be stupid in spotting his incompetence in almost every game he takes charge of, (or sits as TMO for). His errors aren't even marginal, they're massive, and impact results regularly (not just Bath games btw).
I do think he gets too much stick but when you put in a performance like that it feels at least a little justified. That said Tigers played well and Baths rotation team put in a decent performance too.
With eight games to go, three points separate the top six, with three of the other top five teams yet to come to The Rec. Of the four remaining away games, two (Bristol and Newcastle) are very winnable on current form, so nil desperandum everyone. Disappointing today undoubtedly, but hopefully seen through the ‘end of season’ lens, not a disaster.
Feel a bit for Bailey, in particular. He surely deserves a start in a fully-loaded XV.
Some standout performances from Coetzee and Ojomoh. Schreduer Bailey TDG all had very nice moments in the game. Very long season and great to see so many academy players doing so well. Onto the next one and looking forward to seeing everyone back.

Absolutely.
And sadly Dickson regularly puts in performances that are so far sub par so often if really beggars belief that he is anywhere near this league. His incompetence impacts results more than mistakes by players.
We didn't play well after the non-penalty try, and then forced it too much when Tigers were getting the subsequent decisions. Had we been 14-0 up and Tigers down to 14 for 10 minutes, who knows how the game may have panned out.
I would like to say that every ref makes mistakes and misses things - all you ask for in a ref is consistency even handed for both sides…mr Dickson just wasn’t.

Having this conversation re Manu Vunpola on our site. It's hard being no2 to "the King" as when you tend to get your chances it's in a 2nd or 3rd team and people often judge what the no1 choice would have done but don't often consider that they rarely have to play in the 2nds team. Also if you do get your shot in the fully-loaded XV then any mistakes (even if they're ones the no1 choice might have made) will be magnified.
I think JVG made a good call. Good experience for the wider team, no injuries (I think) and a decent result against a pretty fully loaded Tigers. In the mean time the main XV got a bit of a rest.

Interesting thought that OM - could a marquee player have a clause that stipulates a maximum number of appearances/ minutes per season/month? I can’t imagine that - but could be part of the player’s decision around the contract, their trust in the coach’s promise to not flog them to injury.

I can take defeat reasonably well now I am older but find it tough to take a bad refs performance and, for some reason, losing to a team with Mike Brown in it.
Totally agree with that, especially about Mike Brown……he could start a fight in an empty room !
He could.
Equally annoying is the Tigers’ habit of scrapping when scored against at the end of a match.
They will no doubt claim that Cloete started it, but to be fair, he was in a headlock when Richards went over and was neck rolled every time he attempted a jackal.

Not trying to start another fight but I thought Deglanville was going down before Stewart made contact. Certainly seen yellow cards for less.
Was hoping that our front 5 would impose themselves a bit more than they did today. McNally is becoming a real penalty magnet. Bailey should have switched up attack a bit, cross field kicks or small chips over the rushing defence wouldn’t have gone a miss. Didn’t feel as though we really started playing until the game was gone from us.
Good to see Richards get a go, and Hennessy. Both looked good off the bench.
Let's not kid ourselves, that could have got very ugly if tigers hadn't taken off most of their best players after 50 or so mins!
I understand the selection strategy, i understand you can only really judge it at the end of the season but so far we have basically 'thrown' 3 winnable away games and are 4th. How will we approach bris away, exeter away etc...
Fair play to leic , they were ultra physical- I thought even our second string would stand up better than that. Credit to leic for that.
Positives:
Don't think we got any injuries?
Completely fresh team next week if we want
First prem try for hennessey and well done for not letting the mighty Mike brown bully you at the end
Mojo a real mixed bag but some nice moments
Richards excellent off the bench- love that guy, give him more game time
Well done John Stewart for hitting your man at several lineouts.
Harris was brave and quick- will be a class act
Tdg is a player I love watching and thought he was a real threat today
Good spirit to literally fight til the end and get a few consolation tries

I know Bath were nowhere near full strength but bear in mind Tigers were without Cole, Liebenberg, JVP, Youngs, Hassell-Collins, Bassett, Claire, Henderson, Porter, Dolly from our 23.
Congrats on the win. Thought your guys really laid down a marker on the physicality- we never fired a shot or got any kind of foothold in the game. Completely outmuscled, was impressive as thought our pack would stand up to you better than that.
I think your win at the rec was more impressive- little bit like shooting fish in a barrell today sadly. Can only beat what is in front of you and can only thank you for subbing off your best players after 50 to allow the scoreline to flatter us!

Feel a bit for Bailey, in particular. He surely deserves a start in a fully-loaded XV.
Fascinated to see if he signs a new contract.
Personally feel our management of him has been appalling.
Throw him in at 19 to see if he sinks or swims.
Totally screw up his kicking with a new coach.
He otherwise swims and outperforms many of his seniors so we sign a marquee 10- I have no issue with that, finn is class and improves us hugely, no brainer.
Only play him in a second team in away games, or give him 2 mins when finn is tired.
Sub him off today.
I know others will totally disagree but I think he has been treated really shabbily.
Hopefully he is mature enough to realise he is still only 22 and learning off finn at bath is a good place to be.... but only if he gets a fair crack of the whip sometimes.

Where exactly is he going to go to be a starter? If he’s sensible he’ll be learning everything he can off Finn and working hard to improve.
Glos or bris may be a decent fit tbf....or exeter.
I hope he stays and learns off one of the best but I think we have treated him shabbily looking from the outside in. Put it this way I wouldn't blame him if he wanted a fresh start.
Harris is class but would ideally want him to stay as third choice 15 / third choice 10 for another season as long as he was getting some game time.

Struggle to understand the surprise at Dicksons performance. He is always poor, too interested in being the centre of attention. Utterly incompetent fool. He makes Carley look good.
On a positive, I thought Harris was good, TDG looked hungry and Richards looked powerful.
My MOTM - Sam Harris. Looked like he belonged. Shame most of his team mates didn't.
And a word for the ref. Dickson likes to let the game flow and to make quick decisions to keep things moving even if they are not strictly according to the Laws. He makes mistakes and they mostly even out. Mostly...
... IMHO, of course.

McNally has dropped off badly, GJVV fell foul of the ref (ball deviated to riches in flight)
TdT and Richards mad a difference but by then we just had a collectin of back players who were all strangers.
Big lesson JvG will have learned is he needs to sort out the lock situation and Harris is way older than he actually is. He is ridiculously fast and could play anywhere.
Really hope Bailey stays but I think his development has stalled, reminiscent of Adam Hastings but he turned out OK.
JvG is ruthless with the youngsters but he won’t turn his back on them. He may have been subbed but he actually had a decent game. He just has to stick it out. I think he can do that.
Problem might be that Harris overtakes him!

This for me. Felt like I was watching a Bath team from the start of last season before we acquired Annett, Lawrence, Hill and now Finn for this one. The bookies had it right and I wasn't expecting any other outcome. I hope the rotation plan works and we beat Glaws/R92 at home before we probably send another "shadow" team to Toulouse.

Just watched the game. Pretty disappointed with that display to be honest. A second late in thought and deed in the forwards and no apparent desire to ability to play any actual rugby in the backs. You'd hope that it was just one of those days because, if we are *that* dependent on Finn Russell, then we have a problem. Losing at Welford Road is no disgrace but losing without even firing a shot is unforgivable. And strongly reminiscent of the not-too-recent past.
Yes, that match did take the gloss off where we are currently. I had hoped that the transformation that we have seen in the first team would have rubbed off on the whole squad. It seems we have quite a problem with strength in depth, or lack of it. We will need many of these players during the 6 Nations & whilst we are in the top 4 we have others breathing down our necks. Hopefully we”(( have enough to get into the top 4 but top 2 - I think not.

Im glad JvG did what he did and I'd be more than happy for him to do it again. We've heard we have one of the biggest squads in the Prem, so we need to test the fringe players so we know who to keep.
Top 4 is the goal, but 2nd place is fine for me

Integrate 4 or 5 of any of those players into the side that beat Quins and I don't think there would be an issue, the 9-10 axis excepted. Do agree that Bailey needs to be given more game time for that reason amongst others.Bath HammerQuote:Yes, that match did take the gloss off where we are currently. The one element of selection that confused me was if you are effectively throwing a game why risk crucial players in stuart and tdt!? Thank god they came through fine.
I said a defeat by less than 20 would be a good achievement with that 23. The negative of that is that if leic had kept their best players on after 50 mins and kept their foot to the peddle it realistically would have been more than 20. On the positive the young guys plus tdt did well off the bench. Was really proud of their efforts to get the scoreboard respectable.
We chose to have basically 2 or 3 frontline players in a 23.
Our depth I think is perfectly fine- that was just way too big a challenge that jvg set that group. I think its the first time they have misjudged a selection. As I say why risk some premier players in a 23 that had next to no chance of getting anything from the game. Always looked a muddled selection to me.
We have bris, exeter, quins, Newcastle away still- v interested to see what we do there. You can't keep naming heavily rotated teams in an 18 game season and expect to get top 2. We are close though, only 1 point off, so going v well so far, the fact we are talking about top 2 as realistic is a delightful position! I do think we will need to win at least of those away games though which feels v achievable tbh.

If so it's a wake up call for everyone.
Sorry but to suddenly state yesterdays performance was reminiscent of a return to recent failing is just not considering the bigger picture.
These young players have been exposed to a premiership battle, some have come out well others have work to do but it has to be remembered that our best players will fresh and vital for the next home match.
It's unrealistic to think we can win every game, all we need is to have our best team fit and qualified for the end of season finals.

Leicester’s forwards were very good and were fired up after their loss last week, and won the physical battle.
One thing I did notice was that we challenged virtually every Leicester Lineout. Presumably part of the game plan but left us vulnerable to the maul.
I really hope that we come back firing for the next few games and fingers crossed Miles Read is ok, he’s so important to us with Hill out.
Dickson well it’s been covered just not good at all, surely his reviews make poor reading….

As I know the score I have no intention of watching the game. What the result does suggest to me is our squad players aren’t as good as we’d like and the drop off in certain positions is huge, 9&10 for example.
I don't get that, how can you comment on the quality of squad players if you don't watch them play.
Did you do the same for the Fulham v Arsenal game knowing the result?

Don’t get me started on Arsenal recent results prove they are hopeless, starting with the substandard goalkeeper.
As for Bath surely if the squad players were at the level we’d like they might have beaten a depleted Tigers? Remember how Saracens used to be? It didn’t matter who they put out there would be a good performance.
Don’t get me wrong, I am delighted at the progress Bath have made under JvG, but we aren’t strong enough across the whole squad yet.

Assume you are referring to someone else in terms of saying its reminiscent of a return to recent failings- have seen a few saying that but I don't agree personally.
I don't think that's the case, I simply think if you name a 23 made up of 2nd and third choice players away to leic you will lose badly.
I certainly see value in playing the young guys who did brilliantly. I have always said with 2 or 3 more frontline players in that 23 I felt we had a chance of a LBP and/or a 4 try BP. Felt like we gave ourselves zero chance of anything.
We could have put stewart, richards, TCS, harris , hennessey into a really loaded 23 next week and beat glos imho.
As you say we won't win every game but I think at minimum you should select a squad with a chance of getting 1 or 2 pts from a game. The only silver lining for me was the guts shown from some young lads which I agree will stand us and them in good stead.

Players still might be unavailable for some fixtures due to being called into camp and the mandated rest after ofc.
For me that's ensuring the likes of richards, harris, tdg get another go in the next 4 weeks. Maybe Stewart and hennessey but they are further behind in their development I think.
Harris at fb with tdg on the wing is a combo that excites me!
Any news on miles reid? Fingers crossed
The commentators certainly mentioned illness (perhaps the reason for Reid's late withdrawal?) and we know that Sam Underhill had been absent with a leg injury for two weeks. Barbeary looked in pain when he left the field v Quins. Possibly some other forwards were carrying knocks and JvG did not wish to risk them?
Spencer also had an issue - cramp or hamstring?

I don’t think we can have it both ways on this game - saying that we don’t have enough strength in depth whilst calling that our 2nd/3rd team. If that was genuinely a 2nd team, then it absolutely did prove that we’ve got good strength in depth. The great thing is that our ‘1st’ team is setting a way higher bar this year.
Conversely our first team was beaten at home by their almost 2nd team!

Think it was Lee Blackett that said pre match it had always been the intention from the beginning of the season to rotate heavily for yesterday’s match.
Jvg has said similar in recent interviews- have a top level plan for the season but willing to tweak it as they go along.
That's where my slight gripe is- assumption at start of season was prob that leic would be going well and it would be v low percentage game to target.
In reality they were 8th, quite a few injuries, a few rested...gave us a decent chance Iof something i think.
Glos looked a bit of a shambles to me on Saturday and are in poor form with lots of players missing. I think we should have been aiming and giving ourselves a chance of 6 points from the 2 games.
Pgt- it's a really good and fair point. I endlessly speculate with no inside knowledge these days and in the absence of an update for a few weeks from the club I have no idea who is injured and/ or ill. Certainly feels in the backrow we prob had v few options. Fingers crossed miles just had a dicky belly or a mild case of man flu and comes back fresh next week.

Arsenal are a very good side, make no mistake. However, for Arteta to say that they deserved to beat West Ham or Fulham is rubbish. Pretty football but currently they are ineffective in front of goal & changing goalkeepers seems a mistake, just like Man U, and does Arteta have to be so morose.

And a Happy New Tear to you CB, yes it was just a general response as you say and not directed in your direction re past performances.
You are right when you say we should be collected the bonus points of course but looking at how JvG managed the game I got the feeling that he was throwing talented ore into the crucible to see what pure gold remained.
As you say it was a huge rotation, line out was always going to struggle with a new hooker and it exposed our need for a couple of young big locks.
As I mentioned elsewhere JvG won't abandon Bailey but he won't get selected if he isn't good enough. I don't think Landy being subbed was a chiding either, he has done that with Richards recently and yesterday Richards came on and didn't only hold his ground but excelled.
If these squad limits are to occur (hope not) we need to lose 20 senior squad members and half the academy. I also think that yesterdays game wasn't just a trial for the second string but a test for some senior players.
JvG wants all players to be fighting for their places, including Stuart, McNally and Cloete.
A sort of sacrificial game. There were some nuggets that emerged I feel Mojo and Harris looked solid though when Mojo breaks he always seems to want to throw huge passes on his second half break Harris was supporting fast.
I completely agree we could do with a couple of huge locks like Martin and Chessum. There needs to be a bit more than just potential.
Hennessy scoring was a bonus but does he use his physical attributes enough? Our backs tackle but should be knocking the opposition back a bit more. TdG is in the same category IMV.
Back up 9 is an issue.
I don't think we will see that excess of rotation again.

Nail on head!

This has been a hell of a block of games week to week so I do understand the approach even if I don't think we quite got it 100% right.
Richards was good wasn't he and harris is to the Manor born- just don't know his best position. He played 12 mainly for the bath 18s I think.
Hennessey is only 19 ? He has a good frame to add bulk to and become a real handful.
When players are getting games at 19/20 you know the club seriously rate them.
Arthur Green is an interesting one- assume he was just a travelling reserve as opposed to next cab off the rank in terms of pecking order?

I really enjoyed tdg on the wing- he has the pace Gallagher lacks. Gallagher stronger in other facets of his game.

For my money TdG better in attack than defence, (out of position for Brown's try) Gallagher better in defence than attack.

- Scrum was decent harsh on a few calls and largely seemed to have a slight edge, TDT made a good impact
- Lineout seemed to be an issue, not a good start from Faiva but probably still learning calls
- Coetzee was once again very good made constant metres and if it wasn’t for his wrongly judged collapse would have probably been our best player. Starts for me at 7 if no Underhill
- Schreuder intercept was lovely however still feel we lack the speed and directness comparatively at 9
- Ojomoh is some player lovely assist for Hennessy and beautiful pass to Gallagher which should have been taken. Starts at 12 for me against Glos
- Makeshift back 3 worked well big game for TDG for me showed why you fit him in. Might see some more of him there and surely another reason to extend his deal
- Youngesters off the bench all provided impact to create a second half we actually were the better side in
Overall more points deserved but I truly think that was a good outcome for the squad.
All your comments align to my thoughts and given I thought we would get thrashed and thanks to leic bench changes plus the effort and heart from our bench then good reasons for some positivity.
I would also love to see mojo rewarded with more starts in the next 4 games and tdg to get more goes on the wing during that period ( and sign a new contract). Would be v excited to see a backrow including coetzee and alfie from the start- he has played on the flank loads and deserves. It.
Although happy with the win it’s a shame that both teams weren’t at full strength to gauge where we both are. Hopefully we both make top 4 but a lot depends on injuries and the international circus.
Must say through gritted teeth I’m pleased that Bath are much improved as I love seeing the old rivalry revitalised. Good luck for the rest of the season apart from if we meet in the play offs.

Tbf have said that multiple times in this thread including literally in the one above your post A20.
Agree , we got destroyed on the gainline hence never got a foothold in the game- literally didn't fire a shot.
I know you were missing c10+ of your squad to injury/ rest but I really don't think it compares to the bath selection- that's our decision and one I really disagreed with as it set us up to have no chance of even a LBP. All you could do was take us to the cleaners which you duly did- agree it could have got ugly without your changes.
Whilst I hate losing to leic I am well versed in it over the years and its not even through gritted teeth that I like to see leic and bath doing well. It's what I grew up on and feels right!
I think you have the squad and depth to make top 4- as you say injuries will come into it. If you keep the likes of montoya, Martin, chessum, wiese, pollard fit I don't think you will be far away.
I fancy baths chances of top 4 but only if we try to win some away games (appreciate we have bagged a few already )

Montoya, cole, martin, chessum, reffell, wiese, pollard, steward...
It's hard to argue we have many/any regular international starters- absolutely loads on the fringes of international squads but I would only say finn as a nailed on starter for a tier 1 national team.

Could argue we would have done the same if the game was really winnable.
Wouldn’t take off our starting 10 and have our 5th choice option take the reign at 60 minutes
Wouldn’t take of a technical international at hooker aswell
Stuart subbed at 65 when he can easily play 80s
We got close but Glaws got them at Quins from a similar position.
... IMHO, of course.

I'm afraid I'm not au fait enough with Leicester's squad to judge it's relative strength, but given it featured Argentina's test captain, two of England's locks, arguably the best player in the league this season and actual Handre Pollard, let's chalk this off to men Vs boys
