A BRISTOL (BEAR) BAITING - AN ASHTON GATE CHALLENGE
Robbo
By Bath Supporter Jack
February 11 2025
The final game in the league block of games for the Premiership Cup. In the reverse fixture in November at the Rec, Bath stormed to a 78 – 19 win possibly because Bristol had played an Australian XV the evening before using up their senior squad. It is very unlikely that the result will be anything like this at Ashton Gate on Saturday!
Bath go into this game having secured five wins out of five and including four try bonuses. The sub league has Bath clear with 24points and cannot be caught with Bristol in second place on 15 points. It is an interesting point of reference that Bath beat Bedford home and away and Bristol lost away in the latest match.
After five games the other league leaders are Newcastle, Northampton, Harlequins and Exeter. The five sub league leaders and three best runners up go through to the last eight. Number one plays number eight, two plays number seven, and so on. So, it is ideal to be in the top 4 and then of course as high up the table as possible.
Given that some teams might “load” their quarter final teams with senior players it is impossible to say at this stage who one would want to be up against. It looks like Exeter and Newcastle have been picking stronger teams on paper but of course this could all change.
Watching the game against Ampthill on Saturday I was aware that by the time we brought our bench into play we were a very young team which could accurately be described as a Third Team, and certainly very much a “Development Squad”. Which of course is one of the stated objectives of this tournament.
The big question and discussed on ‘ere after almost every game is do we stick with the current squad of players or do we draft in senior squad players to strengthen the team to try and enhance our chances of winning a cup. Personally, I think it is critical that we give opportunities to our talented, young squad players who do not get as much game time as they should. It is only by exposure in this manner that they will develop into better players in the future. I absolutely understand bringing back senior players who are recovering from injury as we did at the weekend with Cam Redpath.
So, the Bath team I would pick would be the best players from the first five games and might look something like;
1 Cordwell
2 Spandler
3 Verdon
4 Cuckson
5 Richards
6 Bennett
7 Staddon
8 Green
9 Carr Smith
10 Bailey
11 Hennessy
12 Butt
13 Redpath
14 Emens
15 Donoghue

I hope we stick with the boys who have got us this far in the KO stage. They got us there and deserve the chance to go all the way.
However, I suspect JvG will want to knock some rust off for the senior players before the Prem restarts

Daft not to use it to get game time for the likes of redpath last weekend though.
Tough to think there'll be too much rotation. Maybe Moloney into the row to qualify him? Maybe Annett? Coka at a push? Don't see us using Dunn, Beno, TdT, Ewels or Reid. Muir, Pepper feels like it's probably a week or two too soon...
As those 4 U20 lads will be available this weekend, maybe one or two may be in the frame?
Agree with hasta that it may be too soon, but if Pepper is ready he could get a go -all, IMO, still in the spirit of the competition.
PG
Yes we might well see some of them this weekend
It is amazing how much depth we have.......can't help but think we can't retain, or indeed want to retain, so many players.
Yes Exeter will continue to play their first team with the aim of trying to get momentum into their (ruined) season rather than trying to give more of their young lads game time. Each to their own, they have always put out strong teams in this comp. Whilst it being a development is just a 'spirit' rather than a rule I guess it will continue to happen.

Unsure if the England U20s players will be available this weekend as not Championship match and also for semi final & final weeks.
Prop: Arthur Cordwell, Kieran Verdan, Vilikesa Sela, Mikey Summerfield, Archie Stanley, Stott Kirk, Archie Griffin
Hooker: Kepu Tuipulotu, Jasper Spandler, John Stewart
Lock: Will Jeanes, Ewan Richards, Mackenzie Graham, Harvey Cuckson, Jack Bennett (also back row)
Backrow: Ethan Staddon, Arthur Green, Tom Cowan, Alfie Barbeary, Jaco Coetzee
Scrum half: Tom Carr-Smith, Neil Le Roux, Ieuan Davies
Fly half: Orland Bailey
Centres: Louie Hennessey, Will Butt, Cameron Redpath, Max Ojomoh, Will Parry, James Short
Wing/full back; Ruaridh McConnochie, Austin Emens, Charlie Griffin, Ciaran Donoghue, Tyler Offiah, Jack Woods

If they could Bath would 100% keep playing the same side with those U20s but I’m not sure they’ll be able to with Bristol’s expected side.
We put a massive score on them previously. But that was our academy vs Bears academy so should have been fairly even. They will want to reverse that.
Expecting all the U20s boys to be involved with Griffin/Sela/Tuipolotu starting. Massive test and the kind of games that separate which talents will/have made the step up.

Seems like Bristol will be going strong for this game. Expecting to almost see a full strength side. Which makes things very difficult selection wise.

Bristol put out a fairly strong team last weekend and still lost to Bedford.

IIRC, Bristol had a game against Australia A that weekend, meaning their team vs us was even weaker than normal.
Hopefully the young lads put on a great show again. Be great to see how some of our U20s stars go against seasoned pros.

Might be over optimistic to expect a win against such a strong Briz side especially with weather looking so favourable to their brand of rugby but would expect to get a TBP at least to ensure home QF

No, the top ranked team always gets home advantage. If we go through as 3rd ranked team (as we are currently) but the 1st and 2nd rank teams lose their QFs then we would become the top ranked team and have home fixtures all the way through.
I am glad we have beno/dunn/ tdt/ roux/ ewels/tdg etc wrapped in cotton wool.
Really like our squad- two third of starting xv have played in prem/ champions cup this season and so have three quarters of bench.
Some bang off the bench with van wyk/ annett/ malony/ reid/ coetzee.
Hopefully enough to competitive and get 1 match point.
If we get with 2-3 scores of them I think that's a positive result for us.
So can only players who have got match time in group stages play in knock outs?

So can only players who have got match time in group stages play in knock outs?
Partially for to improve chances of winning silverware (though I prefer the game time for young and fringe players); but also to use as a mini--pre-season ahead of the Prem restart.
We do have an 11 point lead on the away-semi-final places; but that can evaporate quickly if we have gathered a bit of rust over the 7-week break.
In JvG we trust - and I suspect the difference may come down to what we've been doing in training during this break - it's a real opportunity to evolve the gameplan as well as resting niggles and boosting strength/fitness levels (both of which would be reduced by playing matches)
RAEBURN SHIELD
Gives certain players the chance of a mini pre season and / or some proper rest.
Means we don't name a completely rusty squad for prem return. Will prob be a combo of battled hardened internationals, well rested players and some who have just played a few games during 6 nations period.
Gives us half a chance in the prem Cup still- I would love to win the whole thing but defo an uphill challenge with some clubs approach.
In jvg we trust as you say- being relatively fresh in may/June could be vital.
Still shows the respect Ewan and the boys have earnt good luck today guys - give them hell.

Quins ahead against Salaries.
Quins win and we're away in the QFs.
Salaries win and we're 4th placed and home, I think.
Top 3 will be Newcastle, Saints and Exe in some order.
Glos and Ealing will have away QFs.
A Sale win tomorrow would mean Leicester or Bristol are out. I'm not sure which pf the latter two has better points difference though. I suspect Tigets given the beating Bristol 3rds took at The Rec in November.

Bristol out already then. Tigers currently 8th seed but Sale could dislodge them (and even overtake Ealing in 6th and Glos in 7th)
Might help explain Lam picking his best team - big victory margin needed to qualify, and also the last chance for a run put pre-Prem starting up if they did get knocked out.

Well it backfired big time so Bristol can believe they played our first team and beat them whilst we play Quins in a quarter final.
Pat Lam trying to make it all about beating Bath because his 1st team failed to score enough points to qualify.
I am not too disappointed by the result - 1st half we more than matched them - second half their power told.
End result of the pool stage our squad played better - I was so pleased that Andy Robinson and JvG stayed true to their values and the squad players.

I haven’t yet seen the game but why did we implode? We scored no points in the 2nd haft after being in the lead. True, we lost Bailey, which could be very damaging, but we had a decent number of 1st teamers in our lineup & Bristol weren’t playing all regular 1st teamers. What went wrong. Some talented players pushing for advancement will be pretty disappointed I guess.
I haven't seen it either but followed on Bath Chronicle's live blog. Sounds like we had our chances but couldn't execute. A scrum penalty in the Bris 22 from a strong attacking position and Donoghue kicking it dead when going to the corner sounded particularly frustrating. Credit to Bristol for being more clinical.

I didn't go to the game, it would be interesting to read a Bath supporter who did go, what their views of the match were. Good attendance, over 17K, guess Bristol fans turned up in numbers to support their strong team hoping to get one over the old enemy. Well they got their wish in the second half 19-0 but credit to Bath for the first half performance. Listening to Chilcotts comments on Radio Bristol our second half performance was error strewn and that ultimately was our downfall and a big disappointment for supporters and players. Still' it's been a successful campaign and we have a home quarter final against Quins. Glad it's not at their place, did everyone notice the awful condition of their pitch, it's not looked good all season.
It’s interesting to note that is was the more experienced pack that struggled, not the youngsters in the first half. These error strewn periods of play continue to plague us from time to time, such as at Leinster.

My Bad - the rules have been changed from last year! You don’t have to have played in the Group Stages to play in the QF.
For the SF & Final you must have played during Pool stage or in the QF!
With the QFs being played on a 6Ns rest weekend selection will be interesting!
As you say selection for QF now v v interesting.
I still hope they stick with the likes of richards/ staddon/ tcs/ hennesey at least.
Depending on Richards knock and Quins strength may also look to bring Roux into squad. Potentially could bring Dunn in but depends if Kepu is available. Unsure from stands at weekend whether in first half it was Stewarts throwing or the lineout jumpers etc who weren't working.
[rfu.widen.net]
What was the nature of Baileys injury? He does recover remarkably well but I've no idea of the incident, ditto Richards.
The Stewart conundrum continues to baffle!

To my mind the current status is:
Fly Half
1. Russell (failed recent HIA)
2. Bailey (injured, severity tbc)
3. Harris (out for the season)
4. Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh (All untested at prem level)

6. Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh (All untested at prem level)

4. McConnochie/Bailey (injured, severity tbc)
5. Emens/Donoghue (both untested at prem level)
6. Emens/Donoghue (both untested at prem level)
We have to be prioritising the league above the cup, and if anything were to happen to our frontline players it could seriously derail our season.
If Bailey recovers in time for the QF, I'd still be reticent to start him, as I think he's currently the ideal player to fill the 23 shirt for the league games, and reduces the pressure on Russell. I'd probably opt for Donoghue to start.
If Bailey is out for a while, all of a sudden Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh will be our back up 10, which feels like a precarious position, so I'd want at least one of them excluded from the cup. This would also mean McConnochie is directly backing up TdG, so can't really afford for him to go down either.
Basically I can still see us being competitive in the league with our 2nd choice FH + 3rd choice FB, but if that changes to 4th choice FH + 5th choice FB we'll struggle.

Agree certainly not ideal losing Bailey, with what seems a Hamstring injury.
I would say however that TDG is almost certainly the 3rd or 4th Choice option at 10. Very comfortable there, played through age grade + U20s and more importantly plays as a distributor within our system already.
If we were to go into Round 1 without Russell or Bailey I’d be pretty confident if the backline looked
9. Spencer
10. TDG
11. Butt
12. Cam
13. Ojomoh
14. Cokanasiga
15. Muir
That could be altered in a lot of ways and still be at a good level. Having 3 distributors with TDG Cam and Max would take pressure off the 10.
But likewise what was done with Worboys, often keeping everyone else in their best position and slotting Donoghue at 10 would allow the team to help Donoghue.
Having said all this quite a while to go so hoping that none of that is an issue.

I'd also suggest that if it looks like Bailey is out for a while, then:
A] if Ojomoh/Redpath/DeGlanville are our next-best FHs, I'd want them playing the rest of the PRC there, to get some updated game-time in the position, rather than wrapping them in cotton wool.
B] We'd be talking an injury expecting at least 5 weeks out for Landi to affect even 1 Prem match - can someone remind me how long the prognosis before the injury dispensation kicks in?
C] We've lost 2 players mid-season, and not gained any, we may well have cap space to recruit a loan FH without needing the injury dispensation (others' fans may not like it but...)

If bailey is out long term I would be looking to sign a specialist 10 using injury cover but that isn't an easy ask.
If not redpath at 10 with mojo in the centres somewhere- not ideal but not a total disaster.
Tdg didn't look much of a 10 to me even at u20s so not convinced he is the answer several years on having not played there since.
Weston is v v green- think he got a bad injury and has barely played over the last year?
Not sure what the pecking order is but harris was named as a 10 at start of season. Obviously out all season but would he have been next cab off the rank?

This is starting to highlight our squad composition and how we're asking several players to cover 10 and 15.
To my mind the current status is:
Fly Half
1. Russell (failed recent HIA)
2. Bailey (injured, severity tbc)
3. Harris (out for the season)
4. Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh (All untested at prem level)
5. Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh (All untested at prem level)
6. Donoghue/Redpath/Ojomoh (All untested at prem level)
Fullback
1. TdG
2. Harris (out for the season)
3. McConnochie/Bailey (injured, severity tbc)
Hadn't really considered TdG as an option at 10, but again that's further proof that we're relying on our full backs to also cover fly half, and if TdG were to play there, we'd be looking really threadbare at 15 (not sure Muir has ever played there).
If we're considering players even further down the pecking order like Weston, I think we'd probably be better off getting a player in on loan, I just think the step up would be too much.
Perhaps moving Ojomoh/Redpath to 10 would be the least disruptive option, it's better to pick someone from a well stocked position than robbing Peter to pay Paul by pinching one of our few fullbacks. We'd still have Lawrence, Butt and Hennessy to pick in the centres, and they'd at least have some pre-existing chemistry with the rest of the backline.

The big bonus in the potential conundrum at 10 is that spencer is a very capable goalkicker.
When we all thought Spencer couldn't become any more indispensable...
Given the form of TCS of late, I wonder whether the coaches might consider "doing a Dupont" and moving Spencer along the backline if we're without our 1st/2nd/3rd choice fly halves...

Definitely think it's an option they would consider.
Would be a bit down my list of options as just feels like you are messing around with a strength to solve a diff problem.

I think Spencer may have played 10 a couple of times as replacement/reshuffle towards the back end of games before our resurgence, and I don't recall it going particularly well?
I think you have answered your own question there...would anyone have looked decent at 10 in the Hooper era Bath team? I suspect that playing behind the 24/25 Bath pack would be a bit easier.

Away at Chiefs in Europe round of 16 last year when Finn & Cam hobbled off with 6-2 bench. OB replaced Finn at 10 & we were leading until Cam went off. LS came on at 9 with BS moving to 10 & OB to 12. Went downhill very rapidly from there & could never understand why LS couldn’t have been slotted in elsewhere with less disruption.

I'd still prefer him not to be risked in the QF, give Donoghue a chance to play behind a strong pack, we may find out that we've got another very serviceable fly half option in the wider squad.
Error strewn for sure but it was raining the whole match so the ball would have been slick.
Two of our 3 tries in the first 30 were from their mistakes.
It seems like when teams play Bristol, they get suckered into playing the same way: Run it from anywhere, no look passes etc. Whereas I think the conditions called for a conservative low risk game. Play for territory. Defend aggressively, Let them make the mistakes.
That said, Bristol were the better team and deserved to win.

Looping in the update from the England A thread, sounds like Bailey's substitution was mostly precautionary

Remember in the Bedford game away he had a similar injury and played the following week, either precautionary or he is a fast healer.

That was how - with stifling defence, Sale nilled them at home before Christmas.
One to remember for our next encounter.

And how did the replacement get on for rest of the match?

Who went to 10 last week when OB went off?

Ciaran Donoghue is going to play 10, Louie Hennessey moves to the wing and Ruaridh McConnochie goes to full back.
