“IT’S THE EYE OF THE TIGER….” EXETER v BATH PRC
Green: gets better
By Devonport Lad
February 17 2026
The lyrics of that well known song by Survivor have it that “It’s the thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of our rivals.” Once again, Chiefs are proving themselves to be big beasts in the PRC and we’ll need to rise to the challenge. Exeter’s 48-14 win over Gloucester put them in pole position to qualify for a home semi-final from Pool A whilst our 5 points against a strong Bristol side put us firmly into the mix for a top two spot.
It’s all very much in our hands, but Gloucester are not out of the running yet and I think we’d all prefer not to have to beat them with maximum points at the Rec on the 28th of February. So, as the “last known survivors” from last year’s competition meet again on Saturday, there’s a lot at stake.
There was a lot to be happy about from our performance against Bristol. It didn’t quite click in the first half; at times it looked as if we were trying too hard which resulted in some inaccuracies that deprived us of scoring opportunities and allowed Bristol some. Towards the end of the first half many of us could have been forgiven for wondering if it was going to slip away from us. Harry Randall was moving the Bristol team around the pitch with his usual speed, Messrs Lane, Ibitoye and Worsley were strong and Joe Jenkins looked threatening every time he got the ball. 14-17 At half time could have been a whole lot worse!
But as I suggested in my preview for that game, there is a steely psychological edge to Bath Squads at every level these days and they made it count in the second half. The forwards were, as usual, immense. It’s good to see Ewan Richards back in business and young Arthur Green just keeps getting better. Following what looked like a nasty injury to Tom Cowan, George Timmins played more minutes than he might have expected and delivered a key score. The front row gave us a stable scrum platform and I was particularly impressed with the way that young Scott Kirk stood up to much more experienced opposition.
But it wasn’t just about the forwards. Will Roue brought his exceptional goal kicking form from BUCS to the PRC and promising young wing Charlie Griffin scored twice, the second try, scored in the 59th minute was a length of the pitch candidate for try of the season, involving a number of players including Max Ojomoh. It was great to see Max, even if we’d rather have seen him at Murrayfield!
Down at Sandy Park, Exeter were level with Gloucester at half time but scored 34 unanswered points in the second half to win comfortably. By all accounts, Exeter were very good in the second half but Gloucester just weren’t able to lift their intensity to compete – exactly the opposite of Bath’s second half performance at the Rec. The boys dug deep on Saturday and are going to have to do it again, and probably a bit more, against what will certainly be a strong Exeter team, who no doubt will be fielding several familiar names.
So how do we approach this? I’m not going to reopen the debate about selection for the PRC squads. In my view we should take a huge amount of pride from the depth of talent that the Bath Academy and the wider Pathway is producing and I fully expect Mark Lilley to stick with the core of the young players who have got us to this position. That said, Sandy Park can be a very difficult place to go and secure a win. It was good to see several of our senior players on the pitch after the win against Bristol and I wouldn’t be surprised if, whilst sticking to the spirit of the competition, we field a few more experienced heads, both to try to secure the win and importantly to ensure that we qualify as many players as possible for hopefully, a semi-final and final.
It’s difficult to predict what the conditions will be like on Saturday. The forecast suggests drizzle and a moderate breeze, but Sandy Park is subject to it’s own microclimate and it’s just as likely to be throwing it down, with a howling gale coming off Dartmoor. Whatever the weather, our boys will need to draw on all their skills and steely resolve to contain the threats from the high scoring Chiefs backs and to impose their own game. To go back to “The Eye of the Tiger,” theme, last year we “had the guts, got the glory”. There’s no reason why we can’t do it again.

Agreed, it will be tough to win at Sandy Park. Chiefs are stronger this season and likely to select a few front runners. That said, our skipper Will Butt will be out to impress, we may well add a "ringer" or two of our own with eyes on the KO stages and, of course we won the final there last year.
That last point is double edged of course. Exeter will be out to erase the memory of that defeat.
This could be a tense match up.

It'll be interesting to see whether we mirror Exeter's strategy of having mostly front line players involved, there's obviously the consideration for making some of our big guns available for the knock out stage (if we get there).
If we go full bore to try and get the 4/5 points, we'd be on 25/26 points, Chiefs probably on 24/25 points and Gloucester on 24 points (they're bound to thrash the already eliminated Sale at home this week). That would leave Exeter facing elimination and our game hosting Gloucester determining who finishes 1st or 2nd.
A narrow loss wouldn't be disastrous for us (i.e. Bath 2pts Exeter 4pts) as it would still give us the chance to leap frog them into top spot with a bonus point win in the final game.
If we come away with nothing then we'll have to beat Gloucester and also make sure they don't get more than a bonus point out of the game to secure 2nd.

I would stick with the same development team all the way through to the final (if they were to get there). I would be disappointed if they replaced any of the young players who got them to the knock out stage.

I totally get what you're saying, I guess JvG and co might just want to give themselves as many options as possible, as there's always the risk of our Prem Cup players picking up injuries (e.g. Cowan at the weekend).

Definitely Griff - For info the PRC teams in September were:
Bath: Woods; Emens, Hennessey, Butt, Offiah; Linegar, Carr-Smith; Kirk, Spandler, Verden; Cuckson, Richards (C), Staddon, Cowan, Green.
Replacements: Pearce, Summerfield, A.Griffin, Jeanes, Ridgway, le Roux, C.Griffin, Timmins.
Exeter Chiefs: Hodge; Brown-Bampoe, Hammersley, Slade, John; Skinner, Varney; Blose, Yeandle (C), Tchumbadze; Tuima, Pearson, Roots, Tshiunza, Vintcent.

Gosh I'd forgotten just how ludicrous their selection was
I'm sure that young Dweba, Goodrick-Clarke and Iosefa-Scott picked up invaluable inexperience going up against a grizzled, gnarly front row of Summerfield, Pearce and Griffin...
I'd expect DeGlanville, Moloney, Hill to be involved along with Tom Carr-Smith soon. Maybe Dunn, Obano & Van Wyk but hope not in a way as the young front row were great at weekend.
LH: Kirk, Summerfield, Emanuel, FvW
HK: Frost, Kepu, Pearce, Spandler, Dunn
TH: Verden, Sela, Alfie Griffin (not Archie)
LK: Richards, Jeanes, Cuckson, Bennett, Roux, Moloney
FL/8: Cowan, Staddon, Green, Ridgeway, Timmins, Treacey, Reid, Hill
SH: Davies, BVDL, TCS, le Roux
FH: Linegar, Roue
C: Redpath, Ojomoh, Harris, Butt, Hennessey, Harrison
W: Muir, Charlie Griffin, Offiah, Winters, Mason
FB: TdG, Emens, Woods
So I'd say the areas where we're looking a little thin on the ground are:
Tighthead - Archie Griffin probably won't get released by Wales in the next 2 weeks, there's the option of parachuting TdT into one of the final matchday squads. Also Summerfield has covered both sides of the scrum this season.
Flyhalf - Probably only a slim chance that Donoghue is fit for the final group game, otherwise it'll be a choice between Linegar and Roue (or putting a centre in at 10)
In compiling this list it does go to highlight how much of a squad effort this campaign has been, so kudos to the coaching staff.

I recall the semi-final last year where we were up against a Quins first team and went 14 - 0 down in the first five minutes and it felt like it was going to be a long afternoon.
I think we got to half time in the ascendancy and the score was 14 - 28 and Bath brought the bench on and we won 39 - 28.
However it was the "kids" "wot" won it with their excellent first half performance......
Perhaps we could do the same against Exeter.
As has been said above some of the first team players need some playing minutes before Saracens in three weeks time
Also I saw a lot of the lads (Alfie, TDG, JCok, Muir etc) had been on holiday to South Africa, on safari etc, and to hang out with TDT. So I'm guessing TDT is back in SA, recharging/eating fine steak to prepare for the run in!

I'm pretty sure that JVG said that TDT (along with Santi) were away for 6 weeks from the Gloucster game on 23rd Jan, which would mean unavailable until mid March-ish?

Ah fair enough, I was aware of Santi's time off, had somehow missed that the same applied to TdT.
To be fair, a combination of 3. Sela and 18. Verden would serve us pretty well against most teams, just got to hope everyone stays fit.
For Exeter this is a must win game so they will go strong. Not so much for us, so I think we will stick with the plan, maybe field one or two more first choice players on the bench.
We have a vastly superior points difference so 4-1 or 5-2, we could still top the group with 5 against Glaws the following week. 4-2 is unlikely given the losing team would need to score 4 tries and the winning team not!
I doubt we'll see Donoghue at 10 now and I suspect Roue keeps his place over Linegar. What a story that would be if we go all the way!

I was looking into the finer details of qualification earlier in the week, and it's worth noting that if 2 teams are level on points, then the next determining factor is games won (then points difference), which means if Exeter beat us and end up being 5 points ahead in the table we won't be able to topple them in the final round.

I think feeding in a couple of seniors in for this week and a couple of others for week after may be prudent to keep things fresh and give options for prepping some guys in the lead up to prem restarting.
I do agree with Matt though and would like to see vast majority of those used already continue into these 2 rounds and then into the knock outs.
Jvg will have a clear plan and sure there will be a few seniors he wants to have game time before prem.
People like beno, fvw, dunn, reid, hill, alfie, tcs, big Joe, deeg perhaps.

Good to see that Baxter was talking out of his posterior in this interview from yesterday.

Not an entirely surprising selection from either side, I suspect we've taken a pragmatic approach so that we can really target the final fixture against Gloucester.

Very few people combine being full of it with a reputation for being a straight talker like Baxter seems to manage
I am just excited at a chance to take another scalp of a much more experienced opponent with a 3rd/ 4th/5th choice set of players.
If we lose (which you imagine may well happen but I never rule out our young guys from getting an upset) we should still be able to win next week and get through all being well.
Assume jeanes injured which isn't ideal having already lost cuckson and cowan in this comp.

Did you see Lilley's interview from after the Bristol game when he was asked about Mason? He was coy and grinning to the point of suspicion. Makes me suspect the coaches think they've unearthed a player there

I would add that how many times have we seen this scenario and the the prominent first team players like Roots & Slade pick up serious injuries which cost the team massively in the Premiership.
I personally have faith in our team who time and time again have risen and I am sure this will be no different - come on boys - COYB.

Worth also remembering what the teams were in the final last year, really does show what an achievement it was from our PRC squad.
Exeter: Sio, Yeandle (c), Iosefa-Scott, Molina, Tshiunza, Roots, Vermeulen, Fisilau, Townsend, Skinner, Hodge, Tua, Hawkins, Brown-Bampoe, Wyatt.
Replacements: Frost, Blose, Street, Pearson, Capstick, Cairns, Haydon-Wood, Rigg.
Bath: Cordwell, Spandler, Verden, Jeanes, Richards (c), Green, Staddon, Barbeary, Carr-Smith, Donoghue, McConnochie, Butt, Redpath, Cokanasiga, Emens.
Replacements: Dunn, Obano, Du Toit, Reid, Pepper, Schreuder, Ojomoh, Coetzee.
Tbf I do agree exeter need to win to secure knock outs and get more games but every season through the rounds they go pretty strong and not sure it's working for them as a club.
Imagine we may introduce a handful of beno/fwv/ dunn/ reid/alfie/ hill/ big joe into our 23 next week. Otherwise we risk those guys going 2 months without a game.
Imagine tdt and santi will sit out and we just accept they may be a bit rusty.

They should still be abroad / on leave.
Exeter have a totally different mojo this year, no real viable comparisons with last year. After all, our first 23 only just beat them in Jan and that was mostly down to their 20 min red. With home advantage and a strong team they are clear favourites. We know from the Saints game that when the whistle blows that doesn't always mean much.

I have posted something similar on our website around the squad make up but I do think this is an important point.
I have looked through our contracted academy players and I can't find more than two who are available and not involved in this squad.
Very happy for someone to prove me wrong (and I suppose being down here I have more knowledge of injured players etc)
Also remember you guys have a lot of contracted academy players and invest a lot of money into it.
That's not a criticism, it is a good thing. But we can't do that and spend on senior players. Just a thought when you are saying we aren't using our players.

Yes, its tough particularly with the U20s matches on as well, hence Bath playing non (long term) contracted players Roue and Tyler Mason. I'm sure that Exeter could have pulled a few in from the Uni etc. but have chosen that they would prefer not to. I note (for example) that Two of the Exeter University Rugby Football Club players, Noah Fenton and Nic Allison are both playing with Plymouth Albion RFC in the Nat 1 this weekend.
I have not problem with that - your team, your choice!

What do you mean by "available"? Would you include academy players that are on loan at other clubs in that list?
Given Exeter's website doesn't make any distinction between senior and academy players on the squad page, it's quite challenging to figure out exactly how many you have on your books, but going off Wikipedia (so take with a pinch of salt), it says you've got:
Louie Gulley
Sol Moody
Elliot Young
Keita Ando
Joe Bailey (selected)
Ollie Batson (selected)
Oscar Beckerleg (played last week)
Alfie Bell
Charlie Bell
Jack Forsythe
Kane James (injured)
Finn Worley-Brady (selected)
Will Becconsall
Orson James
Ben Coen (played last week)
Iwan Jenkins
Louie Sinclair
Nic Allison
Kian Gentry
Campbell Ridl (played last week)
Zack Wimbush (selected)
Tom Burton
Unless everyone else on that list is crocked, it suggests Exeter's selection is a conscious choice as opposed to having limited options from the academy.
[24/25 adoptee: Francois van Wyk]
Good to see TCS & TdG in there and Roue holding onto the 10 shirt.
By sticking true to development its not being treated as a must win game by Bath.
Hopefully we'll get a competitive match but I fear the same mismatched scrum mess when the benches come on as happened in the home fixture.
Next week I expect to see a Bath Bomb Bench similar to the Quins game last year.

Ex are through. We play Glaws at home, if we win we should be through as runners-up and go to Tigers.
Good effort from everyone involved, we’re certainly seeing the benefits and future benefits of both the academy pathway and our university link up.
From my un-educated eye I see around 10 or 11 Exeter players who I’d expect to see in the Prem. For us I see 3 or 4. Exeter clearly this as a competition to win, others (us) as a competition to develop and winning is a nice bonus.
Both approaches work for their respective teams I guess
Quote:Bath Hammer
I just wondered for comparison purposes as I don’t know all the Exeter players.
I am not much of a follower of other teams and I recognised 17 of the exeter 23.
I would say we had a couple of second choices in tdg and richards and then every one else was 3rd/4th /5th choices.
As bathrob says that will have been an amazing experience for a load of young guys coming up against some very experienced prem players.
I think that is a great result for us, was pretty confident we would not get blown away and listening to the radio commentary it sounded like they stood up to the challenge v well as I hoped.
We will benefit again in future years from our approach. Imagine we will add a few more senior guys next week against glos to get them a game and improve our chances of qualification
main purpose of that being to expose these developing talents to more games in the knock outs which would be exciting. Really become a big fan of this tournament.
Apparently an exciting talent on the exeter bench...Young chap called slade. Could be a decent player (only joking, I have been won round by the arguments for them going strong and it being none of our business)
The u18s has much more intensity.
Imagine it could get competitive in knock outs as clubs sniff silverware and want to get some players prem ready.
Hope we stick with largely the same squad though- the likes of kirk, verden, bennett, richards, staddon, timmins, green, roue, butt, griffin, emens deserve their time in the sun.
Will be exeter, leic, saints and hopefully us?
Agree about u18s being mega competitive, looking forward to that later
Beno?

Has redpayh just had 1 Scotland A game?
I would be tempted to stick 3 or 4 of them on bench next week and start big joe.

So as I see it we have to beat Gloucester......is it as simple as that?
No.
A 4 point win would be ok as long as Gloucester didn't get 2 bonus points.
A 5 point win would be ok even if Gloucester got 2 bonus points as we would both have the same number of wins but our points difference will be better.
Last season it was a good trophy for the club as a whole, this season less so.

"AN OUNCE OF ACTION IS WORTH A TON OF THEORY"
FRIEDRICH ENGELS
Statistically, Tom is second choice based on games played, but, in his 50 matches played, he has only started in 3 premiership matches. His other starts (15) have come in the prem. cup competition. Most of his other appearances have been 5-10 minute cameos.
Does this make him Ben's heir? Given the one-year contract extension, I'd posit not.
Ben has 2 years to run on his contract. The question is, for me, is BVLD going to be good enough to replace Ben or do we recruit a top notch 9 in 12 month's time.
Only time will tell - the scrum half selections for the remaining prem matches may well indicate which way the coin will fall...
It's all, of course conjecture, which is part of the joy of being able to debate the hypothetical.

Hodge, F-W, Ikitau, Varney, Ridl, Hammersley, Rigg, Blose, Dweba, Jenkins, Zambonin, Vintcent, Capstick, Sio, Hooper, KJames, Painter, Tchumbadze, Yeandle,
Just the 19 not inc Fisilau and Slade who tho came off the bench, the game was done by then.
Will be cheering you on next week tho as we’d back ourselves in a home semi
This has been gone over ad infinitum at this point - you guys see this as a cup competition to play first teamers in order to have a serious crack at winning. We see it as a development competition to expose younger players. The better team won on the day, fingers crossed we get a chance to even it up in the final against you.
They were the only fit bench alternatives to cover back row and utility backs.
Effectively Haydon Wood and Slade would normally cover the same positions on the field so you wouldn't pick them both to play if you had other fit players to choose from.

I don’t think anyone is claiming you put out a gun, cup final 23 RowanCroft, but you can’t seriously claim that it wasn’t a highly experienced team with several members of your regular Prem 23, as opposed to our squad with 4 maximum who play regularly?

Fair comment BathRob
I do tho feel the need to mention the huge disparity between your excellent developing players and ours. We couldnt possibly put out an equivalent development team that you have at your disposal. Mainly due to the arrangement you have with BCS and Bath Uni. Ive heard on good authority that Bath are very generous in heavily subsidizing fees both at Uni and at BCS boarding. We do have Exeter Uni pathway but that doesnt begin until 18+. Big difference conoared to Beechen who scout from a much earlier age

I mean, ok, maybe. But those people are playing for the U18s, not the Prem Cup team. And (again you are well within your rights to do this) Exeter have _always_ picked more experienced Prem Cup teams.
Genuine question, are you concerned about the Exeter pathway? You had that excellent core of 10+ players who all seemed to come through together and got you to several Finals. Nowadays it seems like that’s not happening and it can be a bit see-saw in terms of squad quality and depth.
I continue to hope that someone will take a look at competition and improve the product - that most of the games aren't even broadcast is a reflection of where it currently is as a competition. For me, not having the Champ clubs this year was a step backwards and based on some of the results there is also a need to ensure that the matches are more balanced / competitive.

1. No more than x players above the age of y
2. No more than x players who have played more than y games for the Ist XV
3. x medical jokers, players recovering from injury
etc, etc
Chiefs who are working on a shoestring compared to you, need wins to get the revenue, until we get more teams in the league to make the prem viable to all, not just the wealthy Bristol, Bath, Tigers and others. Think we are the poor group with Gloss and Newcastle who have a great backer now, after covid destroyed our way of raising cash it’ll take a while to return.
So using the players we have, is a necessity, until the next young guns come through which they will.
Finances are the main reasons teams put out what they do, if we had your money ( not a criticism, it’s the way it is at the moment ) we would play differently.
All the best this season, we may have different methods at the moment, but having rugby union to watch is what counts.
EITHER
Stay faithful to the development team ethos and risk getting knocked out.
That would risk two blank weekends and no more development (or needed game) time for anyone.
OR
Beef the side up and hopefully ensure progression. More development/game time for everyone.
Put it like that and the second option is a no-brainer and of course is exactly what we did last year.
So I'd being going with something like:
Tom De Glanville
Austin Emens
Chris Harris
Will Butt
Will Muir
Will Roue
Tom Carr-Smith
Scott Kirk
Dan Frost
Kieran Verden
Ross Molony
Ewan Richards
Ethan Staddon
Miles Reid
Arthur Green
Replacements
Kepueli Tuipulotu
Francois Van Wyk
Vilikesa Sela TH
Quinn Roux
Ted Hill
Bernard van der Linde
Max Ojomoh
Alfie Barbeary

Adopted players:
2015/6 Tom Homer
2016/7 Matt Banahan
2017/8 Jeff Williams
2018/9 Victor Delmas
2019/20 Semesa Rokoduguni
2020/21 Will Stuart
The best analysis I've seen that compares the 2 line ups was posted on the Bath Rugby Supporters FB page (credit to the number cruncher behind it), but as you can see the squads were miles apart in terms of experience.
So for example:
- Exeter's XV had double the number of 1st team appearances (96) compared to Bath's (48)
- Exeter's bench had more 1st team appearances (66) than our entire squad (65)
- Bath had 13 players in the squad who have yet to represent the 1st team this season, Exeter had 3
As has been repeated by many posters, any team can do whatever they want when it comes to selection, ultimately Bath see this as an important part of their long term vision for player development, whilst other clubs clearly view it as a route to short term success. We'll only find out which approach bears fruit in the years to come.

Not sure I follow BM? Ross wasn't involved at the weekend, but we had his namesake (James) making his debut from the bench, and then Marty playing for Chiefs.

Ah, my bad. I've never heard of James Moloney!!

@Which Tyler - Judging by the performance at the weekend, I think you outdid most of England's analysts with this spreadsheet, keep your phone switched on, you might get a call from big Steve.

Here's another interesting thought. Name another International-level, home-grown scrum half Bath has generated in the last 30 years other than Richard Hill and Gareth Cooper.
Will Homer must have quite a few international 7s caps...
But serious answer it does seem that some clubs don't produce certain types of player. Dunno if that's by design or not but we do at least seem to have a few decent 9 prospects in the academy at the moment

I think there are some other factors at play here as well, as in the past ~15 years the England 9 shirt has been dominated by two players who went on to become centurions (Youngs and Care), which is a pretty unusual situation and has obviously left precious few caps to go to scrum halves at other clubs.
That being said the only other 9 that we've produced that's gone on to play relatively regularly for the first team was Chris Cook, and he was never close to getting capped.
Cook had the shirt at times but never for prolonged periods then there was a year or so of Chudley and a mix bag of others. Line of succession last 20 years is more or less Claassens - Stringer - Kahn - Chudley and co - Spencer unless I'm forgetting someone?

Only one change to your team Jayeatman.....I would have Max Ojomoh start instead of Chris Harries
I could live with that!

Emens
Big joe
Mojo
Butt
Griffin
Roue
Tcs
Kirk
Kepu
Verden
Richards
Ewels
Staddon
Timmims
Green
Bench: frost, fvw, sela, hill, bennett, bvdl, redpath, alfie
Completely rest beno, dunn, tdt , roux, reid, santi for return of prem.
Assume malony still injured?
If we have ambitions of retaining the trophy then option 2 or 3 will probably be required but to be honest as I said at the top I will be happy whichever way JvG goes - he is always looking at the bigger picture at the end of the day.

It is.

Quote:The only issue with giving senior players more rest is that if the teams doesn’t win then there won’t be competitive matches to play in before the return of the Premiership. I could see a mix and match approach. JvG will know exactly who needs a start to get their engine running and who will need another week on the sofa.

I've seen that Harlequins have done just this as have an away friendly to Cornish Pirates next week and was announced on 19th January. The Championship clubs don't have a match until 20-22nd March but probably too late to organise a public friendly match. Bath have trained against Cardiff in recent seasons and would be nice if they linked up with Worcester Warriors where some players are on loan.
Where does the game appear on television?
Thanks

Comment aged well.
I get the reasons behind the Glaws selection but yes, I would have preferred the younger guys get more chance.

Beno, fvw, dunn, roux, ewels, hill, reid, alfie, big Joe would have been in that boat alongside tdt and santi.
Think main point is that in first 7 rounds of 8 we chose to play uni scholars, academy guys, guests rather than senior squad.

All of the Prem sides saw it as a run out prior to the Prem restart I think - even those in dead rubbers such as Bristol and Sale.
Looked liek Bris and sale were both as full strength as they could be given call ups.
Last chance for a run out for them before the Prem returns
