AIM FOR GLORY. BATH v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS ECC QUARTER FINAL

Hill: to start?

By PG Tips
April 7 2026

Both sides will be aiming for glory when Bath host Northampton Saints in Friday’s European Quarter Final. Victory will confirm England’s leading candidate to upset five years of French club dominance of the tournament. It will also pitch the winners into a daunting Semi Final, against either last year’s victors Bordeaux Begles or six times Champions Toulouse. That would be at a neutral venue, in England. First  though, this match must be won.

That itself is a challenge, as it should be in knockout rugby. Northampton Saints’ last visit to the Rec earned them a bonus point win, a six try humbling of their successors as domestic champions, gained by a largely reserve selection. Whatever the excuses about Christmas hangovers, Northampton’s aggressive disruption and incisive attack exposed several weaknesses also visible recently in the latest Prem fixtures. The cracks Bath must swiftly repair include lineout frailty, poor guard defence at the ruck and midfield defence against changes of running angle.

Saints Prem title defence suffered badly last year from the impact of early season injuries. They compensated with the best European Champions Cup campaign by an English Club for many seasons, beating Leinster in the semi-final at the Aviva in Dublin and giving first time winners Bordeaux a scare in the Final. They still though, finished the season empty handed for trophies, while seeing Bath claim an historic “treble”. That will stick in their craw and they will rightly claim that it is the Champions Cup rather than Challenge Cup that signals true greatness. They will not lack for motivation.

Unfortunately their injury curse has struck again and they will be without Davison, Coles, Mitchell, Smith and Todaro. Bath should not be complacent though: Saints’ strength in depth rivals Bath’s and December 27, 2025, showed what a fired-up Northampton can do. Leading danger men could be the ubiquitous Pollock, the thundering van der Mescht and in the backs, free running Freeman and Furbank.

Bath, first English winners of the ECC (Northampton were the second), will almost certainly rotate their selection but heavily based on last week’s Prem 23. Prime areas for change look to be the front row and loose forwards. They cannot afford another slow start at the scrum and, while Tom Dunn struggled to find his jumpers, Kepu Tuipulotu hit six clean throws in a row in tough conditions when he came on. Could he get the nod to start? I expect van Graan to refresh the backrow, so starts for Hill (whose heft, speed and lineout presence should be valuable) and Underhill look likely, with Pepper, Bayliss or Reid to bring new vigour from the bench. In the backs, could there be starts for Muir (for his aerial prowess), Carr-Smith, Redpath and de Glanville? That any of those selections would be tough on those they replace just shows the regular selection headache van Graan faces.

Whatever the lineup, to win Bath will need all their usual determination, energy and the stamina for an eighty plus minute tussle. To their usual command of the basics and choice of the wise options, I hope they add flair and the occasional surprise- like the line Arundell took for his first try on Saturday. Those will be needed to unlock Northampton’s defence.

Anything can happen in knockout rugby. However tough the next round’s task, it is neither impossible, nor here yet. Thoughts of glory must wait. This is the one to win.

COYB!

Thanks PG.

I agree this feels like a Redpath game. Relatedly I wonder if JvG tries to get as many jackal threats / spoilers as he can on the field and sends out a Pepper / Underhill / Reid back row?

I feel like our best path to victory is to win at the breakdown, scramble hard and unload du Toit, Hill, Barbeary and Kepu later to use power against their missing depth.

On paper we shouldn't have the same issues at the scrum this week so feel ok about du Toit on the bench again.

Agree TRS - I think we could see Sela start, Van Wyk starting makes sense to me as well.

I'd go with Underhill and Reid to start to deal with their big forward carriers - Kemeny, van de Mescht, Chick. Hill starting makes sense given the speed Saints play and his cover defence excellence

Ollie Lawrence got married yesterday (according to instagram) and appears to be heading to Bordeaux. I suspect that this is a pre-planned week off for him. It's likely that we will see Redpath at 12 and Ojomoh at 13 on Friday.

That's interesting and I have to say very surprising

I don't actually think this will happen, but I wonder if we might go to a centre pairing of Ojomoh + Redpath. I love Lawrence going forward but it feels like he gets beaten on his outside quite a lot. Saints are one of the best teams at isolating the 13 (prem final...), and Ojomoh/Redpaths superior lateral defence may be a better option (even if we lose a big attacking weapon).

As I say, I don't think it will happen but just a thought...

Edit: Wow, I wrote that before I saw the wedding comment - maybe that is the plan after all then...bold call

Congratulations Olly. I get a warm feeling about JVG's management, he has made several comments about the importance of family life and his religious beliefs, this may be another example of his thinking. The polar opposite of some coaches who have a one eyed vision of how to manage players. Cam can step in.

Bath are strong favourites with the bookies for this one but I don't feel the same way. The odds should be more like those for the UBB v Toulouse match imo.

Ollie Sleightholme has also just got married, must be a week for the Ollies and Saints do seem to have similar views about their players.

Jeeze there are some tough calls.

Think I would go:

Santi
Arundell
Lawrence
Redpath
Muir
Finn
Spencer

Beno
Dunn
Sela
Roux
Ewels
Hill
Pepper
Alfie

Bench: kepu, fvw, tdt, richards, reid, bvdl, mojo, underhill

Can't crowbar in bayliss anywhere without dropping hill to the bench and think he is due a start.

V tight call between santi/ tdg- feel that with games santi will really start to have a lot of influence but v harsh on tdg.

Think redpaths jackal threat will be useful.

Imagine malony is ahead of richards as lock cover but I would rather see richards.

Charlieboa, I agree with a lot of that. The wing selection is a conundrum. Joe C had one of his best games for Bath on Saturday but we need Will Muir’s ability in the air and Henry Arundell is close to being undroppable at the moment. I’m not sure Ollie Lawrence will play so I see Max starting at 12. Although he showed flashes of his true form, I don’t think Santi is consistent enough yet to nail down the starting 15 shirt, and I’d opt for TdG. Santi is versatile so I’d have him on the bench for this one and give him more game time in the Prem. This is knockout rugby and we can’t take chances.
BvDL is a great talent and really good to watch, especially when we need to attack from 9, but TCS has a track record of controlling and closing out games in the last 10 or 15 minutes. It’s a hard call!

I agree DL, TDG would be my starting 15 on Friday - not least because he has been rested and it's a 6 day turnaround.

No issue with that at all. Tdg has been class the last few years

On form I think it's tdg...challenge is running santi into some top end form.

Cokanasiga starts for me. Would be surprised if it's not him and Arundell.

Full back I don't have a strong opinion either way really. Whoever is going to catch everything that comes their way and not give the Saints back three any loose balls to run back please...

Having a consistent run might help with Santi's consistency...

I though Saturday was one of his best games for Bath - but with Redpath looking likely to start, makes sense as the bench option

Maybe Ollie's new wife is talking about the Euro semi final? Getting ahead of herself but I love the optimism. Lol.

I absolutely love JvG's approach to squad management, but I must admit I'm surprised by this. It's one of the biggest games in the club's recent history, so a) our England 13 should be picked to start at 13 and/or b) if he isn't being picked on form, then he should be at least involved in the training week, prepping the team.

I could understand him missing a PREM match- but I will find his absence from a Euro knock out match very odd.

Wouldn’t read too much into that - probably the UK legal marriage yesterday and the ceremony/party marriage in France at a later date. Very normal to have a few weeks gap between both events. Anyway let’s see!

Personally, I think for a game of this magnitude, you pick the players with the highest ceiling and, within reason, disregard form.

Ignore the potential, for example, of one of the players of the Autumn Internationals season for such a momentous game, and I think you risk them wondering why they signed up. Much as I love TdG, he's been nowhere near an International cap in an era when Freddie Steward has a cupboard-full of them and Santi could carve the whole game open in an instant.

I think every selection suggested here can work. In a way, I feel like the tactics are going to be more important, although those tactics could lead to the likes of Horse starting over Big Joe.

The big question going round in my head is, what's the best way to counter Saints' game plan? They blitzed us early at the Gardens last January and then we got some control to get back into the game. They blitzed us in the second half in December and we couldn't get back into the game. So what's the best way to stop them?

I honestly don't know the answer, but it could be kicking for territory and trying to pen them into their own 22. Or it could be starving the back three of counter attacking opportunities. We'll clearly need to neutralise Pollock, who is probably worth three turnovers a game – that might require the speed of Bayliss.

Seems phenomenally unlikely that Ollie would plan or be willingly granted, or even want a weekend off around a game of such magnitude. JVG might be a jolly nice chap, but Ollie’s job is playing rugby, especially during the rugby season. Be a bit like Father Christmas taking a long weekend from the 24th to 26th December.

They came fast out of the blocks, though, and seemed intent on taking the initiative - nothing wrong with the effort, it was just the execution!

Personally think the squad might be:

TdG
Henry A
Ollie L
Cam R
Will M

Finn R
Ben S

Francois VW
Tom D
Billy Sela
Charlie E
Quinn R
Ted H
Miles R
Sam U

Kepu T/Dan F
Beno O
Thomas DT
Josh B
Guy P
Alfie B
Santi C
Bernard VDL

I guess that makes sense.

Bristol City being at home on the Saturday would have limited TVs options to the Sunday.

Selfishly, MK is the easier and cheaper. But ofc completely irrelevant if we don't win on Friday

It’s surprising how often we concede first for a team at Bath’s level. I think it must be by design to an extent and the team are set up to be consistent and methodical for 80mins. Happens to often to be an accident that teams come out flying against us and we chip away and wear them down as the game goes on

We don’t have to start the game at max intensity on Friday (or in any possible semi) and I don’t care if they score first but important to keep things close enough for our game plan to play out so we don’t have too much to do

MK 3.5 - 4 hrs from Bath by train with 2 or 3 changes (or over 2.5hrs drive) + no doubt a huge pain getting there from Toulouse. Surely there was a better alternative!

I guess that Sale, Bath and Saints all had to be accounted for. Looks like Saints got the long straw and they don't think much of Sale's chances.

If Toulon won at Glasgow and Leinster beat Sale, country advantage would then be with Leinster making it a home game for them.

Unlikely to happen though as Toulon have been rubbish since they beat us and. Have little chance of beating Glasgow.

As always, Leinster the only team allowed to play a semi at one of their home grounds.
They should be made to play at Thomond Park, or at Croke Park, but never allowed to use the Aviva for a semi given how many pool games (and R16) games they play at the Aviva when at home.

The semi- final venues have been confirmed. They’ve selected one venue from each of France, Scotland, Ireland and England.
Stade Atlantique Bordeaux Métropole, Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium, Stadium MK, or Aviva Stadium

Stadium MK is closer to Northampton than Bath, I wonder if that is a factor 🤔

It's a real shame because, especially with petrol prices as they are, even if we're lucky enough to be hosting a "home" semi, I'd be surprised to see BB&W fill that stadium. Surely it would be sensible to wait 3 more days and then put the "home" stadium marginally closer to the "home" team? I know it's supposed to be neutral but the danger is they don't fill it and then look silly for an SF.

I'm still expecting UBB to win, so win or lose on Friday, we're either at home on the sofa or in Bordeaux!

Hopefully the coaches will be drumming it in to our boys, Guy Peoper and Bernie van der Linde in particular to not let Pollock wind them up. Fall into that trap and Saints have won a significant battle.

I think this is a game made for Underhill to start and to man mark Pollock personally - take him out of the game and our chances of winning improve significantly

He's a top player but he doesn't warrant the man marking treatment. That Saints team has far too many other threats to focus solely on Pollock. Would rather make sure they get slow / messy ball and give the half backs a tough night

Mitchell, Smith and Hendy back fit for Saints. Not bad to have England's first pick half backs returning, along with a guy who has been our nemesis in the past!

They've still got a couple of other first XV starters out, but that's some firepower they're bringing back. I think the big one might be that given how Davison is out, if Iyogun isn't fit, that would be a big loss and could give us an edge up front.

If they are vulnerable in the front row, we should really be maxing out on that opportunity. Front-row penalties, and the absurdity of YCs as a solution to not being as strong as your opposite number can properly derail a team.

Some crazy odds being offered IMO, 15/4 with Betway on a Saints win with the rest all being around 3/1. Bath win 1/4. The spread is 9.5 points. Compare that with Bordeaux vs Toulouse where it's a point.

I see Bath vs Saints as two top of the table teams going at it in a 1 off game and would say its 50/50 personally.

Interesting that both sides have their big carrying 8s starting from the bench for this one.

Sensible selection IMHO - Joe C is unlucky but Will Muir is a better defender and is superb in the air (hope I haven't cursed him) although Joe C has developed superbly this season, a bit surprised that Josh Bayliss isn't in the 23 but given that Ross Moloney will most likely replace Quinn and Charlie will be hoped to play the full game it means Super Ted will probably replace Sam Underhill and Alfie Miles Reid.

Bernard VDL for me will be interesting especially for Mitchell to face - he won't know too much about him and that goes for Saints in general - VDL has exceptional pace and potentially could stress Mitchell given his recent injury and lack of game time/training time.

This will be a cracker and once again we must as Bath supporters make the extra player and bring the noise to the Rec - it definitely rattled Sarries at times on Saturday.

Come On Bath

Just shows the quality of our squad we have when you can look at that XXIII and still question it! No Mojo is a shame IMO, but Cam deserves a start in a big game to prove what a big game player he is. Muir, too. Love the starting back row, and interesting that we've gone for Maloney as 2R cover rather than trusting Hill to do it. Looks like we want to keep full press on at set piece for 80mins.

Our bomb squad looks marginally more powerful than theirs but Mitchell coming on will be interesting, as his experience and game management could be crucial in a tight contest.

Nervous now. Too close to cal but I'll go Bath by 5. Come on you Bath!

"In theory" it shouldn't be a major issue. Fischetti is class but Sela has held his own against similar before - Toulon in particular - and the issues at Sale seemed to be on the other side. Beno should have an advantage on our loosehead and I'd back Dunn over Langdon in the middle. Lots of mass to shift from van der Mescht behind but I think if anyone "should" have an edge it's us

Intentional quotes there because"stuff happens"

Most of them will know each other from various representative camps (age grade and seniors) so I'm sure they will all just play the game in the spirit of rugby union and have a beer after.

Likewise (I don't 'mind' him) - and as long as he keeps delivering on the pitch he'll win everyone over. However, much like the players who routinely describe their (current) coach as 'the best they've ever played under', I remain unconvinced that other players like him as much as they say they do in the course of media duties.

Guy Pepper and Henry Pollock had never met before the autumn internationals, but they roomed together, they went on holiday together to Dubai, and they have forged a dynamic back-row alliance that has been transformational for England. Opposites attract. Pepper is the anti-Pollock, the least likely of England’s breakthrough stars of 2025 to enjoy the camera.

“There’s definitely one that loves the limelight more than the other,” Pepper says, laughing.
“I had never met him before November. I didn’t think I was going to like him. But he is a great person to be around. People like him help to bring the team together in a short space of time.

“He’s honestly a completely different person in the room. He’s constant, but not actually as full-on as you think. But you have to put up with a lot of bullshit. At 8pm, you tell him to wind his neck in and he sorts himself out. It’s quiet time.”
“Henry has been playing some unbelievable rugby, scoring some crazy tries which I am very jealous of,” Pepper says. “He should have hit more rucks. No, I’m joking. Hopefully, we can continue winning games together.”

Yep - good point. And then the last 5 finals all won by French clubs, with just Ireland....sorry I meant Leinster's occasional challenge and just one other club featuring - Northampton last year. Needs change.

Pollock isn't really for me personality wise, prefer an understated class act like pepper but have no issue with him and he is good for the game which does need all the help it can get to grow.

As others have said as long as he is backing it up on the pitch then no problem with the big personality stuff.

One of many we need to keep an eye on this eve.

I think dingwall and Hutchinson are unbelievable players at club level- so clever, so accurate, so creative- add freeman etc into the mix , with f Smith pulling strings they will definitely cause us headaches

Like our selection- 6 starting changes, 4 into the 23 from last week.... keeps it fresh and energised, a full squad effort.

Fairly amazing to think bayliss, mojo and big joe can't make the squad. All can feel hard done by but I have no issue with any of the decisions.

Tho jvg says they moved on fast from the dec thrashing and haven't done much analysis I don't really believe that.

Looks a bit like a team picked with the opposition in mind- three 7s in the backrow and a 12 very good over the ball. Feels like we are desperate to try and slow then down.

Then the sledgehammer power off the bench with the likes of kepu, tdt, hill and barbeary.

Pollock's try v Leinster last season was one of the best ever individual tries I've seen. Just hoping that Pollock hasn't turned up for tonight

100% Charlie, if you want eyes on rugby union then there need to be players who are different and interesting characters. Ronnie OS, Luke L, Tyson Fury, John Daly even Conor McGregor are all marmite but talented characters that have attracted eyes to their sports.

He certainly has the ability to change a game in an instant, but so do a lot of their players. We need to make everything tight, give them any chance to get their patterns working and they will be outside of our defence.

I think we might have an edge up front, but it won’t matter if their backs start cutting loose.

I’m excited, got a fantastic ticket right in the middle of the main stand for £55 which IMO is a bargain for European knock out rugby.

Only shame is that it’s been 2 English teams in a row. I wish they’d do something to the format to enable a bit more variety!

I personally think Pollock has an enormous ceiling and his personality doesn't really matter to me, he is a young talent but has not nailed down his position either in club or Country. Kepu and Billy S have similar ceilings in our ranks. The difference is that their personalities are not as audacious and brash as Pollock's. He is not the first and won't be the last to wind up opposition - Syd Going, Brian Moore, Mick Skinner just to name a few players who also drew similar attention from opposition.

Maybe I am old fashioned and in all honesty I think it is a bit disingenuous for all the attention to focus on one player when Saints deserve so much more attention elsewhere. The likes of Freeman, Furbank, Mitchell and Smith cause me more concern than Pollock.

JvG & Co will just be urging the 23 to focus on their game plan and play to the best of their abilities and not on one player.

Looking at our line up its pretty clear JvG is looking to slow Saints down with 4 jackalers (including Redpath). If this plan is rewarded and the likes of Russell and Lawrence are on it I think we will win tonight.

adopted player, 24/25 Hame Faiva. 23/24 Ted Hill. 22/23 Cam Redpath. 21/22 Max Clark. 20/21 Henry Thomas. 19/20 Max Wright. 18/19 Cooper Vuna.

Pollock not for me either but my God he's good for our sport.

Also feel like he's the perfect foil for Freeman, Smith, Mitchell etc in that he takes all the attention off them - he loves it and I get the impression none of them do.

Aside from the HP show, I think we had no choice but to try and slow them down tonight after December. Going for it at the breakdown makes total sense...hopefully it works!

One of those rare home games under JvG where a win is no better than 50/50. Can’t recall us beating a full strength Saints in recent times and they utterly destroyed us in December.

Fortunately it’s the CC so for me it lacks the importance of a PL game. Don’t like losing but will be less grumpy if we do.

Nervous today. I kind of agree with you OB that I won't be too hacked off if we go out to a good Saints team at the QFs, but I also think this is our chance at the Big Euro Title. Still a super long shot, given the French sides, but I feel that this year, with TDT and Finn top of his game, is the time we need to shoot our shot. Hence I'm absolutely fired up for it, and I think JvG will have the boys on edge. Need the Rec to be rocking, which I'm sure it will be. Can't wait for the Bath Bomb to be dropped.

Good Stuart Barnes article in the Times today about the Saints scrum halves, but also mentioning how "The Recreation Ground has hosted many a memorable night game in the past 40 years but potentially few, if any, to match this Champions Cup quarter-final."

Agree! Can't wait. Come on you Bath!

Quite surprised at that! A prem semi or final maybe, but a normal PL game? The champions cup is still the top competition in club rugby, despite it's many, many faults! In my eyes to be a top top side you have to win it. I must admit for most of the group games the competition is rubbish, however you are now left with the top European sides, and Sale!! Well you can't expect Leinster to have to play anyone decent yet!!
I'm excited for this round of the competition even as a neutral.

It takes me back to that infamous game at home Oct 2018 with Toulouse the eventual winners 20-22 and Bruce Craig calling for the game to be replayed due to the final whistle blown early a few seconds and the citings of Kaino 5 week ban , yellow on the field and Pointud no on field sanction , a 4 week ban both for shoulder to head tackles both should have been red according to the citing officer. Apart from Freddie’s unfortunate error it could have certainly been a different scoreline !

I've got three strong conflicting emotions about tonight

The obvious one is intense nervousness of possibility of being beaten by a top quality team that plays a great brand of attacking rugby backed up with strength of defence

There's another of immense excitement of seeing just what we can do with the quality of squad out there tonight and beyond

And then I come back to being purely phelgmatic knowing that it will be no dishonour to go out if we do to such a top quality 23 that Saints have

But if we do fall short I will be hoping Saints go all the way

Ok, it's almost time to get the lucky boxers on and pour the first beer 🙃

I agree gaz- I'm SO up for this and really hope we play to our potential AND get the win. In my lifetime, having been just too young at the time to truly appreciate the 80s/90s, I've never had it this good, with the quality and consistency of our performances. Last June was a peak. But this season feels like we can go even higher if our big players step up and deliver.

But if we play to our potential and still get beat by a great Saints side, packed with young English talent, so be it and good luck to them.

Should be a belter of an evening.

Not for me if we lose Gaz, definitely want one of the French teams if it’s not Bath.

If we do lose it gives Saints a massive advantage over us in the PL.

Firstly we don't do what we've done too many times and concede a soft try very early

Second that both teams keep all 15 players on pitch. No cards

And third, the ref and officials have really good games

That way whichever team comes out on top it will be truly deserved

We are usually much better in the 2nd half and Saints will know this given how well they played in the first 40. We are back on it but must not fold in 2nd half. Lineout, defence in the 22 and discipline all needs to be much better.

Your a very good team and I wish you well, and hope you go all the way. But it is the truth that spending up to the cap and home advantage was the difference. I am proud of the Saints boys, I believe we would have won that are home. And if your honest, you will know that too

We earned home advantage and you also have the option to spend up to the cap. So your “extra £1m” is just your disappointment speaking. Fair play, I’d be gutted too. Saints were unreal in the first half but we took control of the second and marginally deserved the win. Like I said, great game of rugby.

Well that was in doubt. I watched on my phone from Athens and have never wanted to be at The Rec more.
The belief JVG had instilled is remarkable.

Saints have some justification on the rough calls but thats rugby. But to be churlish, their backs were a yard offside for the whole of the first half. Overall I thought Brace did a good job.

Saints are a hell of a good team and this result may just shorten our chances of retaining the Prem. Let's hope for a Twickers rematch.

In the meantime, COYB!

Of course in salty about the ref ruining the chances of a deserved win away. It’s the first thing Dallaglio said on comms- you got all the decisions including the Pollock yellow which was strange and was the turning point of the game. What’s the point of a TMO if he doesn’t intervene in such a blatantly horrific call.

Bath were lethal when they had chances. Russel goes missing then come up with class moments. Du Toit won't be a massive loss for you in big games next year. Scrum did not really change when he came on.

Pollock got told to take his hands off the ball and didn't. Identical situation to FvW earlier, just after a linebreak in the 22. Arguable whether it was accurate or not, but if you don't listen to the ref...

You’re missing the point- Carreras was lying across the ruck having sealed the ball off? Right in front of the ref. How was the ref missed that and then why hasn’t the TMO come in when we get a yellow with 10 to go?!

Blimey. Might need to be signed off work after that. What a ridiculous game of rugby.

The minerals in this squad to stay in matches when we should be down and out is something else. Holding Saints to 3 points in the last 45 mins is a huge effort after a shocking start and no line out to speak of throughout.

Love this team.

You can argue sealed off at basically every ruck. Brace didn't give a sealed off all match, so you play the ref.

SaintsAsh - a very fair post. True rugby fans are always welcome here and we all know emotions run high, especially on days like this. The league game at the Gardens just got spicier and hopefully we will see you at HQ. Saints are a credit to the Prem and the wider game.

Some slightly disappointing comments from some saints fans- thanks to the more magnanimous amongst you, as classy as your team have been this season.

I would take comfort that this result probably means you will play our 2nd team at home in a few weeks and improves your chances of cementing 1st choice and having a great chance at winning the prem again.

Was gutsy from us, seriously gutsy. Lots to love about this team and some clear improvements that could (and need to) happen to our game.

Was underhill failed hia the only injury? Hard to follow everything in that wild game!

Obano went off after a scrum. Limping around at half time as well but no boot / crutches etc so fingers crossed.

Donoghue was out in the warm up though which was good to see

Just an incredible experience at the ground, and a frankly ridiculous game of rugby. Took both sons plus friends and don't think they'll ever have more entertainment for £5 each for the rest of their lives!

Saints were on a different level first half, a (painful) joy to watch. Ref was all over the place for both sides. The pantomine cheer when Pollock got sent off was proper laugh out loud funny.

Can't remember another game like that. Well played Saints and just so proud to follow Bath

Prob prudent to have rested him next week anyway- let's hope he is ok to come back after that as hugely important to us.

The last 4 minutes heart breaking for Pollock and Saints, euphoric for the blue black and white. Incredible entertainment played out by the two best sides in England.

OMG that was an absolutely bonkers game of rugby and unbelievably stressful at the end.

Obviously the win was the best thing, but a close second was the yellow card for Pollock. The Rec really enjoyed that.

Did anyone else notice the sneaky off-the-ball tackles on Sam and Finn in the build up to the Pollock try that opened the scoring?

Saints did a lot of clearing out well behind the ruck too, which the referee didn't pick up on.

If you can get away with it then it's fair game in my eyes, but that's something we need to counter next time the two sides meet.

Off in the morning to get a tattoo of the carnage TDT and FVW caused at that Saints scrum in the 75th minute. Most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

WHAT a game. Huge credit to Saints. That young 9 is going to be a player. And well done and thank you to all at Bath Rugby, from Bruce and JvG, through the squad and the purples, to everyone else involved at Farleigh. That was some night. You made a middle aged man cry and howl with pure unadulterated joy.

We dare to dream… Allez Bath!!

Just got up in Malaysia to read the comments 'ere and then watch the extended You Tube highlights.

First thing to note there is not one mention of the score in the pages and pages above.

Second thing, whilst I knew we had won and it was a big score for both teams the extended highlights made it look a very even game....well of course it was.

I agree that Saints in the first 20 minutes were able to slice through us, seemingly at will. However in the second half we did some of that to them as well.

Funny that in all the pages above I don't recall any mention of a yellow card for their big South African.

The coaching squad have got a lot to think about because Toulouse and Bordeaux will be Saints on steroids.

Very sad to have missed an extraordinary match at the Rec.....but tempered by the fact that we won!

I was at the Rec to witness this breathless game. When Finn missed a conversion I said to my brother “we’ll lose this by a point”. I knew we’d come strong over the 80 but had big doubts about bringing it home. Saints had to make 2 changes to pack in first 25 mins & that told in final 20. Saints pack were puffing big time. With a flakey lineout again we still won. All 23 players made an impact & didn’t flinch. Our pack won the game. Saints backs made it a game.
Brace did us no favours apart from only giving penalty for Alfie’s Pollack dump. Brace missed a lot of things that any ex player like me spotted immediately. But most importantly Brace was far too patient for repeated Saints penalties in red zone in 2nd half before finally having to give YC to Pollack. He took a team yellow for their continued infringements. It should have happened earlier !!!!
In JVG we trust👍

It is amazing that middle aged men get so wound up by a teenage rugby player. In terms of the match, you had home advantage and the game hinged on the Pollock yellow, which should have been a penalty the other way. A very lucky win.

Regarding the Pollock yellow, I thought the ref got it wrong, but he got it wrong twice, Henry shouldn’t have been on the field. One minute earlier Bath broke the line, were in a great attacking position with Saints retreating and he has his hands on the floor but continues to play the ball - with the ref awarding us a scrum for him knocking it on. It was a stonewall yellow in my book as he killed the play, a little like Miles in the second minute, and the commentators didn’t even mention it.

He had a mixed game for both sides, Barbs got a little lucky, but so did the Saints player (Hutchinson I believe) for the “accidental trip”.

That aside, a great comeback win and real character shown from the boys yet again. Some fantastic attacking rugby from both teams! The set-piece is a real concern though, the one area of the team we seem to be less than the sum of our parts and have been for a couple of seasons in my opinion. Not just the line out either, the scrum without TdT, which we will be next season, is a worry.

I understand the Saints supporters’ emotions around the yellow card decision against Henry Pollock, not helped by the commentators who didn’t seem to have heard what the Referee actually said. His clear view was that a ruck had formed. Pollock wasn’t the tackler (I think it was Freeman) and it wasn’t open play, so Pollock can’t use his hands. Having decided that it was an offence, given where it occurred and the momentum that Bath were building it’s not surprising that he decided that a yellow was appropriate.

An earlier post suggested Brace was not a good ref, his performance last night proved that. Missed so many things to list all of them.

As for Barbs, thought it was going to be at least a yellow even though Pollock milked it.

If I had been a Saints supporter I would have admittedly been joyous at the huge lead they built up against a supposedly fine defensive side, which we often aren’t, but exceedingly distressed at how we capitulated in the 2nd half, only scoring one miserly penalty. I would have been much more unhappy about that than one of many suspect refereeing decisions. Also, why would the presence of Pollock on the field have definitely prevented a Bath win. This reaction from certain Saints supporters is surprising & something I would have more likely expected from Bristol. They have very much gone down in my estimation!

It’s emotional which is why it’s fun, and we’d be the same if they’d kicked an 80th minute penalty, but Devonport Lad puts it well.

Moreso sealing off happens SO often, almost at most rucks I’d argue. Lockett’s try, the phase prior, oh it’s Pollock diving off his feet to seal, preventing Reid from competing. So to say the game hinged on an offence not being given that is so rarely given is silly. As Devonport says, it’s a line break and Pollock not listening to the ref. Yellow.

I wouldn’t question the ref’s decision making. Rather I’d question why the 9 (who was absolutely brilliant) tapped and went with 3 points on offfer (to win the game). That, in hindsight, was the wrong decision.

Anyway. How good was Finn? We’ve not even mentioned the triple pump, the wait, and the Arundell after burners!

Being as it was a close game with a few controversial decisions you're always going to get some upset supporters. Personally, I always try and stay away from any opposition boards following a game, if you lose you can often come across as unsporting, and if you win it always feels like gloating.
The game itself was an enjoyable game for a neutral and very much a game of two halves.
The first half saints were brilliant, although the Bath defence was terrible. I think that amazing bit of footwork from Finn kept you in the game. Credit goes to you for keeping on plugging away. The changes saints had to make up front in the first half really told later in the game. I also felt the introduction of Alfie really made a difference for you, you're really going to miss him next year!!
The second half was a much tighter affair, I was surprised how little saints offered though. Alfie should have got a yellow for his tackle on Pollock, but then I think even the most one eyed Bath fan probably recognises that! With any tackle above the horizontal if you bring them down on the back it's a yellow and on the head a red. As the game wore on though the strength of your bench told again.
It always looked like you'd pull it off. The controversial yellow on Pollock seemed harsh to me although as someone above stated he got away with one earlier. Did that affect the final result, we'll never know. Saints fans who watched on TV will have heard the comms team stating that decision was wrong.adding to there sense of injustice.
Speaking of the tv coverage, I will never again complain about TNT, even Austin Healy!! The constant over excited commentary and babblings of Andy Goode spoilt the game for me. In comparison TNTs coverage just looks amazing.

Finally, and you won't need telling this. If you want to beat one of the French teams you'll have to improve your defence, and at least have a functioning line out! No way could you give ST or UBB a start like that. They have the bench power to match yours and will not fade away as saints did.

Well done though to both teams for a great game.

In the cold light of day we need to consider a few things. Even allowing how sharp Saints were at the start our defence should have been far more engaged. That has happened too often & we have to tighten up massively. The lineup is not usually poor so hopefully that can be addressed though I wish we had signed a monster lock for next season. Perhaps we had to let Alfie go but having a more conventional no8 like Du Preez seems like a step backwards. Maybe JgG has made one of his very rare mistakes.

I’m sure there are a few Saints supporters who wished they had slept on it before jumping on their keyboards last night.

What a game first and foremost and well done for not capitulating and keeping yourselves close to strike at the end. Some may enjoy keep the ball under the jumper kind of stuff, but that’s how I enjoy my rugby.

You’ve got a big job ahead of you, both French sides are incredible and it’ll take another huge effort to get the better of them. We’ve tried against Bordeaux a few times now but have never had enough of our top players available to really take it to them.

Hopefully Europe will keep you distracted and allow us to sneak the Premiership this year!!

Again, congratulations. I’m proud of my home town and I’m equally sure you’re extremely proud of your own side.

Saints fan in peace.

A few salty comments from our fans when a nights sleep and a more magnanimous response might have been more in keeping with your average Saintly supporter.

I think a lot of the frustration being aired is that it seems like a game we let slip through our fingers after an unbelievable first 30mins. Credit your boys for keeping it close in a first half when many teams heads would have gone down, and your coaching team for changing things up in the second half and not allowing Saints to continue playing to their strengths.

You can’t blame refereeing decisions for that loss and in a game of small margins two things stand out as game changers from a Saints perspective for me. Smith’s missed kick to touch just before half time and being run back through the phases for a try to narrow the halftime scoreline, and the otherwise excellent McParland taking a tap and go when a kick at goal would have given us a 15 point cushion in the second half. This is where you question our game management and execution not blame a referee’s decisions for your undoing.

Best of luck for the rest of the competition. For those travelling then see you at Franklins Garden in a couple of weeks time for what hopefully will be another cracking installment in this season’s rivalry. COYS.

Great game to watch for the neutral. The referee didn't have a great game and I think he was itching to send Pollock off all game and when he finally saw his opportunity to do it he got the call horrifically wrong. The Bath midfield were torn apart which should be your main concern - the Bordeaux centres will have a field day. Lawrence had been found out, he doesn't work hard enough and his defence is very average.

Fin Russell creates so much but he also gets you out of so much trouble, he's an incredible player. You need to move Spencer on, I'm amazed Brace didn't penalise him for dissent, but Spencer is the wrong 9 for the way Bath want to play. You also need a new hooker.

A difficult result for Saints fans to swallow I imagine, they were very unlucky with some of the referee calls. In a tight game it makes a huge difference and it's very easy to imagine a different result with a different ref.

Good luck in the next round, keep Russell in cotton wool as you have no chance without him.

It's really unfortunate that referring decisions have become the talking point of the match. Personally I thought they evened out. Yes, Barbeary could have easily got a YC for the dangerous clear out. Santi did probably seal off, but then Pollock wasn't convincingly supporting his bodyweight to start with and had just knocked on a few minutes prior in a very similar situation which comms thought should have been a penalty to Bath.

Furthermore I was surprised at how quickly they glossed over Pollock's first try, where the Bath player was cleared out creating the space, yet Brace said tackle wasn't complete. And the high tackle on Dunn which lead to the turn over and they score off of it.

JVG needs to get a handle on set piece, for all the talk about how Saints were going to struggle at scrum time with absentees, I'd say it was fairly evenly contested. The lineout was a shambles, worrisome given that they had less jumpers than us. And we've been shaky on restarts all season. Got a month to address these before the semi-final.

Guy Pepper was immense. Finn had a good game. Kepu is one hell of a talent. And are we sure we can't keep Barbeary??

Pollock was everywhere to be fair, he looks like a world class player in the making.

Thinking ahead, we have two rounds of Prem before the semi, Quins & Saints. Then Exeter & Newcastle after the semi. I wonder if we will see some of the first choice players rested for the next two rounds of Prem and unleashed for the semi & Exeter? We don’t need to beat Saints to stay in the top two and one would hope a rotated team could compete well with Quins & Newcastle. Maybe it all depends on who and where the semi is…

2. We have a new hooker, you may have noticed him at the end
3. We definitely need to improve our lineout

Dcsh, It’s a good question and one that I’ll look at in a bit more depth when I write the preview for the Quins game when we know all this weekend’s results. I won’t “preview my preview” but my instinct at the moment is that we’ve got to bank the 5 points against Quins who have little left to play for except their ranking for next year’s Euro competitions and are therefore dangerous. Some rotation will happen but it’s a potential banana skin on our way to a home semi.

JVG always go strong at home, so maybe a few changes. Frost, Richards, Bayliss, JC, Ojomoh. Hopefully Donoghue!

Then lots of rotation against Saints.

If we win our remaining home games, and one away it should be enough to see us in the top 2. Though I'm sure Tigers and Exeter will close the gap during this run in.

Besides Spencer and Finn Russell, a lot of the Bath players have had far fewer minutes than the others. So expect that they can be pushed a bit harder during this period.

I know it's risky in terms of potential injuries, but I would like to see us go full bore against Saints away and play the exact same team we'd play a week later in the semi.

It's not surprising to me that the lineout is shaky and the backline doesn't always feel coherent when there is so much chopping and changing every week.

This would be a good tune up for the semi and if we could win at Saints it would reduce the chance of the final home game of the season being 'winner takes all' with Leicester.

Strong (with usual rotation) Vs Quins and bank the 5. Saints and Ex will be beating each other up at the time. Rest and rotate at Saints.

It's essential we get the 5 against Quins. Strong rotation is inevitable but maybe a bomb squad bench for a bit of insurance.

Views from neutrals always interesting.

Hard to agree re spencer but certainly fascinating view on it and we are all undoubtedly biased.

Agree that lawrence has been out of nick all season.

Could be an argument to revert to the pairing that won us trophies last season in redpath and mojo. Hopefully Ollie comes good, on form I think he is class.

100% agree - no one gave them a chance against bris and they pulled a class win out the bag.

Find it interesting how people talk about going full bore and our best team on paper etc.

Feels way more complex than that and jvg and his team are the only ones with a barometer on what the squad and individuals need.

I think it's far more important playing fresh, motivated players with points to prove than whether they may or may not get into a theoretical prem final 15.

People were quite vocal about the sale away selection and many gave us no chance but a lot of those picks were guys probably in a better physical and mental place than some of their more illustrious clubmates imho.

I would trust the squad and make changes for both quins and saints. You lose nothing in a lot of positions- could name any 3 of about 8 in the backrow, any 2 of about 5 in the centre, any 3 of about 6 in the back 3 and they won't let you down. Prop and halfback selections more interesting.

Imagine beno and underhill will be out so some forced rotation there....

We are going it bit off thread here so back to the Saints game. I know fans like to speculate pre match on team selection, I don't as I have no idea what goes on at Farleigh nor what is in JVG's mind so I never post my opinions on team selection pre match. Ultimately the selection for Saints worked though not without some degree of anxiety as Saints ran us ragged in the first half. Buoyed by the replacements they stepped up and played their part in an astonishing recovery. I won't speculate on the team for Quins but I hope there isn't too many changes. The selection for Sale worried me but it worked out well so the depth of talent is this squad can be trusted should JVG rest many.

We are losing TDT & Alfie B, the former gets a potm for one half v Sarries (amongst others?) the latter has had 3 in 4 big cup games this year. These two have rescued games we were losing and I can't see their departure being anything other than detrimental at the moment. We need to make the most of them this season so I'd pick them to start hereafter.

Getting MotM performances from players who should have been red or yellow carded in "finals" games is becoming something of a thing for you. Whether that can be coached or relied on I'm not sure though.

It was a great game to watch and you got yourselves back in the game brilliantly but Saints absolutely "Braced" with one inexplicably not-given yellow and one invented in the last ten minutes.

It is amazing that middle aged men get so wound up by a teenage rugby player. In terms of the match, you had home advantage and the game hinged on the Pollock yellow, which should have been a penalty the other way. A very lucky win.

Stay classy.

The multiple gripes about the game being at the rec are just odd.

Not a gripe at all. You had the home advantage but needed a terrible refereeing decision to get the win.

Paul, our last 5 euro games coincidentally reffed by Mr Brace 4 of which were at home we lost, one in particular (2018 Toulouse) that rubs should have seen 2 players given red cards both for shoulder to head tackles, Kaino given yellow on field cited and a 5 week ban, Pointud no sanction on field 4 week ban. Brace was poor for both sides yesterday, ignored a clear trip at least two high tackles and several ruck offences.

The forensic examination of every controversial action from disappointed losers or those who have a dislike for Bath are quite tiresome. Brace attracted a lot of criticism with some decisions or lack of action. Those watching on tv have an advantage over us at the game and if they want to spout sour grapes so be it but it is a sad way to detract from a incredible match. Watching it from my seat in the east stand I was angered by some of his decisions but in the main I thought he was fair to both sides. Lets celebrate an outstandingly entertaining game of rugby from the best teams in England not dwell on points scoring. Bath deserved that win for not giving up, Saints lost because they couldn't maintain their superiority in the second half and McParlands tap penalty should be considered a massive mistake that cost them.

Anybody who knows anything about rugby knows that you need to score enough points to take a single refereeing decision out of the equation.

And you should never fall into the trap of thinking a single incident in the last few minutes of a game is the deciding factor.

For instance, tackles off the ball on Underhill and Russell were missed for Pollock's opening try, which should have been disallowed. If it had been chalked off Bath would have been leading 36-34 when Pollock saw yellow.

Of course it's upsetting when you lose a close game and it's natural to look for simple explanations like McPartland's tap and go or Pollock getting sin binned, but the real reason Saints lost is because they ran out of steam in the second half and only scored six points.

Saints also benefited from Brace’s casual approach to interpretation.

In addition to the offences that enabled Pollock’s try, the turnover from a chargedown that brought a later try was preceded by 2 unchecked high tackles by Northampton & for me Dingwall had clearly overrun Freeman when he took his scoring pass.

That’s 21 disputable points in the first half that Brace’s Franklin’s Gardens critics overlook.

I don’t really understand what fans who consistently jump straight to refereeing discussions after a game really want from rugby to be honest.

Aside from it being a joyless way to view a sport current refs are on a permanent knife edge balancing laws, law interpretation, consistency, communication, empathy etc and last night all this was happening at a more frantic pace than usual.

Accusing him or any ref of deciding the result makes no logical sense to me. There’s endless things a ref could blow or not blow for throughout a game so it’s always possible to make an argument one team has been hard done by. Sure I’ve been guilty of that in the past too of course

The margin of 21 points looked like a mountain until the Arundell try and then the try before half time reducing the margin to 9 points. I was all ready for a long night at the 21 point margin but at HT I thought we are still in this.

Our line outs were a shambles and I don’t think it is all the hookers fault but perhaps leadership or communication issues and limited variation from the jumpers! We were not at our best but the fact we can grind out a result is very heartening despite being off song. Saints were superb with the quick service from McParland (when Mitchell came on I didn’t think they were as slick). Their off loading and running lines were mouthwatering. Where did that go in the second half?

Our game plan of sending on the bomb squad seems to be the answer but means containment of any deficit at half time essential.

Lovely night! Throat quite rough today!

For all those saying Brace favoured us, there were 3 times Saints played the ball from offside positions following tap downs or knock ons, and none were penalised. Not to mention the couple of clear high shots that weren't picked up.
For every decision that went our way, Saints got their share.

We utterly dominated them in the second half from what I saw. Not sure how we hung in during the first half.

The media took it and ran with it and it is a 'narrative' but Pollock clearly did not release and the ref warned him.

Yes, Carreras probably went off his feet but that is not uncommon at ruck time (rarely penalised), does not excuse other illegality and, some may note, Exeter exploited the tactic successfully for many seasons.

Is there some sort of restriction on disgruntled Saints fans moaning about the ref on their own forum? It's been 2 days now and still they come to antagonise.

Some decisions went against us in the first-half and in the second half against you. It's happened before and will happen again. Refs are human. As has been stated, this is how sport works.

Love the way Saints play and got massive respect for their set up, but some (definitely not all) of the comments on here are in poor taste.

In the cold light of day, perhaps look at Friday night in a broader context. Many people now have Saints as firm favourites for the PREM - including myself and other Bath fans - so take a leaf out of Dowson's book. His post-match presser was classy and gracious in defeat.

As an aside, also wanted to say that McParland must be close to an England call up. Every time I've watched him I come away impressed. Yes, decision to tap and go questionable - but he's 21!

With Quirke's injury record, Spenny's age and JvP flattering to deceive, I think two Northampton 9s in a matchday 23 isn't far off.

I’m another fan of mcparland. Would prefer to see him pushed as much as possible to see if he can make the next RWC than the other options (such as Randall). Quirke has a huge season ahead of him at Newcastle, it’s his for the taking if he can stay fit.

McParland is class.

On the 'obvious sealing off' I'm watching Benetton Vs Ex and it's honestly the same at every ruck at the moment. It's the same as some refs never giving holding on pens. All you want is consistency at the ruck and Brace was consistent on that. He was also then consistent on penalty against Pollock - he'd told him to take his hands off and he didn't same as FvW - and consistent on the yellow card - in the 22 after a linebreak like Reid's was 72 mins earlier.

Completely agree hasta.

It’s also an interesting byproduct of the Pollock obsession- a 50/50 call, that happen countless times a game, is given this level of obsession. If Chick or Prowse is carded, I think the incident gets a fraction of the analysis and Santi’s sealing gets barely a mention.

Not that they need one, as they were absolutely fantastic, but interesting how Pollock’s profile almost gives Saints “an excuse”. Less analysis done of how we won/they lost. I don’t mean that disrespectfully- it’s just a fact (probably) that the incident is being talked about this much because it involves Pollock.

I have just watched the whole game live on You Tube.

Obviously having read this whole thread in detail I was waiting and expecting the most desperate refereeing decisions.

I have to say I saw nothing in the match that we don't see for and against Bath in all matches all season.

Obviously Saints were upset because they though they had it won on 25 minutes. Whilst they were excellent in that period they certainly had some good fortune and they took their opportunities in a clinical manner.

However second half was largely Bath and passes that had been bouncing off Bath players went to hand. I don't know the possession and territory stats in the second half but it felt like Bath were dominant.

Obviously a great match for the neutral great for Bath and Saints for 25 minutes. There's was the first 25 minutes and ours the last 25 minutes.

Can’t believe McParland is the same player who played in the A game against NZ. Obviously a scratch team and wouldn’t write anyone off on the basis of one appearance but he’s gone from out of his depth and hooked early then to looking completely at home now

Couldn’t watch the game but have now listened to the radio commentary - from BBC Radio Northampton. A good way to get a different view on the game. No sense it was in the bag after 25 mins then almost a feeling it was inevitably rolling away as the game wound on. They were disappointed to lose but said what a great advert for rugby. Felt (after several reviews) the double tackle on Pollock was penalty only (just) and there were no complaints about the Saints yellows in 2nd half.

Yes that tallies with my view of the match having watched it back. Saints scored 5 tries in the first half & we scored 4. Big deal. We were well in the game. Much of the second half was even but we were well on top for the final quarter as we so often are. Braces’s refereeing seemed perfectly fair. Personally I never blame referees anyway. As for Barthboy making them firm favourites for the Prem I don’t get it. We play different styles of play but are incredibly even. It could go either way. However, I fear that Bordeaux might have too much for us as they did for Saints.

I was on a WA chat on Friday with friends who are mainly glos fans, they were of the opinion that Bath were getting stuffed at half time. I said that I thought we would win the second half. I had it in my head that we usually win games in the second half, perhaps this aligns with the bomb squad theory however i just asked AI and its not the case.

No, I think we've been fairly consistent in winning the second half.

Forget the prem cup fixtures.

Gloucester we won the second half 11 - 5. (Bath scores on the left)
Saracens (prem) 31 - 0.
Sale 24 - 7.
Saracens (europe) 31 - 12
Saints: 17 - 6

In round 9 we lost the second half against Chiefs but still won the game 9 - 12 (final score 33-26). That was after their winger got a red card in the first 10 minutes and we scored the BP, and sat back as they got themselves back into the game.

It might be the recency bias of Sale/Sarries/Saints ... feels like the bomb squad (well, Thomas in reality) have had to intervene earlier in these must-win games.

I wonder if that is because teams know they can't win the last 20 minutes against us and therefore run strike plays earlier than they might normally do against other sides?

Regarding McParland, maybe shows what a run of games with the big boys can do for you trc. His confidence, at Northampton, looks to be sky high - whereas for England B he was like a rabbit in the headlights. Lets hope so, would auger well for our back up scrumhalves.

England seem to be mirroring professional-era Bath in unearthing promising scrum-halves who, for whatever reason, don't kick on.

That's one of two things that's a real head in hands for me

The second is what seems a constant disire not to get possession from a restart whether receiving or kicking off

I could barely watch the last minute of the Saints game. I had vivid nightmare vision of conceding possession from ko and then a very kickable pen 40 metres in front of posts

Amazingly we got it, kept it and managed a whole minute without error

The way we managed the last 90 seconds was incredible. Just like the end of the PREM final, we were calm, knew our process, and kept our focus. Once we'd got the line out won and the maul to deck (Brace shouted "ball available" phew!), the technique of inviting the contact rather than initiating it clearly makes the ruck more easy to service and stay legal. We were really in control for that period- unlike me in the stands, who couldn't watch!

I always wonder- if you're Saints in that situation, you're knackered, but isn't it better to fly everyone into the ruck, do anything, initiate a 10 man counter ruck. Or even run claim "it's out", run around and pick the ball up, give a penalty, maybe a YC, but force another restart and line out. As said, we managed it super well, and they're out on their feet, but I was surprised that Saints didn't disrupt us more, or more teams (us included) don't cause more disruption during these end of game periods.

All of that takes time though which would be their problem. Better to just just try and turn it over or hope that Bath supporting players go off their feet or someone knocks on or illegally clears out etc. I would think. If that had happened (i.e. pen against Bath) then Saints were kicking at the post for the Semi final.

Having rewatched the game without the raw emotion of watching it live, my thoughts have evolved a little.

Although it felt like we were in shock in the first 20 minutes, we actually looked really calm and kept our focus. We were actually in control for the majority of the game (borne out by winning the final hour 36-13) and dominated the second half. The way we managed that final minute show how composed we were.

Although much has been made of Pollock's yellow, I'm not convinced it would have changed the game if Santi had been pinged instead. We were only five points behind and there was a feeling of inevitability about us getting over the line at that point.

In fact, it was very similar to the game at Franklin Gardens last January, when Saints blitzed us at the start, we got back into it and then only lost due to a last-minute penalty.

Whilst I'm a firm believer in that you make your own luck, 3 of Saint's tries were essentially undefendable.

Pollock's try, Russell was taken off the ball creating the space. I'm really surprised that Spencer didn't make more of an issue about this. They had a penalty advantage, I strongly suspect that they would have scored eventually but still...

https://i.ibb.co/DD8yYKqp/image.png

Dingwall's try was a superb bit of skill from McParland, 9 times of out 10 that ball goes to ground and Redpath was right to rush up.

Finally their 4th try from Kemeny, Russel thinks they've got penalty advantage from the high tackle kicks the ball through. Finn Smith collects, kicks and it's partly charged down, Saints regather and score. What's the likelihood that it wasn't called back for a penalty, it's charged down and then it ricochets into the opposition's hands.

For balance, Bath got lucky with Russell's try from the lineout over throw, and we were fortunate with the two key decisions - no YC for Barbeary and YC for Pollock. Though the latter was always coming, Saint's had been under pressure in their 22 for a while by that point and were toeing the line.

This may be a case of me being a one eyed fan, but the whole "touched kick puts everyone onside" thing hardly ever happens, but when it does it always seems to be against us! There was this one at Welford Road 3 years ago that couldn't have worked out any better for TIgers (watch from 6 minutes in).

Saints still needed to finish off the opportunity, but suddenly finding yourself with the ball deep behind the defensive line with support runners galore is the kind of scenario that's so difficult to manufacture organically.

I feel like we've been on the receiving end of more of these freak tries but struggling to remember what the games were, anyone else reckon we need to practice not getting fingertips on kicks in our training sessions?

There's also an element of fortune in Saints 5th try

I wouldn't call it undefendable by any stretch after Reid and Underhill missed their tackles, but Hutchinson doesn't bind onto Sleightholme and essentially just takes out Redpath's legs, meaning he hasn't got any leverage to stop the carry.

In a similar vein, Arundell may not have scored his try had Lawrence not slightly sent Dingwall off-balance...so many little moments that make a huge difference
