Team Summary:
The early times would see Vandoorne set a slow 1m:37.219 only to see Hartley
go quicker, 1m:36.358. Magnussen and Grosjean would go quicker with
Magnussen setting a 1m:35.986. With these initial times the Williams drivers
were now 7th and 8th. They would drop down the times to be 15th and 16th. At
the front it was now Verstappen quickest with a 1m:34.923, on the supersoft
tyre, followed by Raikkonen and Vettel. Vettel would go quickest with a
1m:34.647 as both Williams drivers continued to lap the circuit as they
dropped to 16th and 17th. Ricciardo would go third seeing Raikkonen fourth.
Neither Mercedes had set a time. But Hamilton would go fourth while Bottas
would set a 1m:34.156 to be quickest on the soft tyre.
After their first runs were completed the Williams drivers were 18th and
19th, again slowest of the field. Hamilton would set a new quickest time
with a 1m:33.915 on the supersoft tyre. He would improve with a 1m:33.582
followed by Bottas and Verstappen. After their first ultrasoft tyre laps the
Williams drivers were now 16th and 17th, a small improvement. The session
would be red flagged as a result of Perez's Force India stopping after his
left rear tyre would come off his car seeing him spin and his tyre fly off
down the track. His car would have to be recovered and removed on the back
of a truck. Prior to this Ricciardo was able to go quickest with a 1m:33.243
using the ultrasoft tyre.
The session would restart with under forty minutes remaining. For Bottas his
car would have an issue with his mechanics start to take his car apart.
Raikkonen would go second but Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:32.539,
followed now by Ricciardo, Raikkonen, and Vettel. Both Williams drivers were
back out on used ultrasoft tyres. Verstappen would improve to be third
behind his team-mate. Grosjean would improve to be sixth and Bottas seventh.
Bottas' issue was a coolant leak requiring some major work on his car. Both
Williams drivers would continue their runs on various tyres as no doubt they
worked through their tyre evaluations. With just over five minutes remaining
Hartley would be told to stop seeing the Virtual safety Car deployed.
It would be removed and the session would come to an end with both Williams
drivers remaining 17th and 18th. The top ten was Hamilton followed by
Ricciardo, Verstappen, Raikkonen, Vettel, Grosjean, Bottas, Alonso,
Magnussen and Gasly tenth. Another day of disappointment for the Williams
team with the rest of the weekend looking to be not much better.
Lance Stroll:
Lance would come out for the second session running on the soft tyre. Lance
would set a 1m:37.411 seeing him drop down to seventh. He would quickly drop
to be 15th. This would become 16th but with a 1m:37.166 he would improve one
place to be 15th. As he pitted he would be 16th after a nine lap run on the
supersoft tyre, this would become 18th. After a short stop he would return
running on the ultrasoft tyre. He would set a 1m:35.936 to now be 16th.
Lance had dropped down to 17th as he returned for a further run on used
ultrasoft tyres. Lance would also pit returning on used supersoft tyres.
Lance would say that the car really did not like these tyres meaning the
supersoft. Lance would show his frustrations in an exchange with his
engineer.
Sergey
Sirotkin:
Sergey would be out for Williams in the second Friday practice session,
running on the soft tyre. Sergey's first time was a 1m:37.802 to be eighth.
Sergey would also drop down the times to be 16th and again slowest. Sergey
would set a 1m:37.501 but would not improve and was now 18th. He would pit
now 19th and slowest again. Sergey's second run was also on the ultrasoft
tyre. Sergey would also improve but just one place with a 1m:35.970 to be
17th. Like his team-mate he would drop to now be 18th as he came back out
for a further run on used ultrasoft tyres. Sergey would pit after a short
run coming back out on used soft tyres. |
