FW44 with 2023 livery

With the launch of the 2023 livery the discussions now move to the Williams Racing 2023 challenger the FW45. After a disappointing 2022 Formula One season that saw the team finish last in the constructors’ championship so much of their 2023 fortunes will come down to the performance of the FW45.

It was announced by the team that the new FW45 would complete a shakedown at Silverstone on 13th February with another filming day planned in Bahrain prior to pre-season test in Bahrain commencing on the February 23rd.

Team driver Alex Albon has spoken of how the team is well aware of the issues that the 2022 FW44 had.

Alex said: "There were clear weaknesses in the car. It's not just me, also Nicky last year, Logan drove the car as well. There were pretty obvious weaknesses in the car.

“I can say that low speed front-locking was quite a big problem for us last year, and we're trying to get around that and understand why it was so difficult. So areas like that there's a common goal to improve the car.

“Everyone's involved in the development and trying to address the weaknesses we had.”

At the 2023 livery launch Williams Head of Vehicle Performance Dave Robson spoke of the specifics of what the team was attempting to achieve in trying to find how to improve the low-speed performance of the 2023 car.

Robson said: “The low speed, high downforce corners were certainly important to us in terms of how we spec the car out.

“I think a lot of that is about its characteristics and how the drivers can utilise the downforce it does have. We've done a lot of work on that. We set some targets.

“It's difficult to sort of put a lap time target on something like that, and therefore trading it against just basic downforce and drag can be difficult. But we think we set some good targets.

“We think we've seen some good progress when we take the aero map data from the wind tunnel and run it through the simulator with the drivers. But we'll have to see. We certainly need to make some improvements there and I'd like to think we've done just that.”

As for the question of whether the FW45 will carry over the design philosophy of the FW44 Robson said: “It’s philosophically an evolution. Obviously the regulation changes around the floor dominate some of it, and then I think the other thing that you’ll find that is most obvious is a bit of an update to the sidepod package, which is an evolution of what we did for the Silverstone upgrade package.

“We were a bit constrained then by the radiator layout and not wanting to completely change that. So we’ve had an opportunity to work on that and lay things out a little bit differently.

“They’re probably the main visible things. But, philosophically, it’s an evolution.”

As for the build of the FW45 Robson added: “The car build is in progress and it’s going well.

“Quite large chunks of the car’s systems have been tested independently, and now the whole car is coming together.

“In terms of the differences to the FW44, then the whole car is an evolution in terms of its physical appearance.

“There have obviously been changes to the regs but probably the most obvious change from last year is around the sidepod shape, which is something we started to focus on part way through last year with the Silverstone package.

“But we couldn’t do the changes we really wanted to, where the actual coolers were. Now we have an opportunity to rework that, so that’s probably the most obvious, visible difference.”

As to how much performance the team has been able to gain in the FW45, Robson added: “It’s difficult to know exactly how much because it really depends on how that stands up relative to everyone else.

“The floor regulation changes did set us back – it will set everyone back – but we’re quite pleased with how we have reacted to that.

“But overall, the car is a step forward. We’ve seen in the simulator that we’ve started to work quite well on some of the issues that were fairly stand out to the drivers last year.

“So we’re hopeful that will materialise on track and we will quite quickly turn that into lap time, so that’s all very promising.

“It’s been a big effort by everyone, a huge amount of effort throughout the company.

“Everything has gone pretty well in the wind tunnel, with CFD, and now the manufacturing team is just finishing off getting the car ready.

“So we’ll find out in a few weeks’ time, how much it’s all paid off.”

Nice to hear everything is positive in the wind tunnel. If that part is working, then Mercedes ( Yes, looking at you!) is to blame if we are dead last in the field.

Oh, here we go again Peter De Bell End! Mercedes is not to blame for Williams performance…as simple as that! Get it into your head that we get the same engines and gearboxes as Aston Martin from Mercedes. They supply us as per the contract we have agreed with them.

If we enter the season and by any slim chance we're going to have 7th or 8th best car (which is a remarkable jump considering our last 5seasons), it would leave a bittersweet taste for me tbh.
Knowing the fact that anything we would see in first half of the season is the result of Capito-FX efforts, then we throw away FX without even seeing his first proper design wouldn't be great tbh.
I still believe the guy just needed more time in the team and F1.His career status doesn't lie.His knowledge with ground effect was very well known and up to date....so I wonder if that was a right choice to get rid pf him or not.specially when there's no replacement announced yet.

Despite FX being knowledgeable about the infrastructure and aerodynamics, he was still a rookie in f1 engineering. You can understand why the other engineers didn't appreciate him and his knowledge as he had no relevant f1 experience.

Indeed you could. Hadn't thought of it from that perspective, the friction reported within the team that is. Hopefully everybody gets behind James then.

.
If we make some progress of course and we get a couple of points here and there, sure and why not?

Hopefully he can address some of our TOO MANY problems, we ALWAYS seems to have and McLaren, even Haas and Alfa Romeo does not have. If they are having problems, they seems to be fixing them during season. We seems to struggle all year when we have problems getting enough points.

Paddy Lowe was a disaster, but he seems to have luck in his personal life having a 20 y.o. younger russian wife. Hopefully we chosen a better and more capable man this time in James.

A lot of people have some pointscoring success in F1 with bigger teams, and then they join us..

guys , Peterdebel is just playing us... They harp on with the same insane comments but when pulled up don't react.. Probably laughing every time someone gets angry at them. Just ignore, I do...

An evolved modern troll? Put seasoned posters off the scent by not trolling exclusively or obviously, hide behind a smokescreen of goodwill but still bait repeatedly for maximum reaction. If so, then very smart, though its an even bigger waste of their time and everyone else's.

No answer as to why they support williams but want the team to sell to a manufacturer or be given everything from a manufacturer or blame everything on a manufacturer... I agree its subtle trolling. The reaction is the end. Its not about having a discussion.

Just stop blaming Mercedes, don’t demand too much from the team…accept we are 8-10th team in terms of budget and modern infrastructure and to outperform that will take time.

And stop slagging Red Bull off. That owner / sponsor has invested heavily in F1 for over 20 years and deserves respect.

If Peter you don’t like the response from us here, there is the Autosport or F1 technical forums to join, or join tinder and get dating.

The reaction is, I believe exactly what he wants. Its a fine line though between acting as a useful foil for posters to provide great content in response, and spamming the forum up with nonsense. Still, it stops the forum being dead quiet.

I just want us to be better and, WITH OUR BUDGET, we should not be where we're are.

We have a name in the history of F1, a name you thought big
moneyspenders would be glad to help back on track, but it seems they are hard to attract.
Money>better facilities> better car and aero>Results aiming for Top 10-15 every race.

But its nice to know that FW45 has gone more hours in wind tunnel than the cheaters from Redbull.

Chance to see the outcome on track: Zero.

Nice one, FIA.

As said before: Hopefully we can compete with Alpha Thauri and Hass during spring and summer and our updates will send 'em crying as we leapfrog them in the standing when the winter sets in.

Just keep her rolling, without too many DNF il the first couple of races.

Totally agree with the view that we should not be expecting too much from the team.

I have a list of things I would be happy to see the team achieve and one of them is to see us regularly take on the midfield teams. This may see us still finish again 10th but if we can turn things around to be regular Q2 qualifiers and to regularly score points I will be quite happy.

The odd thing is, albon was a regular q2 qualifier last year and regularly challenged for points. Rare was the day he wasn't somewhere between 9th and 12th. The issue was, it was only albon who was able to do this. Furthermore, such was the competitiveness of the field, that peaking with a competitive midfield drive to 9th wasn't enough to keep williams from finishing last in the constructors championship because our rivals regularly had very successful days, ie double points finishes in 6th/7th.

I'm not sure whether 2022 was an anomaly or the norm. The front runners were fairly consistent in their performance, it was more a case that the lower midfield often really got their act together. If this is a sign of the times then williams need to do better than regularly competing in the midfield, they need to start succeeding, ie occasional q3s and strong runs to mid level points positions. If monza is still their best track then they can't afford for their drivers to have appendix operations and cheer a p9 from a sub, they need to bang in a 6th and 7th at the very least just to stay in the hunt if they don't want to finish last in the championship because their rivals are too competitive.

Another issue is, whilst Sargeant looks a decent move in the right direction, he's a rookie and a young one. He's not a de vries with decades of experience and a million championships under his belt. He will take time, he will be inconsistent and he will make errors. Steiner upped the stakes by taking on hulkenberg, so the fight for not finishing last has never been so hard.

It will be tough. A competitive last is quite likely.

Agree Crusty we need consistent points finished buy Albion to show progress and odd points finish from Sargent to show good progress not just knocking on the door of points finish

Crusty makes a Good point and can i just add we only had one car really capable of points last year. Most other teams have 2 cars capable of points. This leave us struggling as we can never use car 2 to protect car 1 or have any influence on the race. 😒 Lets just hope Sargent has more pace than Latifi come race day and can battle more. If he cant , we are still basically a one car team.

Yes agreed we only had one car for the last few years.

Lets hope The new kid can get up to speed and get in the mix.

No idea how hard Williams would of pushed on the design of this years car but Capito
did say he would not play it safe when it came down to pushing the design limits.

Stuart. This video was posted on Youtube yesterday so thought I'd post it here. Hopefully it will allay and fears you have about Sargeant. I'll be happy if he's better than Lance Stroll was in his first race for us. God do you all remember that race?. The guy couldn't even hold the steering wheel straight.

Every year since say 2015 we’ve talked about addressing the weaknesses apart from maybe 2020 when we admitted we designed a peaky car. Every year we’ve not really seen the results so I really do hope we see some improvements. If we do though, then it’s odd we got rid of FX.

Agree on the driver issues though, Bottas / Massa, if one failed we always had another up there. With the increase in funding teams are getting there aren’t really pay drivers in F1 now so all the teams have stronger driver lineups. AT and Alfa probably have the only lineups with some hint of weakness so we need to Hope Sargeant is the real deal.

As it is said in another thread, its a bit strange as both Capito and FX has been fired for not delivering whats expected for a team like us, but they both were finish working on FW45,

Vowles just come in and isn't responsible for anything yet.

But if FW45 is another donkey, slow in corners and massive tyrewear, we have NO ONE to point fingers at, because those responsible have left the building.

Strange situation to be in.

Maybe James tell the designers/aeropeople to try to update the FW45 the best possible way.
