Sitting Out First Test "No Gamble" Says Horner

Christian Horner is confident that Red Bull are on track to take the title fight to its rivals, even if the launch of the RB6 is behind that of its main competitors.
Speaking to Reuters, the Red Bull Racing Team Principal said
"The main thinking was, as we did last year, to give Adrian (Newey) and our designers as much research and development time as possible"
"It's a better strategy to maximise development time. It served us well in 2009 and with two tests in Jerez and one in Barcelona, we feel that is sufficient preparation for the season."
"It's an aggressive approach but, as you've seen, the reliability of the current cars is extremely high and last year I think on the first day of RB5 we did 90 laps in Jerez and have similar high targets for this year, so I don't think there is any gamble."
Christian Horner went on to say that the RB6 is on schedule, and whilst keeping any eye on the launch and progress of the other cars, the focus of Red Bull is very much on the teams own performance and development - and as such "I'd be more than happy for others to have the headlines at the moment."

One line did suprise me i must admit.

Is this normal to only have passed half the crash test this close to the car hitting the track or is the reason why we are not at the first test because they have dropped a clanger and are trying to get over it??????

that riding a fine line as far as i'm concerned. on the up side they don't have to worry about testing the engines so much as the renault team had done quite a few laps...

It isnt a gamble unless the car has reliability issues and is stuck in the garage for most of the tests. Will you guys be awarded another chance to test or will you just have the remaining sessions?

He says its on schedule, maybe half the tests can be done easily in a couple of days.

Or perhaps they are attempting to show their hand as late as possible, as isn't it the crash structure that they have been using to create the diffusers??
I imagine that the teams might have a few (POINTS TO FERRARI) informers in the FIA, and the later they show these rear crash elements the better...

There'd be no point in doing the crash tests at the same time as everyone else and then not go to the first test.

You would think they would do it for the sake of giving themselves breathing space for any changes. It would be the smartest most sensible thing to do, unless what I said was true.

That would indicate that their is no need to complete all crash tests before testing commences, so the fact that only half the tests have been completed, doesn't necessarily put us behind anyone else as we don't know how many crash tests they have passed.

Spot on, there is no obligation for teams to have passed the crash tests at any point prior to scrutineering at the first race, which is the Thursday of Round 1.
In fact, there is no obligation for the teams to run their car to ANY legality at the tests...they could run V12's with 25sq ft rear wings, 8 wheels and total weight of 50kg if they wanted too...but would, of course, be pointless...
This is why testing can sometimes be misleading...

That's ok, 3 tests before the opening gp he says. You'd think first test is just troubleshooting anyway, make sure the wheels turn, etc.

I don't see a problem for Red Bull at the Jerez test, it may not even rain at all and if it does i doubt it will rain for the whole test!
