McCarthy Starts With A Win

MICK McCarthy's first game in charge of Wolverhampton Wanderers ended in a win. Goals in either half from Kevin O'Connor and Brazilian Gui Finkler earned McCarthy a 2-0 win in his first attempt.

Mick McCarthy's first signing as Wolves manager scored a 22 yard curler in the second half at Crewe Alexandra tonight as Wolves won just their second game of this summers pre-season programme.

Gui Finkler - who signed on loan from Brazilian top flight side Juventude - came on as a half time substitute and scored a wonderful 22 yard curling effort past Ben Williams in the Crewe goal.

Finklers goal was the second from the visitors after Martin O'Connor's 25 yard screamer had put Wolves ahead in first half stoppage time.

O'Connor was part of a very young midfield with Daniel Jones, Kevin O'Connor, Mark Davies and Rohan Rickets all starting in a flat midfield four. Carl Cort and Thomasz Frankowski both started the game in attack but both were replaced at half time. Matt Murray started in goal with a back four of Gary Breen, Jody Craddock, Mark Clyde and trialist Jamie Clapham.

Clapham was replaced late on by Martin Riley but McCarthy will have been impressed with his steady performance.

Wolves host Aston Villa at home on Saturday in the final pre-season game before the season kicks off away at Plymouth Argyle a week later.
