In an entertaining match tonight, Wolves beat an impressive Accrington Stanley side 3-2 after extra time, thanks to Chris Iwelumo’s first goals for the club on his full debut, and Mark Davies grabbing the winner after a prolonged first team absence.
In a lacklustre performance, lacking in both invention and guile from the starting eleven, it was down to two substitutes to change the match, with Andy Keogh setting up Iwelumo for the equaliser, before an out swinging Davies corner set up Iwelumo’s second and Davies himself sliding in the winner.
So, what went wrong tonight? The basic answers are the defence, midfield and attack, all poor tonight. Firstly, the defence- tonight was the third successive game where two goals have been conceded. Accrington’s opener followed the best passing move of the first half, resulting in on-loan Jamie Clarke wriggling free on the edge, before seeing his shot come back off the crossbar. With Hennessey already beaten, the ball fell to Paul Mullin to head in from just outside the box. The second was even worse- within two minutes of Wolves taking the lead, Ian Craney was slipped through on goal, and showed terrific strength to hold off Richard Stearman, before sliding his finish past the on-rushing Wayne Hennessey. Aside from these two goals, Accrington didn’t cause the Wolves defence too many problems, but just enough to cause worry lines on Mick McCarthy’s forehead.
Now for the middle bit- the midfield. To be honest, I thought we might have problems here right from the start. The selection of Iwelumo and Sam Vokes upfront suggested to me that we would attempt to get the ball wide, and whip balls in to the box. Did we do this? Michael Gray, a workaholic down the right but a natural left footer struggled to make enough space to put in really damaging crosses, more often than not, forced inside onto his left foot, a left foot which has seen better days. Down the other flank was youngster Dan Jones, a player many fans believe has not been given a fair crack of the whip. Today was his chance, and boy did he let it pass him by. Not blessed with the natural pace to beat his opponent, he relies on creating space and crossing the ball early. This, he failed to do, with his set-piece delivery being equally poor. On this evidence, albeit just 53 minutes of it, he will definitely struggle to push Stephen Ward and Matt Jarvis for a first team berth. And now, the central midfield- the engine room of the team, the driving force. Karl Henry is an excellent player when he plays the ball simply, not when he tries to spray the ball to the wings Xabi Alonso style. In a game that was crying out for someone to put their boot on the ball, and play a simple pass, Henry failed to do this. So too did his partner David Edwards, making his first appearance of the season. At no point tonight did he look like he has the required guile to be the central focus of Wolves attacking play. He made some good runs into opposition territory, but did not get near enough to the strikers when the ball was played long, resulting in Accrington easily regaining possession. In fact, of the players out there tonight, the one who looked the most likely to create chance was Kevin Foley. I’m sure this led to conversations about his potential to play in midfield, which he did on occasion last season. Tonight, he was the only player prepared to get the ball on the deck, and pass it.
Finally, the strikers. All four strikers were starved on chances, but the times when they had the ball, almost always picked the wrong option- choosing to pass the ball when 16 yards from goal, and late on, Ebanks-Blake choosing to go alone when a simple pass would surely have given Iwelumo a hat-trick on his full debut. Iwelumo deserved his goals- he worked hard, won plenty of flick-ons and generally held the ball up well. Sam Vokes worked hard, but the game passed him by to the extent that no one in the ground was surprised when he was replaced by Sylvain Ebanks-Blake. Andy Keogh remains an enigma- the footballing version of marmite. Personally, I think he is worth persevering with, if only due to his and SEB’s awesome goalscoring record in the latter stages of last season. He seemed to beat defences with ease, before panicking in front of goal. If he could get this side of his game sorted, he would be one of the best strikers outside the Premiership.
And finally, a word for Mark Davies. In his first competitive appearance since April 2007 (a late substitute for Michael Kightly), he slotted in excellently. In his corner for Iwelumo’s second, and his tidy finish for the eventual winner, he contributed more in his 21 minutes on the pitch than many of those who started.
Still, we are in the next round, the draw for which will be tomorrow, after Sky’s live game.

Very good report Tom.
As it's unlikely that we're going to win a cup competition I do like to see the fringe players getting competitive games. With only four/five first choice players starting though I think we need to cut them a bit of slack technically.
Glad to see it was another entertaining game. Last season the fans were crying out for more entertaining and attacking play and now it appears to be happening we're not happy about conceding. Oh well - the strive for perfection continues

Not sure how I feel about the game...at last some excitment and attacking football, that's what I want...but surely we should beat teams like this 4-0 etc.
Interesting note; MM said that 'They have a good keeper'..how good is he?? Was he that good that he made our defence leak two goals...sure we were unlucky not to score first half...but should we be giving goals away like that?

I knew this would be a hard game tonight.
Seven Championship clubs went out to lower league sides striving for some success in this competition.
Accrington Stanley aren't a bad side and are full of youth that are trying to impress. How many more times this year are these players going to have an opportunity to (A) play in such a big stadium and (
such a big club?

The problem is we're having to work damn hard to achieve it. Plymouth are one of the favourites to be relegated from the Championship and Accrington Stanley are League 2. McCarthy needs to get back to basics and dump the favouritism line.

To be fair, their keeper made one or two quality saves, mainly from headers from corners. Against a lesser keeper, we probably would have scored 5 or 6. Seems to be the story of the season so far...

Super little report Tom. Keogh/marmite analogy definitely has me on the lad's side now!
No idea what will happen at the next game but that's Wolves for you. 3-2 aet doesn't fill me with confidence though. Maybe Keogh/Iwelumo next up with Davies on the bench for an earlier start? Maybe the lad can complete his rehabilitation, stay fit and get back in the first team after all, which would be great to see.

Yes we stutterd to Victory but the main point is Victory. We won yet again fans just want to moan. We have not done well in this comp for years now and it is not looking like it will change.
There was some plus points as Stearman had a good game with some great tackles and would have scored had the defender not bring him down.
Iwelumo scored two great headers and its nice to see we can now attack at corners, A thing we have not been able to do for a long time.
Keogh came on and did well and set up our equaliser.
Elokobi is getting better and better and made some good runs down the wing which caused them a ot of trouble.
Our attacking powers was there to see in the second half and extra time and if not for there keeper could have been won in 90 mins.

Agree with all those points Badge, but I disagree about Stearman. Thought he looked pretty dodgey, looks to me very much like a right back playing at centre half.

Same old@#$%&it seems.... this season looks like being an action replay of last. Dont want to seem too pessamistic but if we lose to sheff weds on sat, we will already be 5 points off the lead and playing catch up. McCarthy isnt the man to take wolves forward....lets accept it.

While I agree we are all entitled to our opinion, let me suggest we start getting really critical after everyone's settled into the new season.....say 10-12 games or so. TRUST ME, I'LL BE THE 1ST TO HAVE A MOAN!

we scraped a draw at relegation favourites plymouth who i hasent to add lost to luton who are division 2 relegation certs,then we just about manage to scrape through against another relegation beckoned a.stanley.hardly inspiring.another depressing season awaints unless mcarthy is replaced soon.

Wednesday Lost To Rotherham at home, Charlton also crashed at home to Yeovil. 7 championship sides crashed out last night to lower league sides. Some other championship sides scraped through against lower league sides like we did. As AW said its too early.

I think the 32 point reduction has got something to do with Luton being favourites for relegation!
Can you imagine if Wolves had a 32 point reduction, there's some fans on here that'd be expecting a play off place at minimum!!!!

Plymouth may struggle this season however they will still be difficult to beat at home park. Thats where they get the majority of points. Last night was Accrington's Cup final and even though they are complete Dros ! they raised their game for us. So an away point at one of the most difficult grounds in the championship and a win in the early stage of the league cup is not too bad when you think about it.
WE MUST WIN THE MAJORITY OF GAMES AT HOME THIS SEASON THOUGH!!
Plymouth may struggle this season however they will still be difficult to beat at home park. Thats where they get the majority of points. Thats a great report Tom and wouldn't really disagre with anything you've said. I don't post on here very often and will only comment on matches that I have seen but I can't see the point in fans bickering with each other as on this thread. Surely the whole idea is that people have their say based on their own opinions to encourage discussion, everyone's opinion is valid whether you agree or not. If everyone agreed there would be no need for this message board. Anyhow, whinge over! Last nights game showed that areas need to be worked on and despite the fact we're only 2 games in, it's best to sort these things out rather than keep hoping and waiting until it's too late. The world and his dog can see that we need a decent centre half. Stearman looks like he has the capacity to improve but looks out of place at the moment and has a tendancy to lunge in. Collins just looked much the same as last season and defensively is a liability. Based on what we have at the club at the moment though, Craddock and Stearman are our best pairing. I was surprised that there was no sign of Jarvis yesterday and am fearing the worst for his chances under Mick. It was great to see Mark Davies and what an impact he made. If he could sort out his fitness we could have one hell of a player there. Jones I felt was a let down and doesn't look like he could have a great impact in a league game. Up front I thought Iwelumo had a great game but looked like he was starting to drift out a bit before his goal. On the whole we controlled the game but still struggled to look convincing. On Saturday I would like to see Jarvis return to the left with Davies on the bench to replace Henry if he has another stinker like last night. Up front, based on the first two games, we should be trying Iwelumo and SEB with Keough coming off the bench if need be.

Alkapone, only a couple of weeks ago you was whinging about everything from the lack of investment to S.Ward to Neill Collins. I mean didn't you say you was gonna boo Collins if he played a single game this season and chant McCarthy out if it happened?
Fast forward two weeks and you're sat on your high horse calling people pathetic for criticising. Carry on though, it adds to the comedy value - we'll have Robert Mugabe logging on next to campaign for fair democratic elections.

If you'd bothered to read my comments after the Neil Collins onslaught, you'd be clearer than your latest comments suggest i.e. I made those comments after 2 bottles of wine!
As for where I am now mate, we've obviously got him for another season whether we like it or not, so for once in our Wolves single minded lives, Can we collectively get behind him or at least give the side more than 2 effin games?!

You have a point there AAW.
But in terms of players like Collins & Ward, they could play well one week (yes they could lol) and the next week I could criticise them. In the past I've said Collins has made schoolboy errors but that won't stop me from saying he did well in another game.
I will even criticise Mick when I can find something worthy of it
But in terms of players like Collins & Ward, they could play well one week (yes they could lol) and the next week I could criticise them. In the past I've said Collins has made schoolboy errors but that won't stop me from saying he did well in another game.
I will even criticise Mick when I can find something worthy of it

I'm a big doubter of MM, but even I can see that 2 games including the Cup is way too early to judge this season.

Two games gone and we have an away draw and an home win, forget who the opposistion were, you can only play who is in front of you.
The only reason we havent gone up in the last 2 seasons is purely down to our lack of goals, now we have players who can put the ball in the net, so what if the defence has leaked a few goals, give them a few more games to gel then see what happens.
The transfer window dont close til end of this month, still plenty of time to sign someone if needs must, maybe increase the bid for Berre at Hearts.

Fair enough old wolf I agree players performance levels can alter one game to the next but Im sure you will agree that an overall perspective of a player over 100 games for example will illustrate how good he is, as any player can have some poor/exceptionally good games at any given time which isnt indicative of his true ability.Collins may have the odd decent game but taking a large number of matches into consideration the verdict would come back as bl**dy awful.I have a little sympathy with ward at times though he clearly lacks quality needed at a higher level.
Jamwolf you are right on 2 games not being enough this season but the jury came back at the end of last season with a guilty verdict for merlin,Its only a case of waiting for the death sentence(p45) to be passed Im afraid

In fact I am too a doubter. BUT he's our current manager in our current campaign, so whether I like it or not i've gotta get behind the bloke!

I wasnt referring to you specifically about "loving mick" but my general point is switching opinions constantly is irritating,if you did love mick then you are entitled to your opinion as I am mine but dont change it one week to the next based on the odd match!If we beat wednesday 6 nil on saturday,I would still think mick wasnt the man for the job however if we are around the top 2 come may then I could well "change my mind" but if what AT says about you changing each week then 
if not then fair play lol you have a conditional discharge from the court By the way have you had chance to check the bookies odds on your top 6 tip burnley yet?

so i take it your right behind gordon brown as he is our current prime minister,just because someone is playing for or managing wolves doesn't mean you have to back them or think they are wonderful,you have your view mate don't hide behind the "micks our boss so ive got to back him".

Alkapone, you're a bit like Chemical Ali, there you are complaining about being attacked and whinging about all the criticism, yet in the background on 50ft billboards are all your complaints about the team (from two weeks ago!!) and your "attacks" on anyone who complains.
