Liverpool 2-1 Wolves

 Despite a stirring second half fight back, Wolves slipped to a third successive defeat at Anfield. A Roger Johnson own goal set Liverpool on their way before Luis Suarez twisted and turned past Christophe Berra, beating the Scot twice before firing past Wayne Hennessey from a narrow angle. Half-time sub Steven Fletcher pulled a goal back early in the second half, but despite pressurising the Liverpool goal late on, the team from Merseyside held on for a precious three points.  

• Mick McCarthy made the change that most fans wanted, and switched to a 4-5-1 formation with Dave Edwards coming into the team. My initial thoughts were that I would have preferred the inclusion Adam Hammill and Nenad Milijas, but overall I was reasonably pleased with the line-up.

• If the switch to a five-man midfield was supposed to strengthen the defence, it failed. The biggest problem was the defensive line which Suarez broke time and time again, with significant ease. The pressurising up the field was not successful, and Liverpool's midfield, defence and even goalkeeper were able to find Suarez on a regular basis.

• I mentioned earlier that I prefer Hammill to Stephen Hunt in a 4-5-1 formation because he gives that extra cutting edge upfront, so important when playing with a solo striker. Hunt was poor again today and appears to have lost the yard of pace that a winger needs. His work rate makes him invaluable in a 4-4-2 formation, where the wide men play a slightly more disciplined role.

• Half-time saw a double substitution, with Matt Doherty and Fletcher introduced for Edwards and Richard Stearman who was given a torrid time by Stewart Downing in the first half. Whether it was the introduction of some more energy upfront, the change in formation or some good old fashioned tea cup throwing by McCarthy at halftime, the team looked completely revitalised and took the match to Liverpool.  

• Arguably the most important factor in the second half resurgence was the way Matt Jarvis started running at Martin Kelly. For a ten minute period, Kelly could not get near the England winger, culminating in a deserved booking for bringing down Jarvis. Unfortunately, after this, Liverpool started doubling up on their right flank, with Dirk Kuyt introduced, presumably to give Kelly a little more support on that flank.

• The previous incumbent on the right hand of midfield was Jordan Henderson. However, he didn't spend a huge amount of time there, preferring to play very narrowly. Considering Liverpool have a striker in Andy Carroll who thrives on crosses into the box, and given our own problems at left back, this seemed like a slight oversight by Kenny Dalglish.

• It also begs the question as to where Steven Gerrard plays when he returns to the starting lineup, as he surely will over the coming weeks. Given the solid partnership between Lucas Leiva and Adam, it would appear that the obvious choice would be to leave Henderson out. But, Gerrard would spend even less time on that flank than Henderson does, and given Liverpool's current lack of a fit and experienced right back, it would leave that flank horribly exposed.

• Kevin Friend had an interesting match. There were a number of strange decisions, and he was extremely happy to give yellow cards when not always necessary. The most bizarre decision was the yellow card to Lucas for seemingly nothing. He also cautioned Jamie O'Hara for a high boot, but failed to show the same penalty to Charlie Adam later in the match. He then failed even give a free kick when Fletcher almost took Martin Kelly's head off with an attempted overhead kick.

• Ronaldo (the original) at Old Trafford, Ronaldinho at the Bernabéu; sometimes, opposition players get applauded by fans after great performances. But today, Adlene Guedioura got a standing ovation as he entered the match as a second half sub. All four sides of Anfield stood to a man (and woman) and cheered his introduction. This surprised me, his goal against Millwall was good, but I didn't think it deserved that. Oh, some bloke called Gerrard was also subbed on at the same time, but I don't think that's relevant.
