Afternoon Ian.
I reckon Sako must be knackered after two games for Mali. Still it gives Jacobs a chance to prove himself at this level.

Afternoon ladies and gents, I'll be with you this afternoon, following it on WM. I think Henry must be gutted not to have made the team following his performance against Blackburn. Let's hope Jacobs sticks to his position and creates more potential headaches for Kenny.

Will be really interesting to see how good Saville is. While I've not been a huge fan of Evans and think Price is better,Evans can put in some really good long through passes. Will Saville stake his claim to a permanent slot ?

Hi Chesh
Think Jacobs should cope with this league fine. Pretty unlucky to find himself on the sidelines. If only our striking dept was as good as our midfield......
I'd like to see us a bit more upfield instead of sitting back so deep inviting trouble. However it does create a bit more space for a counter attack.

I think Saville is a bit more defensively-minded and capable than Evans, and I'm not knocking Lee. I'm sure he's going to develop into a fine all round footballer.

Sounds as though we are so far Dudley. Van La Parra made one good pas at beginning of the game and has done little since. Jacobs has had a good header but little else of note so far. In fairness they are stretching our defence at times.

Jackett needs questioning about todays substitutions..
2 wide men on for 2 wide men
Striker on for a striker.

The pattern of play, not the players needed changing. What we got was just more of the same.
We had loads of wasted possesion 1st half, 2nd half was woeful.

Clarke should never wear the shirt again.

I'll say it again but I don't think a new striker is the biggest urgency, the main problem we have is the attacking midfield position. We play good football up to a point but that link between the midfield and attack in central areas is poor. Edwards had a excellent end to last season in terms of goals but I think in general play, he's the weak link and that's the area of the pitch that needs to be improved.

i understand what your saying A.T about edwards but i dont agree with u about us not needing a new striker, weve only got dicko, clarke is utter garbage. also what ian said is true jacket just went for like for like with the two wingers and striker, if you can call him a striker, it dident change nothing. i would have started henry instead of jacobs

I agree with AT .A lack of creativity means strikers are feeding on scraps.Only six goals scored in six games.

We have made an excellent start ,with only two goals conceded -a fluke og and a pen,but there are some warning signs.

1 So far we are underperforming against the poorer sides.

2 Games after the international breaks could be tricky.Millwall away and forest at home are the next two.

3 We need to have more flexibilty ,4231 seems to work against the better teams. But why not play two strikers against sides like blackpool from the start.

4 Kj is no fool but he put all his striker eggs in the wood basket who is unlikely to come before next summer if at all. When it he became clear he didnt want to come and leicester didnt want him to leave we were left high and dry.Kjs public comments suggest a behind the scenes debate on this issue ,pressure is growing on morgan.

5. Jacobs for Edwards against Charlton ?

Decent strikers drop deeper engineering goal scoring situations for themselves rather than just standing around waiting for the proverbial tap in. To glibly state it's down to midfielders to create chances isn't strictly accurate as strikers should be more than capable of giving themselves some opportunities during one and a half hours of football. I can't really understand why anyone feels we are in more need of a " creative midfielder" than a striker when we have reasonable cover in that area and upfront have less cover than a nude nymphomaniac at orgy night. Are people seriously suggesting that the likes of Clarke, Maclindon could finish any sort of chance even if we brought in world class midfielders to " create them"? Obviously in an ideal world we would have a surplus of creative offensive midfielders but we don't operate in that bubble of fantasy so would prioritise two strikers when we have Van la parra , sako etc. If a team has a decent cohesion to it which we seem to have, then it will almost invariably always create chances but having Clarke on the end of the chances we will struggle to score unless it's from a set piece. Creating chances is an acquired artform but far easier to do than actually finish them off which is why decent goalscorers are in such demand and an absolute must for any team with aspirations of success.

On a grander scale at Chelsea, Costa was brought in to transform a team from winning nothing to favourites for the league and the lack of goals was why they ultimately failed. They could have signed as many creative players as they liked but a goal scorer is what ultimately makes the difference and will be the difference between us finishing mid table and pushing for promotion.. it's not exactly rocket science is it? No one is advocating spending umpteen millions but we have enough cash to bring in enough quality upfront to give ourselves realistic hopes of premiership football next season but have an owner unwilling to spend.

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread
Posted by: Arthur Tannen (IP Logged)
Date: 14/09/2014 12:55

Well Chelsea have also signed Fabregas who is top quality in the area of the pitch I think we need improve the most. In that advanced attacking midfield position I don't think there's many better so I'd say he's been just as important in taking Chelsea to the next level as Costa has.

Wolves play good football up to a point, but everything we do is built around getting the ball wide and getting crosses in, we very rarely play through the middle. Look at the Cardiff game, we were totally dominant in 2 thirds of the pitch but in the final third how many clear cut chanced did we create? 1 at the most. Yesterday was the same, nice football at times up until their box, then its get it wide where the wingers get their head down and just whip aimless balls into the box. You watch the best teams, their play is all engineered around the middle of the pitch, getting their creative players in central areas in the final third, then he'll play balls between the full back and centre back to get the wide players in behind who'll then pass the ball in the box rather than just aimless whip a ball to the back post.

Of course we need a striker though, Clarke is a totally donkey and I'm sure McAlinden is just brought along to games to get him out the house, he's clearly never going to play. But I still think Dicko would score goals regularly at this level with improved service, it's not like he misses chance after chance every game is it? No one does as we hardly create anything. We don't all come away from games thinking about all the chances we've created and missed do we? Thinking if only we had a finisher up front we'd batter teams? Well I don't anyway as we create next to nothing. So we could sign Wood or Graham or whoever, yes we need another striker but if we don't get them in good areas in and around the box then it's going to be the same old story until we get our own Championship version of Cesc Fabregas. 6 assists in 4 games for Chelsea, how many have our central midfielders got? 1 between them? I can't think of one actually. Our goals are created by the wide players and if you're putting aimless crosses in it becomes very hit and miss.

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread
Posted by: an angry wolf (IP Logged)
Date: 14/09/2014 14:16

Costa is the man getting points for chelsea, not fabregas. Without his 7 goals in 4 games the table wouldnt be looking quite as rosy. Chelsea had the most creative midfield in the league last season but were never going to win it with torres and ba upfront. Liverpool came within a whisker of winning the league last season down to a striker...suarez not a creative midfield. They have the same midfield as last season, arguably stronger having spent over 100 million but will struggle to finish top 4 now i suspect.

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread
Posted by: Arthur Tannen (IP Logged)
Date: 14/09/2014 15:18

Yes a good comparison between Chelsea and Liverpool last season, Chelsea had plenty of creativity but no one to finish off the chances created, whereas Liverpool didn't have such a creative midfield but a world class striker. So when people say we are desperate for a striker they mean we are some kind of championship version of last season's Chelsea, plenty of creativity but just lacking our own Diego Costa to come in and finish off the chances? Well that's not the Wolves I've seen this season, we are crying out for a better link between McDonald and the front players. At the moment it's the 2 sitting midfielders who are feeding the wide players, the problem with that though is that you're giving them the ball from the centre circle. A much better option would be to have a better player between the two sitting midfielders and Dicko, that way McDonald can then feed the ball into him and suddenly you have someone who's creative in the middle of the pitch in the final 3rd. Then all three attacking players become a option, he can feed it to the two wide players in much more dangerous areas of the pitch but also has the option of playing in Dicko through the middle. At the moment our tactic is get it wide and put crosses in the box.

That's just my view of the first few games though, our lack of goals are down to far more than needing a new striker.

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread

You imply that an attacking midfielder is more important than a striker so using the chelsea analogy again, how many goals do you think chelsea would score with the equivalent of clarke and macalindon upfront even with world class attacking midfielders AT? Forwards also create chances as well and score them, have you watched costa this season? As well as finding the back of the net he tracks back, assists other attacking players but you seen to be under the impression that a striker just stands on the penalty spot waiting for these creative midfielders you talk about. Scenario one which you think is priority is to bring in an attacking midfielder and pray dickp stays fit or hope clarke has a reincarnation into something resembling a pro footballer or option 2 bring in another striker leaving us with better options than donkey boy on the bench which in turn would take pressure off sako for goals allowing him to play slightly further back in a more creative role instead of looking for goals due to the ineptitude of clarke/macalinden

i think your both right, what A.T is saying, all were doing at the moment is get it to the wings and cross it,thats the only way we can play. if we had someone to link up with dicko and mcdonald we could go through the middle aswell, the problem is, and this is where your right angry were getting to the wingers and they cross it but there's only dicko their, it all breaks down and we lose it. us only having one decent striker is a f#cking joke, i also thought it dident work with saville and mcdonald yesterday

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread

If you'd read what I said angry, you'd see I said "of course we need a striker", everyone associated with Wolves is in agreement with that, other than Morgan. My point is though that I think Dicko is good enough to score goals regularly at this level, at the moment he's fit so my conclusion is that there's a lack of creativity. Which is confirmed by every game I've seen this season, we've dominated every game for two 3rd's of the pitch but have been poor in the final 3rd, this isn't down to just the striker, it's the midfield too.

Yes a striker should create goals for himself too but the bulk of them will be created by the team. Of course the equivalent of Clarke and McAlinden wouldn't score many goals at Chelsea, but I don't see the comparison as Wolves don't have the equivalent midfield and create hardly anything. Dicko works back, runs into wide positions and plays other players so I'm definitely not under the impression that a striker should stand on the penalty spot waiting to be set up. Most people are certainly under the impression that we just need a striker and the goals will flow.

I agree with dicko, he is good enough as his goal scoring record shows depite the weekly slander on the match thread but im sure you arent naive enoigh to believe he wont get injured /suspended etc over 9 months of football so what then? The comparison with chelsea is merely to illustrate how a striker is always more important than an attacking midfielder. The truth is we need both but of course will end up with neither as you know as well as I do.. a shame as we are only a couple of players away from a decent promotion push but there we are

Re: Blackpool V Wolves Match Thread

It goes without saying that we are desperate for a striker as back up to Dicko or to challenge him, but at the moment he's fit so my point is about the current starting 11. Dicko is a good player and will finish chances, there's no doubt about that. We also have good wide players, but we are lacking someone in the middle who'll link everything altogether. McDonald does that to a certain extent but it's from too deep, if we had someone between him and Dicko who was good on the ball with decent vision then you'd bring out the best in Sako, VLP & Dicko.
