Match Thread: Wolves vs Watford FC
By Wolves
September 28 2019
Wolves fans will be desperate to see their team inflict another defeat on Watford and pick up their first win of the season today at Molineux.
In what many will consider to be a six-pointer match between the Premiership's bottom two teams, Wolves fans will hope their team can be as emphatic against Watford as Manchester City were in their 8 - 0 demolition of them last week. However Wolves are struggling to score goals this season, particularly their main striker Raul Jiminez, so perhaps a 1 - 0 victory will be very acceptable too!! Following their hard won Carabao Cup victory over Reading midweek Nuno Espirito Santo will be expected to ring the changes in line-up again, but it will be interesting to see whether he returns to the 'normal' back three or sticks with the line-up which featured at Crystal Palace last Sunday. Patrick Cutrone was hobbling for the last ten minutes of Wednesday's game so he perhaps will miss todays's match.
It is hoped that this board will carry a commentary for today's game for those unable to otherwise follow it, and members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of others.

An unexpected team for today's game with Traore featuring upfront with Jiminez and Jota isn't even on the bench. Saiss returning to defence as per last week

Wolves 1 Watford 0
Too unwell to get to Molineux today, no links working for me, even the one Angry provided, missed the goal but ..... great news about the Doc and scoreline and a Chinese link for Hesgoals has finally just commenced!
UTW!

They’ve just replayed the goal - it’s ridiculous in a good way - how is Doc in that terrific position to score with no other forwards anywhere near him?

Handball shout goes begging for a Wolves penalty, would have been so harsh.
Additionally, maybe predictable and understandable but lots of empty Watford seats today ... as well as 2 that I know of in the North Bank

Long injury spell for Saiss who looked spaced

Need a second.
Seems a flat atmosphere at Molineux

Half time whistle and Wolves have a well deserved lead at half time through Doherty
Wolves 1 Watford 0

Nothing much is happening is it? We look comfortable, they look short of ideas. Happy for it to stay that way.

Will be interesting to watch on MOTD. According to radio commentary Troares cross/shot hit the outstretched arm of the defender, so arm in unnatural position + penalty (whether harsh or not)

2-0!! Excellent.

Own goal to Wolves. Doc put some the ball over towards MGW, Wwho helps it on, but Janmatt heads it past Foster
Wolves 2 W'ford 0

Three added minutes to play
Such an important win which will propel us up to 13th!
As for the performance, you could say ‘understated ‘ however at this stage, a win’s a win.
Manchester City next week ....... an upset??!!

Wolves 2 Watford 0

Just thought I'd make a quick point to those it seems to have eluded, Nuno has switched back to 3-4-3 for the last few games and so Traore was playing wide forward, not centre forward as has been suggested, and Neto was also playing wide forward.
It hasn't eluded anyone as not a single person on the thread has mentioned "centre forward"... wide forward, narrow forward, fat forward, thin forward what's it matter? A striker is a striker and he was playing upfront unless I was watching a completely different game. "Forwards" often drift out wide but I maintain for a supposed right back to now be looking for goals as a wide/narrow/long/short/deep/shallow/ man in the hole/ target man/defensive/ poacher/ trequartister/false nine forward is very strange and highlights a lack of depth in our attacking options. As has already been stated, none of our narrow /wide etc etc "forwards" scored needing a right back/narrow back/inverted fullback/complete wingback wide back / quarterback for the sanfancisco 49ers ( take your pick) to score and an own goal.

He isn't being played as a striker though, he's playing as a winger, as is Neto. Traore is a winger, whether that be a wing back or a winger in the forward sense. We played with one striker, Raul. When we play two up front, we play with two strikers. Traore was in his natural position yesterday, and it showed, he played well (as he has done all season, as it happens).
Neto is a great player and for only 19 years old... looks promising; or am I putting a curse on the lad?
Does the own goal still count as a MGW assist?
It says on one football app that Neto is a striker, I thought he was a midfielder? Concur?
That said according to the app we have; 3 Keeps, 9 defenders, 10 midfielders, 4 attackers! ✌️

A striker as defined by the Collins dictionary "In football and some other team sports, a striker is a player who mainly attacks and scores goals, rather than defends" ...he is there to add to our attacking options so be as pedantic as you like. He was played in a position to score goals having been played as a defensive player the week before- I find that very strange.

I'm not being pedantic at all, I'm explaining Traore's position on the pitch. He and Neto track back and create a bank of four across the midfield when we're defending (in a 5-4-1 shape) so I don't see how you can classify him as a striker. Raul is the striker. Traore and Neto were playing wide and expected to create chances and assist the defence without the ball.
I don't find it strange that Traore can play either as a wing back or an attacking player, he's becoming a utility player much like Saiss has gone from midfield to defence in recent weeks. We've changed shape and, now we're less protected defensively from the three midfielders we were playing previously, it seems Nuno prefers the more defensively-minded Jonny and Doherty at wing back but still wishes to utilise Traore and his obvious attacking strengths. Makes perfect sense to me.

It was said on NBC, that Jota was out injured with his big toe injury of some sort...

Neto is an attacking player, I personally wouldn't classify him as a midfielder although I could see the argument that would. He's very much a Costa or Cavaleiro type of player, playing in the wider two of the three forward positions.
Moving Boly to the right hand side gives Doc and Traore a bit more support and cover and looks like the right move just now to hold the fort, with Saiss being asked to do a classic stopping role on the left alongside Jonny, our best defender, should be adequate for now.
Bennett should be positioned as replacement to give Coady a rest occasionally. But the back 3 needs reinforcing in January with a marquee signing.
Still not confident at the moment. We look shaky with less possession than Watford, have a very thin squad with few options for lack of form or injury. We continue to struggle to score and several players seem to have lost their mojo.
As we know this league is brutal and right now I don't see any obviously weak teams. No one is obviously for the drop or looks a lot weaker than ourselves.
Jimenez, Jota and Cutrone have to start finding the net otherwise it is going to be a long and difficult season

Its clear he is seen as a striker - directly from the horses mouth unless you think nuno and the player are lying regardless of how wide he is playing. If it makes you feel better to see him as a fairy on top of a xmas tree formation playing wide as a "utility player " fair enough [www.clubcall.com]

Firstly, the clubcall article you quote is from February when we were playing 2 up front and Nuno experimented and DID play Traore as part of a front 2, which didn't last very long at all. He was swiftly moved to right wing back towards the end of the season and he now plays wide right. Do keep up.
Secondly, the Sky Sports article you've quoted links to the profile of the Malian footballer Adama Traore. If you knew football as well as you claim to, you'd know there are several professional footballers called Adama Traore, two of them are Malian internationals, the other is our very own Spanish version. You're wrong, just accept it. Traore isn't a striker.
Quote:barmy army wolf
Sorry to get involved but IMO the Spanish Adama Traore, is most definitely not a defender!😬✌️
Can't disagree with that to be fair.

Maisey the fact you are getting so worked up on what a player is called winger/striker is hilarious , he said himself he is a striker at times lol yet you're still determined to argue the point- infact your only contribution to the thread was to accuse people of saying he was a " centre forward " which is complete nonsense but you cant admit you made a mistake
I'm not getting worked up in the slightest, you're the one trawling articles to prove your (incorrect) point that Traore played as a striker on Saturday, which he didn't. If you actually went to games instead of spouting from afar, and understood Nuno's tactical ideas in the slightest, you'd know he was not relying on Traore (or Neto for that matter) to score goals or act as a striker on Saturday.
You say you don't understand why Traore has gone from defence to attack so suddenly, and yet ignore the entirely valid reason - that we've changed our tactical setup in the last couple of weeks and so Traore is finding he's being played back in his natural position of winger. We have certain players that are viewed as utility players, Traore is one of them, as are Dendoncker and Saiss. It's really not difficult to understand.
You stated the thread implied people were stating Traore was playing as a centre forward when no one suggested such a thing. After realising your mistake you are backtracking to using the striker term unable to grasp the difference between a striker and a centre forward confirming you are utterly clueless.
As far as your point regarding "going to games", whether people on here attend Molineux or not is quite frankly irrelevant and none of your business. I live a 7 hour round trip from the ground with many living even further afield - people have more going on in their lives than claiming the tag of being the metaphorical superfan attending week in week out. I have had two decades of season tickets at wolves … so what? I'd be more concerned about your own lack of knowledge in the game where you are unable to differentiate between a centre forward and other positions which are deemed to be offensive illustrating you are spouting utter rubbish. Thank you for clarifying Traore wasn't playing centre forward when no one has said he was Maisey- perhaps a trip to specsavers may be in order so you can actually read what was posted which I will visit myself after the "wrong Traore " link was posted.

You seem unable to grasp the simple concept of a centre forward being different to a striker with the year not being 1985 where we have the traditional centre forward lurking in the box as a target man and a "big un/little un" waiting. Strikers can be utilised in more positions than a "centre forward" which by definition operates in the centre contrary to a trequartister for eg who can play either as a striker or midfielder but is never in a million years a " centre forward". An inside forward can play out wide drifting inside from the flanks can play as a "striker" but isn't a " centre forward " .

LOL
In general terms, our goal scoring - from our supposed goal scorers - in the league, continues to be a concern. Early days yet, still, but would like things to change shortly! Would be wrong to single them out for overall below par performances however.
