Match Thread: Wolves v Everton 12.7.20

It seems incredible that the reverse fixture at Goodison was played over 10 months ago on 1st September 2019, unfortunately that day we lost 3-2, so hopefully Wolves can put on a bit of a show and make amends. We certainly need to see an improvement in attacking effort and quality to erase the memory two tepid performances versus Arsenal and Sheffield United. A nice free kick from Neves would do the trick!!
Having 'retired' early yesterday after Saturday afternoon refreshments, I had no idea until this morning that The Blades had beaten Chelsea, a really excellent result for them and thus leap frogging us in the table. Does this put our midweek efforts against them into perspective perhaps? I hope so but fear not however we really could do with being 6th in the table again by 2pm today - that'd be an enormous boost for confidence.
Wolves have got to get onto the front foot today and show more purpose in Everton's half, an opposition who are equally hard to predict. It would be most welcome to see some creative play coming from any number of players, midfield especially because since 'project restart' it seems we are totally reliant on a piece of Traore magic to unlock defences. On that note, I hope his 4th shoulder dislocation of the season does not mean he is sidelined this afternoon.
Enjoy the match today, fingers and everything crossed for the right result and a much better and entertaining game and as always feel free to make your thoughts known on the thread below.
As a final note, it was really sad to hear of the death of Jackie Charlton on Friday. I just about remember him playing (an illustrious career) however it's his management days and as TV co-commentator / pundit that I am most familiar - as well as the World Cup folklore. What a character he was and I loved listening to him speak, a man in football who I thoroughly admired. RIP.

Team news - and there are changes, The Donk, Neto and Podence all get at start at the expense of Traore, Moutinho and Jota

Changes had to be made, maybe Nuno believes Donk can support the front line a bit better than a Mout / Neves combination?
Certainly no problem with seeing Neto in the side, he is a very good player in the making and will be interesting to see Podence -A pocket rocket he is, however he perhaps hasn’t shown a great deal for us as yet, albeit with only limited opportunities. A great opportunity for both.

A couple of early chances then? Doc and Podence both scuffing. Calvert-Lewis got in fairly easy too. Plenty of Wolves possession which Everton seem happy with but a better Wolves start. 9 minutes gone

Well ....... drinks ....... we’re the better side, just, plenty of possession but no clear cut chance for either side.
Then Podence, great pass to Neto, just intervened by Digne, otherwise that could well have been in the back of the net. Then Podence, great play, great shot, very good save

Wolves’s main danger man this half, Podence, great piece of skill and gets brought down, penalty, coolly put away from Jimenez. Funny, I didn’t feel confident when he stepped up, I shouldn’t have worried!!
As a half overall we had a couple of good chances and were the better side but a match played largely at a training match pace. Definitely not a classic but I’m much happier now.

With Neto, Jimenez and Podence up front, there is a lot of potential for goals.

Podence offers more than Jota in his current form.. better overall performance but every match without fans seems to be a sedentary affair for all clubs. It is better than nothing but not football as we know it

Afternoon All I had to record game and catch up which Ihave done now. Totally agree that 1st half was like an exhibition game, but also surprisingly just how poor E’ton have been. Podence having a good game & looks like Jota will now replace the injured Neto who has also played well. I note Neves still can’t keep a ball down when he smacks it!!

Wow, what an error from Pickford after some very good play from our man Podence. Shot comes in, goes through his legs dribbles onto the line and saves the ball with about an inch to spare. Lucky lad, what a shame for us!

Traore comes on whic h won’t please Digne who I already on a yellow card. I’m surprised at Nuno using him if he’s injured. Podence replaced.

Traore on for the last 20 minutes, replacing Podence ....... that’s a shame, our best player today. Back to Jota for a moment, his confidence seems shot to pieces, the way he approached that 1 on 1 was just awful and just the type of chance he would have put away with aplomb in the past.

All over and a very well deserved and encouraging win for Wolves after the previous two results. Great debut by DP and I thought Neves had a superb game controlling the midfield, and that pass to Jota was sublime.

3-0 a competent and comfortable win. You might say easy. Much of what we were looking for, more attacking intent, better midfield play with much more purpose, different players (other than Traore) giving the Everton something to think about throughout the match. Our 3rd goal was so bloody good and delighted for Jota, his confidence appeared so low, a terrible miss immediately followed by his sumptuous thump into the back of the net will do him the power of good.
A very satisfying win indeed. I’m glad I’m not an Everton fan, I might have been grumpy post Arsenal and Blades but my god, the Toffees were dismal today, a totally bereft display ....... which I will say we enforced on them! I’d be spitting after that.
As for Podence, a great match for him, delighted with the ‘pocket rocket’ and how he took to his first start. Great energy, neat on the ball and more than a smidgen of skill!
This is definitely the type of performance which really gives me hope again, perhaps it should have been 5-0 however? The sad thing is that this win was missed by 31,000 fans, that’s a crying shame.

Not sure how good Everton are but a great way to come back from Wolves and the lion's share done without Traore. Good match from Podence. Dendoncker and Neves great in midfield. Better from Boly after two iffy games.
How Traore missed his chance God knows.
Neves was m.o.m for me. Always made himself available to receive a pass, defended well when he had to and some of his passing absolutely top drawer.
Great work as well by Nuno and his team to get a performance like that after a couple of poor matches.

I agree Andy I think Doc is the one player beginning to look tired after all the games we have played, but I’m it’s just a matter of him having a bit of a poor spell & needing a goal to revive him a bit!

A joy to watch at times and the individual skills were abundantly on display. Podence will be pleased with his contribution and Neto is pushing to be a regular starter, hope that his injury is not going to interrupt his progress.

I'm glad Rui is our goalkeeper and not Pickford. In fact, I'm glad Ruddy is no.2 and not Pickford. The way he smiles and laughs at the camera when he drops a goolie would drive me mad if I was an Everton supporter.
