Match Thread: Leeds United vs Wolves

Two Talented Men
By Wolves
October 19 2020

Wolves travel to Elland Road, Leeds tonight for their first Premier League encounter with newly-promoted United. Two teams, led by well thought of coaches within the game will both have three points as their objective, in order to establish themselves in this season's league.

This will surely be a much tougher game than when the teams last met duing Wolves Championship-winning season of 2017-18. On that occasion Wolves came away with a 3-0 win. This season Marcello Bielsa has moulded a much praised team, which has been further strengthened during the transfer window. It also has former Wolves star Helder Costa as a regular member of the team these days.

Many Wolves players have been away on International duty during the recent two week break, which has restricted the amount of preparation time available to Coach Nuno Espirito Santo, however he has been concentrating on bedding in the new Wolves players and involving the under 23's squad. Nuno has declared Marcal fit to play, so it may be a quite different looking team tonight from that which started the Fulham game two weeks ago.

Tonight's game will kick off at 8pm and will feature on Sky's Monday Night Football programme.

Our referee will be David Coote - fresh from the controversy of his role as VAR Referee in the Everton v Liverpool match at the weekend!!

This board will hopefully carry regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it.

Only one change for tonight's starting line-up with Joao Moutinho replacing Neves. Saiss remains at left wing back which is disappointing. Line-up:

Sky have been promoting this match as if there is only one team involved, similar to our match v Manchester City. No prizes for which team Sky have chosen to focus on tonight! We got a lot of exposure last season however the media now seem bored!

Maybe that is a blessing. We have had our share of overhyping during the last 15-18 months whereas most Wolves fans that I have in touch with appear much more level headed.

Regardless of what the tabloid press / TV think, it’ll be tough tonight. A great opportunity for our team to this platform to up it a bit. We have been somewhat lacklustre so far, even so in this early stage, we have chance of pushing up to 6th ..... or 5th if we really spank them!! 😳 😂

Bar Neves, it’s the same team as v Fulham. Here’s hoping for a better performance but with the same result!!

Leeds have started much better. They have scored but Bamford was well off side.

Not exactly comfortable viewing in the first 8 minutes.

Wolves are struggling to retain possession particularly when they are in the Leeds half. Free kick to Leeds in a good position well cleared by Wolves who then break but Neto cannot get it over to Raul

Same boring rubbish from wolves week after week - apparently 20 of our last 25 matches wolves have failed to score in the first half . Leeds at least try to play football, we just pass sideways and hoof it forward after passes going nowhere with Traore to save the say second half no doubt.

Regardless of results our defensive performances particularly first halves of games are embarrassing and I wouldnt pay money to either sky or for match tickets to watch this sh1te

Re: Match Thread: Leeds United vs Wolves

Lengthy period of successful defending by Wolves. Neto has possession down left wing but he is missing Jonny’s partnership down that wing. Leeds get their 4th corner which ends up with their goalie. Good break by Donk leads to a good shot by PD being well saved
Half time after is very busy 45 minutes for Wolves defence. Leeds are well organised and exciting- the same way we were when we I were first promoted & nobody knew how we would play!
Raul not seeing much of the ball yet
Leeds 0 Wolves 0

leeds very unfortunate not to be 3 or 4 up - poor finishing from leeds otherwise itd be game over. The leeds keeper touching the ball once in first half stoppage time from a snap shot

Our squad is worth more than double that of leeds according to numerous sites , its a pity we dont have a manager that knows how to play any other way other than sit back defending for your lives football and hope to counter attack whether we play Sevilla or shrewsbury. Top manager adapt , we play the same way against everyone... we're making leeds look like real madrid although we did that for long periods against fulham so no great shock

Appropriate that we are playing in these strips - Raul up front is marooned.

Incredible we come so close to take the lead, that would have been thoroughly undeserved.

In general, Leeds look like the only team that are really up for it. Once again, our front players are isolated, midfield failing to link up, defending (albeit well) in numbers but my word, some of our passing and ball retention has been so poor.

If we get the ball, we’re looking preferentially to go backwards and sideways ..... or knock it up to man mountain Podence.

Positives - definitely Coady and Kilman, who have both been great. Saiss did well at the death but he is out of place as a left wing back. At times, Leeds had him on toast.

Something big needs to change at half time, but as we all know, at 0-0 we always have a chance

A tame effort by Raul deflected heavily into the back of the next. On balance we deserve a goal this half.

Leeds have had some results, but maybe now we can build some confidence. Five games, nine points, sixth place, what we we worried about

The ultimate game of 2 halves again- if we had played in the first half as we did in the second I doubt anyone would criticise a thing but why we keep playing like a league 2 team in first halves I've no idea. I can't recall apart from Sheff utd the last time we played well in the first half and went in ahead at HT. It was more down to luck than anything else we were still in the game going into the second half and inquests need to be made why in 26 matches we have scored in only 6 first halves - that form replicated in the second half would have relegated us.

In the end a good result .. one thing you can see about this wolves team is when we take the lead we rarely surrender it although some of that is due to effectively playing 7 at the back for much of the game. The level of performance in the 2nd half I expect to see replicated throughout 90 minutes

Leeds played some really good stuff in the 1st half but all through the match Rui was not seriously tested.
Great strike from Saiss but rightly ruled out.
Coady as usual organized in defence and very impressed with Kilman. In the odd match he had last season and the twice he has played this season he doesn't, so far, look out of place.
A good win.

Very hard to get my head around this performance.... on a positive note we battled well but Nuno seriously has to sort out our first half performances. Also we have become far too predictable. Overall though we have become boring to watch !

Re: Match Thread: Leeds United vs Wolves

Difficult to sum up last night.

The most important thing is that we won and this despite not playing very well, especially in the first half. That half was very tough to watch, however with the benefit of a bit of reflection, Patricio didn’t have a lot to do. Conversely, we weren’t at it at all and a considerable worry that poor form and the paucity of attacking intent was there for all to see - and let’s face it, not for the first time this season. Leeds were bright and purposeful, everything we weren’t.

Second half, much, much better. With the flick of a switch we came to life and posed problems and overall we were the better side that half. The Saiss goal (a quite superb strike) being disallowed was another marginal offside, the kind of which we’ve seen before, we’ll see again and the type of incident which is helping to ruin things - so much for VAR clearing things up. Apparently Wenger, presumably in his FIFA role (whatever that is) has been calling for ‘daylight’ on such decisions. A sensible idea which would take into account the fact that level is onside and an idea which was always bound to be rejected, and was. Our goal was a fluke, of course, but we were deserving of a goal in that half. It proved to be enough, mainly due to Leeds huff and puff but we did invite pressure and possession by retreating to an extent. Leeds had a few opportunities but never looked organised enough to take one. Thank goodness.

Who’d have thought, 6th after 5 matches and we’ve only played well in 3 halves of football - first half v Blades, 2nd half v Manchester City and I’ll add 2nd half last night. Which is it to be? Glass half full and we’ve got into a great early league position whilst playing poorly overall or glass half empty, we’ve been playing poorly and if we carry on, we’ll be turned over again West Ham style? We certainly don’t look like rolling anybody over ‘West Ham style’ at the moment. It has been a season of difficult viewing so far.

Once again, there were times when our midfield were completely missing in support of our attack which is disappointing, Saiss, despite his luscious pile driver, looks completely out of place at LWB and did anybody else think Semedo had a bit of a stinker?! Early days for him.

Positives include Podence and Neto, especially the latter and Jimenez’s energy and team effort is just brilliant - as always. The big pluses, without a shadow was our back 3. Kilman was really excellent, a fantastic positive - composed and decent on the ball. An excellent game for him and pleased he was awarded MOTM, however I would have given it to Coady, who just edged it for me. Coady controlled, marshalled, cajoled, intervened, nagged all match. Positionally, Coady was magnificent.

Whatever the performance or style, I’m so happy with the 3 points! If nothing else, it stunts the apparent media ‘love in’ for Bielsa and Leeds which has been driving me mad. A good side yes, no dispute there. They have played very well so far but it takes more than 4 matches to earn the tabloid and TV hype they have hitherto received with Bielsa being treated almost as the second coming . By the way, I wished he spoke just a bit of English. His translator looked like a rabbit in headlights last night.

6th in the table. Yes, glass half full I think ........ unless we ‘F’ it up versus Toon on Sunday 😂

Totally agree Ivy....

For me it’s difficult to imagine that Neto only just turned 20 in March! He so exciting to watch as is Podence, whom is only 24..

I’m thinking it, could be something to do with not having pre-season?
Coupled with the fact we lost 2 great players, one in particular (Doc) that we miss....

So players haven’t played together, some are learning Nuno’s ways and there are some that are having to learn the Premiership and Nuno’s ways, that can’t be easy??

All this with the added fact there are no fans!

Nuno knows and won’t be enjoying what’s happening at the minute.

Then I look at the bigger picture, there are better and more beautiful things to worry about than football.

With this pandemic and travel bans etc, is Nuno missing his family? I seem to remember reading an article about not being able to visit his family after the season finished and Portugal was on the list of countries.

Wonder if we aren’t psychologically fit?....
It’s all well and good being physically fit, but if your heads gone?
