Wolves return to Molineux today hoping to continue the good work started at Elland Road on Monday evening with their win at Leeds. Today's visitors are Newcastle United who will be hoping to recover from their 4 - 1 home defeat by Manchester United.
Coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be hopeful that his team are now 'up and running' in this season's Premier League after their very brief close season, and their stuttering start to the competition is now behind them. He will also be hoping they can add to the two clean sheets they have achieved in their last two games. In his pre-match press conference he has stated that there are some injury concerns in the squad, but did not identify the players involved, and did not say whether players such as Marcal are now fit to start, or whether Max Kilman will continue at Left Centre Back after his Man of the Match performance at Leeds.
Newcastle may well be in confident mood knowing that they have not been defeated at Molineux since 2003. Last season they took the lead through Almiron before an equaliser from Leander Dendoncker. However they have injury issues including their first and second choice goalkeepers. New signing Callum Wilson appears to be fit to start.
This afternoon's game will kick off at 4:30 pm and will be refereed by the very experienced Lee Mason
The game will feature on Sky's Super Sunday programme, and coverage will start at 4:00pm, probably with a 25 minute review of yesterday's game between Man Utd and Chelsea!!
This board will hopefully carry regular updates on the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch it

One change for todays staring Xl sees Neves replace Moutinho in midfield, otherwise the same team as played at Leeds. Newcastle have injuries and sickness and are adopting a 3-5-2 line-up. Wolves line-up:

We need to take advantage today. Newcastle will be hampered by injuries so we need to take the match to them from the off and put the result beyond them asap, none of the sitting back and absorbing the pressure nonsense.

Nelson Somedo already well involved & gets our first corner, which is easily taken by a Darlow. DP picks up & runs through the centre but smashes it too high

Promising play fizzles out on left with Saiss but we’re soon attacking again. A lot of good build up play but little threat from us in the final third

Lost the initiative a bit but still okay. Saiss, sadly, proving on more than one occasion he isn’t comfortable in that LWB position ...... cue a pile driving goal from him! I hope

Neto does well on right wing but passes his cross to Darlow. We are having to try and get round their packed centre via the wings. Saint Maximan has a free role in Ut’s side & is always a danger. Sadly Raul isn’t really at the races yet!

Olive branches of encouragement in that half but ultimately neither keeper was troubled much. Decent attacking play at times down the right, some nifty skill from Podence. A decent start though tapered off somewhat. So much better than the first half at Leeds, at least. Toon look like they could do damage on the break. Overall we are the better side, just.

Here we go again with no changes. Great pass by DP to Raul but another wayward shot from him. Very impressed with Somedo who seems to have taken to the role very well.

Great chance for Neto after good work by DP but he puts it over the bar trying a first time shot. Corner wasted by Utd. Good workin the centre by a Raul to set up Neto but he shoots wide

This game is reminding me of playing Huddersfield in the way we struggle to bea5 a defensive team. Only DP & Neto showing any real urgency to attack. Utd attack & create a shooting chance for Almiron which is collected by Rui after a Boly block. Adama will be on soon! Again excellent build up play by Wolves but poor decisions in the penalty area

What can you say, totally bloody frustrating. The better side, we should have won but you cannot keep relying on a single goal to win a match.
What was going on with the placement of that wall?!! Poor all around.
Ultimately we are not testing the oppositions keeper enough and two points thrown away!

All over and a really disappointing result after being on top for so much of the game & yet another draw between us & them at the Mol. Poor defensive wall set up by Rui to allow the free kick to squeeze in, CC will be disappointed as it was a really soft free kick against him.

The best performance from us for a long time and we end up with one point. Robbed, but the future looks good, Neto is blossoming, Podence improves with every match and both Semedo and Marcal are settling in very well adding a bit of quality. Dendoncker should be first on the team sheet, he has been impressive the last few matches.

Still gutted about the result yesterday. Felt like a defeat in the end and haven’t yet been able to face watching MOTD. The free kick at the death was in a very dangerous position and was taken very well but I really wasn’t happy with the wall before it was taken .... I suspect like many Wolves fans.
We dominated and they offered nothing in the second half at all, only having a few breakaways in the first half. The disappointment at FT was immense.
1-0 is always a dangerous scoreline and whilst Toon were highly defensive, we didn’t really create many clear cut chances. Our goal was great but where else are our goals coming from, if not from Jimenez? Some of the work Podence and Neto did was excellent but will (more often than not) come to nothing if we don’t have bodies in the box. A familiar story, even though Newcastle were parking the bus.
Overall, a much better performance than Leeds, despite the score, and a much better game for Semedo with Marcal suggesting he should get the nod over Saiss on Friday versus Palace.

I agree with Ivy regarding goal-scoring. Jimenez is the only one who can score regularly. I wasn't totally against letting Jota go, he became inconsistent for us and played in purple patches, but when goals are concerned he was our second highest scorer, 16 last season. However good, or not, we think Neto, Podence, Traore are I doubt if they will get 16 this season between them.
Similarly with Doherty who would get 6 or 7 from wing-back which isn't bad. Time will tell but I suspect Samedo will be a better player for us than Doherty but where goals are concerned he isn't going to get 6 a season.
It seems as though Silva isn't ready yet so God help us if Jimenez gets injured.

I don't agree with the above summaries , on another day we would have won comfortably and if we keep playing like that we will win far more than we lose. It was a much better performance than the Leeds one with Neto and Traore both showing they know where the back of the net is last season... some have very short memories on here. Podence is a tricky player but not sure he should be playing upfront. Jimenez could have had a hat trick yesterday with Newcastle barely coming past the halfway line and apart from picking the ball out of the back of the net, I'm struggling to remember Patricio touching the ball.
That said, you have to wonder where a player is that we paid a kings ransom for ( Fabio Silva) and although initially enthusiastic about his acquisition, it's certainly worrying he isn't deemed good enough to have started a single game yet

Incidentally the main reason for our lack of goals isn't the quality of striker but the quality of final ball from the likes of Kilman and Saiss. I also lose track of the number of long shots we take which are merely speculative efforts in a game where it isn't only Neves responsible ... they should be banned by Nuno unless there is literally no other option

I agree with a lot of what you say Angry. I too think we will win more than we lose playing like that. I'm also not sure Podence should be starting and that Rui hardly touched the ball apart from the goal, although that's nothing to do with our lack of goal-scoring.
There is however, nowt wrong with my memory (yet). Last season Neto scored 5 goals and Traore 6.

Yes 5 goals and 6 goals respectively Andy but from how many chances ? Traore wasnt even played as a striker for much of last season often coming off the bench and Neto was often out wide. I also recall at least 2 or 3 goals of Netos incorrectly chalked off with VAR and not sure we can judge Traores finishing when playing at RB.. the only position he has yet to play is in goal.
We normally have such a negative defensive set up the only way to judge the players is if they continually squander chances or fail to create from good service. If we play like we did against Newcastle I think both players would be in double figures playing regularly. That said, I prefer Traore over Neto and think he should start
