Match Thread: Wolves vs Aston Villa
Banner For Raul
By Wolves
December 12 2020
After the dreadful mauling dished out to Wolves at Anfield on Sunday, Wolves fans will be hoping for a much better result today against local rivals Aston Villa
A super banner, paid for through crowd funding by Wolves fans will take centre stage in the Steve Bull stand at Molineux for today's local derby. The morale of the Wolves squad and coaches will undoubtedly have been boosted by the visit of our centre forward to the training ground this week when he looked well and spoke positively about his recovery from a fractured skull.
Wolves will be hoping for a repeat of last season's results against Villa when they won both matches, however Villa have made a much more positive start to this season than last and have scored some notable victories, espcially against Liverpool. Wolves were generally very poor in their last game and coach Nuno Espirito Santo will have had to focus on improving defensive and attacking issues this week. The newly introduced 'back four' was suspect, and the lack of a recognised striker was also a major issue in our poor performance at Anfield, and it will be interesting to see how it is addressed for today's game. No further injuries have been declared.
Today's game is the early kick off match which will feature on BT Sport kicking off at 12:30pm
The referee will be Mike Dean

Let’s go for it today, beating the Villa will go a long way to erase last week, and maybe more!
UTW

Having said that the guys on the pitch now have to put in a performance and Saiss needs to keep away from any form of card from the referee. Front line looks capable and it would be nice to see Fabio get off the mark.
Really hoping Fabio can get off the mark.
A nice gesture to Raul from more fans

By the way folks, Cody is a good bet today. Coole Cody, in the 1.50 at Cheltenham
lets hope it fares better than your last tip Ivy which fell at the first in the national a couple of years back if my memory serves me correctly

A period of great pressure, shots crosses. COYW!

Adama booked for challenge from behind. Good defending by Nelson to deny Traore.
Half time whistle & I can only summarise by saying Martinez has been the busier keeper making some good saves.
Is there anybody out there who is not watching the game on BT or a stream? If not it seems pointless trying to offer a sort of commentary & I could watch the game & just make comments

A good EW bet, if you like a flutter on namesakes. The horse is a bit up and down but Coole Cody won what used to be called the Whitbread Gold Cup a couple of weeks ago in attritional Cheltenham conditions. As for my National predictions, well Angry, your memory is better than mine!! 😳😁 Actually my tip for 2020 was Potters Corner ..... it won the virtual version and I backed it. A poor substitute for the real thing which I had a ticket for in April.
Another decent EW namesake for Mr Fincher .... Ballyandy in the 3pm at Cheltenham. You heard it here first.
As you can see, I’m talking about racing, not football. Hardly a classic is it. Lots of potential in our team but just not realising anything as yet. Frustrating, stoppy, starty match without any flow. Still 45 to go. UTW!!

On cue, Silva hits the post!

Donk’s last play, Neves now on. 10 minutes, a final throw of the dice maybe

Villa down to ten men. That guarantees a draw then 😁

El Ghazi - scores

Villa win by a penalty
Nuno needs to decide whether a back 3 or 4 is best for us and who is his best left wing back
Wolves 0 Villa 1
How do sum that up? Dire huff and puff stuff.
Yes, Martinez made two very decent saves but that effort is not good enough. It’s okay having nippy attacking approach players but if there is constantly no end result, no goals and scant little excitement, then we will continue to struggle. 11 goals in 12 matches??!! That’s an awful record.
Neto and Podence looked our best players ...... but today, that’s not saying much. Did Villa deserve to win? No, not really but we looked a disjointed mess at times.

We had a couple of decent efforts from Podence and Dendoncker, Neto and Traore showed flashes and Marcel looks decent but overall a poor performance.
By the way Ivy, Coole Cody won what used to be the Hennessey not the Whitbread.

Few positives to talk about, yes we had more shots on goal than Villa but nothing to show for it, we really need to analyse our approach play because what we are doing at present is pointless.
Traore doesn’t look as if he is interested, Podence and Neto are much better options for the wide positions . Fabio is looking more settled with every appearance and whilst we wait for the return of Raul he can fill that central position. It seems that we are almost happy to surrender the midfield by playing took defensively rather than driving forward, our attacking threat far too regularly relies on long balls pinged out to the wings by Conor, often bypassing the midfield completely so not allowing the midfielders much time to get upfield and support the attack.
Semedo or Docherty—-
Marcel seems to have settled in now and copes well with most challenges but offers little to support in an attacking sense, Jonny back in training thank heavens.
Cannot continue to rely on Moutinho, he would now be invaluable as a mature sub to steady the ship if required rather than a dead cert starter or what does Neves do?
I know, blah blah blah, but so disappointed in today’s performance, we’re going backwards not forwards and when you consider the financial outlay we have made something has to change.
It’s hard to disagree that we are going backwards at present. Nuno changing the side every match tells us all that we need to know - we are not playing well nor showing signs of any real progress. I understand transition, consolidation and similar words etc etc, but it is thinly veiled code for ‘not that good’. And we are not very exciting to watch. Yes, we have our moments but generally we just don’t look like scoring freely or frequently. It’s unfortunate for Silva, but he is not the player I would expect to see us splash £35M on. He looks lightweight. In the absence of Raul, we have to look to beef it up, up front.
Keeping the faith!! UTW
PS Ballyandy was a decent 3rd, 16/1.

The lack of goals is a real concern and although we want to change our approach, I'm worried we may be making too many changes all at once what with a supposed new style (although I'm not sure about that one), changing from a back three to a back four and bringing in new players, although to an extent that's been forced upon us with the injuries to Raul and Jonny.
Previously things were fairly successful and we seem to be changing a lot.
The first half bored me rigid so if the second half was anything remotely similar glad I did.. was it even a penalty that was warranted for villa? No great surprise we didn't score, without Jimenez we have no recognised striker above dwarf size as the likes of Podence/neto are attacking midfielders.. how can you expect a man of 5ft 8 to win aerial challenges ?
I bought into the hype of Silva myself but admit to having been proven very wrong - the lad is garbage and the scout responsible for "recommending " him if there was one and he isnt just a mendez signing should be sacked immediately. No club should be spending over 30 million on a man that looks and plays like a big girls blouse especially a club our size which doesn't have the financial clout of the big hitters or the allure. We won't make europe this season which means even with a better season next season the earliest we can expect european football is 2022/23... it's just boring
