Match Thread: FA Cup 3rd Round Wolves vs Crystal Palace

More of this please!

January 8 2021

Wolves host Crystal Palace in the first foray of this season's FA Cup for both teams at Molineux this evening, and Wolves will be looking for a much longer cup run than achieved in this year's Carabao Cup!

Nuno Espirito Santo's team will face a reasonably buoyant Palace today after they have had a couple of positive results, whilst Wolves will still be rueing dropping two points last time out at Brighton on Saturday. Nuno's team selection will be unpredictable, but Leander Dendoncker is hopefully getting closer to a return to action soon. Those remaining on the injury list are still not expected to be fit. Patrick Cutrone and Morgan Gibbs-White have both been recalled from loans, but tonight's game may well be too early for either of them.

The game will kick off at 19:45 hrs and will be screened by BT on their BT Sport Extra 2 channel, which appears to a streaming service and is probably only available to BT subscribers.

This board will attempt to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to otherwise follow it.

Two changes for tonight's starting Xl, with the return of the Donk to midfield and John Ruddy making a rare appearance. Line-up:

Strong selection and it will be interesting to see if MGW and Cutrone get some game time.
Palace fielding an under strength team so we should take advantage.
Hoping that Fabio has a good outing and is not going to be eclipsed by Cutrone which would damage his confidence.

Pleased to see Dendoncker back. Strong side, Nuno obviously taking Cup seriously so a massive disappointment if we don't get into 4th round.

At least Zaha doesn’t start, but Eze is fast becoming a danger man for them too.

Wolves having most of the ball so far. Adama takes his gloves off - so perhaps he means business!!

Adama earns our first corner. Poor touch by RAN spoils a promising move. Neto puts it on Silvaks unmarked head perfectly and he puts it over from 6 yds!!

Oh my goodness, a very big miss from Silva. Absolutely superb Neto work on the left wing, swings it over and Silva completely miss times a wonderful headed opportunity from 6 yards.

Other than that, not a bad start from Wolves, possession wise anyway

RAN looks full of promise in attack but his final ball is very poor. Joao finds Adama in the area who shoots just past the post

Adama having plenty of the ball so far & Semedo doing his best to link up with him.

Great run by Semedo & shot stopped, by Butland, Silva gets another shot in but easily collected

Donk let’s one go from the edge of the area but just too high. Adama crosses from right but too hard again

Lucky to get a corner off Eze & Saiss is up for it, but goes for a throw in. Van architrave goes down like a sack of shot after Adama accidentally touches his chin with his hand!!

Traore thunderbolt, with his left foot!

Much deserved lead 👍

Silva down hurt after a collision with McCarthy which has winded him, but he’s treated & OK. Palace are pretty impotent so far.

One added minute to be played. Wolves goin at half time with a well deserved lead after a super strike from Adama. Palace made 9 changes to their starting Xl which may be why they are so poor by comparison, but Wolves are well organised and have made all the attacks. Such a shame Silva cocked his chance, but great to see Adama get his first of the season especially with his left foot. Semedo & Ait-Nouri have been active up their wings, & Semedoin particular has been offensive whilst RAN’s final pass often lets him down.
Wolves 1 Palace 0

Half time.

Throughly deserved 1-0 lead, we’ve set the pace and John Ruddy has thus far been redundant.

Some great stuff from Neto, Traore is taking the game to Palace (and a fabulous goal!) with some good support from Semedo. We are much better in midfield too, Moutinho and the Donk and some excellent passing from Neves.

Being picky, Ait Nouri is giving the ball away a bit too easy and doesn’t look that composed (but is doing his best to support the attack) and, of course, that miss from Silva won’t have done his confidence that much good.

Hopefully no more Jeckyll and Hyde second half. I’d be inclined to get Cutrone on fro a 20-25 minute run out.

Oh yes. That should do his confidence a power of good. Neves and Muitinho have been great and Semedo too

Comfortable first half with Palace not really offering any threat.
Great goal.
Midfield linking well and Moutinho pulling the strings.
Massive difference in possession so we need to take advantage and add some more goals.

Some early pressure from Palace coped with well then normal service resumed. Ball lands on Silva’s head from a corner and he steers it wide when he really should have scored

Ivy will be pleased to see the ref give a foul throw against Ayew. Soft free kick against Silva just outside our area, & now they have their first corner which is cleared well. Joao gets a shot away but easily collected

An hour gone and we still lead by Adama’s goal, but Palace have come out with much higher threat this half. Kouyate (on for Sacko) has been all over Neto but nothing given by Coote. Neto pulled back quite aggressively by McCarthy who gets a yellow card

😂 Absolutely.

W’ve lost a touch of momentum this half, Palace with much more of the ball, however I don’t feel too concerned at the moment at least. A good opportunity for a few breaks

MGW about to come on

Fabulous move forward by Adama to feed Donk whose shot brings a superb save from Butland. Gibbs-White being prepared.. Another foul throw this time by Clyne, then RAN gets a yellow card for time wasting!!

Inevitably Zaha to come on & replace Benteke. MGW replaces Adama, possibly to save him for Tuesday.

Some good possession for Palace but also good pressing by Wolves. Cutrone ready to replace Silva. Neto breaks and attempts a similar goal to his one against Chelsea but wide. Silva off-for Cutrone

Corner to Palace easily collected by JR and thats it, a good first win in this season’s FA Cup for Wolves. Harder for us in the 2nd half but Palace never had a shot on target so we clearly deserved it with our 5. A well disciplined team performance which should put us in the right mood to face Everton on Tuesday
Wolves 1 Crystal Palace 0

A competent win against a rather lacklustre Palace. Clearly deserved win tonight, though not quite as good in the second half.

Some good positives, Neto, Traore, Donk back, Neves, in fact midfield in general....... good organised and solid defence.

The most important thing in the cup is to be in the hat for the next round, we are with a goal deserving of winning any match ..... it’s been a while coming but congratulations to Traore for a real pile driver!!

Plenty of confidence to take into the next match versus the Toffees

Through to the next round but not really convincing given the opposition.
But a win is a win which has to be good for the boys confidence.
Thought Semedo had a much better game as did Fabio and it was nice to see the Donk back and doing what he does so well. RAN starting to look more confident but must work on his passing!,
Ruddy must be exhausted.

Good performance overall, especially first half when we were very good. Again, though, sadly Fabio had a great chance with the header he put over the bar. I got a little nervy towards the end but looking back, with Palace not getting a shot on target, probably not as nervy as I thought.
Fantastic goal and Neves outstanding all night. After the stat we talked about earlier in the week about his tackling and winning possession more than any other player, I decided to wake up and watch carefully and I have to say you can see where that stat came from.
Good games from Coady, Saiss, Donk, Neto and Samedo had one of his better matches.
Good to be in the next round and hopefully have a good run this year.

I must admit I missed last night that Ruben Neves gets an assist for Adama's goal having made the last pass to find him. I believe that is the first assist by one of our midfielders this season - but well deserved by Ruben who I thought was colossal in midfield throughout the game.

Definitely fancy Chorley, expunge the memory ..... well, probably not. 34 years and 2 months of hurt and all that. What’s more I’m one of the few Wolves fans who didn’t get to any of the matches!! 😂

They are doing the cup draw tonight at 7pm and we’ll be number 5, Chorley number 3.

I wouldn’t mind Argyle either, number 1 ..... for local interest.

Actually following the 4th round draw, the 5th round draw will also take place, will be interesting to see how they work that and who we might get?
