Match Thread: Wolves v Albion 16th January 2021 KO 12.30pm
Get in there Butler!!

We have to win this one!! It seems quite incredible that it was on 12th February 2012, just short of 9 years ago that we last played the Albion. And it is a memory that is sealed in all Wolves fans memories for all the wrong reasons. On that fateful day we lost 5-1 following a frankly toothless and upsetting display, Merlin Mick lost his job and TC got the hotseat … the rest is history. But the result is what mattered, made ten times worse because it was the Baggies. They delighted in our misery but now, after all this time, we have a chance to set the record straight. It is them who are looking at the trap door.
Okay, our form isn’t great. We know that. Just one win v Chelsea in the league since the start of December. Even worse, Albion have won none of their league matches in the same period, losing five (including shipping 5 goals twice versus Leeds and Palace) with two draws, inexplicably versus Manchester City and Liverpool. Overall, however, Big Sam, the Wolves fan, seems not to be having the desired effect.
So what are we to make of today? Firstly, for such an event that means so much, how are the players going to respond? Surely, it is an inevitable consequence of present circumstances that they won’t quite get the gravity of the fixture and they, like us, will be robbed of the true experience of the Black Country Derby. Us sitting at home, unable to influence with our high emotion in the stands might make it just another match. Or will there we enough folk around Molineux to inject the bit of the passion we will want to see? My feeling is that Coady will get it. Whatever the truth, we will want to see a performance to be proud of.
In terms of the team selection, Nuno has some big decisions to make today and we wait to see if the likes of Boly and Traore and others will be available. Personally, today especially, I’d like to see a back four to start with to give us that extra player to push forward and sincerely hope the aforementioned Traore can play on the right hand side. I’d probably stick with Semedo and Ait-Nouri as the full backs, again as attacking ‘picks’, though defensively, they both give me the colly-wobbles. As for the forward line, I’d give Silva a break, the experiment so far has not worked and whilst I can’t see him as a long term solution, I’d give Cutrone the nod.
Whatever the line up, surely we have the quality to take the match to Albion? Neves has been returning to form of late and the shear tenacity and quality of player of the season candidate, Pedro Neto, will frighten any defence. We just need to find a way of getting more bodies in the box.
The Black Country Derby is back. As I have said, we have to win this one. Yes, and be proud of the lads, that would be the icing on the cake. Truth be known, I will take a win of any description and style today!
As for losing today, that isn’t an option, just not going to happen …….. will it?
Enjoy the match, Up The Wolves!! Roar 'um on from your armchair!

He's right, at least from my perspective!!

The continued choice of Silva up front makes me wonder whether Cutrone just isn't match fit, or is not coming up with the goods in training, or whether Nuno just doesn't trust him. Having said all that the only thing missing from today's team really is Raul Jiminez - and perhaps Jonny!!
My thinking is that Big Sam will be concentrating on his defence to stop leaking goals, and it will be up to our midfield to try and unlock it and get our forwards in there to score.
Really looking forward to this game.

Great to see both Boly and Traore and pleased with the likely back four line up. On paper we have much the better side and this should be our match but no complacency. Snodgrass is a player we need to keep an eye on, someone who has caused us difficulties in the past.

Silva has the chance to make himself a Molineux hero today wishing him every bit of luck to do it.
Cmon lads this ones important.
Here we go - come on you Wolves

Soft penalty, bordering on ridiculous

1-1

Only one minute added - after 3 goals and a penalty!! Half time whistle goes and we have the lead after a disappointing start which saw a ver6 soft penalty given against Boly & well converted. Lovely to see Fabio Silva get his first PL goal from open play and then Big Willy get his first goal of the season to avenge the penalty after a superb assist for Fabio’s goal. Now - just as at Brighton - we need to get a few more goals and improve our GD
HT and we’re winning 2-1.
Clearly the better side but I was panicking after that poor penalty award. Then Albion should have made it two.
Great to see Silva score and he hustled the opposition to get his goal which he finished neatly. A great moment for the lad. Then, never far from the action Big Willy marks his return with a great finish albeit from close range. He’s been close or close by to scoring this half already, finally hits the back of the net and earns me £60. What a beauty.
Moreover we are now winning at half time. Thoroughly deserved on play, but scoring twice in a match is a real boost, whoever the opposition, the fact we overturned the Baggies lead makes it so much sweeter. Plenty of time to cock it up however, so concentrate and keep playing possession, give to Neto and Traore on the wings and bobs your uncle!! Hopefully!!

I don’t believe that. Long throw undoes us. Good header 2-2

Wolves 2 WBA 2
Oliver gives another penalty against CC which Pereira puts to the other side of Rui
Wolves 2 WBA 3
2-3. Penalty, Coady clips, slightly albeit it and another penalty award.
Another mountain to climb

Exactly right Ivy!!

Cutrone has got to do better from 10 yards. Should be 3-3

I just don’t know. Mystifying.

Wolves 2 WBA 3
WBA getting all th3 praise, but they were very average, had hardly any shots on target and benefitted from two penalty decisions. The other goal they scored was well taken.
I don’t know what else to say sadly!
Sold down the river by two soft penalties.
Our passing was, in the main, excellent until MGW came on, quite what he contributed to this game I’m not sure.
Neto and Traore were terrific and it should have been a day to remember for Fabio, soured by the loss.
If the substitutions were made to operate in a more attacking style then it does make me wonder why it wasn’t employed from the off against a team we should expect to beat.
Nuno must be scratching his head wondering how he turns this around, with the talented youngsters he is having to play he would be wise to “blood “ them this season in readiness for the next because it looks increasingly unlikely that we will do nothing this season apart from avoid a flirtation with relegation.
Must do better or the better players will be looking forward to getting out with the assistance of uncle Jorge.
Seriously I can't see where the goals are going to come from. Adama & Neto are supplying the balls in the box, but other than Boly we have no players with height, experience or guile there. Donk gets good positions but he's an attacking midfielder not a forward. Podence, Johnny, Jimenez, Marcal, all injured. Neves always seems to follow up good performances by games like today, poor. Likewise Moutinho. Saiss is usually reliable. Ait-Nouri is improving, Nelson better at attacking than defending. Cutrone doesn't look match fit. Coady is not playing as well as last season. I know Nuno wants to change the team to playing 4 at the back, but it's not working. Perhaps the change should be more gradual. Too many unexpected injuries causing young players to take a lot of the burden. Good to see Fabio get his goal.

I must agree LH I believe Willy Billy’s contract expires at the end of this season and look what a difference it made having him back today. I can’t see the likes of Traore hanging around for another season either.
Just watching Brighton winning at Leeds so far - another of the bottom teams putting in a performance, although Burnley are losing at West Ham
Patricio, perfectly adequate and ably assisted by Ruddy so no need for any changes.
Semedo and Hoever, still settling in but showing a good level of skill and commitment, no need for changes.
Boly, Coady, Saiss, all experienced and reliable, backed up by Kilman who has impressed when called upon.
Jonny, Marcal, RAN, a very capable trio so no need to look for upgrades.
Neves, Moutinho, Dendoncker generally reliable and can really put in a shift, backed up by MGW,
Vitinha and Otasowie.
Traore, Neto, Podence, Raul Silva, skilful and quick should be a problem for any defence.
So not really a small squad just one that has had a disproportionate number of key players unavailable through injury simultaneously which would be damaging and difficult for any team to manage. Plus our high ratio of young Portuguese players in this time of isolation and separation from family and friends is having an adverse affect also upon Nuno who will not have seen his family for weeks/months. Football is just a game and is played better with a happy contented squad and I haven’t seen many smiles on the pitch lately. This slump in form is annoying to say the least but I am hopeful that when some of the more experienced return we will see an upturn in our fortunes.
Terrible, awful result. The first penalty may have been just outside the area but it was a foul. Traore once again losing possession and then sits on his @#$%&. Second penalty was correct decision.
Reading the comments on the thread it sounds as though there were some strange substitutions but, as I said, I didn't see the match.
I know some are keen on a back four but this has to stop. For the last three seasons we used a back three every match and were always pretty sound at the back. Now we are leaking goals. I don't know if changing to a four was ever a plan but it seems as though we came across it by chance. we only used in the first place when we only had two available centre-backs against Southampton. It didn't seem as though it was ever planned. For Christ's sake scrap it and go back to what has worked for three years. It's true we have struggled to score enough goals but two should be enough to beat WBA and three should certainly have been enough to beat Brighton.
What with changing the defence, trying to change the way we play and the amount of changes in personnel which, by and large have been forced upon us, we are changing too much at once.
Start by going back to a back three and stay with it.
Rumour has it that Nuno will not be given any funds for transfers this window, is this the root to the other rumour that Mendes is looking to place Nuno elsewhere. Is Mendes our Ally or enemy? Does Mendes' group profit detract from the development of Wolves albeit benefit the Fosun group profits?
Fosun/Jeff Shi please recognise the job Nuno has done, I'm fairly confident you do but you have to back him and replace Diogo Jota with a quality forward, ready to play to Premier league standards, you are looking at several tens of millions else your investment over the time you have guided our club to where we are will take a significant step backwards. Fosun/Jeff, Nuno is our Alex Ferguson he will, with your astute backing, become the best manager Wolves have had since the great 'Sir' Stan Cullis.
Yesterday was awful, the result just dreadful. I don’t know about you lot but I haven’t been able to watch the lowlights yet.
Obviously I wanted to see four at the back yesterday to better support the front line …. Why not? At home versus our locally rivals who have consistently proved their inability to score and have looked in disarray since Big Sam arrived. A pre-match phone call from my Baggies mate just to tell me that they are the worst side they’ve had in the premier league. Yes, four at the back, why not!
Proved wrong! Needless to say, I’ve changed my mind now, keep with what you know, keep the drill. Three centre halves, two wing backs and all the rest that goes on in midfield and up front. We have to return to a system to better shut the back door, else we will keep on losing. Points on the board is what is needed now. Rest assured however, if we do so, the remainder of the season won’t be pretty. 3-5 at the back has already proved even more unlikely to produce goals in the absence of real quality. If we don’t purchase a temporary centre forward or even longer term solution plus / minus a driving forward thinking midfielder with an eye for goal, then we have problems.
Being beat by a team of poor quality hurts badly, even more so it being Albion. It’s ruined my weekend. And despite a substandard performance, that was by no means our worst of the season, at least in my view. I felt we deserved to be in front at 45 but even so, Robinson had that gilt edged chance to make it 2-0 before our comeback. Great to see Silva score who took that chance very nicely and terrific to see Boly having such an impact in both goals.
Second half, we had all the possession but no clout. I still can’t work it all out or explain. No refinement, a lack of cohesion, scattered approach, plain weird. Traore and Neto did their level best to comply with the game plan and both got some decent crosses in. Alas their efforts were thwarted by either nobody being there or a lack of quality. Yet we did have chances, for example, Cutrone missing out from 8-9 yards. That was an agonising metaphor for the whole match for me, as was the quite simply pathetic and disgraceful dive from Silva …… somebody needs to have a word.
But we did score twice, okay not the five like Palace and Leeds, but you have to back us to win having scored twice. The marking for the long throw was so weak but it was finished well and the penalty in the second half was indeed a penalty, Coady clipped him, so no complaints. But the first penalty …….. yes we played poorly, but I don’t get that decision at all.
The substitutes too …… screaming out to get another forward man on early yet it was MGW for Neves. Really?!! MGW did have an impact when he got on ……. Unfortunately it involved giving it away for fun. And Coady for Ait-Nouri – a statement substitution or was Coady that bad? I think the former whilst acknowledging that Conor certainly didn’t have his best in Old Gold.
And Nuno …… what’s with the body language yesterday? I much preferred it when he was getting into trouble by fist pumping like at Ashton Gate, than the recent moans and groans about the ref.
Something isn’t right at the club at the moment is it? Personally, I completely reject calls for Nuno’s head ….. sadly, such opinions are being voiced. We’ve had the smooth and now it’s the rough and he’s earnt the right for time and space to sort things out, but is Nuno getting the support he fully deserves from above? What is the strategy from Fosun to get us out of this slump? Reliance on small squads is all very good and it’s worked, albeit risky, but gaps in key positions cannot be filled by unproven youngsters who might fetch a tidy transfer fee in a few years. Whether we pay £3.5M, £15M or even £35M, new recruits need to be able to play today, not tomorrow.
I am certain things will get better and under Nuno, our best manager for 40 years, not least as some of our more senior players come back on line, but I the transfer policy has to alter to give us a chance of competing and covering key positions.
So where do we go from here? Victory Park, Chorley is the answer.
It can’t possibly happen twice can it? UTW
