Match Thread: Chelsea vs Wolves

Neto Seals It At Home
By Wolves
January 27 2021

Wolves have their first chance of the season to 'do the double' over a team tonight when they travel to Chelsea. The memorable win against his team may have been a contributory factor in the demise of recently sacked Blues boss Frank Lampard.

Perhaps Wolves could have not asked for a better time to visit Stamford Bridge, which has not historically been a particularly happy hunting ground for them. However the Chelsea players will probably be making every effort to impress their new boss Thomas Tuchel who will be at the ground and possibly in the dugout, so it is likely to be a challenging evening for Nuno Espirito Santo and his team, who will all be keen to put in a better performance than the win at non-league Chorley was perceived to be by most observers!!

Unfortunately new loan signing Willian Jose will not be eligible to play in this game, so we will wait to see whether Cutrone or Silva - or both - lead the line tonight. We can reasonably expect Pedro Neto and Adama Traore to start on the wings, and Vitinha may have staked a claim to one of the midfield starting positions after his goal in the last game. It is expected that Marcal and Daniel Podence will still be unfit to start. It's not clear why Morgan Gibbs-White did not make the last squad, so we will have to see if he is included tonight.

Tonight's game will be screened on BT Sport 1HD and will kick off at 18:00hrs. Our referee will be the relative newcomer Andrew Madley

This board will endeavour to keep everyone up to date with the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to otherwise follow it.

Six changes to our starting Xl tonight, and perhaps surprisingly Daniel Podence starts up front with Traore and Neto. Kilman replaces Saiss in defence and Rui returns in goal. An attacking line-up for sure, and Willian Jose is on the bench for good measure!! Line-up:

Good to see Podence return but I guess we won’t be slinging many crosses in. With no target man it will be interesting to see what variations of corners we opt for this evening or do we just rely on Dendoncker?
Cmon lads Chelsea may just be there for the taking.

Great to see Kilman get the nod.

What is the situation with Willian Jose? He’s on the bench but I thought he was ineligible tonight too?? Anyway, they’ll be a very different style to our front line if he gets on ........ we are a bit ‘airily challenged’ to start off with.

Adama may play down the middle with DP & Neto on the wings. Holocaust Day being marked with a minute’s silence before kick-off

Two or three very worrying Chelsea crosses coming in. This will be a real challenge for Semedo and Ait Nouri

Hudson-Odoi puts a superb ball across our area but nobody thereto connect. Wolves being hemmed into their own area. Chilwell gets C’sea’s first corner but wasted. Neto & DP start to combine & get into Chelsea half. Now Semedo goes on a run but his pass to Adama fails

Chelsea are commanding the midfield unsurprisingly. Neto manages to break up the right wing and has to cross as three men on him, but nobody there to get on the end of it. Wolves are having to defend and are doing so well so far

DP clattered across the face accidentally by Rudiger for a free kick on the edge of their area for Neves to take, but he can’t keep it down. Now DP is stopped by Thiago Silva & they’re both hurt.

Pint sized Podence in the wars, first he got one in the face due to his size and now, much the same a collision with Thiago.

The first one resulted in a free kick from 20-22 yards - a disappointing Neves effort over the bar

Couple of corners to Chelsea. Indecision in Chelsea defence gives us a throw in high up. CC getting some attention for a bloody nose. Neto gets another throw in closer to the flag but we lose possession. Hudson-Odoi puts a ball right across which Chilwell puts out. Thirty minutes gone

Good play by Wolves through the middle ends with NS getting our first corner. Slack passing gives possession away to Chelsea. Chilwellgets a lucky free kick which Rudiger gets to but Rui collects well

there are some signs of green shoots from Wolves in an otherwise fairly sterile attacking 40 minutes. Our best move on the left with Neto getting a cross in for Donk who cant get enough on the header. I hope we can get to HT all square

DP feeds Neto who puts it across the area. Donk gets into the area & heads it just over - our first attempt on goal from open play. Chelsea are passing prolifically but so far we are containing well in our defence

RAN has his work cut out tonight trying to cope with Hudson-Odoi’s runs down the wing. On the other wing NS has coped well with Chilwell getting down the left. 3 added minutes to play. 94% possession to Chelsea first half!!! Half time whistle goes and all square. Adama has seen very little of the ball, so will be interesting to see how Nuno manages the second half.

One things for sure, we are not a side who will excite the neutrals 😂

HT and 0-0.

After a few alarming early scares from crosses we have defended well and stoutly. The central three and two wing back looking steadier than recently. I think that is what was needed.

As an attacking force, bar one tor two rare forays, we have created next to nothing. Is this a match for a win against the run and possession with a one off attack on a break with pace. Even that seems unlikely at present but we know with Wolves, each half rarely produces a similar performance!!

Still very much in it.

We're obviously playing to a Nuno plan, conceding all the possession. Just hope that the 2nd. half plan is to score some goals.

Well we weathered the storm and seem to be getting a bit of a foot in the game.
All Chelsea for the first 30 minutes but the defence held up well. Would be good to see our new signing come on and perhaps protect Podence from further damage. Traore not getting on the ball, that needs to change in the second half..
Still all to play for.

As we prepare for the second half., Ki-Jana Hoever replaces RAN, with NS going across to the left side, probably to deal with the threat from Hudson-Odoi. Lee Mason is on VAR duty tonight, but even he doesn’t think their claim for a penalty is valid after a clash between NS & Havertz

Adama needs some studs on his boots as he is continually slipping over!! Neto clashes with Jorginho who goes down like a sack of shlt! Yellow card for Neto.

First decent run by Adama abruptly stopped by a foul. Kilman fouls Ziyech for a free kick 30 yds out. Cleared by Hoever good defending by CC to prevent Giroud getting a header in.

Good opportunity for Chilwell but he skies it. Now he gets a yellow card for a foul on Adama. Free kick is totally wasted!

Play well worked down the right by Chelsea & Giroud gets a weak shot on target. Great block by Donk but offside called. Raining quite heavily now. Good break by Neto but nobody to pass to again.

Foul on Adama & free kick but eventually Neto blasts it over. Pulisic & Abraham replace Chilwell & Giroud. I really think Pulisic is a danger to us! Burnley beating Villa 3-2

Into the last ten minutes & CC concedes a corner heading out a fierce shot. Foul on Rui.
Wolves still just about coping with the Chelsea threat. Kovacic ser up just outside the area but shoots just wide. Mount replaces Zyiech.

Correct about Pulisic Chesh. Just skinned Semedo and a great shot goes wide. I seem to remember him having Semedo on toast in the 1st half at Molineux

Five minutes of normal time to play. A good run by Adama upends with a very lazy pass giving it away. Good save by Rui to stop a deflected shot. A draw would be a good result for us tonight we just have to stay alert & wish for good luck!!

Good clearance by Willy Boly. Great ball across the Chelsea area by Neto but Donk is robbed by Hudson-Odoi as he tries to control it. Adama replaced by Joao as we enter 3 added minutes

The press see this as being all about Tuchel but Nuno must be given credit for getting the draw which we have just achieved with the final whistle. Chelsea will be criticised for a lack of piercing play but Wolves have defended well and attacked when possible. A Jose header prevented a goal from a corner in the final seconds. Four points from Chelsea this season and the point keeps us clear of Burnley

A hard earned point and the defence played exceptionally well really suffocating the Chelsea attack.
Still concerned about our lack of midfield presence and our passing at times was atrocious often giving away when we had chances to press forward. Did Willian actually touch the ball?
As some of my teachers used to say, “must do better “.

Yes LH Jose stopped a goal bound header in the last seconds! He also had a few touches before that and was involved in the build up to the chance which Donk just failed to control.

Another tough match to watch!!

But a great point given the last 2 months.

I think that could be categorised as an ultra defensive Wolves performance ........ but we needed not to lose and tighten things up at the back. And that we did with a clean sheet. The three CBs played excellently, getting their head / body to many across and thwarting the Chelsea forward play.

Of course, the deep defending, to include the midfield, came at a cost and we rarely looked like creating a chance or piece of attacking football to excite us ...... and then Neto got his chance and hit the bar! So close

Would agree with Lupine, we do give the ball away cheaply, possibly the worst example of the lot was Traore when in a great advance position and after great dribbling skill he inexplicably and tamely passed to a blue shirt.

Willian didn’t feature much and so impossible to assess, however I can see he has a far greater physical presence that Silva, of that I am certain! We also have him to thank for being in the right place to clear a big Chelsea chance right at the death.

Crystal Palace next ........ that’s definitely one to win.

Well, once again we didn't look like scoring but that being said, Rui only had one serious save to make and that wasn't until 5 mins. from the end.
We look much more solid defensively with a back three/five, it suits Boly and Coady much better. Kilman came in and did well and was unlucky I thought to lose his spot in the first place but then again, Saiss had been playing well and was unlucky to lose his place.
Good decision by Nuno to swap Samedo to the left at half-time and Samedo did pretty well. Ait-Nouri was having a tough old time against Hudson-Odoi.
All in all a decent point.
