Another Midland derby to enjoy today! A 5.30pm kick off this afternoon where, with any luck, Wolves can get their own back on Villa after two sending’s off and a last-minute injury time penalty winner for them in December. It would be fantastic to break their bubble a bit and get closer to them in the league and in a position to leapfrog them. This would not be unreasonable would it?!!
It’s sure to be another tight affair with selection issues, as ever, for both sides. Dean Smith has suggested Grealish will not be playing despite being pain free – though I wonder about that. Grealish certainly makes Villa tick, and I’ll be honest, they are a different proposition without him.
For us, perhaps the biggest selection question for Nuno and us fans will be whether Big Willy makes a return to the first eleven. If he is fit, I certainly hope so. Shuffling the pack in the back three would not be an issue for me, we simply play better with him. Boly – Coady – Saiss / Kilman is a better balance, in which case I would like to see Donk keep a place to partner Neves.
In terms of formation up front, Neto, Traore with one from Fabio / Willian for me. On the latter, I would not be at all surprised if Nuno re-opted for Fabio today, at least on a few flashes in recent matches.
Whatever the final eleven, one would hope that versus Villa, we will make more of a game of it in the first 45 compared to the efforts versus Manchester City, yes superb opposition, but for me, we gave them too much respect …… get in at ‘um today!
A few stats for you, new and old. In all matches it’s Villa 56, Wolves 41, draw 32, so we have a bit of catching up to do, but Wolves have yet to post a victory this season on a Saturday! Villa’s form since boxing day has certainly dipped, losing 6 from 12 with 4 wins and 2 draws. For us, Southampton is our only win in the last nine away matches, drawing 3 and losing 5. And yes, if we need any reminding, we have only scored first in a match on one occasion (v Leeds) in the last 17 league matches.
It’s a great old fixture, plenty of passion amongst the fans and it would certainly be sweet to get the win at Villa Park. I’ve had a fantastic walk up on Dartmoor this morning, bracing, enthralling and energising ……. Beating the Villa would be the absolute icing on the cake!!

Don't know if some of the older readers watch the Big Match Revistited on a Saturday morning? A bit London-centric but some great stuff. A couple of weeks ago, our match versus Villa from October 1979 and at Molineux was shown. 36,267 with the New Stand resplendent and only half a mile from the pitch. It's a good watch ...... and a little bit of an on-field boxing match with a surprising outcome!

Very little positive to say about that half. Maybe, except after they hit the bar, we’ve defended crosses and set pieces pretty well.
No shot and never looked likely in that half.
Second half syndrome perhaps? Hope so

If we try a little bit harder we can really gift this game to Villa!!
Passing has been atrocious.
Need to get players into the Villa box and get some crosses in, at the moment we present very little threat.
Once again we are riding our luck.

Good cross by Adama just deflected over Neto’s head for a corner headed down by CC to Saiss who puts it over the bar from a yard out. Unbelievable!!

Not one ball has gone into our area and been met by Willian Jose. Free kick 35 yds out to Wolves cleared, but Jose fouled & another free up kick - central. Three man play & Neves puts it over the bar. Silly foul by Jose but cleared.

Villa corner headed out by Elmohammedy. Neto runs with it but his pass is high & wide. Too man6 mistakes being made! Cheap foul given in favour of Jonny for Neto to put in, it goes to CC but he can’t beat Martinez from a yard out!!

Neto goes down dramatically holding his face after being caught by Targett’s hand but he’s OK. Most of the play now is in the Villa half but few real chance coming our way. Villa’s Traore replaced by Ramsey after a quiet game for him.

Mings down injured before a Villa corner can be taken, but he can carry on. Good save by Rui before Konsa fires wide. Jonny breaks but stopped. Neves gets in for a header but denied.

Willian Jose adds nothing to the team in my opinion, he never collects the ball and attacks and is seldom on the end of a ball into the area. The team is badly missing Podence who at least brings some attacking penetration and variety of approach. Traore is really not bringing much to the party and at one point in the match I did think that if he were replaced by RAN it would bring a better outcome,.

Much better in the second half. The miss by Saiss was unbelievable, I can only put it down to the fact that he was stretching but perhaps I'm being generous.

Awful first half again really lucky to be level ht , when will they finally play for 90 minutes it's becoming a joke. Should of won the game 2nd half we have missed some great chances. Adama was his usuall bone idle self and I'm still waiting for jose to have a shot at goal in a game! draw was probably a fair result we just have no cutting edge up front. My god how we miss raul!

Pretty much agree with all comments - Traore incredibly disappointing, when will Willian score, sorry I mean be in a position to shoot, a general lack of creativity up front, our passing at times was dreadful with multiple culprits, although accuracy improves when we go backwards. Arrg. Our ongoing and consistent inability to go for 90 is appalling to be honest.
And yes, I’ll jump on the bandwagon and say that Silva, on balance, should probably get the nod on Willian. Mind you, although he got a foul after after some good skill on the half way line, when he had that breakaway down our right wing, his lack of pace was there for all to see.

I think Ian Wright highlighted our problem upfront on Match of the Day perfectly, by showing Jiminez in action and Willian Jose's inaction. He never picks up the ball in the opponent's half and runs with it at defenders but always looks to lay it off. When he has given the work to someone else he then fails to get into a dangerous position and our wingers are unable to find him with crosses. Whilst not defending Adama - as I think he has become selfish and inefficient - he and Neto still have no front man to aim for, and Adama used to find Jiminez regularly with quality crosses.
