Match Thread: Wolves vs Sheffield United

Strikers!
By Wolves
April 17 2021

After taking all three points in a perhaps surprising win at Bramall Lane in the opening game of the season, Wolves tonight welcome Sheffield United to Molineux for a game which could seal the Yorkshire club's Premiership fate.

Goals from Raul Jiminez and Romain Saiss secured the points away from home, and fans will be hoping for another good performance against United this evening. Football fans will no doubt have been astonished at the fall from grace of United this season, after such a promising first term last season. They have been bottom of the League just about the whole season after securing only 14 points from 4 wins and 2 draws. They also have injury problems with strikers Oli McBurney and Billy Sharpe out for the rest of the season and John Fleck unfit to play today.

Wolves miserable season of injuries and Covid related issues has continued unabated with the news that star performer Pedro Neto has had to have surgery to a fractured patella following the Fulham game and is likely to be out for 6 to 9 months. This is on top of the recurrent injury to Jonny, and the continued absence of Jiminez and Marcal. There is also concern that Joao Moutinho may also be unfit for this game despite coming on as a sub at Fulham, and Ruben Neves is isolating after testing positive for Covid-19. So there may well be an opportunity for one of Nuno's youngsters to step up to the plate for this game and make a name for themselves. The good news is that Willy Boly is back in contention to play after enforced isolation.

Tonight's game will be screened by Sky Sports and will kick off at 8:15pm.

Our referee tonight will be the relative newcomer Robert Jones, with Chris Kavanagh on VAR duty.

This board will carry regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for those unable to otherwise follow it.

Well Nuno has decided not to play the youngsters, although plenty of them are on the bench! It turns out Joao Moutinho is fit to play and he is joined by Donk in midfield. Willian Jose is given another chance up front to score his first goal for the club. Line-up:

A good team selection and if things go well there should be opportunities for one or two of the youngsters to get some match time. I would like to see a bit more of Owen Otasowie after his last two appearances he needs the chance to make amends and build his confidence.
Fabio no doubt will get some time unless of course Jose goes on the rampage!!
Would prefer Vitinha over Gibbs-White if either get an outing.
Should be three points tonight anything less and we will have underperformed.

Evening.

Perhaps the best side at our disposal, maybe bar Kilman for Saiss ...... however I’m finding it difficult to get up for this one tonight after such turgid recent performances. Nevertheless a win would take us over the 40 point mark and that would be nice.

We really should win this match, no question about it ...... though I can easily see it being a draw.

We’ll see, UTW!

Evening both
I tend to agree with LH that Nuno needs to give some of the youngsters an opportunity when he can, and Vitinha need# another couple of run outs before the end of the season to see whether he should be signed permanently - or perhaps they already know!!

Positive start from Utd and they get the first corner off RAN which is easily collected by NS. For some reason Boly is on the left of defence & Saiss is on the right!

Two encouraging pieces of play, a great Semedo run forward and an excellent Willian ball to put Traore away ..... came to nothing ...... but as said, encouraging

First successful dribble & cross from Adama earns a corner. DP gets another on the other side. Boly almost scores with a back flick!!

John Fleck takes a shot from 25 yds but it sails over the bar. Ampadu warned after a cynical foul on DP. Frustrating watching Wolves at the moment - some good ideas but poor execution

Adama wins a header in their area which comes down for DP but he hits it too high. Poor back pass puts DP in, it eventually comes to RAN who shoots right footed & brings out a save.

Ampadu fouls DP again but still no punishment. Free kick comes to nothing. RAN goes over the ball & hurts Brewster. Brewster gets a yellow card but VAR. say that’s all that’s needed.

DP hasn’t got a killer pass in him tonight! 40 mins gone and still no sign of a 1st half goal for Wolves.

Corner to Wolves but Utd break from it & earn a free kick as we enter one added minute.

Whistle goes and the first half of total rubbish ends. It’s a good job there are no fans paying to watch this turgid stuff. No spark of imagination or brilliance from anyone, and as always a constant series of back passes in the absence of attacking football.

Watching this so difficult. Same old routines, same old outcomes.
Good to see Boly back and he looks quite fresh from his rest.
How does Jose manage to disappear on a pitch that is so small?
Need to do better in the second half and much better next season although the signs are not good.

Here we go again with no changes to either side. Wolves attack after good control by Adama, but Semedo’s effort is easily taken by Ramsdale

Utd are giving it a good go, but no real threat in the final third. Willian Jose never ever picks up the ball and attacks with it, always choosing to pass backwards. Good pass to get RAN into the box, but he smashes it across to nobody!!

At last Jose gets his goal after good attacking play by Adama and a pass for him to convert with his right foot. No VAR. write off for this one!!

Great to see Willian score ...... it had to happen and a good goal. This moments after Blades should have taken the lead!

Vitinha to replace Podence. Very good play by Utd before Stevens tips a fierce shot over. Podence gets a deserved yellow card for a poor challenge, giving a free kick just outside our area., but a dreadful free kick by Norwood.

Yes I noticed that on the replay Ivy - he certainly didn’t rush to congratulate Jose did he?!!

Great save by Rui from a Norwood shot before Mousset flagged for offside. Stevens booked for a foul on Adama who is getting fed up with being fouled. Ramsdale does well to keep out Saiss from the free kick. Utd break but mess up the final pass.

Adama sets up Silva but he slips as he shoots. Adama tries to repeat his Fulham goal but fires very wide.

All over and sad to say it sees Sheffield Utd relegated from the Premier League falling to a 1 - 0 defeat at Molineux. A poor game with little to enthuse about for either team. A very good break and pass by Adama for Jose to score his maiden Wolves goal was the only bright point of the match. We missed Neto and Neves in my view. However we now have 41 points which should mean we are safe!!

Well the difference in class was not there to see which is an ongoing worry.
Well taken goal by Jose but no player was a standout and three points in the bag even if unconvincing buys us time to sort something out before next season.

Not a good match.
First half terrible, second half not much better. A good break for the goal, good defending from Semedo , Podence did well, which was about the only good thing he did in a poor performance, and a good ball by Dendoncker to put Traore away.
Can't think of anything else positive to say.
On a side issue, the fact that linesmen are not allowed to flag immediately for offsides does my head in.

Another bright, lively, often scintillating performance with an edge of the seat feel to the whole 90 minutes ............. oh wait, that was my dream when I fell to sleep!

Oh well, it’s a win and got Willian off the mark with a well worked goal and a very neat finish. The upside is that in better seasons we have really struggled to end up with 3 points versus poorer opposition e.g. Huddersfield etc. Now after Fulham and Blades we finish up with 6 points. It’s ironic really.

Nevertheless this result is harsh on an enterprising Sheffield United team who ultimately are lacking the quality in front of goal, to an even greater extent than us.

Overall, a strange performance for Wolves, lacking pace, ideas and movement all over the pitch except on a few isolated occasions. Traore got into to some good positions late on and I was very disappointed with some of his decision making, even so, he supplied the killer movement and pass for the goal. Maybe a bit better in defence tonight, having said that, a better side than Blades surely would have finished a couple of the opportunities created.

41 points is a total we would have dreamt of in many past seasons, so that’s great, but it’s been somewhat turgid to follow over long periods ......... Burnley next, so expect another classic!!

UTW!

A wins a win but it was a poor performance in a game that was nearly as boring as the fa cup semi final earlier! Happy jose finally got his goal tonight but I'm still not convinced he's up to the standard we need.

Hi Irish, I’m not yet convinced, but unless something happens, transfer or resolution of injuries, then I am worried. Our last 22matches have yielded 24 points so there is absolutely no room for error or further ‘transition’.

Mind you if the detritus nominally known by some and the shister 6 leave, it could be easier 😳
