Wolverhampton Wanderers at Euro 2021

We may have experienced an indifferent Wolves season, however in the end we more than did enough to fight another day in the Premier League ….. albeit now with a new manager. Despite our sometimes ponderous play, on the international scene, the recognition of our team has reached new heights with a total of 7 players being selected to represent their respective countries in the forthcoming Euro 2021 tournament. I for one cannot remember such a total, if ever.
This is an incredible recognition of how far we have come as a club over the last 4 years since Nuno took over and under the stewardship of Fosun …. who would have thought we would have so many players part and parcel of, arguably, the second biggest international football tournament in the World?
There is the other side of the coin. A number of sources in the general and social media have expressed concerns and drawn attention that many of our players need a rest and recoup after a full programme of two COVID adversely affected league seasons plus the rigours of a magnificent Europa league run.
Whatever your personal viewpoint over this dilemma, it is surely an honour and an endorsement of the current crop of players we have at Molineux. Wolves are being noticed!!
The roll of honour is as follows:
Belgium - Leander Dendoncker
England - Conor Coady
Portugal - Rui Patricio, Nelson Semedo, Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho
Spain - Adama Traore
Congratulations to them all, let’s hope they have a good tournament and fingers crossed, injury free and they enjoy a slightly extended rest depending on the success of their country. On a personal level, I’d love to see Conor involved in an England side that goes a very, very long way!! We live in hope.
The tournament starts on Friday 11th June, Belgium’s first match is versus Russia at 8pm on Saturday 12th June, England’s first v Croatia is 2pm on Sunday 13th June, Spain start on Monday 14th v Sweden at 8pm and Portugal kick off versus Hungary at 5pm on Tuesday 15th June.
Who will get picked and play?

With the first round of the group matches over for the Wolves lads, I think of the four that have been involved so far, Dendoncker and Semedo have put in fairly sound performances and, to an extent, so did Rui but I would imagine he was relieved to see that goal disallowed to save his blushes a bit.
As usual at this time of year, the rumour mill is in full swing and I see that in various places we have been linked with Danilo. No idea how much truth there is in this but I thought he was pretty solid too.

Yep, every team has now played.
As for our lads, I agree, I thought Donk looked pretty solid and did a lot of the 'dirty work' in the Belgium victory. Semedo, again looked decent yesterday, though I confess, I was hoping for a Hungary upset, not least as I predicted a draw ..... but as great a footballer as he is, I really am not fan of Ronaldo! Typical he popped up with two goals in the last 10 minutes. Rui was fornuate with that near post goal which was chalked off, other than that, not a great deal to do, and a last gasp cameo from Moutinho.
Watching Spain, kept thinking in the second half ..... get Traore on ..... but that didn't happen, despite them really needing something different.
Happy with the England win, would have been even happier if Conor had have got on, however I think it unlikely he wil feature on Friday either.

And let’s not forget that some of our currently injured players could also have made the cut giving us an even greater contingent of international players, would we then have the highest number of club players at the tournament? I’ll leave others to work that out.

I'm not just saying this to find a place in the side for Coady but I think play him in defensive midfield. He's a midfielder by trade and played in defence for the last four years so theoretically it seems a sound move to me. More to the point though, is look at his range of passing, the balls he can ping all over the pitch. Rice and Phillips get nothing going.
The performance all round was pathetic. Taking Foden off didn't make sense to me either, he was the only player that looked like making anything happen. The only one to show any urgency was Pickford and he's the @#$%& goalkeeper.
By the way, if Wolves play with a back four next season, might it not be an idea to play Coady defensive midfield for us as well?

Coady’s forward thinking play certainty wouldn’t harm our efforts and couldn’t agree more, we need a play maker to split the Rice / Yorkshire Pirlo combination, who did well v Croatia, but it was clear they weren’t creating yesterday. No idea why Foden was subbed either. Again, agree with Pickford. Despite his topsy turvey Everton form, he’s never really let the England side down.

Having just watched Spain draw with Poland, you do wonder if Traore is in the Spanish squad only to make up the numbers. Again, similar to the Sweden match, Adama remained on the bench when the Spanish side desperately needed something different to create a bit of time and space and generate an opening. Too slow and deliberate.
Disappointing, thought we’d see him tonight and the last 20 minutes would have been right up Adama’s tree!

3rd match update ahead of the final Group F matches. Donk and Coady were benched and great that Traore got a 13 minute run out v Slovakia today in the Spanish 5-0 victory.
For Portugal, Moutinho has been picked tonight and starts with Rui and Semedo. Jota, of course, supports the front line.
Great entertainment for the early matches today, the finale of Group F tonight is massive … for them and England!

Great match between Portugal and France.
All four Wolves lads did well especially Semedo. Never a penalty and hopefully the injury is not too serious. A fantastic double save from Rui in the 2nd half and Joao also had a good match. Neves getting his first bit of action. How long some of them will be Wolves players is another matter but at the moment they are and they did us proud.

That was quite a night of football, both Portugal v France and Germany v Hungary. Brilliant topsy turvey tournament football at its best where we end up playing Germany, yet again.
Semedo indeed looked good, principally going forward, that Rui double save was great, Moutinho was quiet with some below par crossing and Neves got on! Out of the Wolves players, That only leaves Coady without any minutes on the pitch. Come on Gareth!

Moutinho and Rui started started tonight. Moutinho had a quiet match and Rui coming in for some criticism for the Belgium goal which I think, overall, is harsh - a great fizzing strike from T Hazard. A very good match where Portugal fell short. Even Donk got on the pitch for all of 30 second!! Jota has a couple of chances and really should have scored in the first half.

Well, that performance took me by surprise. Great stuff, and a good word for Conor Coady and the others who haven't played from Southgate afterwards.

Brilliant night for England and all England fans! Can't quite remember feeling so relaxed watching England, the lads in complete control for the vast majority of the match.
As for Southgate, I saw his interview too, incredibly quick to praise all of the squad and their contribution to the team effort who haven't yet played, and yes Conor was the first on the list. He's an impressive manager. As for Conor, I would just love to see him on the pitch, however surely Southgate won't mix the pack too much, in particular at the back?
For the record, going into the semi final, only 5 England players haven't had any match experience, Ramsdale, Johnstone, Coady, Chilwell and White

Great result and a good match to watch. As you say Ivy, relaxing and enjoyable. However I do wonder if England were really good or Ukraine were really quite poor. Tougher tests to come so let’s wait and see if we are able to up the anti when the challenge comes.

So Adama bowed out last night, almost getting on (!!) in a belter of a semi final.
Only Conor left now, found this on the BBC this afternoon, a testament to the character and inspiration to Conor Coady.
