Match Thread: Wolves vs Newcastle United

By Wolves
October 2 2021

Wolves fans will be especially keen today to see their team bring their way-winning form to Molineux and give them the first home win of the season against the Magpies

After achieving another away win at Southampton on Sunday, fans will be hoping to see our team bring a stop to the list of home losses already this season and establish the team in mid-table for now.

Newcastle have failed to win so far this season and, coupled wth the fact that several of their key players such as Callum Wilson and Jonjo Shelvey are out injured, today may be viewed as a ideal time to play them. However in recent seasons a win has not proved easy to achieve against them, with both of the last two home games finishing in a 1 - 1 draw.

Head Coach Bruno Lage has not declared any further injuries to the Wolves squad, but has said that Rayan Ait-Nouri is now available after his enforced concussion rest. Willy Boly is also clearly fit and available so it will be interesting to see whether Bruno decides to keep the same defence or possibly introduces a back four for this game.

Today's game kicks off at 3pm and will be officiated by Graham Scott with Andre Marriner on VAR duty

This board will attempt to provide regular updates on its progress and we will hope to be able to find a stream to do so which hasn't always proved possible recently. Members are also encouraged to post their own observations.

The team:

Wolves: Sa, Kilman, Coady, Saiss, Semedo, Moutinho, Neves, Marcal, Trincao, Jimenez, Hwang

Subs: Ruddy, Hoever, Ait-Nouri, Podence, Boly, Silva, Dendoncker, Traore, Cundle

Marcal keeps his place, Hwang and Trincao in but Boly, Donk and Traore on the bench

I'm more disappointed to see Marcal hold on to his place after what I think were two dreadful showings in the last two matches Ivy. His passing was appalling at Southampton and I would like to have seen Rayan Ait-Nouri given a run out. I would also have thought it time to bring the right footed Boly back in to defence and put Kilman on the left in pace of Saiss, although Saiss had a good game last week. Pleased to see Neves back in the control room, but feel a bit for Donk.

Obviously Bruno is unafraid of juggling the squad as he sees fit.
Newcastle have a catalogue of injuries so we have very few excuses today and need to take advantage. First home win is a must.

I'm also a little surprised to see Marcal retain his place after his last two performances but I suppose he did make a solid start to the season. Would have liked to see Dendoncker in the side.
Hoping I can get a decent stream for this as I've hardly seen a ball kicked in the previous three matches.

Anyway, eyes down, we’ll be off in 5 minutes

By the way, does anybody have ‘alternative’ streaming options

St Maximin down hurt after a challenge from CC & it looks painful. We’re giving away free kicks freely at the moment so Tykes are getting all the action.

Battling tackle from Jimenez and a beautiful through ball from him to Hwang who finished with aplomb from a very tough angle.

Brilliant 🤩

Wolves are busy and well organised now, passing the ball around very nicely and looking threatening in attack. Trink gets a free kick ten yds outside their area just over hit by Neves.

Amazing what a goal does. We score and having looked very tentative overall and prior to the goal, we now appear on the front foot.

Moutinho soots on target from range but saved!!

Encouraging

Trink tries a shot from outside the area but wildly high. Good teamwork eventually sets up Joao for a shot from outside the area but easily collected. Joe Willock down for 2nd time for Tykes & not looking good for him. He’s wanting to stay on though.

Willock down again and to be replaced by Jeff Hendricks. Saiss is doing very well in managing the threat that Almiron poses so far.

Corner to Tykes, well cleared but then Saiss gives away possession, but they can’t cope with it!!
Scruffy play at the back which Jose has to clear. Great tackle by Neves to set Chee free, he crosses and Trink smashes it against the bar!!

What a poor miss from Trincao. Lovely run down the right from Hwang crossed over, open goal smashed onto the bar, goes up the other, Sa gets out of position with a good save and Hendricks smashes it into the net.

Instead of 2-0 it’s 1-1.

So frustrating

Calamitous play at the back. As came out to clear the ball and was clattered by Joelinton. Ref was going to blow for Sa as he was down, bu he then got up, ball went to Hendricks who smashed it in. No foul on Sa seen by VAR. Neves should have cleared the ball better. Bruno gets a yellow card for his comments!

Half time 1-1.

Utterly utterly frustrating we are not winning this.

Half time whistle goes. A strange half really with too many fouls conceded at the beginning, but we then settled into our stride and Utd offered little. A very well made and taken goal by Hee Chan Hwang to put us in the lead for the first time at home this season, in fact anywhere this season. Trincao should have made it 2-0 after being perfectly set up, but his shot smashed against the bar. Inevitably St Maximin then made the difference, and Hendrick converted from outside the box. As should have stayed down when he was hurt as the ref was about to blow up.
We need another great Wolves second half performance in this game

Much better play going forward and a great first goal, so well taken. Our defence does seem to get flustered when pressed so some half time words of advice required from Bruno to settle them down a bit. We would have been hailing Trincao if that had gone in, but showed confidence to put his boot through it, unlucky.
Raul really looking back to his best thankfully. Hee-Chan seems to have settled into this system extremely well.
Second half requires more of the same and I’m sure that we can squeeze a victory out of this soggy afternoon.

Agree we should be more than capable of putting the same kind of effort to get the 3 points, however for me, Trincao should have scored, Hwang absolutely laid it on a plate for him. Anyway, perhaps he’ll get the winner!!

Off we go, second half attacking the South Bonk

No changes at half time. Utd playing a 5-4-1 formation. We’re struggling to get a grip on the ball so far. Free kick to Utd ends with a shot from close range by St Maximan which brings a great save by Jose. Corner eventually cleared.

Dangerous free kick 25 yards from the Wolves goal.

My stream has gone!!

The commentator has picked up on a point that’s been frustrating me too. Far too often we get in advanced wide positions and just don’t get it in the box, instead sideways and backwards it goes. Maybe Traore could make a bit of a difference in the last 20 - to seal the match.

Unless the score has changed already …….. who knows anymore!

I think Trincao has run his race today and time to give Adama a run out. Into the last ten minutes, & fans cheer as we get a free kick for a foul on Joao. Comes to nothing, Utd break, good interception by Saiss to stop Joelinton. We need another goal to put a cap on this game & get 3 points as Utd attack & get a corner

Apparently Donk is coming on.

We have started to invite Newcastle attacks a little.

Two really well taken goals by our new found striker Hee Chan Hwang get us the points in a hard fought win. Newcastle mounted as much attack as they could in the second half and pinned us back at times. Our defence struggles with them at times but survived. I thought our 3 central defenders all did well. Marcal’s passing out was still awful and I fail to see what he brings to the side. Our front three worked hard and created some really positive opportunities which deserved better outcomes.
Raul’s positive and unselfish work leading to the second was was absolutely commendable, but Hwang took both his goal impeccably from tight angles, and he is a very positive addition to our strike force.
Great afternoon for our home fans after the previous frustrations & let’s hope we can take this on to Villa park next Saturday

Three points thank goodness, but hard earned. Some really good passages of play spoilt too often by some poor choice of pass, sometimes the simple things are the best. Greater team cohesion on display today so Bruno must be getting his ideas across on the training ground. Kilman, Raul and Hee-Chan the standouts for me today although no one let themselves down.
A bit of daylight between us and the lower part of the table which is heartening.

We win 2-1!!

First home goals, first home win and it’s not 1-1 v Newcastle.

Once again, episodes of classy football, this time twice, have turned the match in our favour. Very happy with the with win lifts us up the table. Currently (but with other matches to go) we are 10th!!

Definitely not the ‘Bruno ball’ seen in the early matches of this season, in fact I’d say we were pretty negative at times in the second half, or at the very least let’s say unadventurous. Nevertheless a win is a win is a win. Not sure our tactics would have worked out against some other opposition. We also really need to sort out what our players are doing when they have chance to cross the ball. Semedo and Trincao both seeming more comfortable to pass it back than cross.

I sound a bit grumpy, I’m not, because the big positives about this performance was our front line and how they linked up so well - - by that I mean Hwang Hee Chan and Raul - good understanding there ….. perhaps the embryo of a very good partnership? Very impressed with HHC, not just for his finishing which today was excellent but also the way he puts himself about. Very good indeed and you don’t need to look much further for the MOTM.

9 points. That’s okay. Internationals again now, then Villa at Villa Park on 16th October. Looking forward to that!!

Great win, UTW!!

Hard fought 3 points but I will take that all day. 2 cool finishes from chan dare I say it he could be a good find by wolves, and some great play by raul who is starting to look himself again. Now 3 points at villa park in 2 weeks please lads. Just a word on this it's a disgrace it's not being shown live on sky or bt , if it was the Manchester, Merseyside or London derby spurs v arsenal we all know they are shown, as we know sky and bt think the midlands doesn't exist. Anyway there loss should be a good game and hopefully 3 points to the wolves.
