Match Thread: FA Cup 4th Round - Wolves vs Norwich City

Up For The Cup
By Wolves
February 5 2022

Wolves seek to proceed to the 5th round of the 2022 Emirates FA Cup today by beating fellow Premier League team Norwich City

After their win against Sheffield United in the 3rd Round, coupled with three consecutive Premiership wins in January, Wolves will be in confident mood against today's opponents who have struggled to establish themselves in the top league this season. However results have improved for new Manager Dean Smith's team to lift them off the bottom - where they have spent most of the season - into 17th place, so they will certainly need to be shown respect today.

Wolves will have Raul Jimenez and Romain Saiss back from international duty, but coach Bruno Lage may opt to rest them and continue with Fabio Silva and Toti Gomes in the starting Xl. There doesn't appear to be any new injury concerns within the squad, and it can be guessed that new signing Chiquinho will be on the bench again, especially now that Traore has departed to Barcelona. None of those on the injury list are able to rejoin the squad yet. January Manager of the Month Bruno will also be conscious that his team also have a challenging game to play on Thursday, so he may want to keep some players in reserve for that. Similarly Norwich host Crystal Palace on Wednesday, so Dean Smith may have that at the back of his mind in terms of survival when selecting today's team.

The match will kick off at 3pm and will be referreed by David Coote with Paul Tierney on VAR duty.

This board will hope a reliable stream will enable regular updates to be posted during the game. Board members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

As suspected Ruddy, Fabio and Toti start but otherwise an unchanged team. Raul is on the bench but no Trincao. Line-up:

Time for Fabio to make a name for himself and send us through to the next round.
It’s the Cup and anything can happen so fingers crossed it happens in our favour. Should be a good game.

So we have a stream with no commentary so some details may be missed today!
Toti is looking comfortable and confident in his position now

Hanley barges into JR as he’s about to throw the ball out & gets a yellow card. Ball is put across our area but nobody there to connect. DP fouled by Arrons just outside their area but don’t know what happened!! Live now

Great tackle by Max on the edge of our box. I haven’t seen Fabio receive a pass yet

Good work by Nelson down the right but his cross goes out of play. Some poor passing from our side at the moment

Fabio up against 3 players loses the ball which ends up with Idah whose shot is easily collected by JR. DP goes down looking for a pen & lucky not to see yellow. Neves tries a distance shot but well wide. We now have English commentary!!

No shots on target for Wolves in this half. One added minute. Dubious free kick against Max is crossed and headed in by McLean almost predictably well wide of JR
Wolves 0 City 1

Half time and from what I’ve seen we have had a lot of possession but very little threat with no shots on target. Fabio has hardly been in the game, but City have looked more dangerous on the attack and had two shots on target. The free kick looked very soft but when taken McLean cons excited with his head and it lofted wide of JR and in.
Looks like Raul will be needed in second half
Wolves 0 Norwich 1

Stream has been awful for me. Saw the last 5 minutes consistently. Poor goal and poor half time score line.

Reading the stats suggests we’ve had the lion share of possession but very little in terms of shots etc.

Now what I usually say at this stage is ‘time for Traore’!!

I suspect we need a spark …. Someone needs to step up.

Here we go again with no changes. Fabio & Donk link up well but Donk’s cross eludes everyone. More good work by Fabio on the edge of the box but his cross is cut out before reaching Joao.

Rash attempt to dribble out by JR nearly costly. DP breaks and is brought down at the 2nd attempt by McLean who gets a yellow card. Free kick by Joao just eludes Fabio

Great save by JR down to his left for a corner. DP works really hard & gets a corner but we just can’t get a goal scoring chance.

4 added minutes to try and get into extra time as Chiq puts a ball on Fabio’s head but it flies over the bar.

All over and once again we exit the FA Cup. A poor first half for Wolves but they tried everything in the 2nd half with no luck at all. Bruno tried all sorts of changes but City defended very well and we just couldn’t find the scoring chances we needed.
Wolves 0 Norwich 1

Looked very dangerous for a 5-10 minute spell earlyish in the second half when Podence hit the post. A late chance to Raul, a couple of promising crosses from the new lad Chiq, again late on.

Lots of endeavour, can’t fault that but also not a great day up front for Wolves. Lacking a cutting edge and the required attacking quality to defeat (or even draw at FT) a very average opposition.

Oh well, we now look to the FA cup 2023 for our next silverware.

A terrible, lack-lustre first half in which Podence should be well and truly embarrassed with that dive. Should have been booked.
Second half was better but, apart from hitting the post, I don't think we tested their goalkeeper.
Didn't deserve to go through.
After two or three decent performances, I have to say that I am beginning to get very frustrated again with Fabio after these last two matches.

Poor stream meant that I missed large portions of the match but from what I did see we seemed very lacklustre and not aggressive enough in front of goal. Although Chiquinho was only on for a brief period he looked confident and assured so that, for me, was the only positive to come out of this match.

Easily one of the worst performances under bruno. Shocking first half and the 2nd half wasn't much better. No disrespect to Norwich but they are a poor side we should be beating them at home. Don't know if the wolves team just thought they had to turn up to win because for most of the game they didn't look interested. Very lacklustre performance was hoping we would have a cup run so gutting go out with a wimper.

Performance looked like a hangover from the winter break, losing Adama in the transfer window, and all the speculation about Neves being a transfer target for 'bigger' clubs than ours. These things must have an impact on the team in general.

On a related tangent, I do worry that Jimenez is still not back to being the player he was, and we will miss Adama's energy and impact upfront in the upcoming matches.

The common theme from the last few matches seems to be that Raul and Fabio are not up to speed and subsequently not getting the goals we all know we need. However, no striker is going to be prolific when the service is not there, trying to play your way through an organised defence rarely brings dividends so Bruno needs to work with DP , Trincao and Chiquinho to fashion a system that will give the strikers a chance to react to a decent supply of through balls or crosses.
