Match Thread: Wolves vs Leicester City

Wolves v Foxes
By Wolves
February 19 2022

Following Saturday's results some of which were very surprising, Wolves today have an excellent chance of firmly establishing themselves in the top seven of the Premier league with a home win against the Foxes

After the superb win at Spurs last weekend Wolves fans will be hoping the team can continue it's form against a team which has struggled to meet its pre-season expectations. Wolves players have had a full week to recover from their last game whereas Leicester were in action in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Leicester have been badly affected by injuries within their squad recently. Jamie Vardy notably has been out for some time, and Wesley Fofana has been missing for most of the season along with Jonny Evans whose appearances have been limited. However Bruno Lage has had the great fortune to announce this week that he has an almost complete squad to choose from for this game, with the great news that Joao Moutinho is once again fit, and the long awaited return of Pedro Neto has finally arrived with him returning to first team training this week. So with Neto and Jonny on the bench things are definitely looking up on the injuries front.

So for Wolves the question will undoubtedly be whether Bruno will continue with Luke Cundle in midfield following his impressive debut last week, and will last week's scorer Leander Dendoncker also retain his place or will Joao make an immediate return. Perhaps the fact that we have another difficult game at Arsenal on Thursday may also influence these decisions.

The match will kick off at 4:30pm and will be screened as part of Sky's Super Sunday programme on Sky Premier League and Sky Main Event. It will be refereed by Craig Pawson with Stuart Atwell oin VAR duty.

This board will provide regular updates on the action for those unable to otherwise follow the game, and board members are encouraged to post their observations and join in the conversation.

Hope I'm back in time for kick-off. Have a scan at QE Birmingham at 2.30. They had better be running on time.

For the first time this season it looks as though we will be able to field a full strength team and subs bench, yippee.
The Foxes have injuries and absences to contend with so it should be a good time to play them.
These matches are never easy so we will need to replicate the levels of last week and if we do another three points should go on the board in our push for a European campaign.
No doubt Bruno will ring the changes with young Luke Cundle making way for Moutinho.
Other tough game are ahead of us so let’s get an advantage today.

I’m sure that is the correct line up for today, hard lines on Cundle.

Decent looking bench too.

This will be tough, they all are. Of the three opening 1-0 defeats that we might easily have won, we have now dispatched Manchester United in the return and likewise Spurs, so this will be the third of the trilogy. Leicester are no mugs, even with their absentees, nevertheless it would be an excellent result to get the win today. Can we repeat away form at Molineux today? Everything crossed!!!

Up the Wolves!!

Afternoon All dreadful conditions to play in at Molineux as it’s absolutely lashing with rain. No Harvey Barnes or James Maddison starting for City, but the pundits see Paxon Daka as the man who poses their biggest threat.

Corner to City off Saiss is the final action of 1st half. Some good play by both teams with City looking dangerous whenever they attack. Wolves as always have made good breaks forward but lacked the final ball. Lookman has always looked a real threat and was in the right place to level the score after a super 9th minute strike by Ruben Neves.
Wolves 1 City 1

After a great and dominant start, Leicester come back into the match well and are full value for their equaliser.

Great Neves goal, though we have since rode our luck again and eventually something had to give. Agree about Lookman, he’s given us plenty of problems and I am not convinced Semedo has the making of him. Up front, Raul and Podence are too far apart for me.

Let’s see how it goes, if Neto is considered fit enough to be on the bench, then this is a match made for him. I’d give it time but taking Donk (or Moutinho) off and dropping Podence a little deeper with Neto and Raul up front, that sounds interesting to me!!

All to play for, as predicted, Leicester, despite form are no mugs, they’ve played some decent stuff

All square at the moment but we need to hold onto possession more than we have so far, it’s just inviting Leicester onto us and they have punished us once already. Not quite our fluent selves today but the weather doesn’t help. Hopefully Bruno sorts it out during the break.

Free kick to City on the wing well collected by Jose. City have started the half much better than Wolves and get the 1st corner. Taken by Jose.we are struggling to retain possession especially when attacking.

Into final minute & Jose has to save a 30 yard shot from Tielemans for a corner, Schmeichel up for it, Neto breaks and goes for goal but it’s wide as the final whistle is blown. Another 3 points after a really difficult game against a good team.

Missed both goals, although I have seen them since. Didn't get back until 30 mins had been played so missed the first, then had a power cut for 3 or 4 mins and by the time it came back on we had scored the second. Both good goals.
From what I saw inbetween, Leicester looked more dangerous than Wolves and we didn't seem to play as well as we have been of late. I suppose the weather played a part but both sides had the same conditions. Then again I thought we played better against Arsenal than we were given credit for and got nothing so it's swings and roundabouts and if you win these kind of matches it has to be a good thing.
We keep the momentum going and great to see Neto back.

We win but don’t play great …… that’s not a bad trait is it?

Impressed by Leicester overall, nevertheless two moments of shear finishing quality turned the match.

It was a very tough 90 minutes wasn’t it? Started so well, then pretty swiftly the Foxes came back strong and with the lion share of possession in the first half caused so many problems. Lookman seemed to have Semedo in his pocket and although Kilman was the closest, he actually left Semedo for dead for the goal!

Second half, Leicester were on top, we were giving it away for fun, Neves, Raul, Moutinho, so many - just couldn’t keep the ball for any appreciative period ! Then, against the run, Kilman glides out of defence with the ball, nice pass to AIt Nouri to Donk, Podence, back of the net. Terrific strike.

Wow. What a great 3 points. That was just the type of match that last season would have ended in a draw or defeat. Ground out, harsh on Leicester, wonderful for us. Neves scored an absolute pearler though he didn’t set the world alight in his bread and butter role.

Hwang created a bit of bite and enthusiasm when he came on and what a fantastic moment with Neto arriving on the pitch. I am sure he will make the difference in this run in.

So here we are, back in 7th place, 40 points from 24 matches and Arsenal and West Ham next up. What a week ahead of us which will go a long way to seeing how the remainder of the season evolves.

Superb win today, well done lads, bring on Thursday!!
