Match Thread: Wolves vs Crystal Palace

Wolves v Eagles
By Wolves
March 5 2022

After two disappointing, narrow defeats to London teams, Wolves have a chance to get back on track against another London team today when Crystal Palace come to Molineux.

Wolves fans will be hoping for a repeat of last season's home games against Palace, when they beat them in the League and the FA Cup. However their performance in the 2 - 0 defeat at Selhurst Park in November was probably one of the worst of the season.

Fans will also be keen to see coach Bruno Lage's team selection for this game after the five changes made for last week's defeat at West Ham. Will he revert to a three man midfield, or maintain a front three? Will Pedro Neto be fit enough to start his first game for over ten months? Will Raul Jimenez regain his starting position up front? Nelson Semedo is likely to be out for at least a month with his hamstring injury, so will Jonny make his first start of the season after his horrendous injury history, or will Ki-Jana Hoever retain his place after a poor display at West Ham?

Patrick Viera's Crystal Palace have had an up and down season but still posess a considerable threat with Wifred Zaha, and Michael Olise grabbing recent headlines in their wins over Watford and Stoke. Cheslea loanee Conor Gallagher and Eberechi Eze also pose a threat to Wolves having both scored against them in the past two seasons.

Today's game will kick off at 3pm and will be refereed by Andy Madley with Graham Scott on VAR duty. Subject to the availabilty of a decent stream this board will carry updates for the benefit of those unable to watch it. Board members are encouraged to contribute their own observatioins and join the conversation.

So... the good news is that Pedro Neto is fit to start upfront with Podence, but Jimenez starts on the bench again with Hwang in his place. Hoever and Marcal retain their places at wing back with Ait Nouri and Jonny on the bench. Chiquinho also returns to the bench. Line-up:

Rather strange selection in my opinion but I suppose I will have to wait until the full time whistle to see what it is that Bruno is trying to achieve. Nice to see Neto gets a start although I do wonder if he has the fitness to go the full ninety. Strong bench again which is heartening.

Watching Hwang, I think he is more of a centre forward than a wide attacking player, nevertheless another surprise team line up. Not least because of Marcal and Hoever getting the nod. Not convinced Hoever is as poor as the last outing suggests, I think there’s more to him, but this match will be another real test.
Great to see Neto from the off. I wish him all the best and keeping everything crossed he has the energy to last at least 75 minutes, give or take. Good to see Podence back, got to be right.
The whole experience of the last few matches gives a strong impression Bruno isn’t convinced of our strongest team. A decent win will start to settle things.

A real test for Hoever this afternoon up against Zaha who is strong as well as quick. Schlupp robs Pod and breaks forward through a couple of weak tackles but his shot is very wide.

It’s been all Palace up to now but some good attacking play gets us a throw high up in their half which inevitably goes backwards!
Good break by Palace and they score through Mateta after he beat Max open the byline

Corner to Wolves delayed as Hoever is down hurt and seems to be causing some concern re: his hamstring

Ruben tries a long distance shot but not enough power to beat Guita. Quite feisty game so far and the ref is letting a lot of tackles go.

Jose went the right way but Zaha put the ball over him. Zaha has been causing all sorts of chaos down our left side and we haven’t got an answer to it.

Our defending is abysmal this afternoon & Jose needs to be careful rushing out of his goal. Corner to Palace. Passing well at the front until Pod puts it way to far ahead of Marcel. This doesn’t look promising!

Great save by Jose to keep out a fine effort by Olise which was going into the corner. Four added minutes being played, & Pod gets a corner and another, comes to nothing Palace break but Zaha drifts offside.

Half time whistle goes NS a desperately disappointing half from Wolves who really haven’t threatened the Palace goal at all, whereas Palace have been threatening at all times, and way too quick for us to deal with. Zaha outpaced Saiss, rounded him and passed to Mateta, who managed to get a shot away despite the attention of Max, the shot beat Jose and Mateta was able to put it over the line. Straightforward poor challenge by Max on Schlupp for the penalty which Zaha put away confidently. Looks like we’re heading for our third consecutive defeat at this rate.

Good build up play, Pod leaves it for Ruben to have a shot but it’s wild. Worried then when Neto got a crack on the knee, but he’s up & OK. Free kick ten yds out reaches C but his header is kept out.

Neves brings a save out of Guita. All over and a poor performance to concede a third consecutive defeat and another team to have done the double over us this season. I’m afraid our dreams of Europe next season have become a nightmare and I really don’t know where our next points will come from, which coupled with the Hesgoal announcement makes it a bad day at the office!!

What a pile of total rubbish.

Missed a nailed on double because of jockey incompetence, Hesgoals is now a thing of the past, Wolves produce an awful home performance to complete a treble of London defeats.

Better in the second half but at home versus a team below us in the league and we huff and puff at best. Poor show.

Thanks for the link Chesh. Didn't see any of the first half ( thank God ) but got the second half a treat. Foreign commentary but I didn't need anyone to tell me how bad we were, I could see for myself. Whether I will be able to find a stream in future is debatable but this one worked well so many thanks.
First half sounded pretty horrendous. Of the three subs, I thought Jonny did fairly well, especially considering how long he has been out, Raul didn't play too bad and still looks our best bet at centre-forward and Chiquinho was quite lively, and boisterous. I would like to see more of him on that showing. Apart from that the other positives were, um, um, none.

One other thing. When I did eventually get a stream, the first thing I saw was the linesman messing about with his shoulder pack, if that's what it's called, for 5 minutes. That's the third time this season I've seen an official having trouble in Wolves matches alone. Anyone who thinks this technology is improving the sport is clearly deluded.

Fancy kickin a mon when he’s down!! 😂 I know what you mean though! The bloody jockey at Doncaster got boxed in 2 flights out when cruising and struggled to get out , poor tactics. Then when pushing the leader the horse faded badly to the left on the run in, losing and a length or two as it ran towards the rails AND, the jockey had the stick in wrong hand. Awful.

A dismal parallel of events on a football pitch 100 miles south.

Bruno has been quite critical of Hoever after todays match. If I knew how to put the link up I would but I'm a bit of a technophobe and don't. Basically saying his injury was his own fault as he hadn't prepared properly and seemed to me to be quite scathing on him.

Re: Match Thread: Wolves vs Crystal Palace
Posted by: Ivybridge Wolf (IP Logged)

There you go Andy, from the E&S - interesting Bruno picks out the ‘kids’ and that he ha too many, and they don’t perhaps work hard enough - thus lack of preparedness resulted in todays injury.

“Ki is a good example of a young kid who wants everything to happen (quickly),” Lage added.

“When you are out or your team-mate is playing, you are not training with intensity or preparing yourselves. Then, when you have the chance, these kind of things happen.

“I have too many kids in my team and sometimes they don’t work the way they should work. They are not prepared the way they should and after these kind of things happen.

“When they are in training they are thinking ‘I’m not playing, how am I not playing’. I said to them on the first day I started work with them, that they need to work. The first target is work and improve and after they have the chances.

“These things happen (the injury) because they go to the limit and are not prepared.

“Injuries can happen but this one happened because he is not prepared. Sometimes Ki doesn’t work with the same intensity.

“This warning is not just for Ki, but for the kids we have in our team. They need to understand that I don’t waste time with guys who don’t work hard every day to improve. We have players aged 35 who don’t play, like Joao, and in training they are trying to win every ball.

“I will not tolerate any more of the kids, or players, training and thinking too much about whether they are playing or not.”

Reflecting on the above quotes, it’s a bit troubling.

Firstly, Bruno is airing dirty washing in public and openly criticising a group of players (it’s appears not just Hoever). Surely never a great thing to do and eludes to a lack of unity in the camp and whilst it may be borne of frustration post match, it’s not great management IMO - I admit I’m surprised at Bruno.

Does a player ever not train to get an injury? I’ve never heard of that before. If so, why has Bruno selected Hoever and potentially other players who are not training as he deems fit? Is he sending a message to the board about lack of players and depth?

He says we have too many kids - I’m not sure many of us will disagree there, however it’s hardly a ringing endorsement of the group and he knew the set up before he arrived. He also will have seen how the transfer policy has developed over the past few seasons - did he expect something different? Was he told he would get something different?

As the saying goes, it’s looks a bit black over Bill’s mothers!! Hope not, hope it’s just a wild reaction to a really poor display but I think Bruno needs to reflect on his words, the players have not produced for sure, but there’s also the issue of team selection to be considered.

UTW!!

Agree with you Ivy, a bit out of kilter to his usual post match comments.
Perhaps it is just a headmasterly shot across the bows for the youngsters in the squad, of which we have many, that they have to step up and man up, be professional and do their job. With some notable exceptions I’m sure that some of the youngsters have let themselves down when they have been selected and that must surely be down to inadequate pre match preparation and lack of application. Given that a European place seems to be drifting away from us we have enough points for Bruno to experiment with formations and personnel in preparation for the next transfer window and those that don’t make the cut can be placed on the market whilst we negotiate replacements for them. I fully expect him to go with his favoured four at the back formation soon, the Nuno/Bruno hybrid is not working.
