Match Thread: Burnley vs Wolves

Here's Jonny
By Wolves
April 24 2022

Wolves will try to overturn the record books today by achieving their first win at Burnley's Turf Moor since 2010, and their first win over the Lancashire team since the win at Molineux on their return to the Premier League in 2018.

Perhaps to many fans surprise Burnley have done much better than expected since their astonishing decision to sack Sean Dyche so close to the end of the season. They have drawn at West Ham and then beaten Southampton in their two matches, so they will hoping for more points against Wolves today to help in their desperate fight to avoid relegation. On the other hand Wolves will be hoping for a much better performance and outcome after their woeful showing at Newcastle in their last match. Results for West Ham and in particular Manchester United have reignited the opportunity for Wolves to chase the European Qualifying places in the Premier League, being now six points behind United with two games in hand and having a better goal difference.

Turf Moor has seldom been a happy hunting ground for Wolves though, although Chris Wood - who seemed to have an entitlement to score against us - has now moved on, and their new strikers of Weghorst and Cornet seem to be struggling to get goals. The fact that Everton are only one place above them in the League and face an away derby at Liverpool this afternoon will surely motivate Burnley in their quest for three points which would take them above the Merseysiders.

Wolves have reported three absences due to injury for today's game. Midfielder Ruben Neves remains unfit due to his knee injury, whilst Daniel Podence's foot injury persists and Max Kilman has also suffered 'a knock' in training. It can be reasonably expected then that Willy Boly and Romain Saiss will feature in the back three, with Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho in midfield. Pedro Neto will hopefully be fit to join the attack with Raul Jimenez returning from suspension. The question then will be whether Fabio Silva will retain his place up front or Trincao will be brought in on the wing.

This game kicks off at 2pm and is not scheduled for TV coverage. Our referee will be the hugely experienced Anthony Taylor with Mike Dean on VAR duty

Subject to obtaining a decent stream this board will endeavour to post regular updates on the progress of the match, whilst members are also encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

So Jonny retgurns to the left side of defence with Nelson Semedo returning to the right side. For the life of me I don't see why Hwang starts ahead of Neto, but quite pleased to see Fabio retain his place alongside the returning Raul. Line-up:

bit of a bogey team for us of late, we used to beat the, for fun …. Fingers crossed we’ll find a bit of positive form today and expunge the memories of the Newcastle performance.

Bright start from both sides, Jimenez just put a fabulous cross in for Fabio but excellent defending cut it out.

Only 7 minutes gone but a decent beginning

Bad error from Burnley defence and it fell just behind Jimenez who manages to get a shot in bit straight at the keeper

Some lovely play from Wolves, Semedo and Fabio involved, good pass to Jonny who cuts inside and Pope makes a good save from the shot.

Then there’s bloody short corner which come to absolutely nothing!!!

Longer distance Moutinho shot, bounces wide.

We are the better side, no question, applying plenty of pressure. Jimenez and Fabio are showing some positive signs of linking

It’s that final pass etc that’s need.

Good cross from Burnley, Sa claims extremely well and snuffs the danger.

Break to us there, Fabio on the left turns into traffic in a very good position inside the bios and a poor shot in the end that’s blocked easily

Good move by Burnley, McNeil again gets into the box, left footed strike from 17 yards, Sa tips over comfortably

Corner cleared and that’s the end of that Burnley attack

Half time 0-0.

We’re the better side but … dare I say it ….. a lack of cutting edge up front. We’ve created some good opportunities and played very nicely, evidence of Fabio linking well with Jimenez earlier in the half but that faded a little.

Jonny is playing well, so is Semedo, the back 3 are fairly comfortable, the main problems presented by McNeil on the right. Sa is doing a great job, mopping up stuff and dominating the box.

Personally I’d like to see Raul playing as central striker rather than Fabio.

Overall, not bad at a sunny Turf Moor.

UTW!!

Frustrating first half for me as I’ve been unable to maintain a decent stream, however it has seemed to be pretty even on balance with both sides getting some shots away. Fabio & Raul seem to be linking up quite well up front, Semedo has made some good runs up the right side, and Willy Boly has made some mighty impressive tackles.
Burnley 0 Wolves 0

The better side overall but Burnley have not capitulated and present an occasional threat which we will regret if we don't start to take our chances. Fabio linking play very well but Neto may be a more direct threat at some point in the second half. No poor performances just need that cutting edge in the second half.

Brilliant save from Pope. Brilliant run with the ball from Hwang, perfect pass to Semedo, shoots towards the top right and Pope does so well. Unfortunately.

Corner comes to nothing though Hwang is lucky to escape a yellow card as his trusty leg prevents a Burnley breakaway

Cleared well, Burnley break Vidra 1 on 1 with Jonny but Jonny wins brilliantly and well

I’m listening to the commentary and Mikey Burrows and Thommo are pretty downbeat about us since the Burnley goal. Trincao come on for Saiss.

Burnley just had the ball in the net but Sa was adjudged to have control of the ball with both hands.

C’mon Wolves!!!

Burnley will leap over Everton as things stand.

Boly has had a great match for us. That’s a real positive.

Can we score

Re: Match Thread: Burnley vs Wolves

Thommo sums it up …… with all the possession we over play, trying to score the perfect goal, extra touches where something more direct is required.

No doubt in my mind with that first half performance should have resulted in a goal or two. Lots of plaudits for some nice stuff to watch but no cutting edge and Burnley show us the way into the back of the net.

Final whistle as Burnley have a massive lifeline. As I’ve said elsewhere if we get the results, we’ll make Europe but I’m afraid far too many lacklustre performances and yet another one after we have been handed another chance for the top 7 given other results. So frustrating.

Today was an odd one, we didn’t play too badly, played decent in the first half but nowhere near enough quality up front and over thinking it far too much.

GET IT IN THE BOX WOLVES!!!

Oh well. Brighton next week.

Burnley looked like they wanted it more than us and that's the disappointing thing for me they out fought us 2nd half and some of our lot didn't look interested. We have had lots of opportunities to crack the top 6 and we have thrown them all away. Ill say it again chan doesnt convince me one bit he will be a waste of money. Like ivy said we look like we are trying to score the perfect goal all the time we need to be a little more direct sometimes. Trust wolves to make a poor burnley side look half decent. We have gifted them the points today like we did at west ham and Newcastle. Such a let down.

Didn't play too badly for the first hour or so but once Burnley had scored we never looked like equalizing. They won the tackles and picked up the loose balls.
Sa played well and Jonny, Semedo and Fabio were decent enough. Understandable as it is, sadly Raul looks a shadow of the player he was. The lack of scoring isn't just down to him of course and hopefully he comes back to something like his best but, stating the obvious, something has to be done in the summer to address the absence of goalscoring. We're free from ffp now so fingers crossed.
Never mind, Brighton our bogey team next.

Perhaps wishing for a European adventure was a step too far for Bruno first season. A lot of pretty play and interplay but no goals as a result does make me wonder if sometimes we should be a little more direct. No doubt the squad will see some changes during the summer and they will be necessary because on current showing we couldn't really compete in a European competition and maintain a good league position.
Well done Burnley, hope you make it.
