The Molineux Way Prediction League 2022-23
Here We Go Again!
By Cheshire Wolf
July 24 2022
The new Wolves Premier League Season kicks off in two weeks time, so it's time to introduce this year's Prediction League Competition which all board members are encouraged to join in once again.
Essington Wolf was the victor in last season's competition and is clearly hoping to continue his good form this season. So we hope you will all take part again and provide the challenge needed to stop him 'doing a City'!!
The competition is totally free to take part in, and is for fun rather than a prize, All that is required is that a forecast of the likely result is made before kick-off. The results will usually be updated the day after the game.

I’m up here, in the West Park, in preparation for Fulham tomorrow and it’s bloody sweltering.
Anyway, a reminder to as many as possible …… get your predictions in asap, on the assumption you haven’t already . And if you weren’t able to get a prediction in last week, do not worry, everybody bar one predictor (i.e. me) was tosh, so there is no disadvantage starting a bit late!!
UTW!!!

Please note: If anyone had already made a prediction for Tuesday’s game against Liverpool you will probably need to redo it. In trying to put the result from yesterday’s game in I inadvertently put it in as the result for Tuesday’s game, and the only way to rectify it was to relist the game.

Many congratulations to Ivybridge Wolf who - much like Manchester City - has achieved Champion status in our Prediction League 2022-23 with a game in hand. I also might add that he has actually played two games less than his closest contenders, so a mighty victory from all perspectives.
Congratulations on making it back to the top Ivy!!

Evening All
As kick off time rapidly approaches I would just like to check what the appetite is for another Prediction League for the 2023-24 season, and for the opportunity for someone to wrestle the title back from Ivybridge Wolf. We only had about seven of us last season and I would hope that a few more would join in as there is quite a bit of work to set it up and then update it each week, which I am quite happy to do as long as there is sufficient enthusiasm for it.
Many thanks

Can someone explain how the goal difference is worked out in the league?

Starting with goals for using man u v wolves as an example.
The score was man u 1 wolves 0. correctly predicting man u to score 1 gives 1 goal for. Correctly predicting wolves to score 0 gives 0 goals for. So for this fixture it is possible to get either 1 or 0 goals for.
Applying this to the wolves 1 Brighton 4 fixture. Predicting wolves to score 1 gets 1 goal for. Predicting Brighton to score 4 gets 4 goals for. Predicting both is 5 goals for. So for this fixture it is possible to score 0 1 or 5 goals for.
I think that's how the algorithm works for goals for but test it against your own predictions.

Now to goals against, again using man u 1 wolves 0 as an example. I predicted 2-0 to man u. I was 1 out on man u which is 1 goal against. I was correct for wolves so no goals against. Total 1 goal against for me on this fixture.
Applying this to wolves 1 Brighton 4. I predicted wolves to score 1 so no goals against for me. I also predicted Brighton to score 1 which was 3 under. So in total I am 3 goals against on this fixture.

It is much more likely to get guess the number of goals a team will wrongly than to guess right. This is why we all have negative scores when subtracting goals against from goals for.

Cheers for the reply Sheffield. I think the main issue with the league is too much emphasis is put on the correct score than the correct result so it would be possible for someone to get numerous home win/away win/draw permutations wrong yet fluke a few correct scores and win the league. Predicting home/way wins or draws is hard enough in football and should be worthy of 3 points, with the correct score an added bonus point. It'd separate the useless predictions from the good ones instead of just 1 point difference with people shooting up the league fluking correct scores which is purely luck based.
A poster could predict 29 out of 38 premier league results correctly yet finish below someone predicting 10 out of 38 premier league results correctly if they fluke the correct score which is a bit daft and why I left the league years ago, but it is what it is and will complete the season

Yes I agree completely. If Man u had scored that penalty I would be top of the league now.

Hmm, last season I think about 33-35 points claimed my top spot. I can’t remember the total for my previous two victories 😎

I don't think the mickey mouse cup should feature in the prediction league, 11 changes for both teams pretty much..time it was scrapped as an utter waste of time

The members taking part during the past two seasons wanted it to be included Angry, so it was logical to do so again this season. The FA Cup will also be included

I can only apologise for that as it has completely escaped my attention EW. I always try to change to dates of matches when the changes are announced but this one must have eluded me.
Strangely I usually leave my prediction to the last minute but did it a couple of days ago for some reason!!

I do think the award of 3 points for a correct score makes it more of a guessing competition than skill. The idea that someone predicting a wolves win should only get 1 point whilst a fluke correct score is 3 points is daft. You could literally have 10 correct scores which is luck based and 28 wrongly predicted match outcomes beating someone with 29 correct match outcomes and 9 incorrect in a season.
