Match Thread: Leeds United vs Wolves

Season's Opener
By Wolves
August 6 2022

Well.... here we are at the beginning of another Premier League Football season, and once again Wolves play away from home for their opener, this time at Elland Road facing Leeds United and looking for a positive start.

It's probably fair to say that the close season has been less than exciting for most Wolves fans! Three departures from the squad, and only one new recruit, followed by the desperately disappointing serious injury to Chiquinho ruling him out for the season, and the equally frustrating injury to Raul Jimenez which is likely to sideline him for several weeks. Plenty of talk in the press about potential incoming players but nothing concrete yet. Similarly lots of talk about Ruben Neves leaving which seems to have settled down, but now the constant talk is about Morgan Gibbs-White being wanted by Notts Forest, and Connor Coady being wanted by Everton.

As for today's game, the main focus is likely to be on whether Bruno Lage will start with a four man defence - which seems to have been the main focus of the recent training camp - which may mean no starting place for Coady, and who will form the strike force in the absence of both Jimenez and Silva. New defensive signing Nathan Collins seems pretty likely to start, as does Max Kilman.

The performance of the team in their 'friendly' games could indicate potential for picking up three points today, particularly as United are claiming to have up to 8 players unavailable for their starting eleven. Wolves also have a good record of playing at Elland Road having managed to leave with at least a point the last four times they have played there. Leeds had a very poor finish to the last campaign under Jesse Marsch, and it will be interesting to see how they start this season.

Today's game will kick off at 3pm and is not due to be screened on TV. Our referee will be Robert Jones with support from Jarred Gillet on VAR duty

Finding a decent stream to be able to follow the game isn't easy these days, so this board will endeavour to offer regular updates on the progress of the match. Board members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the discussion.

Let the new order get underway, just hope it's well practiced and robust enough to deliver a better season than the last.
Fingers crossed and cmon lads.

So Hee Chan Hwang leads the line, with a three man attack behind him. Ruben is our captain with Coady on the bench. A minutes applause for those fans lost over summer. Both sides take the knee & off we go

Really poor defending in our box failing to clear the box and Rodrigo puts it away between Sa and his near post

HCH is down and needing treatment after a rapid sprint down the right wing and a left footed cross which Meslier cut out. Looks like he’ll be OK

Good attacking play by Jonny & unfortunate not to get a good cross in but gets a corner which comes to nothing

Donk fails to convert a golden chance then half time whistle goes
Difficult to summarise due to the stop start nature of the stream but generally it seems pretty even.

Very fortuitous first goal for us because we have been second best for the majority of the match with Leeds causing us lots of problems almost at will.
Shades of the latter part of last season, inconsistent passing poor choices and a defence that is looking shake.
Ait Nouri really needs to up his game, causing us as many problems as the Leeds strikers. Neto looking good and the one who is causing the most problems for Leeds, Gibbs White has been ineffective so far so it would be nice if he likes up to his apparent valuation in the second half. Need Podence on the ball more than we have seen so far. Jose Sar,___________?
A much better second half required if we are to get something out of this.

I dont understand why people on the mix and elsewhere rate mgw so highly. He was poor for us, had 1 season in the second tier and now he is the second coming. It's a case of the emperors new clothes and pretending he is anything close to a top player is clutching at more straws than a horny scarecrow.

Coady biting his nails on the bench. Good break by Neto but overhit his pass to RAN, then HCH can’t keep it from going over the byline as he breaks.

Great save by Meslier to deny Donk from a corner. MGW gets a shot away & brings out another save. Bamford clatters Pod in the chops so he is down hurt now but is OK

Fortuitous corner to Utd wasted. Wolves still putting some good attacking moves together but not testing Meslier enough. Corner to Leeds cleared & Neto nearly has his shirt torn off but no yellow card!!

The bench looks like a league 2 side or a premiership team in administration quality wise. Imagine a few injuries as the season progresses and these lads taking to the pitch to battle relegation.

All over and I lost my stream.not a good start to the season again a very average team. Jose Sa will be disappointed to have conceded the first goal, and I thought the defence could have cut out Bamford’s cross into the box. Not sure whether the 4 at the back contributed to the outcome but no doubt Bruno will stick with it. Some improvement in the 2nd half with some good attacking play but lacking the final shots. Not sure it’s the right thing to do to turn down a £35m offer for MGW!

Really not good enough and although it was the first match of the season we really didn't look much different to the way we finished last season with the exception of Neto bringing some added threat to our attack. Pretty interplay and some nice movement at times which looks nice on the eye but as so often was the case last season, no end result. When you consider that Leeds have a high number of injuries and new personnel we needed to take advantage and we were unable to which doesn't auger well for us in the future when we will have to confront much stronger teams.
Oh well, onwards and upwards.

Could see it coming second half, we were on top for the first 20 minutes but we looked like we were trying to score the perfect goal. Just knew leeds would get one chance and score. Same old story though we just can't score enough goals. Nice to see Neto back and looking fit. For the love of god fosun go out and find a striker who can find the back of the net! If we don't it's going to be a long season. I'm afraid we have wasted our money on chan, he ain't no premier league player.

Have to say that Sa didn't cover himself in glory in the first half and Ait -Nouri also made a dog's dinner of the first goal. Lost my stream just before their second and haven't seen it.
As Lupy says, we played some quite pretty stuff in the second half and up to losing my stream, we looked the better side but led to nothing so that's not much use.
Against a below average side with a lot of injuries, disappointing.

First game, but could be a long season. Skating on thin ice if we get some injuries to crucial
players.

Am awaiting MOTD so could be up for a while just yet, assuming we’me on last or near to.

Great early goal and i thought, here we go …… but the reality, according to all I've read is that we were short up front …… what a surprise …. What a change.

MOTD has just started ….. we're not last! Fulham v Liverpool are first, Mitrovic is the very man we need to keep out this time next Saturday. I will be there.

Will do Risca, though I see myself as backup for Jose Sa, rather than anything more useful up the other end. Still even if I got on the bench, all signs is that I would be overlooked by Bruno …. Just like the rest of the bench fillers.
