Nuno had a dream, to build a football team. And as the speculation continues as to who will be the new Manager at Wolves, the team prepare for a hugely important game at Molineux this afternoon, against Nottingham Forest, who sit one place below them at the base of the Premier League. Wolves can perhaps hope for a repeat of the 1980 League Cup Final when Andy Gray scored the winner against favourites Notts Forest

Nuno Espirito Santo is now being quoted as favourite to leave his job in Saudi Arabia and return to the Molineux hotseat, which - if it happens - would no doubt sponsor a mixed response from the Wolves faithful. However the sooner the uncertainty following the dismissal of Bruno Lage is brought to an end surely the better.

 

In the meantime Steve Davis and James Collins continue in their caretaker role, and will be in charge for today's game, keenly searching for the answer to the team being the lowest scorers in the Footbal League this season, and for three points to lift them up the League. They face a team with their own struggles following their own highly publicised close season in which they signed 23 new players including former Wolves players Morgan Gibbs-White and Willy Boly. MGW is likely to start today's game whilst Big Willy is still tending to occupy the bench (which does call into question his urgent desire to leave Molineux!!)

 

After his first start at Chelsea last week striker Diego Costa can be expected to make his Molineux debut today whilst Raul Jimenez continues his rehabilitation. Goncalo Guedes was withdrawn at half time last week after a poor first half, and was apparently physically under the weather but has recovered now, as has midfielder Boubacar Traore who may make his first start today. It has also been declared that keeper José Sa has been playing with a broken bone in his wrist since the Fulham game, but is likely to retain his place. Adama Traore also made his first start at Chelsea and can reasonably be expected to start again in the absence of the injured Pedro Neto. Nathan Collins serves his final suspension match, but Captain Ruben Neves is available to start after being suspended last week.

 

There is little doubt that this is a must win game for Wolves, but is also a must win for Notts Forest so it should make for an interesting and hopefully exciting game. Our referee will be newly appointed Thomas Bramall, with the very experienced Anthoiny Taylor as 4th Official and Lee Mason on VAR Duty.

 

The match is due to kick off at 3pm and will not be screened on any of the major TV stations.

Lovely nostalgic photo of Andy Gray scoring the only goal in the League Cup final 1980. I was behind the goal at Wembley on that day aged 16. The last time we won a trophy (not including Sherpa Van). The days of John Barnwell and Richie Barker. Happy days.

I was there too Sheffield. Terrible viewpoint low down and just to the right of half way on the side Gray scored. Great days.

Got a terrible feeling about today, but I hope my guts are just feeling nervous! UTW!

Nearly all Wolves so far with some promising attacking play. Rain is pouring down, and Ivybridge Wolf is sitting in the uncovered Graham Hughes stand!!

Good break by Wolves but Adama smashes it high and very wide instead of crossing for Costa. 63% possession for Wolves so far.

Adama is getting plenty of space on the right but unable to make it pay & so far Costa is getting no service. Williams gets a shot away & they claim a hand ball - checked and denied. MGW lucky not to get a yellow for stopping Adama

Another fluid attack by Wolves but RAN’s shot is well wide. He then puts a cross over for Costa who puts it wide, but he’s offside anyway! Adama is brought down for a free kick. Kilman heads Adama’s cross against the post!

Another corner for Wolves which Joao takes, Adama gets a couple of shots away but Henderson saves. Some poor decision making in final ball delivery is costing us goals

Half time and no score. Wolves have dominated since kick off and had some good attacks but few shots on target and haven’t forced Henderson into any saves. Max was unlucky to hit the post when it looked like a goal. Adama has had the freedom of the right wing but still can’t get the ball to Costa, and has made some poor decisions. RAN has been a danger up the left side. If we keep this up we may get a 0-0 draw!!

Free kick in a decent area after a foul on Jonny for Joao to take but Pod can’t control the pass. Adama gets to byline but no cross. MGW gets a shot off but wide & high

Adam’s shot deflected for a corner. Possible handball against Toffolo being looked at VAR and given after review by referee. Our first pen of the season. Neves to take it and slams it into the corner

Lingard on for Dennis & Mangala on for Kouyate. Long shot by Neves taken by Henderson. Costa starting to see the ball more now. Great pass by Pod for RAN to break up the wing but his cross is awful

Some poor passing by Wolves causing problems then a wild attempted clearance by Toti yields a corner. VAR looking at a possible foul on Yates in the box. Forest fan Gary Bartlesville thinks it is a penalty. Ref going to have a look. Penalty given against Nunes

Poor free kick by Ruben and Johnson breaks but overruns the ball in to touch. Ten added minutes played and he finally blows the whistle.
A well deserved win for Wolves as they by far the better team. A superbly taken penalty over a well saved penalty sealed it, and it takes us out of the bottom three for now. Just a pity we couldn’t score in open play but hopefully that will come.

A deserved win but not really convincing, but I suppose it was all about the points when your in the relegation zone. To be honest I don't think we really looked like scoring again in open play and that's a big worry going forward. Great penalty save by sa, especially if he has a broken wrist. Confidence still looks low but at least they showed a bit more fight today. Some players still performing well below par, we need the new manager in soon to give everyone a lift hopefully whoever it is. Ain't got a clue who it will be we hear different stories day by day. Word of the day.....relieved.

Good result and for the first time for a long time the players seemed up for the challenge, playing with some determination and commitment. Good performances all over the pitch and Adama seems to have been reborn, whatever has revitalised this squad let's have more of it please.
Only downside was the way we took our foot off the pedal and invited Forest to gain some initiative, but three points in the bag, well done lads.

I dont know what game some of you were watching... good performances all over the pitch? I can barely remember the forest keeper touching the ball.. woeful passing, no incisive play upfront and won due to a dubious penalty given after the ball was blasted at a forest players arm from a couple.of yards and our keeper with a broken hand saving 1. We dominated possession against the worst team in the league at home ...so what? We created hardly anything. A trip to specsavers required for a couple I'm afraid next week 🤓

Infact I'd go so far as to say, if we play like that for the rest of the season we will be joining forest in the championship. If we hadn't got the penalty we could still be playing now with the forest goal seeing less life than a cemetery

Dull stuff but you could see that we lack confidence. Lovely to see Forest in pain; still have memories of the swaggering arrogance they had when we both got promoted about a million years ago.
Ecstatic that we got a result, but I doubt that it will fill the team with the smooth confidence winners display.
Unlike some on here, I welcome back Collins for the next two, winnable, games.

I'd play traore upfront and in a central role with costa..calamity collins isnt the main issue, lack of goals are. I'm a big fan of Adama for his physical attributes as a player.. pace and strength but he has the brain of a processed pea meaning decision making out wide leads to so many poor balls such as high crosses for 4 ft 2 podence. In the middle he can just run at defenders as a deep lying striker without needing to engage his tiny brain too much and would be much more effective.

We are all entitled to our opinions and I respect yours Angry, perhaps I was just a little too exuberant but nonetheless my view remains that the team seemed far more motivated today, looked like they were playing for/with each other rather than the heads down disjointed performances they have presented so far this season. Rome wasn't built in a day. I will take any positives after our dire start to this season.

As Chesh eluded, I was there in the Graham Hughes / SW corner stand ….. not a bad view, better than the last time I had a ticket in there at least. The heavens opened at about 3.05pm, though luckily only for 5 minutes and then a less vociferous shower late on in the match!!

I’d summarise that the match was average to poor fare unfortunately.

I felt we played better, overall, than lately and pretty much throughout were the better side. First half we dominated in terms of possession and we created some great opportunities and got into very good positions but our old, persistent and continuing enemy - poor delivery and finishing - remains firmly in tact. Adama was somewhat hit and miss in crossing but at least he had a go and his blast led to the penalty. There were some better performances, though have to say it was Neves again who led our drive. Nunes was decent in the first half too. A real shame Kilman hit the post, however in reality we should have been at least 1 up at half time.

Second half started much the same and bar the last 15 minutes when we completely lost shape and good evidence of panic, we deserved the 3 points. Make no mistake however, even when pressing in that final period, Forest were incredibly poor and if they avoid relegation it’ll be some kind of miracle of a turnaround.

What to say about VAR? As a paying spectator it is utterly bollox. Both penalty decisions, to the naked eye, were mystifying (yes I have since watched MOTD), in fact for our penalty I did not see one player nor hear any fans appeal for the penalty. We were all waiting for the corner. Then the pain started. Somebody must have timed it, but it felt like an absolute age to make a decision, just dreadful. Okay, we celebrated the penalty award, though I felt completely removed from proceedings and passive as we waited to hear form the Stockley park stooge's. Great finish from Neves.

Similarly the Forest penalty award took nearly as long, though the hand of Sa was worth waiting for. Great chant afterwards ….. “one hand, he’s only got one hand, he’s only got one hand, he’s only got one hand”.

Final whistle and relief . 3 points, out of the bottom three (for now at least) but on that showing plenty still to do and be concerned about. Better however, and that is something positive. Congratulations to Steve Davis and his team - proper Wolves!
