Match Thread: Wolves vs Leicester City

Wolves v Foxes
By Wolves
October 23 2022

So today we have another bottom three contest for Wolves to take part in, as we welcome current bottom team Leicester City to Molineux. Strange to think that only five years ago City were Premiership Champions and are now struggling at the bottom of the League, and perhaps some will surely think this is position they can extricate themselves from over the season.

More importantly to Wolves fans this is a game which needs to be won by us, especially after Nottingham Forest yesterday managed to turn Liverpool over for three points.

Following the unexpected decision to appoint Steve Davis and James Collins as temporary Team Managers - or presumably Head Coaches - following the lack of interest from any other credible candidates, we wait to see what impact can be had on the performances of our small squad. We will look to see whether they can actually bring the best out of Matheus Nunes and Goncalo Guedes as well as Adama Traore to finally get some goals scored, and whether they will continue to bring on the new young talent that appears to be available in the form of Hugo Bueno and Joe Hodge. Fans will also be keen to see whether the starting time Diego Costa is getting will eventually lead to the level of danger in the box and ultimately goals we need from him.

Leicester will undoubtedly pose a serious threat to our defence despite the position they currently occupy in the League, as Harvey Barnes and James Maddison have proved dangerous strikers already this season. If he gets a game Nelson Semedo will certainly need to be more focussed on the game than he was in the very disappointing second half at Palace on Tuesday.

The match is due to kick off at 2pm but is not due to be shown on any regular channels. Our referee will be the very experienced Michael Oliver with Chris Kavanagah on VAR Duty.

This board will hope to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

If there was a match that was going to define our season this is probably it. Meeting Leicester when they seem to be on a bit of a high and with injured players returning isn't going to make things easier. An absolutely must win match or I fear all the wind will be knocked out of this squad and they will struggle to recover at any time soon. With some players still settling in and our continued difficulties in front of goal it is going to be a tough afternoon. No less than 100% effort will be expected from the fans who I hope can really get behind the team and give them that invaluable encouragement. Hoping for the best but worried it may be the worst.

Two changes for this afternoon's game with Jonny replacing Semedo and Joao back in for B Traore. Interestingly Bueno retains his place with Ait-Nouri on the bench. Starting Line-up:

Here we go. Adama taken out with a nasty challenge by Faes on the byline. Free kick comes to nothing, then Bueno fouled on other side. Some poor passing in evidence already

Poor play by Jonny gets him an early yellow card. Dangerous free kick converted by Thielemans from distance right into top corner. No chance for Sa.

Far far too easy for City. A typical Harvey Barnes goal after linking up with Dewsbury Hall. We are not looking at the races today.

Bueno gets a cross over which Costa can only head wide for a corner. Free kick outside their area gets to Costa but blocked by Justin. Junes beaten to it by keeper award. The ball is played into Nunes in the area but he’s surrounded by 3 players!

Good break by Wolves but Adama’s cross is cleared. Pod in the clear can’t beat Ward, rebound headed by Costa but easily collected..
Half time whistle met with boos from Molineux crowd. A superb strike and a well created goal are the difference between us. Wolves once again look promising at times but no final ball. City defending en-masse and relying on counter striking which they do well.wolves look like strangers in defence at times, which possibly they are!!

Despite a greater number of chances being created we still fail to put the ball in the net. Better going forward but defence is looking very suspect. Crowd starting to show some frustration which doesn't help. Need an early goal to get back into this or Leicester will just see the game out. Calm heads required.
Dire straits.

Better pressure in these opening minutes, great Adama cross results in a corner which when delivered results in a free kick on the due of the area.

Neves on it.

It’s been all Wolves. A couple of great Bueno crosses, including a shout for a hand ball penalty (come to nothing). Credit to the team in the way they have started this half. No complaints with this effort.

Another corner to Wolves, Costa delivers a weak header into the arms of Ward. You get the feeling we needed to score during this opening period

All over and loud boos ring out after a very very poor afternoon at Molineux. Perhaps not a totally unexpected result but the scoreline certainly is. City anticipated everything we did and defended well before breaking on the counter attack. Manu of our players failed to turn up today, Max, Nunes, Jonny all had poor games. Neves must be hoping amended can get him to Barcelona soon as he can!!

Some boo’s but not a cauldron, even from those remaining. You almost think what’s the point in booing, it won’t change anything.

A totally disastrous result. The fact we had the lion share of chances merely demonstrating how tepid we are as an attacking force.

There is no doubt we are relegation material, surely anybody who felt we might be too good to go down with these players will be reassessing after this capitulation

After a bright start giving us some hope it plummeted into a shambolic performance which gives me little hope that much can be salvaged unless our new manager has the skills of Houdini.
It's going to be a long season.

Club is really stuck in the doldrums now, and the inept handling of finding a new manager ensures the situation will stagnate and rot even further, especially after the moronic announcement that there will be no change until the new year.

I can't see where any fresh energy or motivation is going to come from, unless Shi admits his error and pulls out all the stops to get a new manager into the club to start work prior to and during the World Cup break. Only a fresh start with someone new to the club is likely to get us out of this mess.

Freak game? Dunno. We seem to have completely lost the plot. Quite recently we had a never-quit attitude that made you feel we had a chance even when we were down. Not now. Nuno was criticised for being too negative!!!
Steve Davis already won one more game than Terry Connor but we lost two six pointers and it is tough to see where the spark is coming from.
Typically teams that get thrashed show a reaction next time out. What happens when both of them lose four nil?

Re: Match Thread: Wolves vs Leicester City

Well according to fosun and a few experts on the mix etc the following points were true:
1) We will score more goals with more defenders
2) We have improved under Steve Davis
3) Our players are top 6 quality
4) Collins is an upgrade on Coady..

Anyway in the real world ... if Steve Davis was a dog from a mangerial perspective he would be put down. Imagine thinking established internationals are going to play for and respect a guy that has a relegation from Crewe and Northwich on his cv - it's utterly ridiculous and quite frankly laughable.

That all said, the "manager" isn't the main issue, I said repeatedly going into the new season with no fit strikers was a disaster but apparently more defenders solved that.. The club is run like a mad hatters teaparty and we could still be playing next week with no goal to show. We're going down faster than a cheap dirty wh*re in bangkok gentleman

I agree Risca. To me, rather than waiting until the new year, finding a new manager now would give the manager and board a chance to assess new players in time for January rather than spend daft money toward the end of the window.

Alas, Shi’s statement that there were no outstanding candidates is somewhat depressing and leads to a number of sad possibilities, that is to say that nobody he spoke to was interested in Wolves, that he isn’t interested in spending on the decent managers who are available , that Shi can’t assess who a decent manager is (or not) or a combination of all.

In a state of shock after watching that.
Prepare for championship football next season I can't see this team showing any fight or passion to stay in the premier league.
Only hope they have Shi needs to admit he's got it wrong and bring a manager in now not the New year because it will be to late and we will be cut adrift.
Dare I say it they could do a lot worse than dyche.
I'm sure he would come in and give some of these a kick up the backside because they need it.
And to think we let a leader like coady leave on loan and spend £20 million on a replacement in collins, what the hell were they thinking?
Say what you want about nuno but we wouldn't be in this mess if he was still here.

It must be down to Bruno Lage surely his desire to sign Collins, Guedes and Nunes none of whom have led to any improvement whatsoever in our performances and our defence has gone to rat$hit since Coady left.
I agree with Essington it’s worth considering Dyche, who would at least try and sort things out during the World Cup and know some scrappers worth bringing in in January to fight for our future survival!
