Match Thread: Wolves v Brighton and Hove Albion 5.11.22

A win: Heaven In My Hands
By Ivybridge Wolf
November 5 2022

Another Saturday afternoon 3pm fixture today, this time at Molineux and versus Brighton and Hove Albion – the other Albion. Yet again, keep saying it, tough opposition and difficult to assess how both we and they’ll perform. Whilst we know how capable we are of late, ranging from the satisfactory, the below par and the downright the poor, seemingly In Pursuit Of Accidents, Brighton themselves turn up in Wolverhampton with a record of W1 D1 L3 in their last 5. Not great either. The danger signs are there though, they demolished Chelsea 4-1 last week. And Brighton are our bogey side … or are they? In our 8 premier league matches the overall statistics show W2 D4 L2, but even those with short memories will remember the last match against them, the home 0-3 surrender in April this year. Hopefully when The Sun Goes Down on this November afternoon, and for a change, we’ll be the ones Living It Up.

Unfortunately, I can’t get to this match which is Leaving Me Now with a bit of a dilemma as I normally go home and away with a Seagulls mate of mine, but it clashes this year, and instead I’m going to a gig in Torquay to see a band of significant 1980s fame.

Once again, Steve Davis is in charge for this match with confirmation this morning that he will be at the helm too versus Leeds and Arsenal prior to the World Cup. The validity of reports that Jeff Shi and Fosun had renewed their interest in Julen Lopetegui are true, the announcement of the appointment made this morning, the dawn of another new era beckons. It seems The Chinese Way to keep hunting their man has paid off, Fosun have got their target, though Julen Lopetegui will still be Staring At The Sun in Spain for a little while longer. He takes over on Monday 14th November with his first match in charge versus Everton on boxing day. Lopetegui must hit the ground running and make an instant impact. The very best of luck to him, however I really do wonder what has changed since he last turned Wolves down a few weeks ago? Have personal circumstances Running In The Family settled down for him? Has he demanded a January ‘war chest’ with key signings ear marked? Has he negotiated control over recruitment to side line Sellers and Shi? Has Julen renewed vigour and vitality after being sacked by Seville? Can our players be sufficiently motivated or are some already plotting their exit? In essence, is Lopetegui a Good Man In A Storm?

Who gets picked this week? The key position to settle is that of centre forward! Good grief, could it be Hwang gets a run out? Whoever is selected we have to have the Physical Prescence to get stuck into a dogged Brighton defensive set up. The other potential positional issue is that of Nunes, especially if his injury isn’t yet resolved and I would expect to see Moutinho to fill the gap. Other than that, can’t see much change today.

What about the fans? Are they sticking with the team? Worrying scenes at Molineux last time out with plenty leaving by the end – the team stretching and providing testing Lessons In Love for all Wolves supporters. I just hope that by the time the terrace Chant Has Begun, the lads show a bit of pride and get stuck into the opposition. This is a home match, we must Turn It On and push Brighton in every possible way.

Come on Wolves, it’s Something About You that keeps us going, blind faith for some in these uncertain times, exasperation, Love Games, hate games, deep troughs and despair. Been said before but we simply must start amassing points as soon as possible to get us out of Hot Water and give the new manager a fighting chance. Whilst its not a case of It’s Over if we lose today, it’s the league leaders next week and I cannot see a footballing style Coup D’Etat versus Arsenal.

C’mon me babbies, on Bonfire Night, give a few fireworks, show us your True Colours!

Have I dropped enough hints of who I’m seeing later? Irrespective of that (and apologies for my indulgence) enjoy the match and post your thoughts and comment in the thread below and finally, as always, UTW!

Wonder if the appointment of the new manager will inject a greater sense of commitment from the players. Need three points and Brighton can blow hot and cold so come on lads, let's hold their feet to the fire this afternoon.

Team sheet is out:

Wolves: Sa; Semedo, Collins, Kilman, Bueno; B. Traore, Neves; Guedes, Moutinho, Podence; Hee-Chan

Subs: Sarkic, Ait-Nouri, Mosquera, Jonny, Ronan, A. Traore, Hodge, Fraser, Griffiths

Genuinely surprised to see Guedes get a place in front of Adama who will surely come on at some point. Guedes has to start demonstrating the reasons for his fee. Nunes clearly not fit enough.

Now Albion level through Mitoma who got in with a header behind Semedo after a fine cross by Lallana

Good solid save by Sa from the resultant free kick.

That's it - 2-2 at half time, entertaining where we showed a lot of spirit but defensive errors have and will likely cost us badly.

A point at this juncture would be a very good result

The old.myth of you get what you pay for in football. I think we would all agree that a defence with Docherty and coady in it is superior to one containing collins and semedo..then compare the relative transfer fees.

Neves, tis time, who gives the ball away cheaply in a dangerous positon ends in a Brighton free kick, 25 yards, just left of central.

MacAllister can hit these.

But curls it over - good news.

So far we've done okay with 10 men. 77 gone

Ait-Nouri gives away a careless free kick which is in a very dangerous area for MacAllister to take. Missed it due to buffering. Adama tees up Jonnybwho puts a great ball in but no-one in the box. A good second half by Wolves so far. It looked like Mosquera was going to come on but he sat back down. Wolves get a free kick 5 yds outside their area

Wolves resistance is broken by Pascal Gross who converts from inside the six yard box after good play by the Jap

Have to say a very good finish by Gross but is was keystone cops defending, every Wolves player running around the ball and the Brighton players

Reckless play by Jonny nearly costs us again. Albion look dangerous every time they attack us

Free kick on right side after a foul on Jonny. Neves to put it in, but first Connor Roman comes on for BT. Five added minutes to play.

Good break by RAN he hits it straight at Sanchez rather than pass. Albion running the clock down now.

That's it.

Final score Wolves 2 - 3 Brighton

Some spirit shown in this match in fits and starts, particularly coming from 1-0 down, and then when 10v11 in the second half but a mixture of inventive Brighton forward play and pretty poor defending cost us again.

Semedo has definitely cost us here today. Dreadful effort at a tackle.

I'm off to my gig. that'll cheer me up

We're going down faster than Neil Parish's boxers when tractor weekly hits the shelves at local newsagents near westminster I'm afraid.

Much of the blame lies with our previous manager, but lazy recruitment from Fosun and now the late panic when they look at the league table is the main reason. It was only early defeats this season that forced a panic buy of players late in the transfer window with no discernible strategy evident going into the new campaign. Anyone semi sane could see how shallow the depth of the squad was in all areas but particularly upfront and now we are seeing the results of that "winging it approach"

All over and a disappointing but perhaps not surprising result after a good attempt by Wolves to match Albion with only ten men. A daft decision by Semedo to pull his player down cost us against a team who are full of confidence and playing well. Jonny still worries me at the back and he is the natural replacement for Semedo!
Wolves 2 Albion 3

Hugo Bueno has really shown both Semedo and Jonny how to defend effectively the two senior players cost us the match. Brighton played well and we really need to emulate their ability to retain possession if we are to have any ambitions of climbing up the table. Plenty of effort put in by the players but the lack of a coherent system was obvious to see and in stark contrast to Brighton who maintained a good shape throughout. Julen can't arrive soon enough for me in order to try and get a tune out of this squad, if he doesn't we're on the highway to hell.

What a let down after coming from behind to lead 2-1.
Semedo was shocking today and cost us any chance of winning this game.
The defence is a shambles, only the kid bueno gets any credit for me.
We battled well second half but it's all huff and puff and little quality.
The new man julen has his work cut out keeping us up.
Hate to say it but how we miss coady and saiss at the back.
Well done bruno and Shi together you have destroyed this team.
Let's hope we get some new manager bounce after christmas if not we are doomed.

Has anyone heard how long the new manager contract is?

No, the lack of communication from the club on many issues needs improving. Perhaps Ivy knows when he returns from his gig , the steps reunion has attracted quite a few fans apparently so hopefully he enjoyed it (Sm126)

Just a bit concerned that if he fails to keep us up he has an agreement to walk because I can't imagine that he would welcome managing in the chump.

Indeed, it's a valid concern

Steps!!! The thought and suggestion, I’m fuming ……. Wait whilst I get my composure back ……

5,6,7,8 …… that’s better.

To answer the question, I have no idea and have reread a couple of articles on the appointment which say nothing on the subject. That is in itself both odd and unusual. It could be a 3.5 year contract or a Moxey ‘best in the business’ style 1 year rolling deal. Or it just could be a ‘sorry Jeff if they look remotely like their going down I’m off’ short term agreement.

Why don’t we know? Perhaps it’ll be revealed soon or it’s absolutely nothing to worry about but my current negative thoughts about Chairman Shi’s communication style to us local fans hasn’t been improved by the lack of clarity.

Great gig by the way, completely took my mind all things Wolves for a couple of hours, took me back to the period 83-88. Good work Lupy, feet to the fire, highway to hell ……. Alas Mike Lindupp and Mark King did not play them!
