Match Thread: Wolves vs Leeds United - Carabao Cup 3rd Round
The Cup
By Wolves November 9 2022
Wolves welcome Leeds United to Molineux for the first time this season, for the third round of the first of the football year's Cup competitions. This will be the penultimate game to be managed by the tempoarary management team of Steve Davis and James Collins prior to the imminent arrival on Monday of new boss Julen Lopetegui
Tonight's game will be an interesting challenge for the management team, in so far as many managers see it as an opportunity to give squad members a chance to start a senior game, but considering Wolves' current PL standing and the desperate need for goals and a win, it may be considered best to field the strongest team and seek a way into the next round of the Cup. It can perhaps reasonably be presumed that the latter option is what the fans will be hoping for, but awareness will also be present to the fact that League leaders Arsenal are coming to call on Saturday for the final game before the World Cup interupts our season.
Leeds will certainly be buoyed by their most recent two results, winning after falling behind at Liverpool and at home to Bournemouth, this after the future of their Manager Jesse Marsch being condsidered to be at risk after a pooor run of results.
Some doubt persists as to whether Matheus Nunes will be fit to play this evening following his shoulder injury, and Toti Gomes is still recovering from an adductor issue so is unlikely to feature, as are the remaining long term injured players. Nelson Semedo and Diego Costa are both suspended following their ridiculous red cards. We may see Connor Ronan get a start tonight after making his debut as a substitute on Saturday, and Joe Hodge may make an apearance too.
The match is due to kick off at 7:45pm and our referee will be the hugely experienced Andre Marriner. Of course it will not be screened on any of the major TV channels as Man City are playing.
Subject to the availability of a satisfactory stream this site will hope to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, whilst board members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

As predicted some of the youngsters get a chance tonight. Sarkic in goal, Ronan and Hodge alongside Neves in midfield with our usual defence. Line -up:
Great save by Sarkic after a period of being under the cosh with 4 Utd corners. Wolves break & Guedes gets a free kick 5 yds outside the Utd area for Neves to take, which is just wide of the right hand post
Another free kick to Wolves after Adama is upended but comes to nothing. Referee turns down an appeal for a pen when Perkins goes down challenged by Neves. Another Utd corner off RAN leads to a good break by Ronan
Robles had to come out of his goal very swiftly to get to a pass from Hodge before Adama. At the other end Perkins gets a shot away easily collected by Sarkic.

Half time whistle sounds after two added minutes. Wolves had to survive an intense period soon after kick off, but after that it has been pretty even. Wolves as always have had some good approach play but rarely threatened the goal. RAN has had a good half down the left wing.
Wolves 0 Utd 0
I’ve had a lot of interruptions though the impression I get (now listening to Mikey Burrows, Thommo and Naylor) was that there wor much to shout about that half.
Lupy Saw the last 10 minutes and we seemed quite comfortable.
How are the youngsters doing?
They’ve all done well Lupy. Sarkic had his work cut out in goal early doors, but then has been solid in goal. Hodge & Ronan have done well in midfield with Neves and some nice confident touches from both of them.
Here we go again.
Harrison’s shot is wide - Gelhardt jumps over it & would probably have been offside in the event. He hurt himself in the process & is replaced by Greenwood
Adama gets to the byline for 2nd time but his cross is easily collected. Great play by Guedes & RAN to cross, Ronan almost success in flicking it in. Utd break and it takes a great interception by Max to deny Joseph
3 added minutes as Heang goes down fouled near the corner flag. Foul by Joao 5 yds outside our area. Lembiksa looks useful! Molineux in good voice as the final whistle goes and we get a win at last over a decent team. It needed a special goal and that’s what we got from B Traore. Good to see so many youngsters get a game and do well, especially Sarkic and Hodge who played the full game.
Wolves 1 Leeds 0
And something I did not realise, however the 4th round will be played in the week after the World Cup Final, so whoever we get will be Lopetegui’s first match in charge of Wolves
Playing for the new manager?
Good performances all over the pitch and deserved to win. I am more impressed with Boubacar each time I see him and a lovely goal. Need to turn his loan into a purchase ASAP.. Hwang did well as did young Joe. Seemed to play with purpose tonight so all credit to the interim managers. Collins probably had his best match so far although I think Max is a bit off his best.
Well done lads.
