Match Thread: FA Cup 3rd Round: Liverpool vs Wolves

What A Day!!
By Wolves
January 7 2023

Once again Wolves face the challenge of a trip to Anfield to try and get into the next round of this year's FA Cup

But who could forget the match on 28th January 2017 when Paul Lambert's team took the game to Liverpool and came away deserved 2-1 winners after goals from Richard Stearman and Andreas Weimann? For those of us living close enough to Liverpool it made for an uncomfortable 90 minutes sitting in a bar surrounded by Reds fans as we put them to the sword!

So... the big question is: Can we do it again today?? Well, this is the Cup and as we all know anything can happen and often does. Liverpool's form has been unpredictable of late, especially on Monday when they lost comprehensively at Brentford, and also lost their star defender Virgil Van Dyke to injury. They are also struggling with several other missing attacking players due to injury, notably Diaz, Firmino and Diogo Jota. They do however have their new recruit Cody Gakpo who starred for Holland in the World Cup and is expected to appear today.

Wolves will surely be buoyed by their performance in the eventual draw at Villa midweek, and be hoping to build on the progress made since Julen Lopetegui took over, and work towards more wins in the Premiership to guarantee survival - especially as Wolves still have to play their postponed PL game at Anfield at some point. Wolves own new striker Matheus Cunha made his debut during the second half of the Villa game and put in a promising performance, so he will be in the hat for a starting place today, together with Diego Costa and the forgotten man Raul Jimenez. JL will no doubt also be conscious of the fact that Wolves have a trip to Notts Forest to make on Wednesday for the Carabao Cup game so he will need to rotate to some degree. Sadly Boubacar Traore's injury has proved worse than hoped for and he is likely to be out of action for at least a month, so options in midfield are more limited.

Most unusually on a Saturday today's game kicks off at 8pm and it will be refereed by Andy Madley, with everyone's old friend Mike Dean on VAR Duty!! The game can be viewed on ITV4 through Freeview, or on the new platform ITV-X.

This board will once again do it's best to provide regular updates on the progress of the game, and members are encouraged to post their own views and observations, and join in the conversation.

FA cup run and premier league survival for me!!!

Bookies have us as no hopers, fair enough, though i think we have a squeak. Liverpool will desperately want to bounce back after that midweek Brentford defeat and they have the players to do it (whoever is selected), nevertheless our defence has at least looked more organised of late. Can we score? Who will Lopetegui select up front and how will he approach the cup? With respect I hope.

It's pretty revealing how few squad rotations are available to Julen. Says a lot about the wasted opportunities to build strength in depth when things were going ok under his predecessors - including the loaning out or selling of experienced players to indulge Bruno's efforts to be the boss.

It's a cliche, but the the Wolves board failed to fix the roof when the the sun was shining by relying on such a small number of players during the good times with Nuno and Bruno.

Thinking about RAN's performances in the last few games, I'm wondering if he might get a run out in a wide midfield position, with Toti filling his role behind him (that sounds a bit smutty). He does seem happier going forward than defending.

Our team selection with be fascinating - go for broke or do a Mad Mick and throw in the towel in preparation for the Carabao or West Ham match. From my side I can't see Julen resting players and picking a weakened team.

So basically I'm as clueless as ever. Thanks for the preview, and UTW!

So Adama, Raul and Guedes get starts, but no start for Nunes who our opposition seem to want. I have to say Liverpool's starting Xl looks mighty strong!!

No Kilman, Mouthinho or Semedo.
Should be fun; who gives a 5h1t?

Corner to Wolves put in by RAN but overhit. Then Sarkic hits the ball into touch carelessly. Allison has to come out & head the ball to deny Adama

Good spell of play for Wolves started by RAN - Raul couldn’t get a shot away though. Brave clearing header by Collins as Nunez tries an overhead kick. Neves down hurt, & not looking good.

Neves OK thankfully. High pressure from L’pool leads to a corner cleared by Raul who then leads a charge with RAN who is very attack focussed this game. Neves to Adama then a quick ball to Raul but he fluffs his shot. Alison hits the ball straight to Guedes who slots it!!

Followed a great Wolves move, terrific Neves cross field ball to Adama whose cross was great and Raul should have done better.

Half time and it’s all level. Shame that Collins made such a poor pass for L’pool to creat their equaliser as he has defended really well. We have played well and posed a real threat to L’pool especially considering the number of changes to our starting Xl. Hope we can keep it up in the second half.

Creators of our own problems again, just as we were beginning to impose ourselves on the match. Still all to play for. Expect JL to make some changes if only to allow for some players to rest. Young Dexter has had a good first half, hasn't put a foot wrong. Joe Hodge has also put in a shift.

Good half of football.

Gutted with the equaliser, great finish of course but what was Collins thinking with that poor cross pitch thump? And the timing too, couldn’t have been worse when I was convinced we’d go in winning. We looked like we could have got a second.

I was worried in the first 15 but we rode it and our goal, gifted wrapped from Brazil, definitely changed the dynamics and the next 15-20 minutes were ours. Pace and purpose with Adama and RAN causing some big problems for the Liverpool defence. And Neves, a below par start but absolutely wonderful since he went down injured!! Just have to keep hope we can pick it up again in the second half.

I can see a raft of substitutions in the second half, because of fitness and stamina issues.

Generally we gave as good as we got in that half, and both goals came from mistakes. I'm having kittens every time we play tika taka in and around our own penalty area.

We have to start this half with a chins up determination, and believe we can this. Putting Adama into space (not literally) might be the key.

C'mon lads!

All over and we go back to Molineux. An enjoyable and entertaining game with a good standard of okay from both teams. I was impressed by Wolves considering the number of changes JL made to the starting Xl and during the game. Collins had probably his best game in defence. VAR wasn’t able to confirm that Matheus was offside for Toti’s goal so seemingly they went with the onfield decision. Typical!!
Liverpool 2 Wolves 2

With the current level of performance from our team we can again begin to dream. Thanks JL.

Great performance, exceptionally well contested match and I needn’t have worried about the starting line up!

We deserved a draw but two offside decisions have gone against us. Someone needs to sit me down and explain how and why on both. The commentary suggested they didn’t have the cameras to draw the pretty lines for our ‘winner’, if true, that’s a disgrace.

Great effort from the lads however, the first 11 and all of the subs. Collins was great too, all except that one cross field pass.

Well played lads, everyone one of you. Great timing from Julen with the substitutes.

The studio have now explained the offside decisions.

However pathetic, I understand they’ve gone with the on field decision for our winner (ie offside) because the cameras couldn’t capture Nunes receiving the ball straight back from the corner.

As for the decision against Toti, apparently because he made a deliberate effort to play the ball, thus Salah (who was offside) was onside. Toti when making the header was stretched to the max, he knew Salah was behind him, so what should he do? Leave the ball altogether? Of course not. A totally Ridiculous decision, utterly farcical.

Great entertainment. Do not understand that offside, but VAR with no camera? Is this a joke?

Enjoyed watching how we played, stuck in there and deserved the third goal that was disallowed - which I'm still scratching my head about.

Sadly, Raul looks like a spent force and I can't see him fitting in with what the manager is bringing and wants from his players. Cunha, like Guedes, needs to liven up and adapt to the pace of the Prem, being successful is not going to fall into the lap of those boys.

Collins was excellent, it's a pity that one wayward punt led to a goal. Jonny did ok, which was good to see. I also think Hwang is an asset to the team regarding his all-round game and effort. He did a lot of good stuff bolstering up the left side of midfield and defence after he came on.

Robbed of victory simple as that.
Really pleased how be played though.
So there was no var camera angle for wolves third goal, yeah right.
If the cameras don't cover the whole pitch why use var in the first place.
The linesman should of gone to Specsavers. Nunes is clearly onside. So because var didn't have the camera angle they have to go with the on field decision. Something stinks here for sure!
If Liverpool had scored that goal would it of been ruled out? I don't think so.
Oh well we can't change the result now let's get the mol rocking in the replay and get the result we deserved tonight.

Thought we were in for a stuffing when I saw the two line-ups but everyone one of them played well.
Quietly impressed with Lembikisa at right-back and Collins again had a good game. I make that three on the bounce. A shame about that ridiculous ball he played but to his credit, he didn't let it effect him and apart from that he didn't put a foot wrong. Hodge and Ait-Nouri both played well and although Raul looked a little rusty he offered much more than Costa does.
I must admit that I really don't understand the offside rule anymore. It's been made far too complicated for a thicko like me. What I do understand though is that VAR should be binned. Supposedly to clear up contentious decisions they now can't make a decision because they haven't got the correct angle to see it. And after play is held up for two or three minutes they have to go with the linesman's decision in the end so what's the point of it? If a tie is played at a non-premier league ground they don't even use it. I always thought it would be a disaster but it's even worse than I thought it would be.
All that aside, a great performance and unlucky not to win.

There is now some video footage showing that Trent Alexander Arnold is playing Nunes onside. I would attach but don't have the knowhow.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories but there is also footage of the linesman going back to the half-way line with his flag down and the referee signalling him to put it up.
